Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can turn an older Google Pixel into a capable retro gaming handheld with three pieces: a controller that physically fits the phone, Android emulators installed from a trusted source, and a launcher or frontend that keeps your library usable from a gamepad. The exact Pixel model matters. A Pixel 7 Pro running several emulators is a useful real-world example, but it is not a universal performance guarantee for every Pixel, game or emulator.
Start by identifying exactly which Pixel you have
Before buying accessories or installing software, open Settings and record the phone model, Android version and security-patch level. These details determine controller clearance, 64-bit app behavior, available updates and how realistic your emulation targets are.

Check the phone’s remaining software support
Google’s support window is tied to the model and, for newer devices, the date it first became available in the US Google Store. Google currently lists these broad categories:
| Pixel family | Google’s stated update window | What it means for a handheld project |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of operating-system and security updates | More time to receive Android fixes and keep installing current apps |
| Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families, plus Pixel Fold | Five years | Still useful for emulation, but check the individual phone’s patch status |
| Pixel 5a and earlier | No longer receive Android-version or security updates | Can still run compatible software, but the abandoned security baseline is a serious trade-off |
The durations and rollout dates can vary by device and carrier. Confirm your particular handset in Google’s current support information and in Settings rather than assuming every phone in a family has the same remaining coverage. See Google’s Pixel software-update schedule.

Update status is separate from gaming performance. A phone may run an emulator well while no longer receiving security fixes; conversely, a fully supported phone may be too slow for a demanding console.
Android version and architecture checks
Look at Settings > About phone > Android version (the exact menu wording can vary by release). The Android 17 availability guide published June 16, 2026, listed Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, the Pixel 7 family, Pixel 8 family, Pixel 9 family, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet as supported devices at the time. That list is a snapshot, not a promise that every older Pixel will receive every later release; consult the Android 17 device guide for the current status.
Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were the first Android phones launched with support for only 64-bit apps. Their Android 13 system images nevertheless included 32-bit system libraries for compatibility edge cases. This matters when an old emulator or utility expects 32-bit components; it is an app-compatibility detail, not a reason to install an alternate system image. Android documents the background in its 64-bit architecture guide.
Choose how the phone will be controlled
The controller is the part that makes a spare phone feel like a handheld instead of a small tablet. Decide whether you want an integrated telescopic controller or a separate Bluetooth pad before configuring emulators.

| Connection style | Advantages | Checks and compromises |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C telescopic controller | Phone and controls form one portable unit; no separate battery or wireless pairing step for the gamepad | Verify the exact Pixel dimensions, USB-C position, case clearance and whether the controller blocks the port or buttons |
| Bluetooth controller | Works with a wider range of phone shapes and can be used when the phone is propped up | Requires pairing and charging; the phone and controller remain separate, so the setup is less pocketable |
A published Pixel 7 Pro setup used an ASUS ROG Tessen USB-C controller. In that account, the controller was detected and configured by RetroArch. Treat that as one demonstrated pairing, not certification that the accessory fits every Pixel or maps correctly in every emulator. Before ordering any telescopic model, compare its supported handset dimensions with your phone, remove a thick case if necessary, and confirm that the USB-C plug reaches the socket without forcing it.
Android’s compatibility requirements describe platform-level controller behavior, but they do not certify a named aftermarket accessory or guarantee an emulator’s button mapping. The standards document is available at the Android 15 Compatibility Definition.
Install emulators from a trusted source
Google Play is the straightforward installation route described in Pixel Help. Play Protect checks apps for potentially harmful behavior, although no automated check replaces careful selection of a reputable emulator and sensible permissions. Follow Google’s Pixel app-download instructions to install and update apps.

Use a frontend for a console-like library
A frontend provides one controller-friendly place to browse games and launch the appropriate emulator. In the Pixel 7 Pro example, RetroArch acted as the main interface while NetherSX2, DuckStation and Dolphin handled other systems. A frontend does not make those emulators identical: each can expose different graphics options, save-state behavior and input menus.

- Install the frontend you intend to use from a source you trust.
- Open it once, grant only the storage permissions it actually requests, and note where it expects game files and save data.
- Install separate emulator apps for systems the frontend will not handle itself.
- Launch every emulator directly at least once so it can create its folders and configuration files.
- Return to the frontend, add the folders containing your legally obtained game files, and scan for titles.
- Test one title per system before importing a large library; this isolates an emulator or file-format problem from a frontend problem.
App names, Android requirements and store availability can change. If an app is unavailable for your Android version, do not assume that installing an unverified package will solve the problem; first check the developer’s current compatibility information.
Connect and map the controller
USB-C controller procedure
- Remove the phone case if its edge prevents the controller’s USB-C plug from seating fully.
- With the phone unlocked, slide it into the controller and align the connector without twisting it.
- Wait for Android’s connection notification, then open the emulator or frontend.
- Open the input or controller settings and press each face button, shoulder button, stick and directional control once.
- Save the profile with a model-specific name, such as
Pixel-7-Pro-USB-C, so you can restore it after an app update.
The cited Pixel 7 Pro account reports automatic detection in RetroArch. Your phone may require manual mapping, and one emulator’s profile may not transfer to another.
Bluetooth procedure
- Put the controller into pairing mode according to its own instructions.
- On the Pixel, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the controller.
- Launch an emulator and confirm that button presses arrive without repeated inputs or unexpected analog drift.
- Map controls inside that emulator and save the profile.
Keep the phone and controller charged before a long session. Wireless latency and sleep behavior can vary by controller and Android release, so test the games you actually plan to play rather than relying on a menu response alone.

Set realistic emulation targets
Emulation performance depends on the Pixel model, the individual game, the emulator and the selected graphics backend. A game that runs smoothly on one handset can stutter on another, and changing a renderer can alter the result. The published Pixel 7 Pro hands-on account describes selected GameCube and Wii games running well in Dolphin, while also noting variation between emulators and rendering backends. It characterizes that phone as unsuitable for cutting-edge emulation. Those are qualitative observations from one setup, not a benchmark or a promise of a particular frame rate or resolution.

| Goal | Practical approach | Expectation to set |
|---|---|---|
| Older, less demanding systems | Begin with the emulator’s default renderer and verify controls, audio and save states | Often the easiest place to establish that the phone, controller and files are configured correctly |
| PlayStation 2-era software | Test titles individually in NetherSX2 or the compatible emulator you installed | Do not infer performance from the console name; game complexity and settings matter |
| PlayStation software | Test each title in DuckStation with the controller profile saved for that app | Different renderers and enhancements can change stability |
| GameCube and Wii | Use Dolphin and compare a small number of games before adding enhancements | The Pixel 7 Pro report is encouraging for its selected games, but it is not a universal Pixel result |
| Newer or unusually demanding systems | Lower ambition first; avoid assuming that a newer Android version equals more graphics power | The cited account explicitly does not treat the Pixel 7 Pro as suitable for cutting-edge emulation |
A one-system-at-a-time test routine
- Choose one game whose files you are entitled to use.
- Run it at the emulator’s default resolution and renderer for several minutes.
- Check sustained play, not just the title screen: watch for audio crackle, input drops, overheating, crashes and rapidly falling battery level.
- Change one graphics setting at a time, then repeat the same section of the game.
- Keep the configuration that is stable rather than the one with the highest theoretical enhancement.
Save states are convenient, but also make regular in-game saves. If an emulator update or a corrupted profile affects a save state, an ordinary game save gives you another recovery path.
Build a dedicated handheld interface
The goal of a repurposed phone is to remove ordinary-phone friction. Put the frontend on the first home-screen position, hide unrelated notifications during play and make the display wake reliably when the controller is attached. Keep only the emulator and utility shortcuts you need in the gaming profile.
- Use a large, readable library view that can be navigated entirely with the controller.
- Group games by system or platform so the correct emulator is obvious.
- Keep each emulator’s input profile and save-data location documented in a note or password manager.
- Disable battery-saver restrictions for the frontend and emulators only if those restrictions interrupt active play; do not disable security features indiscriminately.
- Set a screen timeout long enough for menus, while remembering that a bright display and high refresh rate consume more battery.
- Leave enough free storage for save data, updates and shader or cache files.
A frontend can launch multiple emulator applications, but it cannot eliminate per-app configuration. If a game opens with the wrong controls, fix the mapping in that emulator rather than repeatedly changing the global frontend profile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOrganize game files and storage safely
Create a simple folder structure before scanning a large collection, for example one top-level folder per system and a separate folder for saves. Use descriptive filenames so the frontend can identify games correctly. Keep a backup of saves before moving folders or changing emulator versions.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The controller is not detected
- Remove the case and reseat the USB-C connector.
- Check whether Android shows a connection notification.
- Try the controller in the frontend and in the emulator’s own input screen; this tells you whether the problem is system-wide or app-specific.
- For Bluetooth, forget the device, restart pairing and confirm that another controller is not already connected.
- Map buttons manually and save an emulator-specific profile.
The phone fits poorly or the connector feels strained
Stop using the accessory rather than bending the USB-C plug. Recheck the controller’s published dimension range, the Pixel’s case thickness and the location of the phone’s port. A Bluetooth pad is safer than forcing an incompatible telescopic accessory.
A game runs slowly or audio crackles
- Return to the default graphics backend and resolution.
- Close background apps and let the phone cool before retesting.
- Test another game in the same emulator to determine whether the issue is title-specific.
- Change one enhancement at a time and keep notes of the stable setting.
- Do not treat a positive result on a Pixel 7 Pro as evidence that the same title will run on a Pixel 5a, Pixel 6a or another model.
The emulator crashes or refuses to install
Check the Pixel’s Android version, available storage and the app’s current requirements. Pixel 7-series 64-bit behavior can expose compatibility problems in older software. Prefer a maintained build from a trusted source, and avoid random packages offered as a workaround for an unsupported Android version.
The frontend sees a game but launches the wrong app
Open the frontend’s system-association settings and confirm the emulator assigned to that platform. Launch the emulator directly once, verify its game-directory permission, then rescan the library. Keep separate folders when two emulators support similar file types.
Protect the phone while it becomes a games machine
Install pending Android and emulator updates before loading the library, especially if the Pixel is still within Google’s security-support period. For a Pixel 5a or earlier, understand that no new Android-version or security updates are arriving; using it as an offline device reduces exposure but does not restore support.
Keep the phone ventilated during long sessions, avoid charging it under bedding and inspect the USB-C port for lint before repeatedly inserting a controller. If the battery is swollen, unusually hot or rapidly losing capacity, retire the device rather than treating it as a harmless gaming accessory.
When this project is worth doing
| Your situation | Best decision |
|---|---|
| You already own a supported Pixel and want a compact device for older games | Reuse it, beginning with a correctly fitting controller and a small test library |
| You own a Pixel 7 Pro and want GameCube or Wii experiments | Use Dolphin as a starting point; the published hands-on account reports good results for selected games, with no guarantee beyond that setup |
| You have a Pixel 5a or earlier that no longer receives updates | It may work offline, but weigh the security and app-compatibility limitations before making it a daily-connected device |
| You need current, demanding-console emulation | Do not choose an older Pixel on the assumption that Android version alone determines performance; the cited example is explicitly not a cutting-edge-emulation solution |
| Your phone does not fit any telescopic controller | Use a Bluetooth controller and a stand, or choose a different handset rather than forcing the USB-C connection |
A practical final checklist
- Model, Android version and security patch recorded.
- Google’s current support status checked for the individual Pixel.
- Controller dimensions, case clearance and USB-C alignment verified.
- Frontend and emulator apps installed from a trusted source.
- Controller tested and mapped separately in each emulator.
- One legally obtained game tested per system before importing more.
- Default graphics settings tested before enhancements.
- Save folders backed up.
- Battery temperature, charging behavior and storage space checked.
- Expectations limited to the games the actual phone runs reliably.
What the Pixel 7 Pro example really proves
The strongest evidence for this project is practical rather than a laboratory benchmark: one author turned a Pixel 7 Pro into a portable setup with a USB-C controller, RetroArch, NetherSX2, DuckStation and Dolphin, and reported that selected GameCube and Wii games worked well. That demonstrates feasibility. It does not establish universal controller compatibility, identical results on every Pixel, a fixed frame rate, or suitability for newer console generations. Treat the example as a configuration to try, then let your own phone-and-game tests determine the final library.
