It is not identical to ChromeOS on a Chromebook: some Chromebook hardware and features, including managed Google Play apps, are unavailable. Check your exact PC model and back up your files before you begin.
What you get—and what you don’t
ChromeOS Flex is the practical free route for replacing Windows with a ChromeOS-style experience on a compatible computer. Google provides it free of charge and directs users to create a USB installer with Chromebook Recovery Utility, boot the target PC from that drive, and follow the setup prompts. See Google’s ChromeOS Flex page.

The result is a PC running ChromeOS Flex, not a Chromebook. Google says ChromeOS devices have Google-designed security chips and firmware integrations that Flex lacks; managed Google Play apps are available only on ChromeOS devices. Hardware features such as Bluetooth, touchscreens, SD card readers, and brightness or volume keys may also be unsupported on a particular PC.
Check whether your PC is a good candidate
Look up the exact model
Search Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified-model list using the computer’s manufacturer and exact model number. Similar model variants can behave differently, so do not rely on a listing for a nearby model. Check the model notes and certification end date as well.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Google tests individual models and guarantees a core set of functions on certified ones, including installation, keyboard, USB, system graphics, network where present, and audio input and output. Certification does not guarantee every component or feature: Bluetooth, touchscreens, screen rotation, SD slots, and special function keys are not assured on all models. Even certified computers can have unsupported or untested features.
Confirm the minimum requirements
Google’s minimum requirements call for:
- An Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible device.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage.
- The ability to boot from USB.
- Full administrator access to the computer’s BIOS.
Google does not recommend or support Intel or AMD processors from 2012 or earlier, or Nvidia graphics from 2014 or earlier; these are unlikely to work. Meeting the minimum specifications alone does not guarantee that an uncertified PC will run reliably.

What you need to make the installer
- A separate ChromeOS, Windows, or Mac computer with the current Chrome browser to run Chromebook Recovery Utility. It does not have to be the PC you plan to convert.
- A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the installer erases everything on that drive, so copy off any files you want to keep. Some USB drives may not work.
Google also documents other ways to create ChromeOS Flex installation media that do not require Chrome. Check Google’s current instructions before choosing a method.
Install ChromeOS Flex
- Back up the Windows PC and USB drive. Save important files somewhere other than the target computer and installer drive. Making the installer erases the USB drive. Keep the PC backup until you have reviewed the installation prompts and confirmed your files are safe; do not assume installing will preserve the internal drive.
- Verify compatibility. Check the exact PC model, notes, and certification end date in Google’s certified-model list, then confirm the hardware meets the minimum requirements.
- Create the USB installer. On the separate computer, use Chrome and Chromebook Recovery Utility to create ChromeOS Flex installation media on the 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Follow Google’s installation guide.
- Boot the Windows PC from USB. Insert the installer, restart the PC, and open its boot menu or BIOS/UEFI settings to select the USB drive. The exact key and menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Try it or install it. Google’s process lets you run ChromeOS Flex temporarily from the USB installer or install it on the computer. If you choose installation, read each on-screen prompt carefully and proceed only after understanding what it will do to the PC.
- Complete setup. If installation succeeds, follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up the device.
USB boot and startup problems
The PC does not boot from the installer
Google recommends trying another USB port—including USB 2, USB 3, or USB-C where available—and, if necessary, another installer drive. In BIOS/UEFI, make sure USB boot is enabled and move the USB device to the top of the boot order. See Google’s ChromeOS Flex troubleshooting guidance.

- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
Installation appears successful, but startup fails
If the PC starts to a black screen or says there is no operating system, Google suggests resetting BIOS/UEFI settings to their defaults, then trying UEFI boot—or Legacy mode if UEFI fails. Check whether an EFI boot file is present, and update the BIOS from the computer manufacturer if an update is available.
Understand support and update limits
An uncertified model may work, but Google does not guarantee its stability, functionality, or performance across regular ChromeOS Flex updates. Google says uncertified devices are not eligible for Chrome Education or Chrome Enterprise support. On certified models, the end date matters: after it, the device leaves the list and ongoing testing and Google support cease; fixes and future updates are not guaranteed. Check the live model list before relying on the PC for essential work.

Should you install it?
- Try ChromeOS Flex from USB first if you want to check whether the PC boots and its essential hardware works before committing to installation.
- Consider installing it if your exact model is certified, it meets the requirements, and you have a complete backup and no need for Windows-only software or Chromebook-only capabilities.
- Choose another option if you depend on managed Google Play apps, Chromebook security hardware, or a PC feature Google does not guarantee for your model.
Google announced an optional ChromeOS Flex USB Kit with Back Market on April 2, 2026, while stating that the free download remains available directly from Google. The kit is a convenience, not a requirement; check Google’s announcement for current details.
