How to Turn an Old Tablet Into a Dedicated Smart Home Control Panel

Yes—an old tablet can become a useful smart-home wall panel if it can still run a supported Home Assistant app or browser, connect dependably to your home network, and remain usable where you install it. The practical setup is different on each platform: Android can make the Home Assistant Companion app the device’s launcher, while iPad kiosk mode runs inside the app and needs Apple Guided Access when you want to stop people leaving it.

Start by checking the tablet’s operating-system version, charging connector, Wi-Fi reliability and app-store access. Then create a dashboard designed for quick taps, sign in with a panel-specific account, configure the appropriate kiosk behavior, and only afterward choose a mount and permanent power arrangement.

What an old tablet needs to do the job

A dedicated control panel does not need to be a powerful tablet, but it must meet a few practical requirements. There is no universal minimum specification for every older Android model, so judge the actual device rather than relying on its age alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Supported software: it must be able to install and run the Home Assistant Companion app or a suitable browser. App availability and compatibility depend on the model and operating-system version.
  • Reliable network access: the tablet must reach the Home Assistant server over the home network from its intended location. A panel that frequently loses Wi-Fi is frustrating regardless of its screen quality.
  • Usable display and touch input: controls should be legible at the mounting distance, and the digitizer should register taps accurately.
  • Safe, accessible power: identify the connector and confirm that a cable can remain plugged in without blocking the case, mount or buttons. The documentation does not establish a universal charging limit or guarantee a particular continuous-power arrangement.
  • A location that suits the hardware: check viewing angle, glare, heat, cable routing and whether someone can reach the power connector for maintenance.

Before buying accessories, record the tablet model, screen size, operating-system version, connector type and the version of Home Assistant Companion or browser it can install. The documented iPad kiosk route has a specific software requirement; older Android devices do not have one universal compatibility floor in the official guidance.

Don't forget to use the Allen wrench to adjust your favorite stance.

Plan the panel before installing anything

Choose the job for this screen

A panel works best when it has a narrow purpose: lights and climate in one room, an entryway scene and door status, or a family dashboard for the most-used devices. Put the actions people need several times a day on the first view. Keep administration, rarely used integrations and diagnostic controls on a separate view or out of the panel account’s normal path.

Create a dedicated Home Assistant account

Sign in with an account intended for the panel rather than leaving a personal account on a shared wall device. The Android launcher guidance recommends a dedicated user for each kiosk device so every panel can have its own dashboard. Apply the same principle to an iPad: a panel-specific account limits exposure if visitors or children can reach the screen and makes it easier to change one panel without disturbing another.

Check the network at the final location

Test the tablet from the wall or stand where it will live, not only beside the router. Confirm that it can open the Home Assistant server, authenticate and load the dashboard after a full restart. If the server is only reachable on a particular network or through a local address, make sure the panel will use that same network consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a dashboard that works at arm’s length

A wall panel is an appliance, not a shrunken desktop. Design for a quick glance and a single deliberate tap.

  • Group controls by room or task instead of by integration.
  • Use large cards and generous spacing so a tap does not trigger a neighboring control.
  • Put the current state next to the action: show whether a light is on, the target temperature, or whether a door is open.
  • Keep the first screen short enough to scan without hunting through dense menus.
  • Separate destructive or security-sensitive actions from routine controls, and require an intentional extra step where appropriate.
  • Test in both portrait and landscape if the tablet may rotate. Lock the orientation only after confirming that the mount and dashboard layout suit it.

Open the dashboard on the old tablet before mounting it. Slow rendering, clipped cards, tiny labels or a login loop are easier to fix on a table than on a ladder.

Android: make Home Assistant the dedicated launcher

The Home Assistant Companion app can be selected as the Android device’s default home app. With that arrangement, pressing Home returns to Home Assistant and the app opens after the tablet restarts. This is the most direct way to turn an Android tablet into a single-purpose panel without relying on a separate kiosk browser.

Set up the Android panel

  1. Install or update the Home Assistant Companion app on the tablet if the device’s Android version and app store still support it.
  2. Connect to your Home Assistant server and sign in with the account created for this panel. Load the dashboard you intend to expose and verify that controls respond.
  3. Prepare the dashboard for the device’s screen before changing the launcher. Remove crowded or rarely used elements and check that the most important controls are visible without excessive scrolling.
  4. Choose the Companion app as the default home app. Android’s wording differs by manufacturer, but the setting is the default or home application selector. Select Home Assistant when Android asks which app should handle the Home action.
  5. Enable the Companion app’s Keep screen on setting if the panel should remain visible. If you prefer the display to sleep, leave it disabled and use a tap or other normal wake action when needed.
  6. Restart the tablet and test the whole path. Confirm that Home Assistant opens after reboot, Home returns to the dashboard, and the account can still reach the server.

Understand the launcher trade-off

Making Home Assistant the launcher changes normal Android navigation. The usual app drawer is not available from the Home button, because Home now returns to the dashboard. That is desirable for a dedicated panel but inconvenient if you still want to use the tablet as a general-purpose device. Keep a record of the tablet’s normal default-home setting and be prepared to change it in Android’s home-app settings when you need to repurpose the tablet; the exact menu label varies by manufacturer.

When Android launcher mode is enough

Use the built-in launcher route when the panel only needs Home Assistant, you want it to recover to the dashboard after a restart, and you do not need specialized remote controls for brightness, motion or a screensaver. It avoids adding another kiosk product and keeps the configuration close to the Home Assistant app itself.

iPad: use Home Assistant iOS Kiosk mode

The documented Home Assistant iOS Kiosk mode is an in-app feature, not a replacement for the iPad’s system home screen. It requires iOS or iPadOS 2026.7.0 or later and the Home Assistant Companion app with its Kiosk mode Labs feature. If the old iPad cannot meet those requirements, this documented kiosk route is not available on that device.

Configure Kiosk mode in the Companion app

  1. Update iPadOS and the Home Assistant Companion app as far as the tablet supports, then confirm that the device is on iPadOS 2026.7.0 or later.
  2. Open the Companion app’s Labs settings and enable Kiosk mode.
  3. Select the Home Assistant server and dashboard that the panel should display. Use the panel-specific account rather than a personal account.
  4. Configure the display behavior. Kiosk mode can hide Home Assistant controls and the iOS status bar, reload the dashboard on a schedule, and show a screensaver after inactivity. Choose whether the screen should stay on according to the room, viewing needs and power arrangement.
  5. Leave and reopen the app once to verify that the selected dashboard, reload schedule and screensaver behavior are what you expect.

Kiosk mode is not the same as locking the iPad

Home Assistant’s iOS Kiosk mode cannot prevent someone from leaving the app or turning off the device. If the iPad must remain in Home Assistant—for example, in a public area or a child-accessible room—enable Apple Guided Access separately. Guided Access is the system feature that restricts the iPad to the app; Kiosk mode controls how Home Assistant looks and behaves while it is open.

Choose an iOS screensaver mode

The iOS Kiosk screensaver offers clock, dim and blank modes. The documentation describes blank as the most power-efficient option and the best choice for OLED displays. That description is a configuration guideline, not a measured promise of a particular energy saving or protection against battery aging.

Camera-motion wake is available on devices with a front camera. It requires camera access and keeps the camera active while Kiosk mode runs, so enable it only when the convenience is worth that privacy and power trade-off.

Optional Android route: Fully Kiosk Browser

Fully Kiosk Browser is an optional Android approach rather than a requirement for a Home Assistant dashboard. Its Home Assistant integration can expose device status such as battery level and provide controls for the screen, brightness, motion detection and screensaver settings.

Those remote-administration features require Fully Remote Admin, which in turn requires the paid Fully Plus license. The app’s free trial displays a watermark. Treat this route as a choice for households that specifically need those extra device controls; the standard Home Assistant Companion launcher is sufficient for many panels.

When the extra layer is worthwhile

  • You want Home Assistant to report the tablet’s battery level.
  • You need remote screen, brightness, motion-detection or screensaver controls from Home Assistant.
  • You accept the additional licensing and configuration of Fully Remote Admin.

If all you need is a dashboard that opens after reboot, adding a second kiosk layer increases moving parts without solving a problem. Decide first whether the remote controls are genuinely useful at the chosen location.

Mount the tablet without making maintenance impossible

A wall mount is the natural physical accessory for a dedicated panel, but the fit must be checked against the exact tablet. Choose a category of mount designed for the device’s dimensions and verify the following before purchase:

  • Dimensions and retention: the tablet must fit securely without pressing the screen or side buttons.
  • Charging-port clearance: the mount must leave room for the connector and cable. A mount that covers the port turns a working panel into a dismantling job every time it needs power.
  • Viewing angle: check glare from windows and overhead lights at the normal standing position.
  • Cable routing: plan where the cable exits, how it is secured and whether the route creates a snag or trip hazard.
  • Access for updates and recovery: you should be able to remove the tablet, reach its buttons and change the network or account without taking down the entire installation.

The official Home Assistant guidance supports wall-mounted tablets as a use case, but it does not validate a particular mount or continuous-power setup. Do not assume that a generic holder, hidden cable or always-on arrangement is safe for every tablet.

Android and iPad compared

Decision point Android tablet iPad
Primary documented Home Assistant route Home Assistant Companion app selected as the default home app (launcher). Home Assistant Companion app’s iOS Kiosk mode.
Documented software requirement No universal minimum Android version is stated for all older devices; app and device compatibility varies. iOS or iPadOS 2026.7.0 or later, plus the Companion app’s Kiosk mode Labs feature.
What happens when Home is pressed Home returns to Home Assistant; the app can open after a restart. Kiosk mode does not replace the iPad’s system launcher.
Can the normal device interface be hidden? The launcher arrangement changes normal navigation; the usual app drawer is not available from Home. Kiosk mode can hide Home Assistant controls and the iOS status bar, but it does not stop a user leaving the app.
System-level app locking The launcher behavior may be enough for a household panel, depending on who can use the device. Use Apple Guided Access separately when the iPad must be locked to Home Assistant.
Screensaver and reload controls Keep screen on is available in the Companion app; other behavior depends on the device and chosen software. Kiosk mode supports scheduled dashboard reloads and clock, dim or blank screensaver modes.
Motion wake Not established by the documented Companion launcher guidance. Camera-motion wake is available on devices with a front camera, requires camera access and keeps the camera active during Kiosk mode.
Optional remote device controls Fully Kiosk integration can add battery, screen, brightness, motion and screensaver controls; Remote Admin requires the paid Fully Plus license. Those Fully Kiosk controls are an Android option, not the documented iPad route.

Choose the platform that already meets its software requirement and fits the installation better. A newer dashboard feature is not useful if the old tablet cannot install the required app, hold a network connection or accept a safe charging cable.

A complete installation sequence

  1. Inventory the tablet. Write down its model, operating-system version, connector, screen orientation and whether it can install the needed app or browser.
  2. Update only as far as the device safely supports. Confirm that the Home Assistant Companion app is available. On iPad, verify the iPadOS 2026.7.0-or-later requirement for Kiosk mode.
  3. Test the network from the final room. Open Home Assistant, sign in and leave the dashboard running long enough to expose weak Wi-Fi or server reachability.
  4. Create the panel account and dashboard. Give the account only the access it needs, then build large, room-focused controls.
  5. Select the platform path. On Android, configure the Companion app as the default home app. On iPad, enable Kiosk mode in Labs and select the server and dashboard.
  6. Configure visibility and power behavior. Decide whether the screen stays on, sleeps, dims, blanks or wakes on motion. On iPad, add Guided Access if leaving the app must be blocked.
  7. Reboot and recover-test the panel. Make sure it returns to the intended dashboard, reconnects to Home Assistant and remains usable after the display has slept.
  8. Install the mount last. Confirm dimensions, viewing angle, connector clearance and cable routing before fixing anything to the wall.
  9. Document recovery details. Keep the panel account, server address, Wi-Fi details and the steps for disabling kiosk or launcher behavior somewhere accessible to the household administrator.

Keeping the panel reliable

It shows a blank page or cannot connect

  • Confirm that the tablet is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network.
  • Open another page on the same network to distinguish a tablet connection problem from a Home Assistant server problem.
  • Check the server address and account used by the panel.
  • Restart the app and then restart the tablet if the dashboard remains stuck.

The screen keeps sleeping

On Android, check the Companion app’s Keep screen on setting. On iPad, review the Kiosk display and screensaver settings, then confirm that the chosen behavior matches the room. An always-visible display consumes more power than a sleeping or blank display; the available documentation does not quantify the difference for a particular tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The iPad leaves Home Assistant

Kiosk mode alone does not stop this. Enable Guided Access and test the restriction with the actual people who will use the panel. Remember that Guided Access and Kiosk mode solve different problems: one limits app switching, while the other changes the Home Assistant presentation.

The Android tablet no longer behaves like a normal tablet

That is the expected consequence of selecting Home Assistant as the launcher. Change the default home app in Android’s settings when you need the ordinary launcher and app drawer again. The exact setting name depends on the tablet manufacturer.

The dashboard is stale after an update

Reopen the app and check the panel after Home Assistant, the Companion app, the tablet operating system or a dashboard change. Kiosk mode on iPad can reload the dashboard on a schedule, but scheduled reloads are not a substitute for checking compatibility after an operating-system or app update.

The tablet becomes unusually hot or the battery looks damaged

Disconnect a tablet that becomes excessively hot, swells or shows other battery damage, and do not leave it in a wall mount. The supplied documentation does not establish charging limits or battery-life guarantees for any model, so treat power and battery condition as device-specific safety issues rather than assuming that continuous operation is harmless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and access decisions

A wall panel may be visible to guests, children or anyone who enters the room. Avoid leaving a personal Home Assistant account, private camera views or administrative controls on the first screen. Use a dedicated account, show only the entities needed for the panel’s job and require a deliberate action for sensitive controls. If the panel is in a shared area, Guided Access on iPad or the Android launcher arrangement can reduce accidental navigation, but neither should be treated as a complete security boundary by itself.

Which setup should you choose?

Your situation Best starting point Why
Older Android tablet used only for Home Assistant Companion app as the default launcher It returns Home to the dashboard and can open there after reboot.
iPad that meets the iPadOS 2026.7.0-or-later requirement Companion app iOS Kiosk mode It provides dashboard selection, hidden controls, scheduled reloads and screensaver options inside the app.
iPad that must not leave Home Assistant iOS Kiosk mode plus Apple Guided Access Kiosk mode handles presentation; Guided Access supplies the separate app-locking function.
Android panel needing remote brightness, motion or screensaver controls Fully Kiosk Browser with its Home Assistant integration Those controls are available through the integration, but Remote Admin requires the paid Fully Plus license.
Tablet that cannot install the required app or maintain Wi-Fi Do not mount it yet Software compatibility and network reliability are prerequisites; a mount cannot fix either one.

Final checks before calling it finished

  • The dashboard loads from the exact installation location.
  • The panel account exposes only the controls intended for that room.
  • A reboot returns to the correct app and dashboard.
  • The display behavior—always on, sleeping, dim, blank or motion-waking—matches the room.
  • The mount does not cover the charging connector or trap the tablet.
  • You know how to exit launcher, Kiosk mode or Guided Access for maintenance.
  • You have rechecked the panel after major app or operating-system updates.

With those checks complete, an old tablet can become a focused, glanceable Home Assistant control surface without pretending to be a general-purpose tablet. The decisive factors are supported software, dependable network access, a dashboard designed for touch and an installation that leaves power and recovery access practical.
