You cannot turn a phone into a robot by installing an app alone. The current PhoneBot project is a compact humanoid research platform in which an Android phone becomes the robot’s camera, inertial sensor, wireless link and high-level computing unit. You still need a 13-actuator body, a small onboard computer, motor electronics, a battery, a torso mount and the project’s software and design files. The phone app runs perception and locomotion inference, then sends joint-position commands to the body.
What PhoneBot is—and what it is not
PhoneBot is the name of a current open humanoid research platform described by Ruochen Hou, Quanyou Wang, Daniel Koh and Dennis W. Hong in an arXiv preprint submitted October 6, 2026. It reuses a commodity smartphone as the robot’s primary sensing and computing unit. The authors describe the platform as low-cost and open-source, but it is not a finished retail robot or a guaranteed beginner kit.

The project should also be separated from two other uses of the name. One older repository called phonebot describes a small smartphone-controlled wheeled vehicle. OpenBot is a different phone-powered wheeled platform. Their motors, batteries, control boards and instructions do not form the parts list for the 2026 humanoid PhoneBot.

How the phone controls the humanoid
PhoneBot uses a distributed control system. The smartphone performs high-level sensing and inference; a separate small computer and actuator electronics execute the resulting commands. The control path is:
- Phone sensors: The torso-mounted Android phone supplies camera frames, inertial-measurement-unit (IMU) data and wireless connectivity.
- Android application: The app performs perception and locomotion-policy inference. The paper says its TensorFlow Lite actor runs on the phone’s CPU or GPU.
- Wireless command link: The app sends joint-position targets over Wi-Fi using UDP.
- Onboard computer: A small single-board computer receives those targets and forwards them to the actuator bus.
- Actuators: Thirteen networked servos move the legs and torso according to the requested joint positions.
This division is important when planning a build. The phone replaces a dedicated camera, IMU, wireless interface and high-level inference computer, but it does not replace the robot’s power system, servo bus, motor controllers, structural parts or onboard computer.
What the phone does
The phone’s camera supports visual perception and interaction. Its IMU provides body-motion measurements used by the control software. Its wireless radio carries commands to the onboard computer, and its processor or graphics unit runs the TensorFlow Lite policy. The phone is mounted on the torso rather than held remotely, so its sensors move with the robot.

What the phone does not do
The handset does not directly power or drive the 13 joints. It cannot supply the current required by the servos, provide the mechanical load-bearing structure or substitute for the actuator communications hardware. Removing the separate onboard computer would break the documented command path.

Humanoid layout and published specifications
The body has 13 degrees of freedom: six actuated joints in each leg and one torso-yaw joint. Each leg uses hip yaw, hip roll, hip pitch, knee pitch, ankle pitch and ankle roll. The extra torso joint rotates the upper body around the vertical axis.
| Specification | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Actuated joints | 13 | Six per leg plus one torso-yaw joint |
| Actuator model | ROBOTIS DYNAMIXEL XL430-W250-T | The paper names this model for all 13 joints |
| Assembled dimensions | 483 × 183 × 125 mm | Use these paper-reported dimensions when allowing space for the assembled platform |
| Total mass | 1.8 kg | Includes the phone, actuators, structure, electronics and battery |
| Phone validation | Four old or low-cost smartphones | Reported validation count; not a universal compatibility guarantee |
These figures come from the 2026 paper, not an independent measurement or a current product listing. The dimensions and mass describe the authors’ assembled platform; your fabrication tolerances, phone, battery and supporting electronics can change the result.
Parts you need before buying anything
Start with the current humanoid design files and app requirements, not with an arbitrary old handset. The accessible project page exposes the project title and a joint-configuration image caption, but that material alone does not establish a complete, beginner-tested kit. Confirm that the latest files include the mechanical drawings, wiring information, firmware, app distribution method and supported phone requirements.
| Category | Established requirement | What remains to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Android handset with camera, IMU, Wi-Fi and enough CPU/GPU capacity for the app | Supported Android versions, exact models, app availability and battery condition |
| Actuators | 13 DYNAMIXEL XL430-W250-T servos named by the paper | Current price, stock, cables, connectors and regional availability |
| Onboard computer | Small single-board computer that forwards commands to the actuator bus | Exact board model, operating system, firmware and power requirements |
| Structure | Torso, two legs, joints and a phone-mounting structure | CAD files, printed or machined parts, fasteners and tolerances |
| Power and wiring | Battery and electronics are included in the reported assembled mass | Battery specification, regulators, fuse or protection, charging method and cable routing |
| Software | Android app with TensorFlow Lite inference and Wi-Fi/UDP communication | Download location, calibration tools, firmware and setup instructions |
The actuator figure is not a complete project price
The paper reports $23.90 per XL430-W250-T unit. Multiplying that paper-reported figure by 13 gives an actuator subtotal of $310.70. It is not a current store quotation, and it excludes the structure, onboard computer, battery, wiring, phone mount, fabrication, shipping, taxes and replacement parts. Verify live pricing and stock before committing to a build.

Step-by-step build plan
The following sequence follows the documented architecture while leaving room for the project’s own drawings and software instructions. It is a planning checklist, not a claim that the project page supplies a polished, beginner-tested tutorial.
- Confirm the current files and app. Obtain the latest mechanical design files, firmware, Android application and setup notes. Check whether downloads are available and whether the project specifies a minimum Android version or supported devices. Do this before ordering actuators.
- Screen the phone. Choose an Android phone that exposes a working camera and IMU, connects reliably to Wi-Fi and can run the TensorFlow Lite workload. Check for a swollen battery, damaged charging port, overheating or a screen that cannot remain unlocked. The paper’s validation with four old or low-cost phones does not establish support for every handset.
- Acquire the 13 actuators. Count thirteen XL430-W250-T units, then confirm the required cables, bus connectors, mounting hardware and any spare recommended by the project. Do not substitute motors from the older wheeled phonebot design.
- Fabricate or obtain the body. Build the two six-joint legs, torso-yaw assembly and torso phone mount from the project’s current CAD and assembly information. The paper’s overall dimensions are useful for checking scale, but they do not replace joint-specific drawings or tolerances.
- Install the actuators in the stated joint order. Label each servo as hip yaw, hip roll, hip pitch, knee pitch, ankle pitch, ankle roll or torso yaw. Keep the left and right leg labels consistent with the software’s expected joint order. A swapped ID or reversed orientation can produce unsafe movement.
- Add the onboard computer and actuator electronics. Mount the small computer where it can communicate with the servo bus and remain accessible for service. Provide the power conversion and wiring specified by the project. The phone’s USB or battery output is not a substitute for a correctly rated actuator supply.
- Mount the phone securely. Place the handset in the torso mount so the camera has the intended view and the IMU orientation matches the app’s assumptions. Prevent the phone from sliding during a step, and leave access to its power button, charging connector and cooling surfaces.
- Set up the network. Put the phone and onboard computer on the same Wi-Fi network or the network arrangement specified by the software. Confirm that UDP packets reach the computer before enabling the actuators. A connected Wi-Fi icon alone does not prove that the command port or address is correct.
- Install software and configure actuator IDs. Install the Android app through the project’s current distribution method, load the matching onboard firmware and assign the IDs and joint limits required by the design. Record every ID and limit in a service note so a replacement servo can be configured consistently.
- Calibrate without a person in the motion path. Lift the body or place it on a secure stand, set the mechanical zero positions and verify that each joint moves in the expected direction at low speed. Check that the emergency power disconnect is reachable.
- Test in stages. First test one joint, then one leg, then both legs while the body is supported. Only after position commands, IMU readings and communication remain stable should you attempt a standing or walking routine. Stop immediately if a servo chatters, overheats, strikes a hard stop or receives unexpected targets.
Choosing and preparing an old Android phone
The phrase “old smartphone” describes reuse, not a defined specification. The paper says four old or low-cost phones were used for validation, but the available publication text does not name a universal minimum Android version, processor, camera resolution, storage capacity or battery-health threshold.
Evaluate the handset by function:
- Camera access: The app must be able to open the camera continuously at the mode expected by its perception model.
- IMU access: Accelerometer and gyroscope readings must be available and stable enough for the software’s orientation calculations.
- Wireless reliability: Wi-Fi must maintain the low-latency link to the onboard computer without aggressive sleep disconnects.
- Compute headroom: The phone must run the TensorFlow Lite actor on its CPU or GPU without thermal throttling that destabilizes control.
- Power and mounting: A degraded battery can shut down under camera and inference load, while an unsuitable mount can obstruct sensors or alter the phone’s orientation.
Do not infer iPhone support from the general idea of smartphone reuse. The documented design specifies an Android app; confirm any other operating-system support in the project’s own compatibility documentation.

If the phone connects but the robot does not move
- Check that the app’s destination address and UDP port match the onboard computer.
- Confirm that the onboard computer is running the command-forwarding program.
- Verify actuator power separately from phone Wi-Fi; a network connection does not prove that the servo bus is powered.
- Inspect bus termination, cable polarity and servo IDs.
If movement is reversed or unstable
- Stop power and compare every servo’s physical orientation with the project’s joint diagram.
- Check the expected zero position and sign convention for that joint.
- Lower speed and torque limits for bench tests, then restore only values specified by the software.
- Look for an IMU orientation mismatch caused by mounting the phone upside down or at the wrong angle.
If the phone overheats or drops out
- Keep the phone’s cooling surfaces clear and remove unnecessary background applications.
- Test camera and inference runtime while the handset is stationary before putting it on the robot.
- Check Wi-Fi sleep settings and power-saving modes that suspend the app.
- Use a known-good battery or external power arrangement only if it is mechanically safe and approved by the project documentation.
PhoneBot compared with other phone-powered robots
These platforms share the idea of reusing a phone, but they solve different mechanical and control problems.
| Platform | Form and phone role | Source-backed characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Current PhoneBot | 483 mm humanoid; torso-mounted phone supplies sensing, inference, communication and interaction | 13 named actuators, separate onboard computer, reported 1.8 kg assembled mass and bipedal locomotion research |
| OpenBot | Small electric vehicle; Android phone acts as the robot brain | Build-your-own body, Arduino firmware, Android apps, controller, programming playground and driving-policy resources; documentation and the 2021 paper describe a body costing about $50 in their stated context |
| jgrizou/phonebot | Small smartphone-controlled self-driving vehicle | Repository lists geared motors, a dual TB6612FNG motor driver, LiPo charging/boost hardware, a 3.7 V 1 Ah battery, an Espruino MDBT42Q breakout and CAD models |
The roughly $50 figure belongs to OpenBot’s wheeled body and must not be used as the cost of the humanoid PhoneBot. Likewise, the geared motors, dual motor driver and 3.7 V battery listed for the other phonebot repository are not substitutes for PhoneBot’s 13 networked servos and distributed controller.
The useful comparison is not a single ranking. Choose based on the outcome you want: wheeled mobility generally requires less balance control and fewer actuators; PhoneBot targets bipedal locomotion, interaction and telepresence research; the older phonebot prototype is a separate small-vehicle experiment.

Who should build this platform?
PhoneBot suits a maker, student or robotics lab that can fabricate a small humanoid body, configure a servo bus and debug an Android application. It is a poor choice if you want a plug-and-play consumer robot, a complete shopping cart or a guaranteed app for any retired handset.
Before spending money, confirm five things in the current project materials: the complete bill of materials, the mechanical files, the Android app and supported versions, the onboard-computer firmware, and the power and wiring specifications. If any of those are unavailable, treat the platform as an experimental integration project rather than a straightforward conversion.
The practical answer to “How do I turn my old smartphone into a PhoneBot robot?” is therefore: reuse the phone as the sensing and inference module inside a separately built 13-joint humanoid. The handset is the robot’s brain and interface, not the entire robot.
