Jellyfin’s Android app is a player that connects to a server; it does not turn the phone into one. A phone-hosted server would need an unofficial Android/Linux route, and compatibility, storage access, background operation, and transcoding depend on the exact phone and setup.
The practical approach is to check whether your phone and media suit the experiment, confirm a community server method for your Android version, and test playback on your home network before relying on it.

Can an old Samsung Galaxy run a Jellyfin server?
Possibly, through a community or otherwise unofficial server environment. Jellyfin’s official Android app project and download page describe the Android app as a client, while the installation documentation does not provide a standard Android-phone server procedure. That means there is no verified, model-independent recipe to follow for a Galaxy phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore investing time, establish whether a credible server method supports your specific Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, and processor architecture. You also need to verify that it can read your media, continue running when the screen is off, and start again after a reboot. Those Android-specific details are not established by Jellyfin’s general server instructions.

Check whether the phone and media are a good fit
A phone server is most plausible as a small, local library for devices that can play the files directly. Jellyfin clients report capabilities such as supported codecs, resolutions, and bitrate limits; when a file does not fit a client’s capabilities, playback may require server-side transcoding. That conversion can be demanding, and desktop-oriented hardware guidance does not establish a performance threshold for an older Galaxy.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Phone: record the exact Galaxy model, Android version, One UI version, available internal storage, and whether the device remains stable during extended use.
- Media: note the formats, codecs, resolutions, and file sizes you want to play. Matching media to your clients’ capabilities can reduce the need for transcoding.
- Network: assess Wi-Fi coverage where the phone will stay and whether the connection remains stable during playback. Jellyfin’s hardware guidance prefers Ethernet for servers and does not recommend Wi-Fi for server hardware; a phone on Wi-Fi is a compromise to test, not a recommended wired setup.
- Power and uptime: decide whether the phone can remain plugged in and whether the chosen Android environment can keep its server process alive in the background.
Choose where Jellyfin’s media and data will live
Jellyfin reads media from paths that the server process can access. Its storage guidance says a network SMB or NFS share must first be mounted by the host operating system, and the Jellyfin database should remain on local storage rather than on a network storage device. On Android, whether a server environment can see a particular folder, share, or attached drive depends on the device and how that environment is configured.

Do not assume a USB drive or network share will automatically appear inside Termux or another Linux-style environment. If you are considering a USB-C external SSD for more media capacity, check compatibility for your specific phone, port, Android version, power arrangement, and server environment before buying or relying on it.

What setup looks like—and what remains unverified on Android
Once a Jellyfin server is running in a supported environment, the setup wizard guides you through creating libraries, selecting metadata language and region, and configuring networking. Those are server configuration steps, not evidence that the usual server installation works on Android.
The Android-specific installation details are the difficult part: a verified command sequence, Android storage permissions, a dependable background-service arrangement, Samsung battery-management settings, and behavior after reboot have not been established for Galaxy phones generally. Do not copy Linux desktop instructions and assume they will work unchanged. Before adding a large library, verify each of those details for the exact method and phone you plan to use.

Keep initial access on your home network
First test the server from another device on your local network. The setup wizard offers remote-access options, but Jellyfin’s hardware documentation states, “Jellyfin Server is not designed to be exposed directly to the internet.” The wizard recommends disabling automatic port mapping unless it is specifically required, because it relies on UPnP. For any remote-access plan, consult Jellyfin’s current networking documentation and understand the security implications rather than opening access by default.
Test playback before relying on the phone
- Confirm the server stays available: run the chosen setup on the Galaxy and check that it remains reachable with the screen off and after your normal power-saving settings take effect.
- Add a small test library: use media stored at a path the server can actually read. Confirm that library scanning and metadata retrieval work before moving a large collection.
- Play from each intended client: test over the home network with the files you expect to watch. If a client requires transcoding, check whether playback remains smooth; do not infer performance from the phone’s video-decoding hardware alone.
- Test recovery: restart the phone and verify that the server environment starts again and still has access to its media paths.
If the phone cannot keep the server running, cannot access the intended storage, or struggles with the playback your clients need, it may still work as a limited experiment—but it is not a dependable always-on server for that use. A dedicated server is the more maintainable route when you need reliable unattended operation, flexible storage access, or transcoding capacity. Jellyfin’s general hardware guidance recommends Ethernet; any comparison of cost, power use, or performance should be based on the particular phone and alternative rather than assumed from the device category.
