How to Turn an Obsidian Vault Into an Offline Virtual Tabletop With Atlas VTT

Atlas VTT turns an Obsidian desktop vault into a local tabletop workspace: import a map through Atlas, align its grid, add tokens, and open a player view. Vault-local maps and scenes can be used offline, but Atlas is not currently a networked multiplayer service with player-operated clients. For remote play, the documented method is to share the player view while the GM moves tokens.

What “offline VTT” means with Atlas

Atlas is an Obsidian community plugin that keeps tabletop material—maps, scenes, tokens, and campaign links—alongside your vault. It is useful for running a local game without setting up a hosted VTT account or server. Its project site describes Atlas as free and open source; the plugin listing’s detailed license section says current releases are AGPL-3.0-only, while releases through 0.1.6 used PolyForm Noncommercial (Obsidian community plugin listing).

Offline use depends on the assets you use. Maps and other files stored in the vault are local; an external image URL must be downloaded when used, and submitting an issue report sends information outside your vault. Keep those distinctions in mind if you are preparing a fully disconnected session (Atlas VTT project documentation).

Check compatibility and install Atlas

Atlas requires Obsidian desktop version 1.8.7 or later on Windows, macOS, or Linux. It does not run in Obsidian’s mobile apps. Community plugin browsing also requires Restricted mode to be off (Atlas VTT documentation).

  3. Search for Atlas VTT, open its listing, and select Install.
  4. After installation, select Enable.

To check for plugin updates later, return to the Community plugins area in Settings.

Open the dashboard and make a campaign collection

Enabling Atlas does not automatically open its interface. Open Obsidian’s command palette and run Atlas VTT: Open dashboard. In Atlas’s Asset Manager, create a collection for the campaign or adventure you are preparing. Collections organize its maps, scenes, encounters, and characters or tokens (Atlas VTT documentation).

Import a map and create your first scene

Start with a map image that you can store locally in the vault. Import it through Atlas rather than copying it directly into the plugin’s folder: manually copied images are not picked up by the Asset Manager (Atlas troubleshooting documentation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the Asset Manager, select the plus button and choose Add Map.
  2. Select the map image to import. Atlas can reduce large images during import, which may help keep a vault manageable.
  3. Create a scene from the imported map.
  4. Let Atlas detect a square or hex grid if possible, or align the grid manually to the map.

Grid alignment is worth checking before play: tokens snap to the scene’s grid, so a misaligned grid makes movement and positioning look wrong even when the map image itself is fine (Atlas VTT documentation).

Add tokens and connect campaign notes

Create or import token images, then place them on the scene. Atlas can optionally connect creatures to Fantasy Statblocks, but that plugin is not required to make a usable scene. You can also add pins that link locations to Obsidian notes or other scenes, making it easier to open room descriptions or move between connected areas during a session (Atlas community plugin listing).

Run the scene and show the player view

Atlas’s scene tools include token movement, fog, drawing, text, measurement, note pins, and dice; it also provides initiative and other table widgets (Atlas community plugin listing). The separate player view can be opened from the scene and moved to another display, so an in-person table can see the map while the GM works in Obsidian. A second screen is optional, not a requirement for building or running a scene.

For a remote group, the documented approach is screen sharing, not independent player control. Atlas’s troubleshooting documentation says: “For now, you share the player view with your players over a stream, for example with the screen share of Discord, and you move the tokens for them.” An optional player-control multiplayer update is described as planned, not as an available capability (Atlas troubleshooting documentation).

Keep the vault intact and troubleshoot common problems

Atlas expects an atlas-vtt folder at the top level of the vault. Its collections are stored in atlas-vtt/collections, and map images in atlas-vtt/assets. Importing through Asset Manager lets Atlas register maps correctly.

  • Moving or renaming files: Atlas follows renames and moves made within the atlas-vtt folder. Do not rename or move the root folder itself; Atlas may create a new, empty one if that root folder changes.
  • A map image is missing: Open the map and use Atlas’s cleanup command to check for missing assets. If the image was copied into the folder by hand, import it again through Asset Manager.
  • A map appears black or performs poorly: Check Obsidian’s hardware-acceleration setting and your graphics drivers. Atlas performance can be affected by graphics acceleration and the system’s graphics support.

These folder and recovery behaviors are covered in Atlas’s troubleshooting documentation (Atlas VTT documentation).
