You can make a short video from an iPhone photo while keeping the source in Photos. For an ordinary still, add it to an iMovie movie project and use the Ken Burns effect for a gentle pan or zoom. For a Live Photo, use Photos’ Save as Video command to make a video copy of the motion captured around the shot. If you want an extra safeguard for an ordinary still, duplicate it in Photos first.
Choose the right method for your photo
| Photo and goal | Use | What the result does |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary still; add gentle cinematic movement | iMovie’s Ken Burns effect | Simulates a camera pan or zoom across the photograph. It does not create new movement within the photographed scene. |
| Live Photo; keep the motion recorded around the shutter moment | Photos > More > Save as Video | Creates a video from the Live Photo’s captured motion. Apple says the Live Photo remains accessible in the Live Photos album. |
| Live Photo; emphasize or repeat its captured movement | Apply Live, Loop, Bounce or Long Exposure in Photos; save as video if you need a video file | Changes playback or appearance using content captured in the Live Photo. |
A Live Photo records what happens just before and after the still image, including audio, so it is the better starting point when you want real captured motion rather than a simulated camera move. Apple’s Live Photo camera guide describes how Live Photos work.

Make a moving clip from an ordinary still in iMovie
1. Protect the source if you want a separate library copy
In Photos, open the image, tap More, then Duplicate. Apple says the duplicate appears next to the original in the library. This is an optional precaution; you can also leave the original in Photos and use the iMovie project as your working edit. See Apple’s instructions for duplicating photos and videos.

- Open iMovie and open an existing movie project or create one.
- Move the playhead to where you want the image to appear.
- Tap Add Media, choose Photos or Albums, select the image, then add it to the project.
If the image is in iCloud Photos and has not downloaded to the iPhone, iMovie may show a Download button. Apple documents this workflow in its iMovie guide to adding video clips and photos.

3. Set the pan or zoom
Select the photo clip in the timeline. iMovie applies the Ken Burns effect to a still by default. Adjust its start and end frames to choose where the move begins and finishes: for example, start with a wider view and end closer to the main subject, or pan gently across a landscape. Preview the clip and keep the framing subtle enough that it does not crop out the subject. Apple’s guide to adjusting zoom effects in iMovie explains how to change the frames or turn the effect off.
The movement is a pan or zoom across the photograph, not newly generated motion in people, objects or the background. If you need the subject itself to move, an ordinary still does not contain that recorded movement.

4. Set the clip length and preview
Newly added photos appear in the iMovie timeline for 3–6 seconds, depending on transitions, according to Apple’s current iMovie guide. Drag the clip’s trim handles to shorten or extend it to fit the beat you have in mind, then preview the project. Treat that initial duration as a starting point, not a required length.

Optionally edit the Live Photo before saving
Before making the video, you can change the key photo, trim the Live Photo’s playback frames, mute its audio, or apply Live, Loop, Bounce or Long Exposure. Then use Save as Video when you want a video file. One specific caution: on iPhone 15 or later, changing the key photo of a Live Photo made with a Portrait effect removes that Portrait effect, according to Apple’s iOS 26 Live Photo editing guide.
Check whether the shot is a Live Photo
Open the image in Photos and check whether it is identified as a Live Photo or appears under the Live Photos media type. If it is an ordinary still, use iMovie for a pan-and-zoom presentation; if it is a Live Photo, Photos can turn its captured motion into a video. Apple notes that Live Photos are unavailable when ProRAW or HEIF Max is enabled in the camera settings; see its Live Photo camera guide.

Keep the source and the video distinct
For an ordinary still, the duplicate is a second library copy, while the iMovie project is where you build the moving presentation. For a Live Photo, Apple says the original remains available in the Live Photos album after you save a video. These documented workflows let you make a short video treatment without treating the source photo as disposable. The sources do not specify a particular export resolution or codec, so check the export options shown on your device if those details matter.
