How to Turn an Internet Radio Stream Into a 24/7 YouTube Video With a Waveform

To broadcast an internet radio station on YouTube with a live waveform, combine the station’s audio with a video visualizer, then send the resulting video feed to YouTube Live through an encoder such as OBS or FFmpeg. Before going live, confirm you have the rights to relay the station and its music, check that your channel can livestream, and plan for the fact that a continuous broadcast may not be saved as one complete replay.

What you need for a radio stream with a waveform

YouTube Live receives a video feed, so radio audio alone is not enough. The basic setup has three parts: the internet radio audio stream, a visual scene that displays a waveform, and an encoder that sends the combined audio and video to YouTube.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Audio input: the station’s stream URL or another supported way to capture its audio.
  • Visual layer: a background image or looping video plus a visualizer that analyzes the same audio you send to YouTube.
  • Encoder: OBS for a graphical desktop workflow, or FFmpeg for a command-line workflow.
  • YouTube Live access: an eligible channel, a stream key, and a reliable internet connection.

A third-party guide published May 29, 2026 describes using an OBS Browser source with a local HTML visualizer. That is an example approach, not an official YouTube recommendation, and it does not establish that a particular visualizer or configuration will work on every system. See RadioTech Studio’s guide.

Check YouTube eligibility and music rights first

Confirm your channel can livestream

YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.

Get permission to relay the station and its music

Having access to an internet radio URL does not establish that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and obtain permission covering the relevant territories and uses before you broadcast.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content that remains in the stream, it may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID; a license by itself does not guarantee the live stream will continue. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Choose OBS or FFmpeg for the broadcast

Option How it works Trade-off
OBS on a computer Build a scene with the radio audio, background and waveform visualizer, then connect OBS to YouTube Live. Graphical controls make the scene easier to inspect, but the computer and desktop session need to remain available. A Browser source loading a local HTML visualizer is one proposed route; compatibility is not established for a particular visualizer.
FFmpeg on a server Use a command-line pipeline to combine the audio stream with a still image or looping video and publish the result to YouTube. A VPS can support unattended operation, but requires command-line configuration and process monitoring. The specific waveform pipeline depends on the tools and filters available; no production-ready waveform command is established here.

Neither route has established comparative uptime, CPU-use or cost figures. Choose based on how you can reliably operate and monitor it rather than assuming one is inherently more reliable. OBS is covered as a YouTube encoder by the OBS Project’s YouTube streaming guide; YouTube also explains how to create a live stream with an encoder.

Set up the waveform and audio feed

OBS: create a scene and connect both sources

  1. Install and open OBS. Create a new scene for the radio broadcast.
  2. Add the visual background. Add an image or looping video as the scene’s base layer.
  3. Add a waveform visualizer. One suggested approach is an OBS Browser source pointed at a local HTML visualizer. Configure it to analyze the radio audio—not a microphone or unrelated desktop sound—so the waveform follows what viewers hear. The exact audio routing depends on the visualizer and your system; compatibility for a particular plugin or page is not established.
  4. Add the radio audio. Configure an input that captures the station’s stream. Confirm that OBS’s audio meter moves when the station is playing, and that the visualizer responds to that same input.
  5. Check the scene before streaming. Verify that the waveform is visible, the audio is audible, and the visualizer is not covering important text or artwork.
  6. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow and configure OBS with the stream key from the intended live stream.

FFmpeg: combine the audio and video sources

The general FFmpeg approach is to read the radio audio, pair it with a still image or looping video, add a waveform-generating video composition or filter, encode the combined feed, and publish it to YouTube. The waveform must analyze the same audio being sent to the output. A VPS is an optional place to run the process unattended, not a YouTube requirement.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

There is no verified, production-ready FFmpeg command for this particular waveform setup here. FFmpeg options and YouTube’s recommended output settings can change, and the correct filter chain depends on your input format and build. Validate the command against your installed FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than copying an unverified bitrate or command as universal.

Configure YouTube’s encoder output

In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and use its encoder setup to obtain the stream key. In OBS or FFmpeg, select YouTube’s recommended delivery protocol—YouTube recommends RTMPS—and configure resolution, frame rate and bitrate for a quality your connection can sustain. Follow the current values and guidance in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions documentation; a bitrate from a third-party tutorial should not be treated as best for every connection.

Treat the stream key as a password. YouTube describes it as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not publish it in a command screenshot, public repository or support post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key. More on stream keys: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Plan for a 24/7 broadcast and its archive

“24/7” describes continuous live output; it does not guarantee one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If replay matters, make a local recording and plan how to divide or publish archive segments. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

For a self-hosted setup, unattended operation also means the computer or server, encoder process, audio input and internet connection must remain available. Arrange a way to detect a stopped process or lost feed and restart it; do not assume that a VPS alone makes a broadcast self-healing.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube will not accept the encoder: Check channel verification and recent live-stream restrictions, then confirm the stream key belongs to the intended live stream and has not been mistyped or replaced.
  • Video appears, but there is no sound: Confirm that the radio input is active in OBS or FFmpeg and that the selected audio source is included in the encoder output. Check the station stream separately to determine whether it is reachable.
  • The waveform is flat or does not move: Make sure the visualizer is analyzing the same audio input that reaches YouTube. A visualizer attached to a microphone or desktop-audio device will not necessarily follow a separately captured radio stream.
  • The stream buffers or drops: Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and reduce output demands if your connection cannot sustain the selected settings. YouTube advises choosing settings reliable for the available connection.
  • The live broadcast is interrupted for copyright: Stop and resolve the rights issue. Confirm that your permission covers the broadcast and territories, and ask the rights holder whether the channel must be allowlisted through Content ID. A license does not prevent interruption if allowlisting is required but absent.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: A continuous stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
  • The broadcast stops while unattended: Check whether the computer or server slept, lost its network connection, or stopped the encoder process. Add process monitoring and a restart procedure appropriate to your setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video live on YouTube. It is designed for prerecorded video, not a live microphone or camera, so it is not a direct replacement for a live internet radio audio feed that must be captured continuously. If your station’s content is available as a recording or playlist that you have the rights to stream, you can upload it, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer can be off.
  • The uploaded video streams as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo also offers daily, weekly, six-month and yearly billing; see current plan details. For Indian creators, UPI is available alongside cards. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
