You can turn an Android phone into a handheld-style system by adding a compatible controller, then choosing whether games run locally on the phone, stream from a cloud service, or stream from a computer or console you own. The most console-like arrangement is a USB-C telescopic controller that holds the phone between two control grips. A Bluetooth gamepad is more flexible about phone placement, but it introduces wireless pairing and another device to carry.
The controller does not make every Android game compatible, and your phone will not run console or PC games locally simply because a controller is attached. Check the phone, controller, game, network and service requirements before buying anything.

Decide what “handheld” means for your setup
There are three different arrangements that are often described as turning a phone into a handheld. They feel similar in your hands but have different requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Local Android play: the game is installed and rendered on the phone. A physical controller works only if that game supports one or provides a compatible control-mapping route.
- Cloud gaming: a service runs the game remotely and sends a video stream to the phone. You need a supported service, a suitable plan where required, a compatible controller and a network that can handle interactive streaming.
- Remote play: a computer or console you own runs the game, while the phone displays and controls the stream. The host device, remote-play app, network and game support all matter.
Choose the controller after deciding which of these uses matters most. A setup that is excellent for installed Android games may still require a subscription for cloud play or a powered-on host PC for remote play.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Choose a controller that fits your phone and games
USB-C telescopic controller
A telescopic controller places the phone between two built-in control sections. It is the closest physical approximation to a dedicated handheld because the screen and controls move as one unit. A USB-C model connects directly to the phone instead of relying on a separate wireless link.
For example, the Backbone One USB-C product page lists Android 10.0 or later and says downloaded games must support controllers. Those are requirements for that product, not a guarantee for every USB-C controller or every Android phone. The phone must also fit the controller’s width and connector position, and a thick case may need to be removed.
The GameSir X2 Pro tutorial describes a direct Type-C connection. It also warns that incompatible power-delivery behavior can prevent a connection. That is why a phone can meet an Android-version requirement yet still fail to work with a particular wired controller.

Bluetooth gamepad
A Bluetooth gamepad leaves the phone independent of the controller. You can place the phone on a stand, connect it to a larger display, or use the same gamepad with more than one device. The trade-off is wireless pairing, a separately charged controller and a less integrated handheld shape.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
There is no universal winner between USB-C and Bluetooth. Check the exact controller’s Android support, the phone’s physical fit, each game’s controller support and whether you value a direct connection or wireless flexibility. A controller advertised as supporting Android still may use a particular input mode or companion app, so read its manual before assuming it will behave like a standard gamepad.
| Consideration | USB-C telescopic controller | Bluetooth gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Direct USB-C plug-in; no wireless pairing | Wireless pairing with the phone |
| Handheld feel | Phone and controls form one unit | Phone is separate unless mounted with an accessory |
| Fit checks | Phone width, USB-C position and case clearance are critical | Phone fit is usually irrelevant, but a stand or mount may be needed |
| Game compatibility | Depends on Android support and whether the game accepts a controller | Depends on Android support, the selected input mode and game support |
| Charging and audio | Check whether the specific model leaves a usable charging or audio path | Phone and controller charge separately; audio normally remains on the phone or headset |
| Best fit | Travel and a compact, one-piece setup | Flexible seating, multiple devices or a phone kept on a stand |
Run this compatibility checklist before buying
Use the following checks with the exact phone, controller and games you intend to use. Product families often contain different editions, so a result for one model should not be generalized to another.
- Android version: confirm the controller’s stated minimum version. The Backbone USB-C page, for example, specifies Android 10.0 or later.
- Connector and device design: verify that the phone’s USB-C port is positioned where the telescopic controller expects it and that the phone’s width is within the controller’s range.
- Case clearance: check the maker’s fit list. Remove the case for testing if the plug cannot seat fully, but do not force the connector against a case edge.
- Game input: look up each game’s controller support. Android navigation working with a gamepad does not prove that an individual game accepts physical controls.
- Connection mode: determine whether the controller uses wired USB-C, Bluetooth, a special mode, or a companion app. Follow the model-specific pairing instructions.
- Power delivery: for a wired controller, confirm that the phone and controller’s USB-C power behavior is compatible. The GameSir X2 Pro documentation identifies power-delivery incompatibility as a possible reason for a failed connection.
- Streaming requirements: for cloud play, check service availability, plan and region. For remote play, confirm that you have the required host PC or console and a suitable network.
- Audio and charging: decide whether you need to charge while playing or use wired headphones. Features differ by controller. Backbone says its listed USB-C model includes a headset jack and supports Bluetooth audio through the connected phone; that does not establish the same features for other models.
Set up a USB-C telescopic controller
These steps describe a typical direct-connect arrangement. Use the controller’s own manual for button combinations, fit limits and any required app.
- Update the phone. Install the latest Android update available for the device, then restart it. Confirm that the version meets the controller’s requirement.
- Prepare the fit. Remove a case or grip if it blocks the USB-C plug or prevents the phone from sitting level. Inspect the phone port for lint or damage; do not insert a connector at an angle.
- Open the controller. Extend the telescopic section only as far as needed. Place the phone so the USB-C port lines up naturally with the controller plug.
- Connect without force. Insert the plug straight into the port, then seat the phone in the controller’s supports. If the plug feels resistant, stop and recheck alignment and case clearance.
- Allow Android to recognize it. Some controllers work immediately as a standard input device; others switch modes or use a companion application. Accept only permissions that the controller’s documentation explains.
- Test with a known controller-compatible game. Check both sticks, the directional pad, triggers, face buttons and menu buttons. A successful Android connection does not prove that every installed game will respond.
- Test charging and audio separately. If the controller has a pass-through charging port or audio jack, connect one accessory at a time and verify that the phone still charges and that sound is routed as expected.
- Secure your normal case only after testing. If the phone works without the case but not with it, the case is a fit limitation rather than a software fault.
Pair a Bluetooth gamepad
- Charge the gamepad and place it in its Android or pairing mode according to its manual.
- On the phone, open Settings and choose Connected devices or the equivalent Bluetooth section. Tap Pair new device and select the controller when it appears.
- Confirm the pairing code if Android displays one. Wait until the controller is shown as connected, not merely remembered.
- Open a game that explicitly supports physical controllers and test every control. If a game expects a different input mode, use the controller’s documented mode switch rather than repeatedly pairing and unpairing it.
- When moving the gamepad to another phone, disconnect it from the first device or use the controller’s documented multi-device procedure. Otherwise Android may reconnect to the previous device.
Bluetooth is useful when the phone must remain in a case or sit on a stand, but wireless flexibility does not remove game-compatibility checks. A paired controller can navigate Android menus while a particular game ignores it.

Make installed Android games respond correctly
Check native controller support first
Look for controller information in the game’s Play Store listing, in its in-game settings and in the developer’s support documentation. Launch the game after connecting the controller, then open its controls menu. A game may support only some actions, use unusual button labels or require you to select a gamepad profile.
If the game shows only touch controls and provides no controller setting, assume that native support is absent until the developer confirms otherwise. Do not buy a controller on the assumption that a familiar mobile game will automatically accept it.
Understand control-mapping limits
Some Android games offer a compatible control-mapping path, but the quality and permissibility of such tools vary. Mapping can introduce on-screen overlays, inconsistent camera control or conflicts with a game’s terms. Treat it as a game-specific workaround, not as proof that the controller is universally compatible. Competitive games may also distinguish touch input from physical input or restrict overlays.

Choose between local, cloud and remote play
| Method | Where the game runs | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Android | On the phone | Android version, storage, a compatible game and controller support | Only games released for Android or otherwise supported by the phone can run locally |
| Cloud gaming | On the service’s remote hardware | Supported service, plan where required, compatible controller and suitable internet access | Availability, catalog, subscription and network conditions vary by service and region |
| Remote play | On your PC or console | Host device, remote-play app, same or suitable network and a game that accepts controller input | The host must be available; the phone is receiving a stream rather than running the game itself |
Use cloud gaming from the phone
Cloud gaming can make a modest Android phone feel like a portable game screen, but the phone is decoding a stream rather than running the game. Start by checking that the service operates in your country, that the desired game is in its current catalog and that your plan includes mobile access. Requirements and catalogs can change, so use the service’s current documentation instead of relying on an old list.
Backbone describes cloud services as a use case for its controller. Its support FAQ says Xbox Cloud Gaming can be used without owning an Xbox console when the user has an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Read the current plan and regional terms at Backbone’s console-requirement FAQ before subscribing; the statement is about that service arrangement, not a universal rule for every cloud platform.
- Install the cloud service’s official Android app or use its supported mobile browser.
- Sign in and verify the account, plan and regional availability.
- Connect the USB-C or Bluetooth controller before launching a game.
- Open the service’s controller test or a controller-supported title. Confirm that the service recognizes the correct input mode.
- Use a stable network location first. If controls feel delayed or the image repeatedly drops quality, move closer to the access point or try a different connection; no universal latency or bandwidth figure is established for all networks.
Stream games from a PC with Steam Link
Remote play is different from cloud gaming: your computer remains the host. Steam’s Android instructions require the phone and host PC to be connected on the same network for the standard Steam Link setup. The host must be on, signed in to Steam and able to run the game.
- Install Steam Link on the Android phone and open it.
- On the host PC, open Steam and leave it running. Make sure the PC and phone are on the same network, following Steam’s Android Steam Link instructions.
- In Steam Link, select the detected computer. If it is not found, confirm both devices’ network connection and that Steam is running on the PC.
- Complete the pairing code shown by Steam Link.
- Connect the controller to the phone and use Steam Link’s controller test before starting the game.
- Launch a game from the Steam Link library. The game must accept the controller layout being sent through the stream.
Remote play quality depends on the host PC, the network path and the game. A phone cannot compensate for a sleeping computer, an unavailable console or a network that cannot sustain interactive streaming.

Keep charging and audio practical
A one-piece controller is convenient until the phone needs power. Before committing to a long session, identify whether the controller has pass-through charging and whether that port is usable while the phone is mounted. A direct USB-C controller may occupy the phone’s only port, so charging behavior is a purchase criterion rather than an afterthought.
Audio is similarly model-specific. The Backbone product page states that its USB-C model has a headset jack and supports Bluetooth audio through the connected phone. Other controllers may omit a headset jack, block the phone’s port or support audio differently. Verify the exact model’s documentation before buying a headset or charging accessory.
For a Bluetooth gamepad, the phone’s own charging and audio ports remain physically accessible, but you must keep the phone and controller charged separately. A stand can improve comfort for cloud or remote play, while a telescopic controller is easier to hold during travel.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The USB-C controller is not detected
- Remove the phone case and reseat the connector straight. A plug that is only partly inserted can look connected while carrying no usable input.
- Confirm that the phone meets the controller’s Android requirement and restart the phone after connecting it.
- Check the controller’s mode or companion app instructions. Some models require a specific startup mode.
- If using a GameSir X2 Pro, review the tutorial’s power-delivery warning. Incompatible USB-C power behavior can prevent a connection even when the connector fits.
- Test the controller with a second known-compatible phone only if you can do so safely. This separates a phone-port problem from a controller problem without assuming that every Android model behaves alike.
Bluetooth pairing fails or keeps switching devices
- Put the gamepad back into its documented pairing mode rather than simply turning it on.
- In Android’s Bluetooth settings, remove an old entry if the controller is repeatedly reconnecting to another device, then pair again.
- Keep the phone nearby during the first pairing and verify that Android reports an active connection.
- Test input in a controller-compatible game. A successful pairing icon alone does not prove that a game will accept the controls.
The game ignores the controller
- Confirm that the game supports physical controllers; Android menu navigation is not evidence of in-game support.
- Look for an in-game control profile or gamepad toggle.
- Check whether the controller is in the mode expected by that title. Do not assume that a wireless XInput mode, a direct USB mode and a mapping mode are interchangeable.
- If the game has no supported path, use touch controls or choose a title with explicit controller support rather than forcing an unreliable overlay.
Cloud or remote play connects but feels unusable
- For cloud gaming, verify the service plan, region and catalog before diagnosing the controller.
- For Steam Link, confirm that the host PC is awake, Steam is running and both devices are on the same network.
- Try a stronger network position and close other high-bandwidth activity. The official setup guidance establishes the host and network requirement but does not promise one latency or bandwidth result for every household.
- Test a local controller-supported Android game. If local input is fine, the remaining issue is likely the streaming service, host or network path.
Backbone-specific remote-play behavior differs
Backbone’s support page documents an Android PS Remote Play limitation for its PlayStation Edition controller. Read the details at Backbone’s game-compatibility support article before assuming that a PlayStation-branded edition behaves like another controller or like another remote-play app. This is a product-edition exception, not a rule for every Android controller.
Know what this setup cannot do
Adding controls does not turn an Android phone into a console emulator for games it cannot legally or technically run. A controller supplies input; it does not provide a console’s operating system, game files, license or processing environment. Console and PC titles therefore require an Android release, a supported cloud service or a remote-play host.
Streaming also does not eliminate requirements. Cloud play depends on the service’s availability and account terms. Remote play depends on access to the host PC or console and its network. In both cases, the game still has to accept the controller input delivered by the app.
