Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo turn an AI-generated PNG or JPG into a vector cut file, trace its pixels into editable paths, clean up the resulting shapes, then export and test the file in your cutting software. Simply changing a file extension to .svg does not create cut paths. Simple, high-contrast artwork usually traces well; photographs, gradients, and painterly textures are often better kept as raster art for Print Then Cut.
Choose between cut paths and Print Then Cut
A raster image stores pixels. A vector file stores paths or shapes that define what a cutter should follow. Cricut treats raster uploads as images whose cut lines must be defined; SVG and DXF uploads contain vector cut paths. See Cricut’s upload instructions.

Choose a vector cut file when you want the machine to cut shapes from material such as vinyl or paper. If the design depends on photographic detail, gradients, or texture, use a raster Print Then Cut workflow when supported: the printer reproduces the image and the cutter follows its outer contour. Cricut notes that patterns, gradients, textures, photographs, and embedded non-vector images can prevent its vector upload workflow from separating individual shapes and colors.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare the AI image for tracing
- Start with the highest-resolution export available. Small or low-resolution images can trace poorly.
- Prefer clean clipart, bold outlines, and simple silhouettes over photographs or softly shaded illustrations.
- Remove an unnecessary background and reduce colors before tracing.
- Decide what the physical result should be: one cut silhouette, separate color layers, or a full-color printed image with an outside cut contour.
Cricut says its Convert to Layers feature works best with simple clipart. Automatic tracing translates visible pixels into shapes; it does not faithfully preserve every detail of complex art.

Trace the image in Inkscape
- Import the raster image. Open Inkscape, import the PNG or JPG, and select it.
- Open the tracing tool. Choose Path > Trace Bitmap. Use the preview to select a trace method suited to the artwork.
- Choose an appropriate trace. Brightness cutoff is a common option for a silhouette; edge detection can trace contours; color quantization can separate color boundaries; and centerline tracing can suit line drawings. Inkscape’s Tracing an Image guide explains these options.
- Apply and verify the trace. Apply the settings, then move the new vector aside. This confirms that paths were created rather than leaving you with only the original bitmap.
- Clean up the paths. Remove specks and unwanted shapes, correct awkward contours, and simplify or close shapes where appropriate. Color scans can produce separate objects for each scan, so inspect the object structure as well as the appearance.
- Check at project size. Zoom in on small gaps and internal cutouts, then view the design at the size you intend to make. Tiny features that look fine on screen may be difficult to cut or weed.
- Export and test. Save as SVG for Cricut Design Space desktop, upload the file, and inspect its preview before cutting.
Inkscape’s guide cautions that a trace will not be a perfect reproduction: “If you expect a 100% faithful representation of your picture, though, only in vector format, you will be disappointed.”
Pick the conversion route that fits the job
| Route | Best suited to | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Inkscape Trace Bitmap | People who want a free editor and control over tracing and path cleanup. | Offers several trace methods and a preview; traced shapes still need inspection and repair. See the Inkscape guide. |
| Adobe Illustrator Image Trace | People already working in Illustrator or seeking its vector-editing tools. | A paid alternative with an Image Trace feature. No comparative performance result is established here. See Adobe’s Image Trace documentation. |
| Cricut Design Space upload cleanup | Users who need a basic silhouette or a full-color Print Then Cut image. | Raster upload tools can define cut lines. Convert to Layers can create color-separated layers, but adding those layers to the canvas is a Cricut Access feature. It offers less path control than a separate vector editor. See Cricut’s upload instructions. |
Plan how multiple colors will be cut
For a multi-color physical design, decide whether the pieces should stack or fit together. Cricut describes stacked layers as a solid base with other layers placed on top, a common approach for iron-on, paper, and vinyl. Sliced layers fit together without overlap and are suggested for projects such as Infusible Ink. The right construction depends on the material and how you will assemble the design; color separation alone does not decide it. See Cricut’s Convert to Layers guidance.

Check SVG compatibility with Cricut Design Space
Cricut’s desktop upload guidance lists SVG and DXF as vector formats and JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF, and HEIC as raster formats. DXF uploads are not supported in Design Space for iOS or Android. Layered vector files appear grouped until ungrouped. Cricut’s listed SVG limit is 5,000 paths; an SVG exceeding it causes an upload error. Check the current upload requirements for the platform you use.

- Gradients, patterns, textures, or photos: These may not become separate vector layers. If preserving their appearance matters more than separate cut shapes, use Print Then Cut where supported.
- Clipping paths: Cricut says clipping paths cannot be contained in SVG/DXF image uploads. Merge or flatten the intended filled result where appropriate before export.
- Text: Convert editable text to outlines or curves so the destination receives shapes rather than font-dependent text.
- Raster content inside the SVG: Cricut says linked images cannot be read, and embedded photographs or other non-vector images interfere with the vector layer workflow. Remove unsupported raster content or use a format and workflow suited to the intended result.
- Too many paths: Simplify the trace and remove speckles or tiny features if the file exceeds Cricut’s path limit.
- Unexpected cut geometry: Inspect the single-color or cut preview and check small details at the intended physical size before cutting.
