You can turn a WordPress site into a Progressive Web App (PWA) without rebuilding it: serve it over HTTPS, add a web app manifest, register a service worker, define a safe cache policy, supply icons, and test installation and offline behavior on each target device. For most site owners, a dedicated WordPress PWA plugin handles the wiring, but you still need to configure and test it because themes, security plugins, CDNs, and personalized pages can change the result.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What a WordPress PWA actually adds
A PWA is still your website, but the browser receives two additional pieces of information. The web app manifest describes the app identity and launch experience: its name, short name, icons, start URL, display mode, theme color, and optional scope or orientation. The service worker is a background script that can intercept requests and serve approved files from a cache. That second layer determines whether a repeat visit can load when the network is slow or unavailable.

A brochure page made from stable HTML and images can be cached safely. A shopping cart, checkout, account dashboard, membership area, or any page containing a visitor’s private data needs a different policy, usually a network requirement and an explicit cache exclusion. Installation also depends on the browser and device. A desktop or mobile Chromium-based browser normally offers the most complete install interface, while iPhone and iPad users install from Safari’s Share sheet.
Prerequisites and decisions to make first
Use HTTPS on the production site
Service workers and normal production PWA behavior require a secure origin. Install an SSL certificate, redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS, and make sure WordPress, the site URL, image URLs, scripts, and styles all resolve without mixed-content warnings. The localhost origin is the usual development exception; it can be used while building and testing before deployment.

HTTPS is more than a padlock for this project. A service worker is allowed to control pages only when the browser considers the origin trustworthy. If the site remains on plain HTTP, the manifest may be visible but the worker will not register, leaving you without reliable offline behavior or a normal install flow.
Decide what should work offline
Write down the pages that should remain useful without a connection. A sensible first version often includes the home page, an about page, contact information, key articles, stylesheets, JavaScript, and approved image assets. Then list routes that must always be fresh or private: cart, checkout, account, login, password-reset, search results that contain personal context, and any authenticated dashboard. Treat this list as a security boundary, not merely a performance preference.

Back up the WordPress database and files before changing caching or service-worker settings. Record the existing CDN and page-cache configuration. A service worker can continue serving an older cache after you change a plugin setting, so you need a way to clear the browser’s site data and purge intermediary caches while testing.
Choosing a WordPress PWA plugin
A plugin is the practical implementation path for most WordPress owners. Hyper PWA, PWA for WP, DevDiggers PWA, and Super Progressive Web Apps all document manifest and service-worker features. They are alternatives, not four plugins to run together. Install one, configure it, and remove or deactivate competing PWA plugins so that only one component controls the manifest and worker registration.
| Option | Setup complexity | Manifest and icon controls | Service-worker cache strategy | Offline fallback | Dynamic/private exclusions | Push notifications | Theme, security and CDN compatibility | Maintenance and updates | Custom code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyper PWA | Plugin setup is straightforward for a basic install; advanced behavior still needs testing. | Manifest fields and app icons are configurable through the plugin. | Service-worker behavior is configurable; select a policy that matches your content. | Offline and install behavior are documented features; verify the chosen fallback after activation. | Define exclusions for any personalized or transaction route. | Optional notification capability is documented; confirm what the current release supports. | The documentation warns that themes, security plugins, CDNs, and server rules can interfere. | Re-test after plugin, theme, CDN, or WordPress updates and clear old caches when settings change. | Not required for the basic setup; custom behavior may require development work. |
| PWA for WP | Plugin-based configuration; the amount of work depends on the site’s existing stack. | Manifest and service-worker features are documented, including app identity settings. | Use the controls supplied by the release and confirm which requests are cached. | Test the configured offline response instead of assuming every URL is available. | Keep account, cart, checkout, and other private paths outside the cache. | Notification support is optional and should be checked against the installed version. | Run a compatibility test with the active theme, security layer, and CDN. | Document your settings so they can be recreated after updates or a plugin change. | Not required for ordinary manifest and worker registration. |
| DevDiggers PWA | Moderate configuration because its documentation exposes more explicit cache decisions. | Configure the manifest, icons, launch URL, and related app settings. | Network-first behavior, cache duration, and cache rules are documented controls. | An offline fallback can be specified for requests that cannot reach the network. | Its documented exclusions include cart, checkout, and account pages; add other sensitive routes as needed. | Not stated by the plugin documentation; verify the current release before planning notifications. | Check interactions with the theme, security plugins, CDN, and server configuration. | Review cache duration and exclusions whenever content structure or commerce features change. | Basic conversion uses settings; unusual routing or bespoke fallbacks may need code. |
| Super Progressive Web Apps | Plugin-based setup for the standard manifest and service-worker path. | Configure the app name, short name, icons, start URL, and display choices exposed by the plugin. | Use its service-worker settings and validate the resulting requests in browser tools. | Confirm the actual offline page on a fresh visit and a repeat visit. | Exclude personalized and transactional routes before enabling broad caching. | Not stated by the plugin documentation; treat notifications as an optional feature to verify. | Test the complete stack because compatibility depends on more than the plugin alone. | Retest after updates and purge CDN or page-cache layers when worker files change. | Not required for the standard configuration. |
No single option is established as a universal winner. Choose the plugin whose controls match your site: a simple publishing site may need only manifest and basic caching fields, while a store or membership site needs clear network-first behavior, cache duration controls, and route exclusions.
Step-by-step: convert the site
1. Confirm the secure origin
- Open the public site using its HTTPS address.
- Check several page types, including an article, an image-heavy page, a form, and any logged-in area, for mixed-content or redirect errors.
- Make sure the WordPress Address and Site Address use the same HTTPS scheme and canonical hostname.
- Keep localhost available for development testing if you are building a custom integration, but do not treat it as proof that the production origin is ready.
2. Install one PWA plugin
- Back up the site and note your current page-cache and CDN settings.
- Install one of the documented PWA plugins from the WordPress administration area and activate it.
- Open the plugin’s settings screen and locate the manifest, icons, service-worker, cache, and offline sections. Labels differ between plugins and releases, so follow the controls shown by the installed version.
- Deactivate any other plugin that registers a manifest or service worker. Two workers or two manifest links make diagnosis harder and can produce inconsistent behavior.
3. Fill in the manifest
Enter an app name that can be shown in an install dialog and a shorter name that fits beneath a home-screen icon. Set the start URL to the page where an installed user should begin, normally the site’s canonical home URL or a dedicated app entry point. Select a display mode such as standalone only when the site remains usable without the browser’s normal address controls.

Set the theme and background colors to match the interface, then configure scope or orientation only if the plugin exposes those choices and your design genuinely needs them. Do not point the start URL at a route that requires a login unless every intended installer has access to it.
The plugin should add a manifest link to the HTML with rel='manifest'. Inspect the generated manifest in browser developer tools. Confirm that the name, short name, start URL, display setting, colors, and icon entries are valid JSON and that each referenced icon returns an image rather than a redirect or an HTML error page.
4. Add valid icons
Upload PNG icons in the sizes requested by the plugin. Use a square canvas, keep the important mark inside a safe margin, and check the result against both light and dark system backgrounds. A transparent logo that looks fine on the website can become unreadable when the operating system applies a mask or places it on a different color.
Open each icon URL directly in a private browser window. This catches permission errors, hotlink protection, CDN transformations, and incorrect MIME types before you try installation. Replace an icon rather than merely changing its filename when a stale CDN cache continues to serve the old artwork, then purge the relevant cache.

Choose how requests are answered when the network is available. A network-first policy tries the network and uses a cached response only when the request fails or times out. It is generally safer for WordPress pages that change frequently. A cache-first policy can be faster for immutable assets but can display old content until the cache is refreshed.
Set a cache duration where the plugin provides one. Shorter durations reduce staleness; longer durations improve resilience during outages. Decide whether the worker should cache HTML, styles, scripts, fonts, images, or only a deliberately selected set. Avoid broad rules that cache every response, especially when a response can include a user’s name, order, session token, or account data.

6. Create an offline fallback
Specify the page or response to show when a navigation request cannot reach the network and no suitable cached page exists. Keep that fallback lightweight: explain that the connection is unavailable, provide any already-cached navigation that is safe to expose, and avoid forms that appear to submit while the browser is offline. Test the fallback with a brand-new browser profile as well as a repeat visitor, because a repeat visitor may have cached assets that a first-time visitor does not.
7. Exclude sensitive and transactional routes
Add explicit exclusions for cart, checkout, account, login, password-reset, and other personalized routes. On a commerce site, also consider payment callbacks, order-confirmation pages, wish lists, and any endpoint that changes server state. The exact exclusion syntax depends on the plugin, but the principle is the same: those requests must go to the network and must not be fulfilled from a shared cache.
Recommended Free Tools
After saving exclusions, inspect requests while logged out and logged in. A page that appears correct when logged out can still leak stale or shared content when the same URL is opened by another account.
How installation works on each device
Chromium-based desktop and mobile browsers
After the manifest and service worker pass validation, the browser may show an install control in the address bar, browser menu, or a site-provided prompt. The prompt is conditional; a browser can withhold it when the manifest is invalid, the origin is not secure, the worker is not controlling the page, or the user has dismissed an earlier prompt. Test both a fresh profile and a profile that has already visited the site.
iPhone and iPad
Safari users generally install from the Share sheet rather than an automatic browser prompt. Open the site in Safari, choose Share, and select the command that adds the page to the Home Screen. The resulting icon and launch behavior depend on the manifest and the page metadata supplied by the plugin. Test on the iOS versions your audience actually uses; do not assume that a successful Chromium installation proves the Safari flow.
What an installed app can and cannot do
Installation creates a home-screen or desktop entry and can open the site in a more app-like display mode. It does not bypass WordPress permissions, create a native database, or guarantee offline access to pages that were never cached. Users still need a network for excluded routes and for content that has not yet been stored locally.

Validate the result before launch
Use the browser’s developer tools to inspect both the manifest and the service worker. Check registration status, scope, controlled clients, cache names, cached responses, and any console errors. A valid manifest alone is not enough; the worker must control the page after a reload, and the cache must contain only what you intended.
- Visit the site in a clean browser profile while online.
- Navigate through the pages you intend to support offline, allowing their assets to finish loading.
- Close and reopen the browser, then disable connectivity using the browser’s offline test control or the device’s network settings.
- Reload a cached page and confirm that the expected content or offline fallback appears.
- Open cart, checkout, account, and other excluded routes with connectivity disabled. They should fail safely or show a clear network-required message rather than a stale private response.
- Restore connectivity and verify that fresh content replaces the offline or cached response.
- Install the site on a Chromium-based browser and through Safari’s Share sheet on an iPhone or iPad.
- Repeat the test after clearing site data and after purging CDN and page-cache layers.
Troubleshooting common failures
The install option never appears
Confirm HTTPS first, then inspect the manifest for valid JSON, a reachable start URL, and valid PNG icons. Check that the service worker registered and controls the page after a reload. If the browser previously dismissed the prompt, use its site settings or a clean profile for testing. On iOS, use Safari’s Share sheet instead of waiting for a Chromium-style prompt.
The manifest is missing or blocked
Inspect the page source and developer tools for a manifest link. A theme can remove or rewrite head elements; a security plugin can block the file; a CDN can cache an old HTML response; and server rules can return the wrong content type or a redirect loop. Temporarily isolate those layers, correct the response, and purge their caches before testing again.
The service worker fails to register
Look for mixed-content errors, JavaScript exceptions, an incorrect worker path or scope, and a response that is not JavaScript. A worker can control only URLs within its scope, so a registration path that does not cover the pages you are testing will appear to work while doing nothing useful. Correct the origin or scope, reload, and unregister the failed worker before retesting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Visitors see old pages after an update
That is usually a cache lifecycle problem rather than a WordPress publishing problem. Change the worker or cache version through the plugin’s update mechanism, remove obsolete caches, and purge CDN and page-cache layers. Then test a first visit, a repeat visit, and a previously installed app. Do not solve staleness by caching sensitive routes for a shorter period; those routes should remain excluded.
Cart or account data appears stale
Stop broad caching immediately and add the affected paths to the exclusion list. Clear browser and CDN caches, sign out, and test with two separate accounts if possible. A private response that entered a shared cache must be treated as a security incident until you have confirmed that it is no longer being served.

Offline mode shows a blank page
Check whether the first visit completed before connectivity was disabled. Confirm that the fallback itself and its stylesheet are cached, and that the worker handles navigation requests rather than only static assets. Test a new profile to distinguish a missing fallback from an accidentally warm cache.
Maintenance after launch
Keep a short record of the manifest values, cache rules, exclusions, fallback URL, and icon files. Recheck them whenever you change themes, security plugins, CDN settings, checkout software, membership features, or URL structures. Those changes can alter the responses a worker sees even when the PWA plugin itself has not changed.
Plan a deliberate cache purge for releases that change JavaScript, CSS, images, or the offline page. Verify that the worker update reaches an already-installed browser, not just a new visitor. Review browser console errors and server logs after deployment, and periodically test both online and offline paths on the devices you support.
When custom development is justified
Stay with plugin settings when the site has conventional public pages and simple offline needs. Custom code becomes reasonable when you need route-specific strategies, background synchronization, an application shell assembled from several endpoints, unusual authentication behavior, or a bespoke notification system. Those additions increase the testing surface: document the worker scope, every cache name, every excluded route, and the update and rollback procedure before putting them into production.
Launch checklist
- Every production page and asset loads over HTTPS without mixed-content errors.
- Exactly one PWA implementation adds the manifest and registers the service worker.
- The manifest contains the intended name, short name, icons, start URL, display mode, colors, and any required scope or orientation.
- Browser developer tools show valid manifest data and an active worker controlling the expected pages.
- The cache policy, duration, and offline fallback are documented and tested.
- Cart, checkout, account, login, password-reset, and other personalized routes are excluded.
- A first-time visitor and a repeat visitor receive the intended online and offline responses.
- Chromium installation and iOS Safari’s Share-sheet installation have both been tested.
- Theme, security-plugin, server, CDN, and page-cache layers have been purged and retested after changes.
- A backup and rollback plan exists for the plugin, worker, manifest, and cache configuration.
With those checks complete, the WordPress site has a controlled PWA layer rather than an untested cache. The plugin supplies the plumbing; your manifest choices, route exclusions, and device testing determine whether the installed experience is dependable.
