Safari on iPad includes a built-in webpage-to-PDF workflow, so you do not need a converter app for ordinary pages. You can save the page exactly as rendered, annotate it with Markup first, send it immediately as a PDF, or switch to Reader view for a cleaner layout when that option is offered.
Save a Safari webpage as a PDF
- Open Safari. Navigate to the webpage you want to preserve and wait until the important content has loaded.
- Open the share sheet. Tap Safari’s Share button (the square with an upward arrow).
- Reveal more actions. In the share sheet, tap More if Markup is not visible in the first row.
- Choose Markup. Safari opens a PDF preview of the webpage. You can now highlight text, draw, or write notes.
- Finish editing. Tap Done when the page looks the way you want.
- Choose a destination. Tap Save File To, browse to a folder in Files, enter a filename and tap Save.
Apple describes this workflow as a way to “mark up a webpage, highlight your favorite parts, draw and write notes, and share your document as a PDF with others.” The labels can differ slightly between iPadOS releases, but the Share, Markup, Done and Save File To sequence is the essential path.
What the PDF contains
The PDF records the page as a document rather than preserving the live website. Dynamic menus, videos, log-in sessions and other interactive behavior may not work inside the saved file. If a page depends on scrolling to load images, scroll through the relevant sections first and allow them to finish loading before exporting.

Choose between a normal page, annotations and Reader view

Use Markup for an annotated handout
Markup is useful for circling a figure, underlining a requirement, adding a handwritten explanation or highlighting a quotation. Make the annotations before tapping Done; after saving, reopen the PDF from Files if you need to add more marks. An Apple Pencil is optional—finger input works for the same Markup tools.
Use Reader view for a cleaner article
On supported pages, tap Safari’s Reader controls in the address bar and switch to Reader view before opening the Share sheet. Reader view can remove navigation and other visual distractions. It is not available on every site, and a page that requires scripts, forms or a sign-in may not offer a useful Reader version.
Where the PDF is saved on iPad
The destination is chosen during Save File To, not automatically by the webpage. In the Files picker you can select iCloud Drive for access from other Apple devices, or an On My iPad folder for local storage. The exact folders shown depend on your enabled Files locations and available storage.

To find a document quickly, open Files, use the search field, and search the filename or “.pdf”. If it is not listed, check both iCloud Drive and On My iPad, then check the Downloads folder. A failed save can also mean the selected location is out of space or temporarily unavailable; choose another folder and try again.

Send a webpage directly as a PDF
When you only need to email or message the document, you can avoid keeping a separate local copy. Open the webpage, tap Share, then choose the Mail or messaging action that offers a PDF attachment. Safari’s share sheet supports sending a web page as a link, as a PDF or in Reader view. If the first share-sheet row shows only a link, tap More to reveal additional actions.
Direct sharing is convenient for one-time delivery. Save File To is safer when you need a reusable archive, a predictable filename or a copy that you can find later in Files.
Make the output reliable before you save
- Wait for the page to finish loading. Lazy-loaded images and charts may be missing if you export immediately.
- Open the exact state you need. Expand accordions, choose the required language and scroll through sections that load content on demand.
- Check the preview. Swipe through the PDF pages in Markup before tapping Done. If a heading or image is cut off, return to Safari and adjust the page state.
- Use landscape when the page is wide. Rotating the iPad before opening the share sheet can make tables and code easier to read, although the final pagination is controlled by Safari.
- Remove personal data first. Sign out or hide account details if the PDF will be shared outside your organisation.
- Keep free space available. A long, image-heavy page needs room for the PDF and any iCloud synchronisation.
Troubleshooting common problems
Markup is missing from the share sheet
Tap More and scroll through the available actions. If it still does not appear, confirm that Safari is the active app and that the share sheet is showing actions for the webpage rather than selected text. Updating iPadOS can also change where the action is displayed.
The PDF preview is blank or incomplete
Return to the page, reload it, and wait for images or embedded content to load. Pages behind a sign-in, bot check or script-dependent viewer may not render as a complete document. In those cases, use the site’s own download or print control when available, or save the readable sections separately.

Reader view is unavailable
Reader view is offered only on supported webpages. Use the normal Markup route instead; it does not require Reader view. A site may also disable Reader view for pages containing forms, dashboards or other interactive layouts.
The saved file cannot be found
Open Files and check the folder selected in the Save File To dialog. Search by the filename, then inspect iCloud Drive, On My iPad and Downloads. If the save was interrupted, repeat the export and select a folder with available space.
The page breaks awkwardly across pages
Safari’s PDF pagination is automatic. Try Reader view, rotate the iPad, reduce visible page clutter, or use the website’s print/export control. For a critical report, review every PDF page before distributing it.
The file is too large to send
Save it to Files first, then share it from the Files app. If the recipient’s service imposes an attachment limit, use a cloud link to the saved file or create a shorter PDF by exporting only the needed page range when the source site provides that option.

Which method should you use?
- Use Safari and Markup for a one-off PDF, handwritten notes or a document that must stay on the iPad.
- Use Reader view first when the page offers it and the priority is clean, article-style reading.
- Share directly as a PDF when you only need to deliver the page and do not need an archive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate PDF app for Safari exports?
No. Safari, Markup and Files provide the save-and-share workflow on iPad. A separate app is only necessary for editing or conversion features that Markup does not provide.
Can I rename the PDF after saving it?
Yes. In Files, touch and hold the document, choose Rename, enter the new filename and confirm.
Will Reader view work on every website?
No. Safari offers Reader view only on webpages it can convert to a simplified reading layout; otherwise use the standard Markup export.
