These are separate features rather than a shared cross-platform standard. The labels, menus and the place where the image is listed can change with an operating-system or app update. Follow the official workflow first; if the control is missing, use the troubleshooting section instead of assuming the phone cannot save a frame.

Save a frame on an iPhone with Apple Photos
Apple Photos has a specific command for extracting a paused frame. That is preferable to taking a screenshot when the command is available because it creates a separate photo entry through Photos’ own workflow.
Step 1: open the original video
- Launch Photos.
- Open the video that contains the moment you want.
- If you have several similar clips, start with the original recording rather than a copy that has already been edited or compressed.
The command is available from the video’s viewing screen. You do not need to open a separate editing app or connect the iPhone to a computer.
Step 2: pause on the exact moment
- Play the clip until the subject, expression or action is in the position you want.
- Tap the video to reveal playback controls if they are hidden.
- Pause. Move the playhead a small amount at a time if you need to refine the selection.
A frame is a single instant in the video. If the subject is moving quickly, check adjacent moments before committing; choosing a slightly earlier or later point can change a face, hand position or readable text.
Step 3: use Save Video Frame as Photo
- With playback paused, tap More, shown as the three-dot control.
- Choose Save Video Frame as Photo.
- Wait for Photos to finish the command, then return to your library or continue viewing the video.
Apple describes the feature as saving a frame from a video as a photo. The new still is independent of the video entry, so you can share or edit it like another image in Photos.
Step 4: find the new still
Apple’s location guidance depends on how the library is sorted:
- When the library is sorted by Added, the saved still appears at the bottom of the library.
- When the library is sorted by Captured, it appears beside the original video.
If you do not see it immediately, return to the library and check both the newest items and the date around the source video. The sort setting changes the apparent location; it does not mean the export failed.
What the iPhone workflow does—and does not—promise
The Apple guide confirms the command and the library behavior. It does not publish a universal exported-pixel dimension, a file-size guarantee or a quality comparison with screenshots. Do not describe the result as “full resolution” unless you have a separate specification for the particular device and video.

Export a frame on Android with Google Photos
On Android, Google Photos places frame extraction inside its video editor. The official action is called Export frame. Menu placement can differ between versions, so begin with the documented path and then use the interface-specific guidance below if necessary.
Step 1: open the clip in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos on the Android phone.
- Find and open the video.
- Tap the editing control to enter the video editor.
Google’s help page describes Export frame as an editor action. If the video opens only in playback and you cannot enter editing, check the compatibility section before trying random menus.
Step 2: select the desired point in the video
- In the editor, use the video strip or timeline to move to the moment you want.
- Pause or leave the playhead on that point so the preview shows the intended frame.
- Inspect the preview before exporting; moving the playhead changes which instant becomes the still.
The timeline is the important part of this process. Selecting a different point after opening a menu may change the exported image, so make the frame choice first.
Step 3: tap Export frame
- Look for Export frame in the editor.
- Tap it to create the still image.
- Return to your photo library and look for the newly created item.
Google documents the command but does not specify one album or sort position that applies to every current version. If the image is not visible in the first view, use Photos search, the newest-items view, or the date associated with the video.

When Export frame is hidden behind another control
Recent Google Photos Community guidance reports a layout in which the export command is not shown until you select the target point on the video strip and open the camera or timestamp control associated with that strip. The community discussion is guidance about a changing interface, not a universal specification, so treat it as a discovery path:
- Enter the editor and select the exact point on the video strip.
- Look for a camera-shaped or timestamp control near the strip.
- Open that control and check for Export frame.
- If the option still does not appear, close the editor, reopen the video and repeat the selection before looking for the control again.

Open the video again, move the playhead to the corrected instant and repeat the save command. Each export is based on the frame selected at the time you invoke the action; selecting a nearby point is often necessary for fast movement.
Troubleshooting Google Photos on Android
I cannot find the editor
Verify that the video is open in Google Photos rather than another gallery app. If the phone is a non-Pixel model running Android 9, Google’s help page says video editing is unavailable, so the missing editor is an expected compatibility limitation rather than a hidden button.

The editor opens, but Export frame is absent
- Select a point on the video strip.
- Inspect the controls adjacent to the strip for a camera or timestamp icon.
- Open that control and look for Export frame, following the recent Google Photos Community guidance.
- If the toolbar remains different, exit and reopen the video so the editor starts with a clean selection.

Return to the editor, move the playhead deliberately and confirm the preview before tapping Export frame. A timeline selection is more precise than repeatedly tapping the play button, particularly for short actions or speech.
