Review the generated text, shapes, frames, and spacing, then correct them manually or with follow-up prompts. Treat the result as a draft: screenshot clarity, visual complexity, and ambiguous elements directly affect what the tool can infer.
Choose the right workflow first
The best method depends on what you actually have and what you need to produce.

If your only input is an image, use the screenshot-converter steps below. If you can access the live interface, skip image interpretation and capture the rendered screen instead.
Convert a screenshot into editable Figma layers
1. Add and prepare the image
- Open a Figma Design file and drag the screenshot onto the canvas, or paste it from your clipboard.
- Make sure the image is large enough to read. Crop unrelated browser chrome, notification banners, or empty margins when they are not part of the design.
- Select the image layer. A clean, high-resolution screenshot with recognizable UI patterns gives the agent more useful visual evidence than a blurry or heavily compressed image.
2. Open Figma agent
Open the agent from Figma’s left side rail. Figma also lists Command+Enter on macOS and Control+Enter on Windows as shortcuts. If the agent is not visible, your account, seat, file permission, team setting, or beta availability may not qualify; check those conditions before troubleshooting the prompt.

3. Define the extraction scope
Tell the agent exactly what to reconstruct. A broad request can be useful for a first pass, while a narrow request gives you better control over a difficult component.
- Whole screen: “Recreate this dashboard as editable frames, text layers, cards, icons, and controls. Preserve the visible hierarchy and approximate spacing.”
- Named component: “Extract only the navigation bar and its menu items as editable layers.”
- Structure only: “Create the frame hierarchy and spacing; use placeholder text where characters are unclear.”
- Design-system guided: identify the library or variables the file should use, then ask the agent to follow those conventions where possible.
Describe the target by name and location rather than saying “convert everything.” For example, specify “the pricing cards in the center column” or “the mobile header at the top.”
4. Inspect and refine the result
When the agent finishes, inspect the canvas instead of accepting the first interpretation. Check text, line breaks, font weight, alignment, spacing, color, corner radius, icon meaning, and layer nesting. Ask follow-up questions such as “match the button height to the screenshot,” “separate each card into its own frame,” or “replace unreadable copy with a text placeholder.” You can also select a layer and edit it directly with normal Figma tools.
5. Make the design yours
Replace copied branding, text, imagery, and components with assets you are entitled to use. Convert the rough reconstruction into a real design by applying your own tokens, responsive constraints, component states, accessibility decisions, and interaction notes. A screenshot records one visual state; it does not reveal hover behavior, keyboard focus, validation errors, loading states, or responsive breakpoints.

Improve conversion quality before you prompt
Use a legible reference
- Use the highest-resolution source available and avoid screenshots that have been repeatedly resized.
- Keep text at a readable scale; tiny labels are often interpreted incorrectly.
- Remove overlays that are not part of the intended UI, unless you want them reconstructed.
- For a long page, process meaningful sections separately when a single image makes relationships ambiguous.
Control complexity
Clean layouts and familiar controls are easier to infer than unusual illustrations, custom iconography, dense data visualizations, or overlapping layers. Break a complex screen into regions and request each region by name. Compare the generated layer tree with the visual reference; a visually similar result can still have an unusable hierarchy.
Give explicit ambiguity instructions
If text cannot be read, request placeholders rather than invented copy. If an icon is unclear, label it “unknown icon” and replace it later. Tell the agent whether a shadow, border, or background belongs to the parent frame or to an individual card. These instructions reduce cleanup work.
When you have the live coded interface
A live page gives Figma pixels produced by real HTML, CSS, and JavaScript rather than an image that must be interpreted. Figma documents three capture-to-canvas routes:
- Chrome extension: capture the full screen or a selected element from the browser.
- Figma Make preview: copy layers from a Make preview into a design file.
- Remote Figma MCP code-to-canvas: capture a full screen or selected element and repeat the operation for multiple screens in a flow.
Captured layers can use compatible variables from a library already added to the file. They are not automatically mapped to your library’s components and styles, so expect to reconnect components and verify variables. Whole-page capture can be unreliable for scroll-driven effects, canvas-rendered content, and virtualized lists. Capture a specific element or stable viewport when the full page is incomplete.

This workflow documents a rendered interface as editable design frames. It does not turn arbitrary screenshots into production-ready source code. If implementation is your goal, use the captured design to plan and then write, test, and maintain the application separately.
Access, seats, and review responsibilities
Figma’s screenshot-converter page describes the agent as available on paid Figma plans and says the open beta described there does not consume AI credits. Figma’s AI Help Center says the beta rollout began May 20, 2026, access is rolling out to eligible users, and making edits requires a Full seat plus edit access to the file. Team administrators can disable AI. These statements cover different scopes, so check your current plan, seat type, permissions, administrator settings, and beta terms.
AI output can be misleading or wrong. Verify generated copy, hierarchy, measurements, and interpretation before using the design for a specification, handoff, or implementation. Do not use an inferred layer as evidence that the original product actually behaves that way.

The agent is missing
Confirm that you are in a Figma Design file, have the required paid plan and Full seat, can edit the file, and that your team administrator has not disabled AI. Beta access is rolling out, so an eligible plan alone may not guarantee immediate access.
The output is one flat image
Make sure the screenshot layer is selected before prompting. Ask explicitly for editable text, shapes, frames, and separate components. If the source is too small or complex, crop to one region and try again.

Text or icons are wrong
Provide a higher-resolution crop, request placeholders for unreadable text, and replace icons manually. Do not silently keep invented labels in a handoff file.
The live capture is incomplete
Disable animations where possible, wait for the content to settle, and capture a selected element instead of the entire page. Canvas-rendered graphics, scroll effects, and virtualized lists may require a static state or manual recreation.
The design looks right but behaves wrong
Remember that a screenshot contains no interaction model. Add responsive constraints, component states, keyboard behavior, content rules, and accessibility requirements yourself, then validate them in a prototype or coded build.

Can I convert a screenshot directly into HTML or React?
The documented Figma workflows create editable design layers or captured frames. They do not promise production-ready HTML or React; implementation remains a separate engineering task.
Should I convert the entire page at once?
Only when the screenshot is clear and the hierarchy is simple. For dense or ambiguous screens, named regions and selected elements usually give you more controllable results.
Will my design-system components be applied automatically?
No. Live captures can use compatible variables from a library already added to the file, but captured layers are not automatically mapped to library components and styles.
