Imgur is quickest for a one-off image, Google Drive gives the clearest permission controls, Dropbox fits screenshots already stored there, and ShareX can automate the process on Windows. Before sharing, remove secrets and remember that an unlisted link can still be viewed by anyone who receives it.
Choose the right kind of screenshot link
The service you choose changes what the recipient sees and how much control you retain.

Method 1: Upload to Imgur
Imgur is the simplest dedicated image-host route when you need a link quickly and do not need team permissions.
- Open Imgur and select New post.
- Browse to the screenshot or drag it into the upload window.
- When the upload finishes, use the share-link controls or copy the image address. The direct image address is useful when a ticket, chat or HTML page should display the image itself.
- Choose Hidden for an unlisted post, or Public if the post should be searchable and visible in your profile.
Imgur defines a hidden post as one “not shared with the general Imgur community and … accessed via the URL.” Anyone who obtains that URL can therefore view it. Hidden is unlisted, not private. If you upload while signed out, retain the URL: anonymous uploads are harder to find and manage later.

When Imgur is a good fit
- You need a direct image URL for a support ticket or chat.
- The screenshot is non-sensitive and a simple visibility choice is enough.
- You do not need organization-wide ownership or role-based permissions.
Method 2: Create a controlled Google Drive link
Drive is preferable when the file must remain attached to an account and you may later change or revoke access.
- Upload the screenshot to Google Drive.
- Select the file and click Share.
- Under General access, choose Anyone with the link if recipients do not already have access.
- Set the role to Viewer unless people genuinely need to comment or edit.
- Click Copy link, then paste that viewer/share URL into your ticket or message.
Google says files and folders stored in Drive can be shared with anyone and documents Viewer, Commenter and Editor roles. Drive links generally open a viewer or share page rather than the raw image file. The owner’s name and email can be visible when a file is shared, so use an account appropriate for public-facing material.
Change or revoke access later
Return to the file’s Share dialog, change General access to Restricted, or change individual roles. This account-backed control is the main advantage over an anonymous upload.
Method 3: Use Dropbox’s screenshot workflow
Dropbox is convenient if your screenshots already belong in a Dropbox folder. Its documented Windows workflow can save screenshots made with supported native computer shortcuts and expose Copy link to clipboard.

- Confirm that the Dropbox desktop app and the supported screenshot shortcut are configured.
- Take the screenshot with that supported shortcut.
- Let Dropbox save the image to the designated folder.
- Use Dropbox’s Copy link to clipboard option and paste the result where needed.
Check the platform requirements before relying on this automation. Dropbox notes that screenshots made with the Windows Snipping Tool do not save through that particular automatic workflow. If your capture method is unsupported, save the file normally and upload it to Dropbox before copying its share link.
Method 4: Automate uploads with ShareX on Windows
ShareX is useful when you create and share screenshots repeatedly. It separates the capture, upload and clipboard steps so one shortcut can produce a URL.
- Install and open ShareX.
- Choose an image destination in the destination settings. ShareX’s custom uploader support also allows compatible image, text and file destinations, including your own storage.
- Under After capture tasks, enable Upload image to host.
- Under After upload tasks, enable Copy URL to clipboard.
- Take a test capture with a non-sensitive image. Verify that the URL opens in a private browser window before using the shortcut for real support cases.
Once configured, ShareX captures the image, uploads it and places the returned URL on your clipboard. A custom uploader is useful when your organization requires a particular host or storage policy.
How to make a screenshot link for a support ticket
- Redact passwords, API keys, tokens, personal addresses, private messages and customer data.
- Choose the destination based on the ticket’s audience: Imgur Hidden for a quick unlisted image, Drive Viewer for account-managed access, Dropbox for an existing team folder, or ShareX for a repeat workflow.
- Upload the image and copy the URL.
- Open the link in a private browser window or a browser where you are signed out. This checks whether recipients can actually access it.
- Paste the link with a short description of what the screenshot shows and the relevant timestamp or steps.
- Keep the link or file record if you may need to delete the upload later, especially for anonymous hosting.
Privacy and access checks before you share
- Remove secrets: crop or redact credentials, recovery codes, API keys, addresses, names and private conversations.
- Check visibility: Public Imgur posts can be searchable; Hidden posts are reachable by URL; Drive’s Anyone with the link setting allows anyone who receives the URL to open it.
- Use the least privilege: choose Drive Viewer unless commenting or editing is required.
- Consider identity exposure: Google Drive may show the owner’s name and email on a shared file.
- Test as a recipient: a signed-out or private-window check catches links that only work while you are logged in.
- Plan deletion: account-backed services make later removal easier. Keep anonymous-host URLs if deletion may matter.

The recipient sees a permission error
For Drive, open Share and verify General access is Anyone with the link, with the intended role. If the file is in a restricted organization folder, an administrator policy may override that setting; use an approved shared location or add the recipient explicitly.

The link opens a page, not the image
That is normal for many cloud-drive links. Use the host’s image-address or direct-link control when a raw image is required, or tell the recipient to open the viewer page. Do not assume a viewer URL will work as an <img> source.

A Hidden Imgur link was discovered
Hidden means unlisted, not confidential. Remove the post if the image is sensitive, then upload a redacted version to a destination with appropriate account controls.
Dropbox did not save the screenshot automatically
Check whether the capture used a supported native shortcut. Dropbox specifically excludes screenshots made with the Windows Snipping Tool from that automatic workflow. Save the image manually and upload it, or use ShareX for a configurable capture-to-upload process.
ShareX copied the wrong URL or no URL
Verify that an image destination is selected, Upload image to host is enabled under after-capture tasks, and Copy URL to clipboard is enabled under after-upload tasks. Test with a non-sensitive image and inspect the upload response before changing hosts.

The screenshot contains a secret
Delete or revoke the shared file where possible, rotate exposed credentials, and create a redacted replacement. Treat every URL already pasted into a ticket, chat or forum as potentially copied.

Can I turn a screenshot on my computer into a URL without attaching the file?
Yes. Upload it to Imgur, Drive or Dropbox, then paste the generated share URL. ShareX can automate the upload and clipboard steps on Windows.
Is an unlisted screenshot link private?
No. An unlisted or Hidden link is not indexed or publicly listed, but anyone who receives the URL can open it.
Which method is easiest for a team?
