Samsung DeX lets a compatible Galaxy phone drive an external monitor or TV with a desktop-style interface. Your phone supplies the processor, storage and apps; the larger screen provides windows, a taskbar and a workspace that feels more like a computer. It is not a Windows or macOS installation, but it can handle many browser, email, document, messaging and media tasks without a separate computer.
The most reliable setup is wired: connect the phone to an HDMI display with a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. Wireless DeX removes the cable but requires both a supported Galaxy model and a Miracast-capable display. A keyboard and mouse are optional because the phone can work as a touchpad, although physical input is much better for extended typing.

What Samsung DeX actually does
DeX is a desktop-like mode for Android apps installed on your Galaxy phone. When DeX starts, the connected monitor or TV shows a desktop workspace with resizable app windows, a taskbar, notifications and familiar pointer-based controls. The phone remains the source device and can continue handling phone functions while the external screen displays DeX.
That distinction matters. DeX does not convert the phone into a conventional Windows or macOS PC, and it does not automatically make every desktop application available. You are still using mobile apps, with their own feature sets, licenses and compatibility limits. A browser, office suite, file manager, video player or messaging app may work well; another app may remain phone-only, open in a fixed layout or refuse to run in DeX.

Samsung Canada describes DeX as supporting up to five apps simultaneously. Treat that as a vendor-stated product limit rather than a universal performance guarantee: how many apps remain comfortable to use depends on the phone, the apps, available memory and the display resolution.
Check compatibility before buying anything
Do these checks before ordering a cable, adapter or display. Wireless support is model-specific, and older Galaxy phones may need a cable or another connection device even when a newer phone supports Wireless DeX.
- Phone: identify the exact Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s current US Wireless DeX support list includes the Note9, Note10 and Note20 families; S9 through S26 series models; Z Fold and Z Flip families; the A90 5G; and selected Galaxy Tab models. This is a US support list, not a promise that every Galaxy phone or every regional variant supports wireless mode.
- Display for wired DeX: the monitor or TV needs an HDMI input. The phone-to-display path is USB-C on the phone and HDMI on the screen, using a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable.
- Display for wireless DeX: the TV or monitor must support Miracast and the phone must appear on Samsung’s Wireless DeX compatibility list. Samsung specifically identifies 2018-and-later Samsung TVs and Samsung Smart Monitors among supported display types.
- Apps: check the individual app’s DeX behavior and license terms if the setup is for work or school. Samsung’s tablet guidance warns that some apps may not work in DeX or may require a license.
- Input: decide whether the phone’s touchpad mode is sufficient or whether you need Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse support.
Support pages and menus can change with software, device generation and market. Use the Samsung support page for your country and the exact model number, rather than assuming that support for one Galaxy phone extends to another.

Both modes put the same basic DeX workspace on a larger screen. The practical difference is how the display connection is established and how much uncertainty you accept.
| Consideration | Wired DeX | Wireless DeX |
|---|---|---|
| Phone connection | USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable | Wi-Fi display connection using Miracast |
| Display requirement | HDMI input | Miracast support; Samsung lists 2018-and-later Samsung TVs and Samsung Smart Monitors |
| Compatibility risk | Usually easier to diagnose because the cable path is explicit; the exact phone and adapter still matter | Requires a supported phone, supported display and successful wireless negotiation |
| Responsiveness | Samsung notes that some 2018 TVs may work better over HDMI | Keeping the phone near the display can reduce stuttering or lag |
| Best use | Desk work, presentations, travel setups where reliability matters | Occasional use when you want a cable-free room setup |
| Extra hardware | Adapter or cable; optional multiport adapter for wired USB peripherals | No display cable; a Miracast receiver may be relevant for a display without built-in Miracast, but compatibility is not guaranteed |
If you are choosing one approach for a work-critical setup, start with wired HDMI. Wireless is convenient, but it adds display-discovery, Miracast and radio-environment variables that a cable avoids.
Set up wired Samsung DeX on a monitor or TV
1. Prepare the phone and display
- Confirm that the Galaxy model supports wired DeX.
- Turn on the monitor or TV and select the HDMI input you plan to use.
- Have a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable ready. If you want wired USB peripherals, use a multiport adapter that connects to the phone and provides the necessary USB ports.
2. Add a keyboard and mouse if you want conventional PC input
Pair Bluetooth devices before or after connecting the display through the phone’s Bluetooth settings. For wired keyboard and mouse use, connect both to the multiport adapter described in Samsung’s setup guidance. This is optional: DeX can start with only the phone, and the phone can serve as a touchpad.

3. Make the physical connection
- Connect the USB-C end of the adapter or cable to the Galaxy phone.
- Connect the HDMI end to the monitor or TV.
- Unlock the phone if it asks for authentication or permission.
4. Start DeX
- When the DeX prompt appears on the phone, tap Start.
- If no prompt appears, open Quick Settings and tap the DeX icon.
- If the screen is mirroring the phone instead of showing the desktop, use the DeX notification or Quick Settings control to switch into DeX.
5. Arrange the workspace
Open apps from the DeX launcher, resize windows and place frequently used programs on the taskbar. The phone can continue handling phone functions, and it can be used as the touchpad when a physical mouse is not connected.

Save work before unplugging. Samsung warns that DeX may restart when the cable is disconnected, so an unexpected removal can interrupt open tasks.
Set up Wireless DeX
1. Verify both ends of the wireless connection
The Galaxy phone must support Wireless DeX, and the television or monitor must support Miracast. Samsung lists 2018-and-later Samsung TVs and Samsung Smart Monitors as supported display categories. A generic wireless-casting feature is not automatically equivalent to Miracast, so check the display’s specifications or on-screen connection menu.
2. Open the DeX connection control
- Turn on the display and leave it ready to accept a wireless connection.
- On the phone, open Quick Settings and tap DeX. Alternatively, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly.
3. Select and authorize the display
- Choose the display from the list of available devices.
- Tap Start now on the phone.
- Approve the connection on the TV or monitor if an authorization prompt appears.
4. Improve wireless responsiveness
Keep the phone near the wireless display. Samsung identifies proximity as a way to help reduce stuttering or lag. If the workspace remains unreliable after checking Miracast and accepting the display prompt, switch to a wired HDMI connection.
Choose the right input method
Use the Galaxy phone as a touchpad
This costs nothing extra and is enough for opening apps, clicking buttons and navigating a short session. It is less comfortable for precise drag-and-drop work, spreadsheet editing or long periods of pointer movement. Keep the phone accessible rather than leaving it across the room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
Bluetooth avoids another cable and is the simplest upgrade for a desk setup. Pair each device in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then use the keyboard for text entry and the mouse for window management. Battery level, pairing state and interference become additional things to monitor, but the workspace is much closer to a conventional computer.

Connect wired USB peripherals
Samsung’s described wired arrangement uses a multiport adapter connected to the phone. Plug the keyboard and mouse into the adapter, then connect the adapter to the phone and the HDMI display path as appropriate. A multiport adapter is useful when one USB-C port must handle display output and USB accessories at the same time; verify that the particular adapter supports the phone and the required outputs.
What you can realistically do in DeX
DeX is most useful when the phone already contains the files, accounts and apps you need. A large display gives browser tabs, email, documents, calendars, messaging and media more room than the phone screen. Windowed multitasking can make it practical to reference one app while writing in another.
Before depending on DeX for a specific job, open the exact app and test its behavior. Some mobile apps offer a well-adapted desktop layout; others display a phone-shaped window, lack keyboard shortcuts or block external-display use. A required subscription or license may also apply. Samsung’s guidance explicitly treats app support as variable, so do not infer compatibility from the fact that an app installs on the phone.

The display stays blank
- Confirm that the TV or monitor is on the correct HDMI input.
- Reseat both ends of the USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable.
- Check that the phone model supports wired DeX and that the adapter is compatible.
- Unlock the phone and look for the DeX prompt.
- Try Quick Settings > DeX if the prompt did not appear.
- Test a different HDMI input or another display to separate a display problem from a phone or adapter problem.
The phone is mirrored instead of showing DeX
Mirroring means the display connection exists, but DeX mode has not been selected. Open the DeX notification or Quick Settings control and switch into DeX. If the option is missing, recheck the adapter, cable seating and phone compatibility. Samsung’s display troubleshooting guidance also recommends trying another display when the behavior persists.
DeX disconnects or restarts
Inspect the cable for a loose connection and avoid moving the phone or adapter while working. Save before disconnecting because Samsung notes that unplugging the cable may restart DeX. If the issue continues on one display, test another monitor or TV to identify a compatibility issue.

Troubleshoot Wireless DeX
The display does not appear
- Confirm that the display supports Miracast, not merely an unrelated casting standard.
- Verify that the exact Galaxy model supports Wireless DeX.
- Turn on the display’s wireless-display or screen-sharing receiver before searching from the phone.
- Open Quick Settings > DeX, or use Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly, and search again.
The display asks for permission
Approve the connection request on the TV or monitor. Wireless DeX cannot complete the session until the receiving display accepts it.
The desktop lags or stutters
Move the phone closer to the display and reduce obstacles or competing wireless activity where possible. If the problem remains, use a wired HDMI connection. Wired mode removes the Miracast negotiation and wireless-performance variables.
Plan a dependable DeX setup
For a permanent desk
Use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI connection, keep a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse paired, and leave the display on the correct HDMI input. A wired setup is easier to repeat and troubleshoot than wireless mode.
For a living-room TV
Wireless DeX is convenient when the TV supports Miracast and the phone is on Samsung’s supported-model list. Keep the phone near the TV and treat the session as convenient rather than mission-critical if the wireless environment is busy.
For travel
Carry the phone, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable and, if needed, a compact Bluetooth keyboard. Check the destination display’s HDMI input before relying on the setup. Do not assume that an unfamiliar TV supports Wireless DeX.
For work or school
Test every required app, account, file workflow and license before replacing a laptop. Confirm that the display, input devices and external-display behavior meet the organization’s privacy and security requirements.
How to disconnect safely
- Save documents and finish transfers in open apps.
- Exit or close active DeX work as needed.
- For wireless mode, use the DeX controls on the phone to end the connection.
- For wired mode, disconnect after saving; Samsung warns that removing the cable can restart DeX.
Ending the display session does not erase your phone’s apps or files. It simply returns the phone to its normal mobile interface after the external workspace closes.
The practical verdict
A compatible Galaxy phone can replace a light desktop for many everyday tasks when paired with an external screen. Wired USB-C-to-HDMI DeX is the safer choice for responsiveness and compatibility; Wireless DeX is cleaner and more convenient when both devices support Miracast and the exact phone is approved. Start with compatibility checks, add a keyboard and mouse only if your workload needs them, and test critical apps before treating DeX as your only computer.
