The supported workflow described for this use case connects Jellyfin to ErsatzTV, which schedules selected Jellyfin media into virtual channels and publishes two feeds: an M3U playlist for channel playback and an XMLTV feed for programme-guide data. You then add those feeds in Jellyfin under Dashboard → Live TV. The result behaves like a channel lineup built from your own films and shows; it is not over-the-air television and does not require a physical tuner.
What you are building
The finished system has three roles. Jellyfin remains your media server and the place where you watch the channels. ErsatzTV reads selected Jellyfin libraries, applies the schedules you create, and presents each virtual channel as a stream. Jellyfin’s Live TV screen consumes the channel list and programme metadata through separate network endpoints.

Because the channel streams are generated from your existing library, a broadcast antenna, cable subscription or dedicated TV tuner is not part of this setup. A physical tuner is a separate input option for bringing live broadcast television into Jellyfin.
What you need before starting
- A working Jellyfin server. Know its server address as seen from the machine running ErsatzTV. Use the address that the two services can actually reach, rather than assuming that
localhostis valid across separate machines or containers. - An ErsatzTV installation. Installation details and product versions change, so use the current ErsatzTV installation documentation for your operating system instead of copying an old command. The available setup material does not establish a single current version or universal installation command.
- Libraries worth scheduling. Decide which Jellyfin libraries should be synchronized. You can use different selections for different channel concepts, such as a film-only lineup or a genre-focused schedule.
- Network access between services. ErsatzTV must reach Jellyfin’s API and stream the selected items. If both services run on different hosts, check firewall rules, container networking and the address advertised by Jellyfin.
- Administrative access to Jellyfin. Creating an API key and changing Live TV settings require an administrator account.
Create the Jellyfin API key
ErsatzTV uses Jellyfin’s API rather than a manual export of your library. Create a dedicated key so you can identify and revoke this integration without changing a personal password.

- Sign in to Jellyfin with an administrator account.
- Open Dashboard → Advanced → API Keys.
- Create a new key and give it a recognizable name, such as ErsatzTV. Copy the key immediately and store it securely; you will enter it in ErsatzTV.
- Confirm that the Jellyfin server address you plan to enter is reachable from the ErsatzTV host.
An API key grants programmatic access to the server. Treat it like a credential: do not paste it into public posts, commit it to a configuration repository, or include it in a URL that you share.
Connect ErsatzTV to Jellyfin
In ErsatzTV, add Jellyfin as a media source. Enter the Jellyfin server address and the API key you created, then select the libraries that ErsatzTV should synchronize. Synchronization determines which items are available when you design schedules; it does not require you to duplicate the media files.
Allow the initial synchronization to finish before diagnosing missing programmes. A library that has not completed its sync can make a channel appear empty even though Jellyfin itself plays the same title normally. If you later add a new library or large batch of media, return to the media-source settings and synchronize again so ErsatzTV can use the additions.

Choose a sensible library scope
- One subject per source or channel group: Selecting focused libraries makes it easier to build a predictable lineup.
- Separate films and series when schedules differ: A film channel and an episodic channel have different programme lengths and guide expectations.
- Avoid syncing content the service cannot play: Start with a small, known-good library, verify playback, then expand the selection.
ErsatzTV’s current interface is the authority for creating channels, schedules and their names. Product labels can change, but the output you need from it is stable: an M3U URL and an XMLTV URL for the channels you configured.
Make sure ErsatzTV can reach the media
There are two ways for ErsatzTV to obtain the actual video. By default, it can stream items through Jellyfin. In that arrangement, ErsatzTV asks Jellyfin for the media and does not need to see the underlying disk path.

Direct disk access is another option. It can be useful when your deployment is designed for both services to read the same files, but it introduces a path-mapping requirement. Both services must be able to access the same shares or mounts, and the path visible to Jellyfin may not be identical to the path visible to ErsatzTV.
When to use path replacements
If Jellyfin reports a file under one path and ErsatzTV sees that share under another, configure a path replacement in ErsatzTV that maps the Jellyfin path to ErsatzTV’s local path. For example, a mount presented as one directory inside Jellyfin may be mounted under a different directory in the ErsatzTV host or container. The mapping must point to the real location that ErsatzTV can read.

- Check capitalization and trailing slashes in both paths.
- Prefer the Jellyfin-streaming method if shared mounts are difficult to maintain.
A path replacement fixes file-location mismatches; it does not grant permissions. Operating-system, share and container permissions still have to allow the ErsatzTV process to read the media.
Build and publish your virtual channels in ErsatzTV
Use ErsatzTV’s channel and scheduling tools to decide what each channel plays and in what order. A channel can represent a genre, a library, a studio collection or any other grouping supported by the media and scheduling controls available in your installed version. The important distinction is that the channel is a programmed stream, not a new copy of every file.
After you have at least one usable channel, locate the integration endpoints in ErsatzTV. You need both:

Keep the two URLs from the same ErsatzTV configuration. If you change channel names or schedules, use the current endpoints and refresh Jellyfin’s data rather than mixing an old playlist with a newer guide.

- In Jellyfin, open Dashboard → Live TV.
- Choose Add tuner device.
- Set the tuner type to M3U Tuner.
- Enter the M3U URL supplied by ErsatzTV. Jellyfin can use a web URL or a local playlist file; the web URL is the natural choice when ErsatzTV is serving the feed.
- Save the tuner and wait for Jellyfin to retrieve the channel list.
Jellyfin’s M3U settings also expose a simultaneous-stream limit. Set a limit only when you need to protect the server or the upstream stream source; a low value can prevent legitimate household viewing. Some remote playlist sources require a custom user agent, but that is a source-specific setting rather than a requirement of the ErsatzTV workflow. Enable auto-loop only when a stream fails to play correctly without looping; it is not a general fix for guide or channel-discovery problems.
Add the XMLTV guide feed
- Remain in Dashboard → Live TV and add a TV Guide Data Provider.
- Select XMLTV as the provider type.
- Enter the XMLTV URL supplied by ErsatzTV.
- Save the provider and allow Jellyfin to import the guide data.
The M3U feed and XMLTV feed solve different problems. A working playlist can produce playable channels with no programme names, while a working XMLTV feed cannot create a channel that is absent from the playlist. Configure both before judging the result.
Map guide data when Jellyfin requests it
Jellyfin’s guide workflow may ask you to map guide entries to the corresponding tuner channels. Match each XMLTV channel to the channel with the same identity in the M3U lineup. If a channel plays but shows “No data” or an unrelated schedule, recheck the mapping rather than changing the media files.
Refresh and verify the result
- Open Jellyfin’s Live TV overview and confirm that the tuner is present and reports a healthy status.
- Use the available manual refresh control in the Live TV settings after changing an endpoint or schedule. Guide data is also refreshed periodically, so an immediate change may not appear until the next refresh.
- Open one virtual channel and let it play long enough to confirm that the stream starts and advances.
- Open the programme guide and check that the current and upcoming entries correspond to the schedule you created in ErsatzTV.
- Test a second channel. One successful stream proves connectivity for that channel, not necessarily that every mapped path, codec or schedule is correct.
Verify playback from the clients your household actually uses. A channel that works in a browser but fails on a television app can indicate a client-format or transcoding limitation rather than a broken M3U or XMLTV configuration.

Troubleshoot by symptom
No channels appear after saving the M3U tuner
- Open the M3U URL from the ErsatzTV host or another machine on the same network. If it cannot be reached, fix the address, firewall or container network first.
- Confirm that the URL is the current playlist endpoint and that ErsatzTV has completed its library synchronization.
- Check that at least one channel has a schedule and playable media. An empty configuration can yield no useful lineup.
- Use Jellyfin’s manual tuner refresh after correcting the source.
Channels appear, but playback fails
- Test the same item directly in Jellyfin. If it fails there, resolve Jellyfin’s media or permission issue before debugging the integration.
- If ErsatzTV is configured for direct paths, verify shared mounts, service-account permissions and path replacements.
- Switching to streaming through Jellyfin can isolate a path-mapping problem.
- Check whether the failure affects every channel or only media stored in one location. A location-specific pattern usually points to a mount or replacement error.
Playback works but the guide is blank
- Confirm that the XMLTV provider was added separately from the M3U tuner.
- Verify that the XMLTV URL is reachable and comes from the same ErsatzTV setup as the playlist.
- Run a manual guide refresh and allow for the provider’s import cycle.
- Map XMLTV entries to the matching tuner channels if Jellyfin presents a mapping screen.
The guide shows the wrong programme
- Check that the channel identity in the XMLTV data matches the channel selected in Jellyfin.
- Refresh both feeds after renaming channels or changing schedules.
- Look for an old tuner or provider entry that is still enabled; duplicate sources can make it appear that a change was ignored.
Only some titles are missing
- Confirm that the relevant Jellyfin library was selected for synchronization.
- Wait for synchronization after adding or moving files.
- For direct access, compare the path stored by Jellyfin with the path visible to ErsatzTV and update the replacement mapping.
- Check permissions on the specific share or file rather than assuming the whole library is unavailable.
Virtual channels versus broadcast television

Jellyfin supports HDHomeRun and M3U tuners, and its documentation notes that additional tuner types can be supplied through plugins. That plugin capability should not be confused with the ErsatzTV arrangement: here, Jellyfin is consuming an M3U and XMLTV integration, not installing a plugin that generates channels from library files.
Operational choices and trade-offs
Stream through Jellyfin or share the disks?
Streaming through Jellyfin minimizes filesystem coordination and is the default ErsatzTV behavior. Shared filesystem access can reduce an extra streaming hop in some layouts, but it requires stable mounts, matching permissions and path replacements whenever the two services use different directory names.
Use one broad lineup or several focused channels?
A broad lineup is simpler to maintain but less predictable for viewers. Focused channels make the guide easier to understand and let you schedule by genre, library or collection, at the cost of more schedules and more channel mappings to maintain. Start with a small lineup, confirm both feeds, then add channels incrementally.
How much concurrency should you allow?
The simultaneous-stream setting in Jellyfin’s M3U tuner is a control, not a performance guarantee. Set it according to the capacity of your server and network and the number of viewers you expect. If playback stops when a second viewer joins, inspect this limit before changing the guide configuration.

Maintenance checklist
- Keep the ErsatzTV and Jellyfin server addresses stable, or update the integration when they change.
- Regenerate or revoke the Jellyfin API key if it is exposed, and update ErsatzTV with the replacement.
- Resynchronize libraries after adding content or changing which libraries are included.
- After changing channel names or schedules, refresh the M3U tuner and XMLTV provider in Jellyfin.
- Periodically test one channel from each media location and one guide entry from each channel group.
- Review current ErsatzTV installation and upgrade instructions before applying a version-specific update; installation commands and product versions are not fixed by this setup description.
What this setup does not provide
- It does not receive antenna, cable or satellite broadcasts.
- It does not make a physical tuner mandatory.
- It does not eliminate the need for an XMLTV provider when you want programme-guide information.
- It does not bypass Jellyfin or ErsatzTV permissions; both services still need access to the API and media stream.
- It does not guarantee that every Jellyfin client can play every generated stream without transcoding.
For the library-to-channel use case, the practical answer is therefore an ErsatzTV-to-Jellyfin integration: synchronize the libraries, create schedules in ErsatzTV, add its M3U URL as Jellyfin’s tuner, add its XMLTV URL as the guide provider, map channels if prompted, and refresh the Live TV data.
