How to Turn a Game Series Into a Fun Racing Game Concept

Start with the feeling that makes the series special, not its character list. Translate that player fantasy into a driving verb, a repeatable race loop, and track geometry that makes the verb matter. Then prototype one short event, test whether the identity and handling are clear, and expand only after the core is fun.

1. Define the series’ player promise

Write one sentence describing what players actually enjoy doing or feeling in the source series. A useful promise is experiential: “I feel clever because I combine powers under pressure,” “I feel daring because I take risky routes for a reward,” or “I feel powerful because I outmaneuver a stronger opponent.” Do not begin with “the game has ten characters and five locations.” Those are assets; the promise is the reason anyone cares about them.

Separate the promise from surface identity. A logo, costume, or familiar name can attract attention, but it cannot make steering enjoyable. Ask what would still matter if the characters were replaced with temporary shapes. The answer becomes the foundation for your racing adaptation.

The origin of WipEout illustrates this separation. Artist Jim Bowers had created a film of two ships dogfighting around a track. Designer Nick Burcombe separately remembered the exhilaration of a difficult Super Mario Kart race played with different music, describing it as, “I had a zen moment were everything flowed perfectly.” Combining a visual fantasy with a specific feeling led to anti-gravity racing rather than a conventional kart clone.

A one-page promise test

  • Emotion: What should a player feel during a successful lap?
  • Skill: What improves with practice—timing, spatial planning, aggression, cooperation or improvisation?
  • Pressure: What makes the decision difficult: speed, limited resources, opponents, hazards or time?
  • Payoff: What visible event tells the player that the risky choice worked?
  • Distinctiveness: Why could this feeling not be delivered by an unrelated racing game?

If your answer is only “because it uses the series’ characters,” the concept needs another pass.

2. Convert the promise into racing verbs

Turn the promise into two or three actions players repeat every few seconds. Possible verbs include steer, brake, drift, draft, attack, evade, jump, transform, cooperate and route-plan. A strong concept gives each verb a decision and a consequence.

Promise Racing verbs Recurring decision Mistake consequence
Feel clever combining powers Switch forms, chain abilities, route-plan Spend a power now or save it for a better corner Lose speed, miss a shortcut or enter the next section without a tool
Feel daring through risky routes Jump, draft, brake late Take the fast exposed line or the slower safe line Crash, fall behind or give rivals a catch-up opportunity
Feel dominant in a rivalry Attack, block, evade Defend position or attempt a takedown Spin out, damage the vehicle or surrender track position
Feel resourceful in a hostile world Scavenge, repair, reroute Detour for a resource or maintain racing speed Arrive at a later event under-equipped

Keep the loop compact enough to explain in one breath: “Drift through technical corners to charge a power, then choose whether to spend it on a shortcut or on an opponent.” If the explanation requires a long inventory of exceptions, the core is not yet focused.

Use event rules to change pressure

A racing adaptation does not need every event to be a standard lap race. Dangerous Driving’s developers described modes built around takedowns, elimination, pursuit, survival and conventional racing. The lesson is not to copy a list of modes; it is to use a different rule only when it changes the player’s decisions.

  • Standard race: rewards line choice, pace and consistency.
  • Elimination: makes survival and early positioning important.
  • Pursuit: turns the opponent into a moving objective rather than a pack to pass.
  • Survival: makes damage, repairs or time the scarce resource.
  • Takedown: rewards controlled collisions and target selection.

Choose one primary format first. Add another only if it reveals a different part of the series’ promise instead of renaming the same race.

3. Design handling before decoration

Pick an intended vehicle feel and state it in physical terms: weighty, nimble, floaty, chaotic, precise, sticky or momentum-driven. Then tune acceleration, braking, steering response, drift initiation, air control, collision response and recovery time to support that feel.

Track geometry should expose the handling. In the WipEout development account, Burcombe said he was more concerned with “the length of straight, steepness of elevation, frequency of undulations and the tightness or camber of chicanes and corners” than with trackside detail. That order matters: if the vehicle’s movement is not enjoyable on a gray track, scenery will not rescue it.

Dangerous Driving provides a complementary example. Technical director Phil Maguire described sweeping corners and hairpins designed to show off drifting, with roads tuned to the cars rather than treating the road network as fixed scenery. A drift-focused vehicle needs corners that offer an entry, a controllable slide and a meaningful exit—not a random sequence of ninety-degree turns.

Build a handling brief

  • Entry: How does the car approach a corner, and what tells the player when to brake?
  • Rotation: Does steering alone turn the vehicle, or must the player brake, drift or use an ability?
  • Exit: Is the reward a speed burst, a charged resource, a safer line or a positional advantage?
  • Recovery: After a mistake, can the player regain control quickly enough to keep learning?
  • Contact: Do collisions communicate weight, damage and cause clearly?

Prototype these questions with placeholder art. Ask players what they think the vehicle can do before teaching them the intended technique. Confusion is a handling or communication problem, not a lore problem.

4. Build one teaching track

Sketch a short course and label its beats before creating a full championship. The first section teaches the main verb; the middle section introduces a risk or rival interaction; the final section combines skills and tests mastery.

  1. Safe introduction: Give the player a readable straight and a forgiving corner to learn steering, braking or drifting.
  2. First commitment: Present two lines or a resource choice so the player understands that speed has a cost.
  3. Escalation: Add a hazard, opponent behavior or tighter geometry that requires the core skill under pressure.
  4. Expression: Offer a shortcut, ability window or overtaking opportunity for players who have mastered the basics.
  5. Final test: Combine the earlier elements in a visible, fair sequence before the finish.

Mark the intended racing line, braking references, sightlines and restart points. A shortcut should be legible before it is attempted, and its reward should justify its risk. Hazards need a readable cause and recovery path; surprise is useful only when players can learn from it.

5. Give every borrowed franchise element a mechanical job

Characters, locations, powers and conflicts should alter an event, route, risk or progression. A character might change handling rather than merely supply a portrait. A location might create weather, elevation or traffic rules that change the line. A signature power might become a limited-use ability with a clear charge and counterplay. A story conflict might explain why racers are competing under unusual rules.

Borrowed element Mechanical translation Check
Character archetype Distinct acceleration, grip, mass or ability timing Can the difference be felt without reading a biography?
Iconic location Route split, surface type, hazard pattern or elevation profile Would the course play differently in another setting?
Signature power Limited-use boost, defense, transformation or route opener Does using it create a decision rather than a spectacle?
Central conflict Event objective, rival behavior, team rule or progression gate Does the conflict change what happens on track?

Remove elements that only decorate menus unless recognition itself is the explicit goal. A familiar face that does not affect play can still be useful for marketing or story, but it should not consume design complexity that the race needs.

6. Decide how opponents behave

Choose whether rivals are adversaries to attack, pacers to chase, hazards to avoid, teammates to support, or a deliberate mixture. Make that role legible through behavior and interface cues.

The Dangerous Driving team described a difficult balance: artificial opponents had to race competitively while staying close enough for battles to remain possible. That tension should be designed, not hidden behind unexplained rubber-banding. Define when an opponent defends, attacks, takes a shortcut, makes a mistake or yields space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Competitive but fair: Rivals may be fast, but their speed should come from visible lines and rules.
  • Readable intent: Show target markers, braking behavior, attack telegraphs or audio cues.
  • Recoverable errors: A mistake should cost time or position without making the rest of the event pointless.
  • Consistent escalation: Harder events can improve lines, reaction time or aggression, but should not silently change physics.

Test races without HUD explanations. If players cannot tell why they were passed or hit, improve opponent signaling before adding more abilities.

7. Make variety change decisions, not names

Variety is valuable when a rule changes route choice, resource use, timing or risk. Three Fields Entertainment’s interview about Dangerous Driving describes repeated play and iteration while settling on modes, as well as persistent wrecks that could become obstacles on later laps. That feature created changing consequences but also introduced performance demands, demonstrating that every systemic idea has a technical cost.

Questions for each proposed mode

  • What new decision appears that the primary race does not require?
  • Which existing skill remains relevant?
  • What is the clearest way to win, and can players understand it during play?
  • What happens after a mistake—restart, recovery, resource loss or a changed route?
  • Can the mode reuse enough vehicles and track technology to fit the project’s scope?

If the answers are “none,” “the same,” and “it looks different,” cut the mode or redesign its rule.

8. Connect world, story and presentation to the race

Story should explain why the event exists and why its rules matter without interrupting the driving rhythm. A coherent world can support action when locations, characters and conflicts reinforce what the player is doing. Naughty Dog’s postmortem on an ambitious seamless world also shows the production risk: detailed environments and long schedules create debugging and design-change costs that are difficult to predict.

For a series with a strong visual or cultural identity, coordinate presentation across disciplines. An EA interview about Need for Speed Unbound describes gameplay design work connecting art, audio, UI, UX, engineering and design, alongside consultation with Professor H. Samy Alim on hip-hop culture. The practical point is to involve relevant expertise early so the visual language, sound and mechanics communicate the same concept rather than competing for attention.

Keep story beats race-sized

  • Use a short pre-event objective to establish the immediate stakes.
  • Let the track or rules reveal the conflict while the player is driving.
  • Deliver consequences at the finish, garage or map screen.
  • Avoid cutscenes that explain mechanics the player could learn through play.

9. Scope around proof, not feature count

Build the smallest prototype that can prove the distinctive loop: one vehicle, one representative course, one event rule and a clear restart. Use gray-box geometry and placeholder effects. Do not build a roster, open world or campaign before you know whether the core turn is enjoyable.

An Unreal Engine interview about NASCAR 21: Ignition describes using an established engine foundation while concentrating effort on differentiating systems such as physics, artificial intelligence and multiplayer, supported by deeper understanding of NASCAR competition. The scope lesson is to spend your identity budget on the systems players will feel, rather than rebuilding generic foundations without a reason.

Prototype milestones

  1. Feel test: Drive one lap with no opponents. Confirm steering, braking, drifting, camera and recovery are understandable.
  2. Decision test: Add one shortcut, resource or ability. Check whether players choose deliberately rather than press it whenever available.
  3. Conflict test: Add one rival or hazard. Confirm that contact and consequences are readable.
  4. Replay test: Have players restart voluntarily. Look for a desire to improve a line, timing or strategy.
  5. Scope test: Estimate the work required to create three more courses and one additional mode using the same systems.

Long-range schedules cannot predict every debugging task or design change. Let evidence from the prototype determine whether the concept deserves more content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Compare competing concepts with a shared scorecard

When a team has several pitches, score them against identical questions instead of arguing from personal taste. The following axes are a practical synthesis, not an industry-standard measurement.

Axis Question Evidence to seek
Series identity Can a player explain why this belongs to the source series? A one-sentence explanation after a short play session
Core feel Does handling produce the intended fantasy quickly? Player descriptions of weight, speed and control
Mechanical connection Do series abilities, characters or conflicts affect racing decisions? Choices that change lines, resources or outcomes
Track fit Do course shapes support the promised movement? Sections that teach, test and reward the core verb
Readability and fairness Can players understand hazards, rival behavior and mistakes? Accurate explanations of wins, losses and collisions
Variety Do extra modes change decisions? Distinct objectives, pressures or consequences
Scope Can a small prototype prove the idea? One playable loop built with placeholder assets

For accessibility, support a novice’s basic enjoyment while leaving room for experienced players to improve. Steve Lycett wrote in Game Developer on August 27, 2024 that racing games span pick-up-and-play audiences and progression-focused players. The right balance depends on your intended audience and must be checked in play.

11. Use a short worksheet before production

  1. Series promise: “Players feel _____ when they _____.”
  2. Primary verbs: List no more than three actions that deliver that feeling.
  3. Race loop: Describe what happens during a typical lap in three sentences.
  4. Signature mechanic: State the resource, ability or rule that makes this adaptation distinct.
  5. Teaching track: Name the first lesson, first risk and final mastery test.
  6. Opponent role: Define whether rivals attack, pace, evade, cooperate or obstruct.
  7. Identity jobs: Assign a mechanical function to each borrowed character, location and power.
  8. Prototype boundary: Specify one vehicle, one course, one event rule and one success metric.
  9. Cut list: Identify features that can disappear without damaging the promise.

Play the prototype with the series name and art temporarily hidden. If players still describe the intended fantasy, the mechanics are carrying their share of the identity. Reveal the franchise elements afterward and ask which ones strengthened recognition and which merely added noise.

12. Understand the market signal without overreading it

Steve Lycett reported that SteamDB counted 68 racing or driving games released in 2014 and 538 in 2023. These are release counts, not sales, player numbers or evidence that a particular concept will succeed. They do show why a new adaptation needs a clear promise and a memorable feel: a familiar license alone does not distinguish the driving experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use that figure as a reason to sharpen the concept, not as a forecast. Your strongest evidence will come from players voluntarily restarting the prototype, explaining their decisions and improving their lines.

What “fun” should mean in the final concept

A fun racing adaptation gives players a clear fantasy, responsive control, meaningful risk and understandable consequences. The source series supplies identity, but the racing format supplies the test: every borrowed idea must survive contact with steering, speed, opponents and track geometry. Start small, tune the feel, and expand only when the prototype proves that players want to take another lap.
