You can use a compatible iPad as a second display for a Mac without buying an app or cable: Apple’s built-in Sidecar feature can extend or mirror the Mac desktop. It is not a universal trick for every older iPad, and Sidecar does not natively turn an iPad into a Windows PC monitor. Check the model and software requirements first.
Check whether your Mac and iPad support Sidecar
Apple’s Sidecar guide says the feature works with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later and these Mac models: a MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later, a 27-inch Retina 5K iMac introduced in late 2015, or other Mac models introduced in 2016 or later. The iPad must run iPadOS 13 or later and be an iPad Pro, iPad (6th generation or later), iPad mini (5th generation or later), or iPad Air (3rd generation or later). Apple’s compatibility and setup guide has the current model details.

Both devices also need to be signed in to the same Apple Account, with two-factor authentication enabled. “Old iPad” alone is not enough to establish compatibility: identify its model and software version in Settings before troubleshooting a connection.

Connect the iPad by USB or wirelessly
USB: direct connection and charging
- Connect the iPad to the Mac with its USB charge cable. The cable that came with the iPad is the natural first choice; buying a new cable is not a Sidecar requirement.
- If the iPad asks whether to trust the Mac, choose Trust and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Open the Mac’s display settings and select the iPad, following the version-specific path below.
A wired connection is useful when you want the iPad to stay charged while serving as a display. Apple says Sidecar can also work wirelessly.

Wireless: check the connection conditions
For wireless Sidecar, keep the devices within 10 meters (30 feet), Apple’s stated proximity limit. Turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices. The iPad must not be sharing its cellular connection, and the Mac must not be sharing its internet connection. Then open the Mac’s display settings and select the iPad. Apple lists these wireless requirements.
Choose the iPad in macOS and extend the desktop
- On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, then select the iPad.
- On macOS Monterey, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Displays > Display Settings. On earlier supported macOS versions, use the Sidecar settings pane.
- To extend the desktop, move a Mac window to the iPad display. To mirror the Mac instead, use the Screen Mirroring menu.
Sidecar shows Mac windows on the iPad; it does not make the iPad’s own apps part of the extended Mac desktop. If what you want is to use iPad apps while sharing a Mac keyboard, mouse, or trackpad between devices, Apple’s feature for that is Universal Control, not Sidecar.

What you can do from the iPad
A keyboard connected to either device can type into Mac apps shown through Sidecar. The Mac’s connected mouse or trackpad can point and click. With Apple Pencil, you can point, select, draw, edit photos, and mark up documents. Sidecar is not simply a conventional touch monitor: touch interaction depends on the operating-system version, so check Apple’s feature notes rather than assuming every touchscreen gesture will work.

If either device misses Apple’s requirements, or the same-Apple-Account condition is a blocker, third-party options may be worth checking. Their compatibility and pricing can change, so verify current vendor documentation and whether you can install the required desktop software before choosing one.

- OpenDisplay: The project’s first-party documentation describes a free, open-source Mac option with USB or Wi-Fi and support for macOS 14 or later and iPadOS 15 or later. The project describes true display extension; confirm its live requirements and implementation details before relying on it.
- Luna Display: Its App Store listing describes an iPad receiver for Mac and Windows hosts. It lists macOS 10.13 or later, Windows 10 64-bit build 1809 or later, and iOS 12.1 or later on the secondary iPad. This is a software-plus-hardware route; the current hardware price is not established here.
- Duet Display: The vendor’s help article on switching from mirror to extend mode explains that setting. Check current Duet documentation for supported devices and pricing; the requirements and price for every older computer or iPad are not established here.
For a Windows PC, Sidecar is not the native answer. Luna’s listing includes Windows hosts, but check the current device requirements, hardware needs, and price before committing. Do not assume a Mac app or setup path will work on Windows.

If you already own a compatible Mac and iPad, Sidecar itself is built in, and the included USB charge cable can connect the devices. A stand can make the iPad easier to position at a desk, but it is optional rather than part of the connection requirement.
