Start by verifying the memory and CPU limits your deployed JVM actually detects. Then set a heap ceiling that leaves measured room for memory outside the heap, establish a G1 baseline, and change settings only when representative workload measurements show a problem. Consider ZGC when low latency is a primary requirement—not as an automatic upgrade. The right settings depend on the JDK build, container platform and limits, and application workload.
What should you check before changing GC settings?
Record the JDK vendor and build, the collector in use, the container’s memory and CPU limits, and whether other processes share the container. JVM ergonomics and available options can differ across runtime builds and releases, so check the exact runtime deployed rather than copying a setting from a different Java version.
On Linux, OpenJDK container support can detect the resources available to a Java process. Add -Xlog:os+container=trace to the JVM startup options to inspect what the runtime detects, then compare that output with the container’s configured limits. The OpenJDK Java launcher documentation describes this logging option and container support. The documented behavior and defaults on the moving OpenJDK master branch should not be assumed to match every vendor build.
If the JVM does not recognize its limits as expected, resolve that mismatch before tuning GC. A heap sized on the assumption that the JVM sees the container limit can behave very differently if it instead bases its ergonomics on host resources.

How much memory should you give the Java heap?
-Xmx and -XX:MaxRAMPercentage constrain the Java heap; neither sets a safe total for all memory used by the process. The container budget also has to cover memory outside the heap, including metaspace, direct buffers and thread stacks, as well as any other process in the container. Reserve headroom based on observed use under representative load: the available documentation does not establish one safe heap percentage for every application.
| Approach | What it controls | When it may fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
-Xmx |
A fixed maximum Java heap size. | When you want an explicit, predictable heap ceiling. | Choose the value within the container’s total memory budget, leaving room for measured non-heap use and co-located processes. Oracle notes that fixed -Xms and -Xmx values can improve predictability, but this does not make them right for every memory-constrained workload; see its Java SE 21 ergonomics guide. |
-XX:MaxRAMPercentage |
A maximum heap expressed as a percentage of memory available to the JVM. | When a percentage-based heap ceiling is useful and resource detection has been checked. | The current OpenJDK launcher documentation on master states a default of 25 percent. Confirm the default and behavior for the deployed JDK vendor and release; do not apply that figure universally. See the OpenJDK Java launcher documentation. |
Percentage-based sizing does not eliminate the need for headroom: it only sizes the heap relative to the memory available to the JVM. A fixed heap ceiling makes that ceiling explicit, but it still does not account for every source of process or container memory use. Oracle discusses factors that affect GC performance, including memory sizing, in its Java SE 27 guide.

- Chilled Freshness: Ice-chilled base keeps food cool for hours; condiment containers with lids lock in freshness and prevent spills, ideal for a home salad bar or party setup.
- Complete Kit: Includes 5 removable trays, 5 lids, 5 spoons, and 2 tongs—everything needed for a fully stocked condiment caddy and taco bar serving set.
- Compact Dimensions: Each compartment measures 6.3" × 2.95" × 2.95", with a total base size of 16.73" × 13.78" × 7.09"; detachable design for easy hand-washing and space-saving storage.
Why begin with G1 defaults?
For a general-purpose starting point, Oracle recommends using G1 with its default settings, then considering a different pause-time goal or a maximum heap set with -Xmx if needed. That is a baseline, not a guarantee that G1 will meet every service objective. See the Oracle GC tuning guide, Release 21.
Oracle’s Java SE 26 G1 guide documents -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 as an ergonomic pause-time target. It is not a promise that every observed pause will be 200 milliseconds or less. G1 adjusts heap use in response to behavior, so evaluate the setting against measured pauses and application performance rather than treating it as an SLA. The relevant details are in the Oracle Java SE 26 G1 guide.

How to tune GC using workload measurements
- Capture a baseline. Run the application under representative load with G1 defaults. Record pause distributions, throughput, heap occupancy and allocation behavior, process or container memory use, and any out-of-memory (OOM) events or container OOM kills.
- Check resource detection. Use
-Xlog:os+container=traceon OpenJDK/Linux and compare the JVM’s detected resources with the configured container limits. Investigate a mismatch before interpreting heap behavior. - Set the heap ceiling. Pick
-Xmxfor an explicit maximum or-XX:MaxRAMPercentagefor percentage-based sizing. Use observed non-heap consumption and the total container budget to preserve headroom; do not infer a safe percentage from the heap setting alone. - Compare results against the service objective. If G1 misses a measured pause objective, inspect the pauses and workload behavior before changing a control. Change one relevant setting at a time, then rerun the same representative workload and compare pauses, throughput, memory use, and OOM behavior.
- Inspect phase detail when needed. For G1 phase-level diagnostics, Oracle documents
-Xlog:gc+phases=debugin its Java SE 26 G1 guide. Use the resulting detail alongside service-level measurements; a GC log alone does not show whether the application meets its latency or throughput needs. - Keep the outcome reproducible. Record the selected settings with the JDK vendor and build, workload, container limits, and observed results. Revisit the configuration when the runtime, limits, or workload changes.
When is ZGC worth comparing?
Consider ZGC when low latency is a primary requirement and the deployed JDK provides it. Oracle’s Java SE 21 documentation positions ZGC as a low-latency collector and identifies -Xmx as its main tuning control. Those points do not establish that ZGC will outperform G1 for every service. Compare both collectors using the same application workload and memory budget, measuring latency, throughput, and memory use. See the Oracle ZGC guide.
Check the exact JDK documentation for collector availability and configuration syntax before changing startup options. The official references here cover different Java SE releases—21, 26, and 27—and the OpenJDK launcher page tracks a moving branch, so a documented setting or default is not automatically identical across releases and vendors.
