What is a Tumblr boop?
A boop is a lightweight cat-themed interaction attached to a temporary Tumblr event. It is separate from a like, reblog, reply, follow, or message. It is also unrelated to Blaze, Tumblr’s paid post-promotion feature: booping does not promote a post to an advertising audience.
When an event is active, boops normally register as activity for the recipient. Participation is generally opt-in, so you may not see a control for every account.

- Choose Start or the event’s opt-in control.
- Return to the dashboard and look for Boop controls beside participating users.
Historical community instructions describe opting in as enabling both sending and receiving. A missing meter means there may be no active event, not that you need to keep reinstalling the app.

How to boop someone on Tumblr
From the dashboard
- Browse your dashboard until you find a post from the person.
- Look beside the username for Boop.
- Click or tap it once for a normal boop.
The control may be absent when you or the other user has not opted in, when the event is unavailable, or when that account is not eligible.
From someone’s blog
- Open the person’s Tumblr blog.
- Find the cat-paw or Boop control near the blog controls.
- Click or tap it once.
The paw route can be easier than finding a dashboard post, but it follows the same participation and event-availability rules.
Desktop and mobile differences
On desktop, historical versions exposed the Boop control beside a username and the paw control on a blog. Hovering over or holding the paw was associated with special animations. In the mobile app, tap the equivalent control; update the app if an officially active event is missing from an otherwise eligible account. User reports indicate that special-boop gestures and meter details have differed between web and mobile, so do not rely on a fixed gesture or timing from an older guide.
How to send a Super Boop or Evil Boop
During the 2024-era interface, a normal click or tap sent a regular boop. Special boops were triggered by keeping the paw control hovered over or held while it animated, then activating it when the special animation appeared. Community reports disagree about how many animation cycles are required, particularly on mobile.

- Super Boop: hover over or hold the paw until the first special animation appears, then activate it.
- Evil Boop: continue watching or holding through additional animation cycles, then activate it when the evil or mischievous state appears.
These names and gestures are historical event behavior, not a guarantee for every future rerun. Watch the control’s animation instead of counting seconds, and remember that a mobile tap-and-hold may not behave like a desktop hover.
Can you boop yourself or the Tumblr cat?
Historical event reports describe self-boops from your own blog or posts. They also describe a cat interaction becoming available after enough event activity, sometimes through a notification. These were event-specific extras; Tumblr’s current documentation does not promise that they are available whenever boops return.

Do not assume these badges are currently earnable, that a rerun will preserve the same thresholds, or that old badges will be reissued. Wait for an official event announcement.

Tumblr Staff’s April 2024 Boop Breakdown reported these historical totals:

Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the event exists: refresh the dashboard and look for the boop-o-meter and Start control. If neither appears anywhere, the event may be over or unavailable.
- Opt in: sending may remain disabled until you start the event.
- Check the recipient: the other user may not have opted in, or may be ineligible.
- Update the client: install the latest Tumblr app version, then fully close and reopen it.
- Try both routes: test the dashboard button and the paw control on the user’s blog.
- Consider account or blog limits: historical reports mention sideblog and account-type restrictions, but these are not established as permanent Tumblr rules.
- Check for an outage: consult Tumblr Support and official status or Changes announcements.
If there is no meter on either web or mobile after refreshing and updating, repeatedly reinstalling the app is unlikely to create a feature Tumblr has not enabled.
What if I can receive but not send?
Receiving and sending can be affected by different eligibility checks. Confirm that you completed opt-in, try your primary blog rather than a sideblog, and test a recipient who is visibly participating. Sideblog limitations were reported by users during historical events, but Tumblr has not documented them as a universal current rule.

What if a boop does not appear in Activity?
- Check that the button visibly completed its animation or confirmation.
- Refresh the page or reopen the app.
- Allow for delayed or filtered activity notifications.
- Check whether you sent the interaction to yourself or the event cat rather than another user.
- Remember that historical reports describe normal boops stacking, while special boops could display differently.
Tumblr has not promised that every boop creates a separate, permanently visible activity entry.
What can you do when boops are unavailable?
If your goal is simply to acknowledge someone, use a like, reblog, reply, follow, or message where available. Those actions do not earn historical boop badges, but they work without waiting for a limited-time boop event.
