How to try a Nintendo Switch game’s free demo and download the full game

You can test a Nintendo Switch title without paying when its Nintendo eShop listing includes a demo. Find the game in Nintendo’s current games-with-free-demos catalogue or search for it in eShop, open the product page, and select the offered demo download. If you decide to keep playing, return to that page, buy the full digital game, and let the console download it to an account with enough storage.

The exact titles, button labels, trial windows, payment methods, and availability change by game and region. Treat the individual eShop listing as the final authority rather than assuming every Switch game has a free demo.

The quickest route from a free test to the full game

For a normal demo, the process is entirely title-dependent: Nintendo offers demos for some games, not for the whole catalog. In the United States, the easiest starting point is Nintendo’s Games with free demos page. You can also search directly in Nintendo eShop on the Switch. The product page will show whether a demo is available and which download control to use.

  1. Connect the Switch to the internet and open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
  2. Search for the game, or choose a title from Nintendo’s current demo catalogue.
  3. Open the game’s product page and look for a demo download option.
  4. Download and launch the demo from the HOME Menu.
  5. If you want the complete game, return to the same listing and select the full-game purchase option.

A listing that says Game Trial is a different offer. Read the distinction below before downloading, because a Game Trial is the complete game for a limited period and follows Nintendo Switch Online membership rules in the covered Americas flow.

How to check whether a particular game has a demo

Use Nintendo’s changing catalogue

Nintendo’s US catalogue is a convenient filtered list of games that currently advertise free demos. It is not a permanent directory or a promise that a title will remain available. A game can disappear from the page, have its offer changed, or show different availability in another country. Open the title from the catalogue and verify the offer on its live eShop listing before planning a download.

Search in Nintendo eShop

On the Switch, open Nintendo eShop, choose the search function, and enter the game’s name. Select the matching result rather than a similarly named add-on, bundle, soundtrack, or downloadable content item. On the product page, inspect the available actions. If a demo exists, the page presents a demo download control; if it does not, you will see only the purchase or other options that apply to that listing. Nintendo’s official instructions confirm the availability check but caution that exact button wording for an initial download can vary.

Confirm the region and edition

Check that the listing belongs to the Nintendo Account’s eShop region and that it is the edition you intend to try. The US catalogue and Nintendo’s Americas support pages do not establish identical screens or offers worldwide. A demo shown on a US page may have a different release status, name, or availability in another country. When in doubt, use the eShop attached to your own account and read the local product page.

Download and start the standard demo

  1. Open eShop. Select the Nintendo eShop icon from the Switch HOME Menu and sign in with the Nintendo Account you use for that console.
  2. Open the game listing. Search by title or select the game from the current free-demo catalogue. Read the listing carefully so you do not select a similarly named paid edition.
  3. Choose the demo download. Select the control offered on the product page. Nintendo confirms that the wording can differ between listings, so follow the action that explicitly identifies the free demo.
  4. Wait for the download. The demo appears on the HOME Menu when the download completes. If the Switch is busy with another download, pause or finish that item first so the demo can proceed.
  5. Launch and evaluate it. Open the new icon and check what the particular demo includes. A demo’s playable content, limits, and end point are set by its publisher; Nintendo’s catalogue does not promise one universal format or duration.

Downloading a standard demo does not require an eShop Card. The free download and the later purchase are separate actions, so you can remove the demo without buying the full game.

Demo or Game Trial? The wording matters

Nintendo uses two different kinds of try-before-you-buy offers. A normal demo is a limited version supplied for that title. A Game Trial is a downloadable full version made available for a limited period to Nintendo Switch Online members. Nintendo Support defines it as: “A Game Trial is a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” The distinction is especially important in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where Nintendo’s documented download flow requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Question Standard demo Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial
What can you play? A demo experience chosen by the game’s publisher; the exact content is title-specific. The full game during the trial window.
How long does access last? Terms are set by the individual demo; a universal duration is not stated. Access is time-limited, with the dates determined by the specific trial.
Is Nintendo Switch Online required? The standard-demo instructions do not state a membership requirement. Nintendo’s US, Canadian, and Mexican FAQ flow requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to download.
Where do you find it? The game’s eShop listing or Nintendo’s current free-demo catalogue. The relevant Game Trial promotion and the game’s eShop listing, subject to regional availability.
What happens when the offer changes? The demo can be removed or altered by the publisher; check the live listing. The trial ends when its stated window closes, and availability can change.

If the product page says Game Trial rather than Demo, check the end date and membership status before downloading. Do not assume that a Game Trial remains playable indefinitely or that a standard demo contains the entire game.

Buy the full digital game after trying it

Return to the same product page

After you finish the demo, open Nintendo eShop again and locate the game’s original listing. Select the full-game purchase option, review the edition and price, and complete the checkout prompts. The demo is not an automatic upgrade: buying the complete game is a separate transaction. If several editions appear, read what each contains before confirming.

Have the required account and system ready

Nintendo says a digital purchase download requires all of the following:

  • A Nintendo Account that can access the relevant eShop.
  • A Nintendo Switch system.
  • An internet connection.
  • Access to Nintendo eShop.
  • Enough available memory on the console or its supported storage for that game.

The amount of space is different for every title. Check the game’s eShop listing for its stated storage requirement instead of relying on a generic number. If the console reports insufficient space, free room before starting the download or use storage supported by your Switch model.

Complete checkout without confusing the demo with ownership

Review the account name shown during checkout and make sure it is the account that should own the game. Nintendo ties a digital purchase to the Nintendo Account that bought it. A demo can be downloaded by itself, but the full digital license is created only after the purchase succeeds. Keep the purchase confirmation available if you later need to verify which account was used.

Payment options and eShop Cards

If the account’s available balance covers the price, no additional funding step is needed. If it does not, Nintendo lists an eShop Card as one optional way to add funds before buying a digital game. Card and payment availability differs by country, so use an eShop Card intended for your own eShop region and follow the local redemption instructions. An eShop Card is not required to download or play a free demo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because payment methods and labels can change, read the checkout screen for the account’s country rather than assuming that a method offered in the United States is offered everywhere. If the purchase cannot be completed, resolve the payment or account issue first; repeatedly downloading the demo will not create a full-game license.

What happens after you buy

Purchases made on the Switch

For a released digital game purchased through Nintendo eShop, the download can begin after the transaction is completed. Keep the console connected to the internet and leave enough memory available. You can monitor progress from the HOME Menu and launch the game when the download finishes.

Purchases made through Nintendo.com

Nintendo’s digital-purchase guidance says the console must be powered on or in sleep mode, with an active internet connection, for a Nintendo.com purchase to download. If the Switch is fully powered off or offline, the purchase can remain pending until those conditions are restored. Wake the console, reconnect it, and allow the download to start before troubleshooting further.

Installing alongside the demo

The full game and its demo may appear as separate HOME Menu icons. Keep the demo if you want it, or delete it to reclaim its space after confirming that the full game launches. Deleting a demo does not cancel a purchase of the full game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redownload a demo you removed

If you deleted a demo and want to try it again, open Nintendo eShop and search for the title. Nintendo says most demos can be found in eShop and downloaded again. Select the available demo option on the listing and start the download. “Most” does not mean every historical demo remains available: a publisher can withdraw an offer, and a listing can change by country. If the demo no longer appears, check the current product page and local availability rather than assuming the console is malfunctioning.

Troubleshoot the most common problems

The listing does not show a demo

  • Confirm that you opened the exact game and edition, not an add-on or bundle.
  • Search the title directly in the eShop connected to your account’s country.
  • Compare the result with Nintendo’s current US demo catalogue if you are using a US account.
  • Remember that catalogue entries and demo offers are changeable; a title may no longer have an active demo.

If the product page has no demo control, there is no supported way to force a separate demo download from that listing.

A deleted demo cannot be found again

Search the game in eShop and open its current listing. Nintendo’s redownload guidance says most demos can be downloaded again, but a withdrawn or region-limited offer will not reappear. Verify that you are signed in to the same eShop region in which the demo was originally available.

  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

The game still shows a price after purchase

Nintendo says a price can appear when the eShop is being viewed with a different Nintendo Account from the one that bought the game. Sign out or switch to the purchasing account, then revisit the listing. Digital ownership belongs to that account, so another account on the same console should not be expected to download the game at no cost. See Nintendo’s explanation of previously purchased digital content showing a download cost for the account-specific check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The purchase completed but the game is not visible

First confirm the account used at checkout and check the HOME Menu for an icon that is still downloading. If the title is absent, use Nintendo’s Digital Content is Missing support guide to check purchase and redownload status. Do not buy the game a second time until you have verified the original transaction and account.

The download will not start or stops partway through

  • Test the Switch’s internet connection and reconnect to the network if necessary.
  • Check available console memory against the requirement shown on the game’s product page.
  • For a Nintendo.com purchase, leave the console on or in sleep mode with internet active.
  • Pause other downloads if the connection or storage is being used by another item.

Nintendo identifies an internet connection and sufficient memory as requirements for digital game downloads. If both are available and the download still fails, use the relevant Nintendo support article rather than repeatedly purchasing the title.

Region, membership, and changing offers

The instructions above are written for a US-facing reader because Nintendo’s free-demo catalogue is US-specific and the Game Trial FAQ describes an Americas flow. Nintendo’s purchase guidance covers the Americas, while payment methods and eShop availability vary by country. Outside the United States, open the eShop associated with your Nintendo Account and rely on that local listing for the demo, price, currency, payment methods, and any Game Trial dates.

Membership status also matters only when the listing is a Game Trial governed by Nintendo Switch Online rules. Do not buy a membership merely to download a standard demo when the listing offers an ordinary free demo; the standard-demo instructions do not state that requirement. Conversely, do not treat a Game Trial as an unrestricted demo, because its full-game access ends with the advertised trial period.

Before you press Download: a practical checklist

  • Is the exact game listing offering a standard demo, a Game Trial, or neither?
  • Are you viewing the eShop for the correct country and Nintendo Account?
  • If it is a Game Trial, is the required Nintendo Switch Online membership active and is the trial window still open?
  • Does the console have an internet connection and enough available memory?
  • For a purchase, are you signed in to the account that should own the digital game?
  • If you are paying with an eShop Card, is it valid for your account’s region?
  • If buying through Nintendo.com, will the Switch be on or in sleep mode with internet active so the download can begin?

Once those checks pass, the normal path is simple: download the available demo, decide whether it meets your needs, then buy the full game from the same eShop listing and let Nintendo deliver the digital download to the purchasing account.
