Sometimes you can continue a Steam demo save in the full game, but there is no universal transfer rule. The developer must support the handoff, and the steps can differ by game. Check the title’s official instructions before uninstalling the demo or creating a full-game save.
Can I transfer my demo save to the full game?
Only if that game supports it. Steamworks lets developers configure shared cloud storage between a demo’s app ID and the full game’s app ID; Valve says this setup is most commonly used to share saved games between a demo and a full game. It is a developer choice, not an automatic Steam feature. Steamworks’ Steam Cloud documentation explains the configuration.

Steam Cloud support by itself does not prove that a particular demo save will work in the full game. Developers choose which files to sync, and some games keep saves only on the device. Even when both versions use Cloud, the full game must be able to read the demo’s save.

How to check before you buy or uninstall
- Check the Steam Store page. Look for the Steam Cloud indicator, but treat it only as evidence that the game uses Cloud—not proof that demo saves carry over.
- Search the game’s official FAQ or support page. Look for phrases such as “demo save,” “transfer,” and “carry over.” Prefer instructions from the developer or publisher over general advice about copying save files.
- Keep the demo and its save intact. Don’t uninstall the demo or delete local data until you know the game’s transfer method. Some games rely on local-only data, which can be lost when the game is removed.
- If the game uses Steam Cloud, let it sync while online. Check for a sync warning before switching devices or uninstalling. Steam says offline play can delay syncing and contribute to conflicts.

What to do after buying the full game
- Install the full game and read its official transfer instructions before launching it.
- Follow the game’s specific method. It may detect the demo save automatically, require an explicit import, or depend on a Cloud setting. Some games do not support transfer at all.
- If the instructions say an existing full-game save blocks the transfer, do not create one first. Follow the publisher’s directions before starting a new game.
Don’t assume that copying files between folders is the right fix. The shared-cloud setup is controlled by the developer, and file locations or import steps vary by title.

Stop before deleting or replacing more files. Check these points in order:

- Confirm the demo save still exists on the device where you played. If it was local-only and the demo was uninstalled, it may no longer be available.
- Check the official transfer rules. The game may not support carryover, or it may require a particular import step or a clean full-game save slot.
- Check Cloud status for both versions if the publisher says Cloud is involved. Make sure the demo had time to sync and look for any conflict notice.
- Resolve a Cloud conflict carefully. Compare the timestamps and progress in the available versions before choosing one; selecting the wrong copy can replace the save you want.
- Contact the game’s publisher or developer for title-specific recovery steps. Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts on a player’s behalf.

The examples show why checking the actual title’s official instructions matters: one game may load a demo save, another may impose conditions, and another may prohibit transfer.
