If OBS reports network-dropped frames while streaming to YouTube, first lower the stream to a bitrate your connection can sustain, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and isolate software, equipment, and ingest settings. The dropped-frame counter does not by itself prove packet loss on your home broadband: it indicates an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or that the selected bitrate cannot be sustained.
Confirm the problem is network drops
In OBS, open View > Docks > Stats and check which counter is rising. Network-dropped frames point to a connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot keep up with. Render lag and encoding lag are different symptoms: they point toward scene rendering or encoder workload rather than network delivery. Use the OBS log or Stats dock to distinguish them before changing your network setup. OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server, not proof that the home ISP is at fault (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, 2024-09-30).

Run a repeatable YouTube test
Before changing several settings at once, make a safe test stream and recreate the real stream as closely as possible. YouTube recommends testing with audio and on-screen movement similar to the planned broadcast, then watching stream health and its messages (YouTube Help, live encoder settings and stream health).
- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast if you do not want the test visible to viewers.
- Use the planned scene, audio, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate. An idle scene may not expose a problem that appears during motion or audio.
- Record when drops begin, the encoder bitrate, the selected YouTube ingest/server, and whether the computer is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Note whether other devices are uploading or using the connection heavily, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages alongside OBS Stats.
- Change one factor at a time and repeat the test under similar conditions. A change that improves the result helps narrow the cause; it does not certify every part of the route.
Check bitrate against stable upload capacity
A speed test is a useful starting point, but a single peak result does not show what your connection can sustain during a live stream. Test under realistic household conditions and leave capacity for normal upload variation and other devices. YouTube’s current recommended H.264 ingest bitrates include these values; they are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular broadband route will reliably carry them (YouTube Help, accessed 2026).

OBS suggests lowering the video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal threshold. A connection can still falter below that proportion if upload speed fluctuates, the household is congested, or the route to the ingest server is unstable (OBS Project).
- Reduce the video bitrate in your encoder and run the same test again.
- If network drops ease at the lower bitrate, capacity or stability is a likely contributor. Choose settings that remain stable rather than chasing a high speed-test peak.
- If drops persist at a substantially lower bitrate, continue with wired/Wi-Fi and software comparisons instead of assuming the bitrate was the only cause.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and inspect the home network
If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, test Ethernet in the same conditions. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If an Ethernet cable is needed for the test, confirm that the computer and router have compatible ports and that the cable reaches; the test is diagnostic, not a guaranteed repair. A wired test will not resolve ISP congestion, faulty equipment, or a route or ingest problem.

Restarting the modem and router is a basic connectivity check. Also inspect the cable, network adapter, switches, extenders, and other devices along the path. OBS lists these as potential fault points, but the dropped-frame symptom alone does not show that any one device is faulty. If you are unsure, OBS advises involving your ISP before replacing hardware.

- Ethernet works, Wi-Fi drops: investigate wireless signal, interference, or the access point; keep testing before deciding whether equipment needs attention.
- Both connections drop similarly: the cause may be elsewhere, such as upload capacity, software, equipment shared by both tests, or the route to ingest.
- Only busy household periods cause trouble: repeat with other upload-heavy devices paused, then compare results. This can reveal congestion but does not identify who or what is responsible.
Isolate software and routing
OBS recommends checking VPN software, security software, bundled network utilities that may deprioritize OBS, and outdated network drivers. For each test, change one item at a time, use a repeatable stream, and restore any security protection you temporarily disable.

- VPN: compare a test with the VPN disconnected if your setup and security requirements allow it. A change in drops suggests the VPN path may be relevant, but does not establish the precise fault.
- Security or network utility: review whether software is filtering traffic or applying traffic priorities to OBS. Avoid leaving protective software disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Network driver: check for an appropriate current driver for your network adapter, especially if the problem began after a system or driver change.
- Different ingest or service: OBS documents trying another ingest server and testing another service to help distinguish service-specific behavior. A successful test on another service does not prove the full route to YouTube is healthy.
- Windows network optimizations: OBS’s guide includes optional network optimization/TCP pacing experiments for Windows. Some users report benefit, but these are not guaranteed fixes.
- Dynamic bitrate: OBS can lower bitrate when a connection cannot keep up, which may reduce dropped frames by sacrificing quality. It can help maintain a stream, but it does not fix the underlying instability.
Check RTMPS settings when connection errors point to a protocol problem
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Protocol checks are most relevant when the encoder cannot connect or times out; they are not the default explanation for every intermittent dropped-frame report.
For an RTMPS failure, verify the encoder’s configured protocol URL and host, YouTube’s ingestion host and application path, port 443, TLS connection, and SNI hostname behavior. Google’s RTMPS documentation notes that SSL errors can result from using an RTMP host where RTMPS is expected, the wrong port, or TLS/SNI handling; a timeout can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an RTMPS endpoint (Google, RTMPS ingestion, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC). Copy the current server details from YouTube Studio rather than guessing or reusing an endpoint from another service.

Escalate with useful evidence
If the OBS troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP with specific evidence rather than only reporting “packet loss.” Share test timestamps, stream bitrate and ingest selection, YouTube stream-health messages, results on wired versus Wi-Fi, and whether lowering bitrate changed the drops. OBS notes that an ISP may be able to make changes on its end and that congestion can occur along the route. This makes escalation reasonable, but does not establish ISP fault before investigation.
