How to troubleshoot Xiaomi–iPhone message and file sync problems

“Sync” can mean three different things between a Xiaomi phone and an iPhone: a one-time move to a new iPhone, sending an individual file, or continuously mirroring messages and files. The fix depends on which of those you need. Apple’s Move to iOS is a setup-time migration tool; Xiaomi Share is a short-range file-transfer route on eligible devices; Apple’s iCloud message features synchronize Apple devices, not a Xiaomi phone.

Use the decision table first, then follow the matching troubleshooting branch. Confirm your exact Xiaomi model, Android or HyperOS version, iPhone model, iOS version, country and carrier because support and menu names change.

Identify the type of “sync” problem

Xiaomi describes its own feature this way: “Xiaomi Share is a short-range wireless file transfer feature provided by Xiaomi.” That wording matters: it describes sending files nearby, not continuous cross-platform synchronization.

Move Xiaomi data and message history to a new iPhone

Choose this branch when the iPhone is new or you are willing to start its setup again. Move to iOS runs from the iPhone’s setup flow, rather than as a general-purpose sync service after setup has finished.

Before you start

• Make sure the iPhone has enough free space for the content you selected. A destination that is too small can make an apparently successful transfer incomplete.
• Plug both phones into power, or start with substantial battery remaining. Keep them close together throughout the process.
• Update the Xiaomi phone and the Move to iOS app if updates are offered. Record any content, such as music, books or PDFs, that may need a separate manual transfer.
• Have the iPhone’s setup language, region and network choices ready. A direct USB-C connection can be faster, but only if both specific models have compatible USB-C ports and the cable supports data; check the connectors before buying or using one.

Run the migration

1. Turn on the iPhone and proceed through setup until the screen for transferring apps and data appears. Select the option to transfer from Android (the wording can vary by iOS release).
2. On the Xiaomi phone, open Move to iOS and follow its prompts. Enter the one-time code shown on the iPhone when requested.
3. Join the temporary connection created by the iPhone if the Android app asks. Select the categories and files you want to move, including messages or SMS when offered.
4. Leave both phones powered, nearby and undisturbed. The Xiaomi screen can look finished before the iPhone is done; wait for the iPhone’s progress bar and completion message.
5. Finish iPhone setup only after the iPhone reports completion. Check the relevant apps and storage before deleting anything from the Xiaomi phone.

If the transfer is stuck or incomplete

• Android says it is finished first: do not disconnect. Apple’s process can continue while the Android side appears idle; use the iPhone progress indicator as the completion signal.
• The iPhone runs out of space: cancel if necessary, remove or exclude large items, and retry with a selection that fits. Do not assume that a partial result contains every conversation or folder.
• The connection drops: reconnect both phones to power, keep them close, restart the process and avoid switching away from the transfer screens. If a direct cable is being used, check that it is a data cable and that both ports are compatible.
• Setup has already been completed: Apple distinguishes manual copying from restarting the setup flow. To use Move to iOS, you may need to erase the iPhone and set it up again; back up anything already on the iPhone before doing that. If you do not want to erase it, transfer supported content manually instead.
• Music, books or PDFs are missing: these categories may require manual handling rather than the automated Move to iOS selection. Keep the originals on the Xiaomi phone until you have placed them in the appropriate iPhone apps or storage.

Move to iOS is therefore the appropriate answer to “How do I move SMS from Android to iPhone?” when the target is a new iPhone. It does not create a live feed that keeps the Xiaomi and iPhone message databases synchronized afterward.

Send files with Xiaomi Share

Use this route for a photo, video, folder or document that you want to send now. Xiaomi’s documented cross-platform route requires an eligible Xiaomi device and software. Xiaomi says supported devices upgraded to HyperOS 2 can transfer files bidirectionally with Apple devices through Xiaomi Share, but support is model- and region-dependent.

Requirements checklist

• A Xiaomi phone whose model and current HyperOS software support Xiaomi Share’s Apple-device transfer.
• The Xiaomi Interconnectivity app installed and running on the iPhone.
• Bluetooth enabled on both phones.
• Wi-Fi enabled on both phones, with the phones on the same local network where Xiaomi’s instructions require it for discovery.
• Permissions granted to Xiaomi Share and Xiaomi Interconnectivity, including local-network or nearby-device access when the operating system asks.
• Enough free storage on the receiving phone.
• Both phones close enough for a stable short-range connection, with their screens available to accept the transfer.

Xiaomi to iPhone

1. On the Xiaomi phone, open Gallery or File Manager and select the item or items.
2. Tap Send, choose Xiaomi Share, and wait for nearby devices to appear.
3. Select the iPhone. If prompted, verify that the iPhone is running Xiaomi Interconnectivity and that discovery is enabled.
4. Accept the request on the iPhone and leave both devices nearby until the transfer reports completion.
5. Open the destination in the iPhone’s indicated app or storage location and check that the file opens before removing the original.

iPhone to Xiaomi

1. On the Xiaomi phone, turn on Xiaomi Share and set its visibility so the iPhone can discover it.
2. Open Xiaomi Interconnectivity on the iPhone and choose the file to send.
3. Select the Xiaomi phone, approve the request on the Xiaomi device, and keep both phones within range.
4. Verify the file in the Xiaomi destination folder or app before deleting the iPhone copy.

Fix “iPhone not finding Xiaomi Share”

Discovery failures occur before a file is actually transferred. Work through these checks in order rather than repeatedly tapping Send.

1. Confirm eligibility. Check the Xiaomi model, HyperOS version and region against Xiaomi’s current support information. Xiaomi Share is not guaranteed on every Xiaomi phone, every iPhone or every software build.
2. Open the required app. Xiaomi Interconnectivity must be installed and running on the iPhone. Do not leave it force-closed in the background while testing.
3. Turn on both radios. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both phones. If Xiaomi specifies a same-network condition for the discovery path you are using, connect both phones to the same local network rather than relying on mobile data.
4. Change visibility temporarily. In Xiaomi Share, set device visibility to allow nearby discovery. A hidden or contacts-only setting can prevent the iPhone from appearing.
5. Allow permissions. Accept nearby-device, Bluetooth, local-network, photos or file-access prompts. On the iPhone, review the app’s permissions in Settings; on Xiaomi, review the app permissions in the system’s Apps settings. Menu names differ by software version.
6. Reduce distance and interference. Put the phones next to each other, remove battery-saving restrictions that stop the sharing app, and keep both screens awake while pairing.
7. Restart the path. Turn Xiaomi Share and Xiaomi Interconnectivity off and on, restart both phones, then try one small file. A small successful transfer separates a discovery problem from a large-transfer problem.
8. Update before escalating. Install current system and app updates, then retry. A feature described for HyperOS 2 may not work on an older build or may change after an update.

When a transfer stops partway through

• Check free space on the receiving phone, including space needed for a temporary copy.
• Move the phones closer and keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled; do not switch to a different network during the transfer.
• Restart both phones and retry a single file.
• Split a large batch into smaller groups. Batching does not repair an unsupported device, but it can identify a particular file or reduce the impact of a short interruption.
• Open the destination file after each batch. A transfer notification alone is not proof that every item is intact.

Vendor transfer-speed figures, where shown in Xiaomi’s FAQ, are estimates that depend on the devices and Wi-Fi conditions. They are not a guaranteed or independently measured speed, so judge success by reliable completion rather than a promised rate.

Understand why messages do not “sync” between the phones

Messages can be delivered across platforms without the historical conversation appearing in the other phone’s Messages database. Apple Messages can use iMessage, RCS, or SMS/MMS. The protocol is selected by the devices, software, carrier and region; SMS/MMS availability also depends on the carrier and plan.

New messages are not arriving

1. On the iPhone, open the Messages settings (on recent iOS, Settings > Apps > Messages; older releases may list Messages directly under Settings).
2. Check whether RCS Messaging is offered and enabled in your region and by your carrier. If it is unavailable, the conversation may fall back to SMS/MMS when the carrier supports that service.
3. For an iPhone-to-Xiaomi conversation, confirm the Xiaomi phone has cellular service or the supported data connection required by the protocol. Ask the carrier whether the plan permits RCS and SMS/MMS for that line.
4. Send a short test message and note whether it is delivered as RCS or SMS/MMS. Bubble color by itself does not prove that a message archive is synchronized.
5. If only one contact fails, check that the number is correct and that the conversation has not been blocked or addressed to an obsolete number. If every non-Apple recipient fails, treat carrier, plan or regional support as the primary suspect.

Old conversations are missing on the Xiaomi phone

Neither RCS nor SMS/MMS delivery automatically imports an iPhone’s complete message history into Xiaomi’s Messages app. For a one-time history move to a new iPhone, return to the Move to iOS branch. For an existing iPhone and Xiaomi phone, there is no Apple-documented feature in these materials that continuously mirrors the iPhone archive into Xiaomi’s message database.

Messages appear on one Apple device but not another

Messages in iCloud synchronizes message history between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account with the feature enabled. Text Message Forwarding can show SMS, MMS and RCS on other Apple devices. These are Apple-device features; turning them on does not make a Xiaomi phone a synchronized endpoint. Availability and settings can vary by iOS release, carrier and region.

Why Xiaomi Cloud does not solve iPhone Messages sync

Xiaomi describes Xiaomi Cloud as a way to synchronize Xiaomi-phone apps, data and settings within its ecosystem. The documented capability does not establish integration with Apple’s Messages database. Do not use a Xiaomi Cloud backup as evidence that an iPhone conversation will appear in Xiaomi Messages, or vice versa.

For files that must stay available on both platforms, select a cloud provider that offers current iPhone and Xiaomi apps, sign in to the same account on both phones, and confirm that the folders you need are included. This solves cross-platform file access, not SMS or RCS history synchronization.

Choose the route by need

A practical diagnostic checklist

Before changing settings repeatedly, write down four facts: the exact Xiaomi model and HyperOS or Android version, the iPhone model and iOS version, the country and carrier, and whether you need migration, a file transfer or ongoing message/file availability. Then identify the first point of failure:

• No device appears: investigate eligibility, app installation, visibility, permissions, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and same-network status.
• Device appears but pairing fails: accept the request on the receiving phone, keep both screens active, restart both apps and retry with one small file.
• Pairing succeeds but transfer stops: check storage, distance, radio state, software updates and batch size.
• New texts fail: identify whether the attempt is RCS or SMS/MMS and verify carrier, plan and regional support.
• History is absent: distinguish a one-time Move to iOS migration from an unsupported continuous mirror.
