Start by identifying whether your Framework Laptop 12 uses a 13th Gen Intel Core processor or Intel Core Series 3, then record the operating system, version, BIOS, Wi‑Fi device and driver or kernel. Framework publishes different firmware and Linux requirements for those generations. Once the system is identified, troubleshoot the symptom separately: Wi‑Fi discovery and speed, standby drain, and active-use battery life usually have different causes.
Identify your Laptop 12 generation before changing anything
“Framework Laptop 12” covers more than one hardware platform. The 13th Gen Intel Core model and the Intel Core Series 3 model have separate download pages, firmware, and Linux compatibility requirements. Installing a BIOS package or following a Linux instruction for the wrong generation can leave the original problem unresolved or create a new one.

In Windows, open Settings > System > About and note the processor name, Windows edition and version. You can also press Win, type msinfo32, and record BIOS Version/Date. In Linux, record the distribution and release, kernel version with uname -r, and the processor with lscpu. Note the Wi‑Fi adapter shown by your network settings or by a hardware-information utility.

| Laptop 12 platform | Framework Linux kernel minimum | Firmware guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 13th Gen Intel Core | 6.1 | Use the 13th Gen Intel Core BIOS and driver pages. |
| Intel Core Series 3 | 7.1 | Use the distinct Core Series 3 BIOS and driver pages. |
Framework’s live compatibility guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, gives those minimum kernel versions. A minimum is not a promise that every distribution or desktop environment handles Wi‑Fi and sleep identically; distribution support and power-management defaults still matter.
Classify the symptom before troubleshooting
Use the pattern of the failure to choose the first test. “Wi‑Fi is broken” can mean that no networks appear, the connection repeatedly drops, or the link works but is slow. Sleep drain is measured while the lid is closed or the system is suspended, whereas battery runtime during active use is affected by workload, display brightness, USB devices and power settings.
- No networks appear: check the adapter, driver or kernel support, radio state and antenna installation.
- Wi‑Fi drops or is intermittent: compare another network, inspect signal band and local gateway reachability, then check drivers and antennas.
- Wi‑Fi is connected but slow: identify whether the link is using 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz and test close to the access point.
- The battery falls rapidly while asleep: investigate standby mode, software that prevents sleep, deep-sleep configuration and firmware.
- Battery falls rapidly while you are working: inspect CPU activity, display and USB power use, select an appropriate power profile, and check battery capacity.
Do not order a replacement Wi‑Fi card or battery simply because a symptom is inconvenient. Software, radio conditions, assembly details and power-management settings can produce the same symptoms as a worn component.
Fix Wi‑Fi discovery and connection failures
Install model- and platform-appropriate support
On Windows, install the current Framework driver bundle for your exact Laptop 12 generation. If Windows reports a separate Wi‑Fi driver package, use the package intended for the installed adapter and generation rather than a generic download chosen by model name alone. Restart after installation and check whether networks appear.
On Linux, use a distribution and kernel with good support for the actual Wi‑Fi card. The 13th Gen Intel Core model has a Framework-stated minimum kernel of 6.1; Core Series 3 has a minimum of 7.1. Those figures do not override your distribution’s support matrix. Check the distribution’s current Laptop 12 guidance before changing kernels, firmware packages or boot parameters.
If the adapter is missing entirely, inspect whether it is disabled in software and whether the hardware is detected. A missing interface after an update points first to driver, kernel or firmware compatibility. A missing interface after assembly or repair also warrants a physical inspection.
Inspect the Wi‑Fi antennas after assembly or repair
Framework’s installation guidance calls for secure antenna connections and the Wi‑Fi bracket positioned above the module as specified. Power the laptop down, disconnect the charger and follow the model-specific repair guide before opening the chassis. Check that each antenna connector is seated squarely and that the bracket is installed in the correct position. Do not pry at the tiny connectors or move a cable with the system powered.

A loose antenna can cause weak signal, low throughput and frequent drops even when the operating system shows a normal driver. If the problem began after replacing memory, storage, the display or the Wi‑Fi module, this check has higher priority than buying another card.
Determine which Wi‑Fi band you are using
Connect near the access point and identify the current band. A 2.4 GHz network generally travels farther and passes through walls better, but it has lower maximum throughput and is often more congested. A 5 GHz or 6 GHz link can provide higher throughput at short range, subject to the router, client, channel and regional rules.
In Windows, open the connected network’s properties to view the band where the interface exposes it. For a command-line view, open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run:

netsh wlan show interfaces
Look for the radio type, channel and receive/transmit rates. Test again in the same room as the access point. If performance improves substantially at close range, investigate distance, walls, interference or band steering before treating the laptop as defective.
On Linux, the distribution may provide band and link information through iwconfig, iw, or the interactive wavemon utility. Use the tool available in your distribution and record the frequency, signal level and negotiated rate when the problem occurs.
Test the local gateway separately from the internet
A gateway test tells you whether the laptop can reach the local router. First identify the default gateway. Windows displays it in Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Hardware properties, or you can run ipconfig. Linux commonly shows it with ip route.
Then ping the gateway address, replacing the example with your router’s address:
ping 192.168.1.1
If the gateway does not respond while you are connected, focus on the laptop-to-access-point path: signal, band, antenna, driver, router compatibility or local interference. If the gateway responds consistently but websites fail, the next fault may be the router’s internet connection, DNS or an upstream service rather than the laptop’s wireless link. Repeat the test on another network, such as a phone hotspot, to separate a laptop problem from a particular router.

Standby drain is not the same as short runtime while the laptop is being used. A system that loses substantial charge with the lid closed may be staying partially awake, using a shallow sleep state, powering a peripheral or encountering a firmware power-management issue.
Windows: use sleep diagnostics before changing settings
Framework’s Windows guidance points to SleepStudy for finding applications and services that keep the machine active during standby. The referenced Framework article discusses Windows 10, so use the sleep-report tooling supported by your current Windows release and interpret labels according to that release. The report can show sleep sessions, active time and components associated with wake or residency problems.
Before collecting a report, close applications, disconnect unnecessary USB devices and reproduce the issue with a known starting battery level. Record whether the machine was sleeping, hibernating or merely turning off the display. A device that never entered the intended sleep state will produce a different report from one that slept but consumed power unusually quickly.
Review the report for a service, driver, network activity or device with repeated activity. Update or reconfigure the responsible component rather than disabling unrelated services at random. If the report identifies a device that you need, test a different power setting or disconnect it temporarily to confirm the relationship.
Linux: verify the sleep mode and follow current distribution guidance
Framework notes that many Linux distributions do not enable deep sleep by default. The exact sleep implementation depends on the distribution, kernel, firmware and desktop environment, so do not apply a kernel parameter copied from an unrelated system.

Check which sleep modes are available and which one is selected by your distribution. Commands and file locations vary, but tools such as systemctl, journalctl and the distribution’s power-management settings can reveal suspend and resume events. Compare the configured mode with your distribution’s current Framework Laptop 12 instructions, especially after a kernel upgrade.
Record the kernel version, selected sleep mode and the battery percentage before and after a measured sleep period. If the laptop wakes by itself, inspect wake events and connected USB devices. If it remains asleep but loses more charge than expected, compare shallow and deep sleep only within configurations supported by your distribution and hardware generation.
Check the BIOS on the 13th Gen model
For the 13th Gen Intel Core Laptop 12, Framework lists BIOS 3.09 as the stable/latest release dated September 8, 2026. Its release notes say: “Fixed an issue where PROCHOT# might fail to release upon entering system sleep.” That fix is relevant to a specific sleep-transition issue, but it does not prove that every standby-drain report is caused by BIOS.
Use the 13th Gen BIOS page only for the 13th Gen machine. The Core Series 3 Laptop 12 has a separate BIOS page and must not receive 13th Gen firmware instructions. Check the live release page immediately before updating because download availability and version labels can change.
Improve active-use battery runtime
Find the workload consuming power
Open the operating system’s process or resource monitor while the battery is falling quickly. A sustained high-CPU process, browser workload, build job, video call, game or virtual machine can dominate consumption regardless of battery condition. Let the laptop sit idle for several minutes and compare the rate with the same display brightness and network state.
On Windows, Framework recommends the Better battery power profile as a starting point. Reduce brightness to a comfortable level, and check USB devices that may remain in a high-power state. External storage, phones, lighting, hubs and other accessories can draw power even when their primary function appears idle. Test with nonessential devices unplugged.
On Linux, use the distribution’s power-profile controls and inspect active processes, display brightness, radios and USB peripherals. Do not compare an unplugged video-rendering session with an idle text-editing session and call the difference battery health; workload and settings must be comparable.

Framework’s current Laptop 12 product information states that actual battery life may be less than test results and varies with configuration, use, software, operating conditions, power-management settings and other factors. There is no single runtime number that applies to every Laptop 12 configuration. Use your own repeatable workload and record brightness, wireless state, applications and operating-system version when comparing changes.

Windows battery report
Open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
powercfg /batteryreport
Windows saves an HTML report and prints its location. Open the file and compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity, then review recent usage and charge cycles. A lower full-charge figure indicates wear, but it should be interpreted alongside runtime under a controlled workload, charging behavior and any calibration irregularities.
Linux battery tools
Tool names and available data depend on the distribution. Framework identifies GNOME Power Statistics and upower as possible ways to inspect capacity, energy rate and battery state. For example, a system with upower installed can list devices with:

When a replacement battery is justified
Consider a replacement only when health data shows materially reduced capacity, runtime has declined under the same workload, or the battery reports a fault. Confirm the exact Laptop 12 generation and part compatibility before ordering. Framework indicates that Laptop 12 replacement parts are available, but compatibility must be checked against the machine rather than inferred from the product family name.
A replacement will not fix a high-CPU process, a bright display, a powered USB accessory, software that prevents sleep or a shallow-sleep configuration. Resolve those causes first so that a new battery is not used to mask a power-management problem.
Apply firmware and driver updates safely
13th Gen Intel Core release details
Framework’s 13th Gen Laptop 12 page lists BIOS 3.09, released September 8, 2026, as stable/latest. It also lists Windows Driver Bundle v1.03 from September 8, 2026, and a Windows-installation Wi‑Fi driver package released September 3, 2026. Confirm the live page before downloading because release pages can change.
Firmware updates require the charger to be connected. Save work, close applications and avoid interrupting the process. On Linux, Framework distributes supported firmware through LVFS and fwupd. The documented sequence is:
- Connect the charger and open a terminal.
- Refresh firmware metadata with
fwupdmgr refresh --force. - Check available updates with
fwupdmgr get-updates. - Start the update with
fwupdmgr update, then follow the reboot prompts.
Framework notes that LVFS may not offer the update when the battery is at 100 percent. If that occurs, discharge to about 95 percent, reconnect AC power and run the update check again. Do not force firmware installation from a different Laptop 12 generation.
Use a controlled test plan
Changing several variables at once makes the result impossible to interpret. Use this sequence and keep notes:
- Record generation, OS and version, BIOS, driver or kernel, Wi‑Fi adapter and starting battery percentage.
- For Wi‑Fi, test near the access point, identify the band, ping the gateway and repeat on another network.
- For sleep, record the selected sleep mode, disconnect nonessential USB devices and measure battery loss over a fixed period.
- For active runtime, use the same workload, brightness, network and peripherals before and after each change.
- Update only the firmware, driver or kernel intended for the exact generation, then retest the original symptom.
This approach distinguishes a local router problem from a laptop radio problem, software standby activity from firmware behavior, and battery wear from normal workload variation.
When to contact Framework support
Escalate through Framework’s support hub, community forum or support-request form when model-appropriate updates, network tests, sleep diagnostics and battery checks do not identify the cause. Include:

For a suspected hardware fault, explain whether the antenna connectors, bracket and other relevant parts were inspected according to the model’s repair instructions. This gives support enough information to distinguish configuration, firmware and physical causes without replacing parts prematurely.
Quick Recap
What the diagnosis usually tells you
- No networks plus an absent adapter: prioritize generation-appropriate driver or kernel support and physical detection.
- Weak signal after a repair: inspect antenna seating and bracket placement before replacing the card.
- Slow service only at distance: compare 2.4 GHz with 5/6 GHz and test gateway reachability.
- Large loss only during standby: inspect sleep reports, sleep mode and firmware rather than judging battery health from active runtime.
- Large loss during ordinary work: inspect workload, brightness, power profile, USB devices and capacity data.
- Reduced capacity confirmed by reports: verify the exact generation and compatible replacement battery.
