If your Chromebook (the “Googlebooks” laptop in the original wording) will not connect, work through the lowest-risk checks in order: confirm the intended network or Bluetooth accessory, run ChromeOS Diagnostics, restart and test after each change, compare with Ethernet or another device, install available ChromeOS updates, and then contact the appropriate manufacturer. Do not jump straight to a reset or recovery; recovery removes local files.

The exact labels can vary by Chromebook model and ChromeOS version. The steps below cover both “no connection” and “connected but unusable” cases without assuming that the Chromebook, router, internet service, or accessory is at fault.

Start with a quick, safe triage

Change one thing at a time and test immediately afterward. Google’s connection guidance specifically recommends testing after each troubleshooting step, so you can tell which change affected the result.

What you observe First check Useful comparison
Wi‑Fi is missing or turned off Select the time in the lower-right corner and confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled. Check that the Chromebook is attempting to use the intended network. Look for the same network on another device.
The Chromebook says it is connected, but websites do not load Confirm that the connection actually provides internet access, then run Diagnostics. Try another device on the same router.
Wi‑Fi fails, but a wired connection works Keep the wired result as evidence that the wireless path needs closer attention. Test Wi‑Fi on another network if one is available.
Bluetooth cannot find an accessory Check compatibility, power, discoverability, and pairing mode on the accessory. Try one accessory at a time.
Bluetooth connects and then drops Check charge, distance, nearby wireless equipment, and unused apps or tabs. Move the Chromebook and accessory closer and retest.

These observations narrow the possibilities; none proves a particular hardware failure by itself. Before changing anything, note the exact symptom: whether the network or accessory appears, whether a connection is reported, and whether the failure is repeatable. That short record prevents a temporary improvement from being mistaken for a confirmed repair.

Fix Wi‑Fi when there is no connection or no internet

1. Confirm the basic connection state

  1. Select the time on the Chromebook shelf.
  2. Make sure Wi‑Fi is on and that the Chromebook is connected to the network you intend to use.
  3. Open a site or service you normally use. A Wi‑Fi symbol alone does not establish that the router has working internet access.

If the network name is absent, check whether Wi‑Fi is enabled and whether other devices can see the router. If the network appears but internet access does not work, continue with Diagnostics rather than repeatedly entering the password. If the Chromebook is connected to a different saved network, select the intended one before judging the result.

2. Run ChromeOS Diagnostics

On ChromeOS 90 and later, the built-in Diagnostics app can test the default connection method and includes connectivity checks for Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, cellular, and Google services.

  1. Select the time.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Diagnostics.
  5. Run the available connectivity tests, following the prompts for the connection you are investigating.
  6. If the issue remains, save the test details so you can provide them to support.

The results are evidence, not a diagnosis of a specific component. Record what was tested and whether the failure was repeatable before changing another setting. If Diagnostics is not shown, the Chromebook may be running an older ChromeOS version or have model-specific controls; use the available settings and ask the manufacturer or administrator for the correct path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Restart and retest

Restart the Chromebook normally, reconnect to the intended Wi‑Fi network, and test the same site or service again. Keep the result separate from the earlier Diagnostics result. If the connection works after a restart, note that temporary software state was involved, but do not assume the underlying cause is permanently solved. Test more than one site or service when practical so that a single unavailable service is not confused with a general internet failure.

4. Compare wired Ethernet and another computer

When available, connect the Chromebook to the router with a workable Ethernet cable or a USB Ethernet adapter that supports ChromeOS and matches the Chromebook’s port. This is an optional diagnostic comparison, not a repair or a required purchase. A USB-C adapter is appropriate only when the Chromebook has a matching USB-C port and the selected adapter explicitly supports ChromeOS.

  1. Connect the cable or compatible adapter to the Chromebook and router.
  2. Wait for the wired connection to become active.
  3. Test the same online service that failed over Wi‑Fi.
  4. Ask whether another computer can connect to the same router.

If wired Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi does not, the wireless path becomes more suspect. If another computer also cannot use the router, the router or internet service deserves attention. These comparisons narrow the area of investigation but do not conclusively identify a failed part. Disconnect the adapter after testing if you do not need a wired connection; it is an evidence-gathering tool, not a promise that Wi‑Fi will be repaired.

5. Install available ChromeOS updates

When any internet connection is available, check for system updates:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the time.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. If an update is installed, restart when prompted so the update can finish.

After the restart, reconnect and repeat the same test. On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, update and network controls may be administered centrally; involve the administrator instead of trying to bypass those controls. A managed device can also have policies that affect which networks or accessories are permitted, so tell the administrator exactly what the Chromebook displays rather than changing settings repeatedly.

Use the results to locate the likely Wi‑Fi problem

Use a pattern of observations rather than treating one test as proof.

Pattern What it suggests Next action
Several devices fail on the same router The router or internet service is a stronger possibility than a Chromebook-only setting. Check the router and service, while retaining the Chromebook’s test details.
Other devices work, but this Chromebook fails on that network The Chromebook’s configuration, software state, compatibility, or wireless hardware becomes more plausible. Complete Diagnostics, restart, update, and test another network if possible.
Ethernet works, Wi‑Fi does not The problem is more specific to the wireless path. Keep the wired result for support and continue Wi‑Fi-focused checks.
The Chromebook fails across multiple networks A Chromebook-side issue becomes more plausible than a single-router problem. Save Diagnostics details and prepare for manufacturer support.

ChromeOS guidance does not publish a definitive decision tree that can distinguish every router, radio, driver, or accessory failure from these observations alone. Avoid declaring a hardware defect until the manufacturer has assessed the evidence. If only one network fails, preserve that comparison for the router or network administrator; if every tested network fails, preserve the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, and Diagnostics output for Chromebook support.

Fix Bluetooth when an accessory will not pair

1. Confirm that Bluetooth is available

Select the time and look for Bluetooth controls. The Chromebook must be Bluetooth-compatible. If Bluetooth controls are not available, check the model’s specifications or contact the Chromebook manufacturer rather than assuming a software toggle will add the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Put the accessory into the correct pairing state

  1. Turn on the keyboard, mouse, headset, speaker, or other accessory.
  2. Charge it sufficiently for pairing and use.
  3. Follow the accessory maker’s instructions to make it discoverable and place it in pairing mode. A device that is powered on is not necessarily discoverable.
  4. On the Chromebook, select the time, open Bluetooth, and choose the accessory when it appears.
  5. Complete any confirmation or code prompt shown on both devices.

If the accessory is already paired with another nearby device, disconnect it there or follow its instructions for entering pairing mode again. Test one accessory at a time so a second device does not obscure the result. Keep the accessory close during the first pairing attempt, then repeat the test after moving it to the normal working position.

  • Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft

3. Toggle Bluetooth, restart, and update

  1. Turn Chromebook Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
  2. Restart the Chromebook.
  3. Check Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates and restart if an update is installed.
  4. Try pairing the accessory again while it is close to the Chromebook.

These steps reset temporary software state without deleting local files. If the accessory still cannot connect, save the exact model, charge status, pairing behavior, and any message shown for support. Do not treat a phone’s failure to appear as evidence that Bluetooth is broken: Google’s Chromebook instructions say a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook over Bluetooth.

Do not pair a phone to a Chromebook over Bluetooth

Google’s Chromebook instructions state that a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook over Bluetooth. For a Chromebook-and-phone connection, use Google’s separate supported Android-phone connection method rather than treating the failed Bluetooth pairing as a defective radio.

Fix Bluetooth connections that keep dropping

Intermittent connections require a different set of checks from a device that never appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify support: Confirm that the Chromebook and accessory support the Bluetooth connection you are attempting.
  2. Check charge: Fully charge the accessory or replace its batteries if applicable. Low power can interrupt an otherwise successful connection.
  3. Toggle Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth off and on from the Chromebook’s controls, then test again.
  4. Reduce distance: Move the Chromebook and accessory closer together with as few obstructions as practical.
  5. Reduce interference: Move the accessory away from other wireless devices and appliances, then retest.
  6. Close unused software: Close unused tabs and apps before testing again.
  7. Test one accessory: Disconnect other Bluetooth accessories temporarily to see whether the dropout is limited to one device or occurs broadly.

If only one accessory continues to disconnect, the accessory maker is an appropriate support route. If multiple supported accessories fail on the Chromebook after these checks, contact the Chromebook manufacturer with the test details. Keep track of whether the dropout occurs only at a distance, only near other wireless equipment, or even when the accessory is charged and next to the Chromebook; that distinction helps support reproduce the problem.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Repeating the same password entry: First establish whether the network is visible and whether another device can use the router.
  • Calling a Wi‑Fi connection “internet” automatically: Test an actual site or service and record whether the failure is local to one service or general.
  • Buying hardware too early: A USB Ethernet adapter or cable can provide a useful comparison, but it is not a Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth repair and must match the Chromebook’s port and ChromeOS support.
  • Assuming one failed test proves a defective radio: Compare another network, Ethernet, another computer, or another Bluetooth accessory before escalating.
  • Using recovery as a routine toggle: Recovery is destructive and belongs after lower-risk steps, backups, and appropriate support guidance.
  • Trying to pair a phone by Bluetooth: Use Google’s supported Android-phone connection method instead.

When and how to escalate

Prepare useful information for support

Before contacting support, write down the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, the network or accessory model, the exact symptom, when it began, and which steps changed the result. For Wi‑Fi, save the ChromeOS Diagnostics details. For Bluetooth, note whether the device is discoverable, charged, supported, and able to stay connected at close range. Include whether another network, computer, Ethernet connection, or accessory worked; these comparisons are often more useful than a general statement that “wireless is broken.”

Choose the right support route

  • Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when Diagnostics and ordinary software troubleshooting do not resolve a Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth problem, especially when the Chromebook fails across networks or with multiple supported accessories.
  • Contact the Bluetooth accessory manufacturer when the issue follows one headset, keyboard, mouse, speaker, or other accessory while other accessories work.
  • Contact the network administrator for a work- or school-managed Chromebook when policies, updates, or network settings are controlled by the organization.
  • Investigate the router or internet service when several devices fail on the same router.

Do not buy a replacement wireless adapter or declare the Chromebook’s radio defective solely because one connection test failed. Support can interpret saved Diagnostics details and the comparison results in the context of the specific model.

Use reset and recovery only as a last resort

Google’s hardware and system guidance places less-invasive actions first: turn the Chromebook off and on, and consider a factory reset where appropriate, before recovery. A factory reset also requires care with local data, so back up files when possible and follow the current on-screen instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chromebook Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. It is not a routine Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi toggle. Use it only after ordinary troubleshooting and manufacturer or administrator guidance indicate that it is appropriate.

  1. Back up any files stored locally on the Chromebook, if you can still access them.
  2. If the Chromebook is managed, ask the administrator before resetting or recovering it.
  3. Confirm that you understand the permanent-erasure consequence.
  4. Follow Google’s current Chromebook Recovery procedure and allow ChromeOS to reinstall completely.
  5. After setup, install available updates and test Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth before restoring all applications and accessories.

If recovery does not solve the problem, retain the saved Diagnostics information and recovery result for the Chromebook manufacturer. A failed recovery is a reason to escalate, not a reason to repeat the erase operation without guidance.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist

  • Test the original symptom and write down exactly what fails.
  • Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled, the intended network is selected, or Bluetooth is available.
  • For Wi‑Fi, verify whether the connection provides internet access; for Bluetooth, verify power, charge, discoverability, pairing mode, and compatibility.
  • Run ChromeOS Diagnostics for connectivity on ChromeOS 90 or later and save the details if the issue persists.
  • Restart the Chromebook and test again.
  • Install updates through Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates when an internet connection is available.
  • Compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet and compare the router with another computer when possible.
  • For Bluetooth dropouts, reduce distance and interference, close unused tabs and apps, and test one accessory at a time.
  • Use the resulting pattern to choose router, accessory, administrator, or Chromebook-manufacturer support.
  • Reserve recovery for last-resort cases because it permanently erases local files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Chromebook show Wi‑Fi but say there is no internet?

A Wi‑Fi indicator only shows that the Chromebook has joined a wireless network. Test an actual site or service, then run Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. Compare the result with another device on the same router to determine whether the issue is broader than the Chromebook.

What does Chromebook Diagnostics test?

On ChromeOS 90 and later, Diagnostics tests the default connection method and includes connectivity checks for Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, cellular, and Google services. Save the test details if the problem continues so support can review them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a USB Ethernet adapter to fix Chromebook Wi‑Fi?

No. A workable Ethernet cable or compatible USB Ethernet adapter is an optional comparison tool. It can show whether wired networking works, but it does not repair Wi‑Fi. Confirm the Chromebook has the matching port and that the adapter supports ChromeOS.

Why does my Bluetooth accessory connect and then disconnect?

Verify compatibility and charge, toggle Bluetooth, move the Chromebook and accessory closer, move the accessory away from other wireless devices and appliances, and close unused tabs and apps. Test one accessory at a time. If only one device continues to fail, contact its manufacturer.

Can I pair my phone to a Chromebook with Bluetooth?

Google’s Chromebook instructions say a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook over Bluetooth. Use Google’s separate supported Android-phone connection method instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact the Chromebook manufacturer?

Contact the manufacturer when Diagnostics and ordinary troubleshooting do not resolve the problem, especially if the Chromebook fails across multiple networks or with multiple supported Bluetooth accessories. Provide the model, ChromeOS version, saved Diagnostics details, and your comparison results.

Will Chromebook Recovery delete my files?

Yes. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Back up local files when possible, ask an administrator about managed devices, and use recovery only after lower-risk steps and appropriate support guidance.

The Bottom Line

Confirm the connection state, test after every change, run ChromeOS Diagnostics, restart, update, and use Ethernet or another device as comparisons. For Bluetooth, verify compatibility, charge, discoverability, pairing mode, distance, and interference. Escalate with saved details, and reserve recovery for last because it permanently erases local files.
