How to troubleshoot websites that break when uBlock Origin blocks content

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with uBlock Origin’s Logger, not with a blanket allowlist. Reproduce the failure while the Logger is open, identify the request or page element that uBO blocked, redirected, modified or allowed, and inspect the matching filter. Then test the smallest temporary exception in the same site context, reload, and keep a rule only if it restores the feature without exposing the whole site to unwanted content.

A page that fails with uBO installed is not automatically a uBO problem. The Logger gives you evidence so you can separate a filter decision from a browser, website or extension fault.

What to do first when a site breaks

Write down the exact symptom before changing any setting. A page may fail to load at all, an embedded video or widget may be missing, a button may stay disabled, or a social-network link may disappear. Record the page URL, browser and version, uBlock Origin version, and whether a normal reload reproduces the problem. This prevents a broad exception from hiding the real cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also note whether the failure happens on the first page load, only after signing in, or only after clicking a particular control. A request made by an embedded frame can have a different source-site context from the top-level page, and that context can determine which rule wins. Capture the exact frame or feature rather than describing the whole site as “broken.”

The uBlock Origin project describes the Logger as the first troubleshooting step for pages that do not load or display as expected. Its troubleshooting page says, "The best way to troubleshoot uBlock Origin is with uBlock Origin: the logger will tell you what uBO is doing when you try to load a web page." Read the project guidance at uBlock Origin’s Troubleshooting page.

Use the Logger to identify the failing action

Open the Logger before reproducing the error

  1. Open uBlock Origin’s Logger from the extension interface.
  2. Keep the Logger visible while returning to the affected tab.
  3. Reload the page or repeat the action that fails.
  4. Note the time of the failure and the page or frame in which it occurs.

Opening it first matters: a request made during initial page construction may not occur again when you click the broken control. If necessary, clear the Logger view, reload, and then perform one action at a time so the relevant entries are easy to distinguish.

The Logger records uBO activity for network requests and DOM elements. Entries can show that an item was blocked, allowed, redirected or modified, together with the filter that matched. The project’s current Logger documentation calls it the tool of choice to see, understand, diagnose and fix uBO’s operation; consult The logger for the controls and views available in your installed version.

Filter the view around the broken feature

Use the Logger’s filtering controls to reduce a busy page to the relevant requests or elements. Look for the resource that corresponds to the missing feature: an embedded frame, script, image, media request, API call or DOM element. Inspect the source-site context as well as the destination URL. A request can look harmless in isolation but be governed by a rule that depends on the site from which it was made.

Open the details for a suspicious entry and identify:

  • Whether uBO blocked, allowed, redirected or modified the item.
  • The filter text that matched.
  • The filter list associated with a static rule, when the Logger supplies that information.
  • The request type and the source and destination domains.
  • Whether the entry is a network request or a DOM-level action.

A blocked network request is not the only possible explanation. A DOM entry can show that uBO removed or acted on an element after the page loaded, while an allowed or redirected request can reveal that another uBO mechanism—not a simple block—is affecting the feature. Compare entries for a working and failing action when that is practical.

If no entry associated with the failure appears, do not assume that an unrelated blocked request is responsible. Continue the diagnosis in the browser and on the website itself; the official material does not establish that every page failure is caused by uBO.

Test a narrow exception without weakening the whole site

Start with a temporary URL rule

When the Logger identifies a matching action, use its filtering controls to create a dynamic URL rule aimed at the affected destination URL in the affected source-site context. URL filtering is intended to diagnose and mitigate breakage caused by dynamic or static filtering. It takes precedence over both of those mechanisms, so a precisely scoped test can answer whether the identified request is the cause.

  1. Select the relevant Logger entry and open the control for testing a URL rule.
  2. Keep the source-site context and destination as specific as the evidence allows.
  3. Apply the rule temporarily; Logger-created URL rules are temporary by default.
  4. Reload the page and repeat the failed action.
  5. Compare the result with the original behavior and check the Logger for the same request.

Do not broaden the destination just because several requests share a host. A host can serve advertising, analytics and the functional resource from different paths. The useful test is the smallest URL scope that corresponds to the failed request, with the same source page or frame shown by the Logger.

A successful reload is useful evidence, but it does not justify allowing every request from the domain. Keep the exception tied to the resource that restored the feature.

Understand noop and allow before choosing one

uBO distinguishes between bypassing a broader dynamic decision and allowing a request through static blocking. A noop bypasses broader dynamic rules while leaving static filtering in place. An allow rule can override related static blocking filters, which is why it should normally be narrower and temporary. The quick guide warns that an overly broad allow can let ads, trackers or other annoyances through; see Dynamic filtering: quick guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the least powerful change that fixes the tested feature:

  • Use a noop when the evidence points to a broad dynamic rule and the needed resource is not itself statically blocked.
  • Use a narrowly scoped allow only when a static filter is the confirmed cause and the feature cannot work with a noop.
  • Use a site-wide trusted setting only as a comparison or last resort, because it disables filtering for the selected site.

The practical comparison is about scope, effect, reversibility and evidence. A one-resource URL test is narrower than a domain rule; a noop leaves static filtering active; an allow can let a statically blocked request through; and a temporary rule is easier to undo than a saved one. No option is universally correct: match the remedy to the filter identified in the Logger.

How uBO rule precedence explains surprising results

A test may appear ineffective when another rule with higher precedence still determines the outcome. The practical order documented by the project is:

Rule or setting What it targets Effect and precedence
Dynamic URL filtering A destination URL in a source-site context Overrides dynamic filtering and static filters; intended for diagnosing and mitigating breakage.
Dynamic allow or block rule Requests according to source domain, destination domain and request type Overrides static filtering; more specific rules take precedence over broader ones.
Trusted-site directive The selected site Disables filtering for that site, overriding dynamic and static filtering.
Noop A site or rule scope affected by dynamic filtering Bypasses broader dynamic rules while leaving static filtering active.
Allow rule A matching request or URL Can override related static blocking, so broad scopes may permit ads, trackers or annoyances.

The project documents these relationships in Dynamic URL filtering and Dynamic filtering: precedence. If a test does not change the page, verify that the rule matches the exact resource, request type and source-site context shown in the Logger, then check whether a more specific or higher-precedence rule is still active.

Precedence also explains why copying a broad rule from a forum can produce an unexpected result. A rule that works for one source domain may not match an embedded frame, and a broader dynamic decision may continue to apply when the attempted exception has the wrong context. Read the Logger’s matched-rule information rather than guessing from the destination hostname.

Persist only a confirmed, specific fix

Confirm the fix through a reload

Do not save a rule merely because the page changed once. Reload the page with the temporary rule active, repeat the action that failed, and check that the Logger now shows the intended request as allowed or otherwise handled as expected. If the feature still fails, remove the test and inspect for a second blocked request or DOM action instead of widening the exception automatically.

Run the test more than once when the feature involves a sequence of requests, such as opening a widget and then submitting a form. A first request may load the interface while a later API call remains blocked. The goal is to confirm the complete feature, not just a visible change after the first reload.

Make a URL rule persistent only after testing

Logger-created dynamic URL rules are temporary by default. The Logger provides a control, represented in the documentation by a padlock, to make a tested rule persistent. The quick guide likewise describes dynamic filtering rules as temporary until you save them. Persist only the smallest rule that survives a clean reload and restores the required feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a note of what the rule fixes and why. If the site later changes its resource URL, the old exception may no longer be needed; remove obsolete rules rather than replacing them with a broader domain-wide allow. Revisit saved exceptions after site redesigns, filter-list updates or uBO changes.

When a trusted site is useful—and when it is excessive

A trusted-site directive is a diagnostic comparison: it turns off filtering for the selected site so you can see whether the page works without uBO’s protections. Because it disables both dynamic and static filtering for that site, it is broader than identifying one request. Use it to confirm that filtering is involved when the Logger evidence is ambiguous, then return to a resource-level or request-level rule if possible.

Leaving a site trusted changes the security and privacy trade-off for every page on that site. It may permit advertising, trackers, social widgets and other content that the filter lists would normally block. A trusted setting should therefore be a deliberate, documented choice rather than the default fix for a single broken control.

Symptom-specific checks documented by uBO

Social-network links are missing or blocked

The project’s troubleshooting page points to filter-list configuration for this symptom. It specifically recommends enabling Fanboy’s Social Blocking List, or a list that includes it such as Fanboy’s Annoyance List, when social-network links are blocked. This lead applies to that documented symptom; do not generalize it to unrelated page failures. Verify the list in your filter-list settings and then reload the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

uBO appears in the toolbar but is not active

The troubleshooting documentation records a Chromium-based-browser incident in which uBO appeared in the toolbar but was not actually in memory after an extension update. In that reported case, opening the browser’s Extensions page, unchecking Enable and checking it again restarted the extension and resolved the issue. Treat this as a possible update-related failure, not as the normal explanation for every breakage. If the Logger cannot be opened or records no activity at all, checking the extension’s enabled state is reasonable.

If the Logger does not identify a cause

A missing Logger entry means you should broaden the diagnosis carefully, not grant the whole site access immediately. Check whether the feature fails in a clean browser profile or with other extensions disabled, and whether the site reports an error. Those comparisons help distinguish a website or browser fault from uBO behavior, but they do not prove a site-specific cause without reproducible evidence.

Reload after each controlled change. If the page works only when every filter is disabled, return to the Logger and identify which request or DOM element changes between the protected and unprotected states. If the page fails in both states, uBO is unlikely to be the sole cause.

A repeatable troubleshooting workflow

  1. Describe the failure precisely. Name the page, feature and action that fails, such as a missing embed, disabled control or blocked social link.
  2. Capture environment details. Record the full page URL, browser and version, uBO version, and whether a reload reproduces the issue.
  3. Open the Logger and reproduce. Reload while watching requests and DOM entries.
  4. Match the evidence. Find the request or element that corresponds to the broken feature and read its action, filter, list, source context and destination.
  5. Test the narrowest temporary rule. Use a dynamic URL rule for the exact destination and context; choose noop or allow based on whether dynamic or static filtering is responsible.
  6. Reload and verify. Repeat the action and confirm the Logger reflects the intended change.
  7. Persist only if necessary. Use the Logger’s persistence control for a confirmed, specific rule.
  8. Reassess unresolved failures. If no relevant uBO action appears, investigate browser, extension and site causes instead of broadening the exception.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

  • Disabling uBO globally: This removes evidence and protection at once. Use the Logger and a temporary, scoped test instead.
  • Allowing an entire domain: A domain-wide allow can override static blocking for unrelated resources. Scope the rule to the destination and source context shown in the Logger.
  • Saving before testing: Temporary rules let you verify a fix without creating lasting exposure. Persist only after a reload confirms the feature works.
  • Ignoring request context: Rules depend on source domain, destination domain and request type. Copying a rule without those conditions may match too much or nothing at all.
  • Assuming every blocked item is the cause: Pages commonly load many blocked resources. Tie the Logger entry to the specific missing feature.
  • Overlooking precedence: URL rules, dynamic rules and trusted-site directives do not have equal power. Check the documented precedence before escalating a rule.
  • Keeping obsolete exceptions: Remove a rule when the site no longer needs it or changes the resource it uses.
  • Testing several changes at once: If you change a filter list, trust the site and add an allow rule together, you cannot tell which change mattered. Revert and test one controlled change at a time.
  • Confusing an allowed request with a working feature: A request can be allowed while a separate script, frame or DOM action still fails. Verify the complete user action in the Logger.

What to include when asking for help

For a case-specific diagnosis, provide the affected page URL, browser and version, uBO version, exact broken behavior, whether the problem survives a reload, and the relevant Logger entries or troubleshooting details. Include the matching filter and source-site context when visible, while omitting private account information or tokens. Website code and filter lists change, so an exception that fixes one incident may not apply to another user or a later version of the site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful evidence is specific: identify the failed control, the destination URL, the request type, the action uBO took and the filter text or list named by the Logger. Say whether a temporary URL rule changed the result and whether the change survived a clean reload. This lets someone evaluate scope and precedence instead of recommending a blanket disable.

This evidence-based approach keeps the remedy proportional: identify the action, test one narrow change, verify it, and only then decide whether a persistent exception is justified.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know whether uBlock Origin caused the breakage?

Open the Logger before reloading the page, reproduce the failure, and match the missing feature to a blocked, redirected, modified or otherwise relevant request or DOM entry. If no related uBO action appears, compare the page with other extensions disabled or in a clean profile rather than assuming uBO is responsible.

Should I use noop or allow?

Use noop when a broader dynamic rule is the problem and static filtering can remain active. Use a narrowly scoped allow only when the Logger identifies a static blocking filter that noop does not overcome. Broad allows can let ads, trackers and annoyances through.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my exception not change anything?

Check that it matches the exact destination, request type and source-site context shown in the Logger. A different frame or URL may be failing, or a more specific or higher-precedence rule may still control the request.

Is trusting the whole site a safe fix?

Trusting a site disables dynamic and static filtering there, so it is broader than a resource-level exception. Use it as a temporary diagnostic comparison, then replace it with the narrowest confirmed rule if possible.

How do I make a tested rule permanent?

Logger-created URL rules are temporary by default. Reload and repeat the complete feature first; once the specific rule is confirmed, use the Logger’s padlock persistence control. Remove it later if the site no longer needs it.

What if uBO is visible but the Logger shows nothing?

A documented Chromium update incident involved uBO appearing in the toolbar while not actually running. On the browser’s Extensions page, uncheck Enable and check it again to restart the extension. Treat this as one possible update-related fault, not a universal diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use uBlock Origin’s Logger as your evidence trail: reproduce the failure, identify the exact request or DOM action and matching rule, test a temporary URL exception in the same source context, and reload to verify the complete feature. Prefer noop or a narrowly scoped allow over trusting an entire site, persist only a confirmed fix, and investigate browser or website causes when the Logger shows no relevant uBO action.
