Then test HDR playback and battery settings, isolate app-specific previews, and check for a documented brightness limit or an external-connection issue. The right fix depends on whether you use the built-in screen or an external monitor; Apple does not document one universal setting that fixes every HDR appearance.
First identify the display and where the problem appears
Check whether the issue is on the Mac’s built-in display or an external monitor. Also note whether it affects the whole desktop, only HDR video, or just one app or preview. That distinction matters: Apple’s High Dynamic Range control in Displays settings is for supported third-party HDR10 displays, not the control for a Mac’s built-in screen. Apple’s HDR playback guidance explains the supported external-display setting.

- If the whole display looks wrong, review its selected preset first.
- If HDR video changes only when the Mac is unplugged, check the battery video-streaming optimization.
- If only one application preview differs, investigate that app’s viewing or tone-mapping behavior.
- If an XDR display shows Apple’s brightness-limited warning, follow the cooling guidance below.
Check the selected preset or reference mode
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Select the affected display, then review the Preset menu.
- For everyday home or office use, choose a suitable general-use preset rather than a production reference mode you do not need.
A preset can change several things at once, including color space, white point, gamma, and brightness. Available modes depend on the display and the workflow. Apple warns that a reference mode used with the wrong media or viewing environment may produce unsatisfactory results. See Apple’s guide to reference modes.

Reference modes are not simply brighter-versus-dimmer choices. For example, Apple lists a 1,600-nit peak for the Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) mode on MacBook Pro and for the Pro Display XDR (P3-1,600 nits) mode on Pro Display XDR. That is a mode- and display-specific peak figure, not a target brightness for ordinary troubleshooting. Apple also describes HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) as a production mode with 1,000 nits full-screen sustained on supported XDR displays, intended for a controlled viewing environment. Apple’s mode descriptions provide the context for these figures.

Check external HDR playback and battery settings
For a supported third-party HDR10 monitor, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the external monitor, and check whether High Dynamic Range is enabled. This control applies to supported external displays; it is not a general HDR switch for the built-in display. Apple’s HDR playback instructions also describe a battery-related case: when Optimize video streaming while on battery is enabled, HDR video playback can switch to SDR while the Mac is on battery.
- Connect the Mac to power and replay the same HDR content.
- If that changes the result, check Battery settings—or Energy Saver on macOS versions that use that label—for Optimize video streaming while on battery.
- Turn that optimization off temporarily to test whether it is causing the switch to SDR.
Some older Intel Mac models may limit HDR playback resolution to 1080p, depending on the content and display. That is a playback-resolution limitation, not proof that the monitor’s color is defective. Apple lists this qualification in its HDR guidance.

When only one app or preview looks different
A difference confined to one app does not, by itself, show that the Mac’s display settings are wrong. Preview tone mapping can be application-specific. In Motion, Apple says HDR content is tone mapped in the canvas when shown on an HDR or SDR display. Motion’s XDR reference-mode workflow can change the Show HDR as Tone Mapped behavior; that setting affects Motion’s view, not the final render. This documented behavior should not be assumed to describe every Mac app. See Apple’s Motion guide to HDR appearance in the canvas.

Respond to a brightness-limited warning on an XDR display
This guidance applies when a MacBook Pro with a Liquid Retina XDR display or a Pro Display XDR shows the documented brightness-limited state. Apple says it can occur when the display is warm, including after extended use with bright content. It is a protective limit, not the same issue as an incorrectly selected preset. Apple’s brightness-limited display guidance recommends reducing heat and HDR load.

- On a MacBook Pro, quit apps using significant system resources.
- Use the Apple XDR Display or Pro Display XDR reference mode unless your workflow requires a different mode.
- Lower the room temperature if possible, and close or hide windows with HDR content.
- Put the Mac to sleep and let the display cool for 5–10 minutes before waking it. Apple Support’s instruction is: “Let your display cool down for 5–10 minutes, then press any key on the keyboard to wake your Mac.”

If the affected screen is external, a cable or adapter can limit the display modes the Mac can use. That makes compatibility worth checking, but Apple’s guidance does not establish that replacing a cable fixes washed-out HDR color. For troubleshooting, connect the display directly to the Mac instead of through a hub or dock, and secure both the display and power connections. Apple’s external-display guidance covers supported configurations and detection steps.

- Verify that the Mac, monitor, cable or adapter, and any dock support the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR format you intend to use.
- Install current macOS updates and check with the monitor manufacturer for any applicable display-firmware update.
- If considering a USB-C to HDMI adapter, confirm compatibility with your specific Mac and monitor and with the required resolution and refresh rate before buying; an adapter is not a color-correction fix.
- If the external display is not detected, use Apple’s connection and display-detection steps rather than treating detection as an HDR-color problem.
Display capabilities vary by Mac, monitor, cable, adapter, dock, and macOS version, so the available settings and supported modes may differ from the examples above.
