Update Steam and the host device, restart everything, test a supported wired connection, and then use Steam’s controller test or detection screen. That sequence separates pairing and USB problems from Steam Input and per-game configuration problems.
The menus differ between a Steam Deck, the 2026 Steam Controller and its Puck, and the legacy 2015 Steam Controller. Follow the instructions for your hardware rather than assuming that one controller’s pairing or test procedure applies to another.

First, identify the failure layer
Do not begin by changing a game’s controller layout if the host computer cannot see the controller. Conversely, reinstalling drivers will not fix a game that has Steam Input disabled or an overlay that cannot start. Use the symptom that matches your situation:

Record the controller model, connection method, host platform and whether the operating system itself recognizes it. Those four details determine which support path is appropriate if the problem persists.

Step 1: Update and restart before changing settings
Install pending Steam client and operating-system updates. Also install firmware updates offered for the controller, receiver or Puck. Valve lists updating and restarting as first-line actions for both the current Steam Controller and Steam Deck; they are sensible checks, not a guarantee that the controller will be repaired.
On a Windows or macOS computer
- Allow Steam to finish any client update and restart Steam completely rather than leaving it minimized.
- Install available operating-system updates, then restart the computer.
- Power the controller off and back on. If it uses a receiver or Puck, unplug that accessory during the restart and reconnect it after the desktop is ready.
- Retry detection before opening the game. This prevents a game launch from obscuring whether Steam itself sees the device.
On Steam Deck
- Install SteamOS updates and restart the Deck.
- Power-cycle the controller or Bluetooth accessory.
- If you installed third-party applications in Desktop Mode, temporarily exit or disable them while retesting. Valve includes this as a troubleshooting step for input issues because another utility can intercept or remap events.
Do not skip this step after a firmware update. A controller can remain paired yet fail to present inputs until both the host and the controller have restarted.
Step 2: Prove that the controller connects to the host
A wired test is the fastest way to separate a wireless or pairing fault from a Steam configuration fault, but only when the controller supports wired data. A charging-only USB cable cannot serve as this diagnostic.

The 2026 Steam Controller supports Puck wireless, Bluetooth and USB-C wired modes. With the controller switched off, plug it directly into the computer with a suitable USB-C data cable. Valve documents that this should power the controller in USB-C mode and show a green LED. Treat that LED behavior as specific to this model; do not use it as a universal diagnostic for other controllers.
If the controller appears over USB-C, leave it connected while checking Steam’s input test. A successful wired test means the controller and basic input path work, so concentrate next on Puck pairing, Bluetooth visibility, receiver placement or radio interference. If USB-C does not produce any host response, try another known-good data cable and another port before concluding that Steam is at fault.

Steam Deck Bluetooth
On the Deck, open Settings > Bluetooth. If the controller is not listed, enable Show all devices, then look again. Check for a controller firmware update before attempting another pairing.
- Turn the controller off and put it into its documented pairing mode.
- In Settings > Bluetooth, select it from the device list.
- If the old entry is present but pairing fails, forget the device and pair it again.
Valve notes that many Xbox controllers may need a firmware update to work as expected with Steam Deck. If an Xbox controller is visible but behaves unpredictably, update its firmware using the manufacturer’s supported process before treating the Deck as the cause.
Bluetooth, Puck and receiver connections
For a 2026 Steam Controller using its Puck, confirm that the Puck is connected to the host and that the controller is paired with the correct Puck rather than another nearby device. Steam’s controller details screen provides a signal-strength indicator; use it later to evaluate placement. For the 2015 Steam Controller, follow its legacy receiver connection procedure rather than the 2026 Puck instructions. The two generations do not share every pairing step.
Check the host’s own USB or Bluetooth device list before opening Steam. If the operating system does not list the controller, Steam cannot discover it through software settings. If the operating system does list it but Steam does not, continue to Steam’s detection view instead of repeatedly pairing.
Step 3: Confirm detection inside Steam
Steam Deck input test
On Steam Deck, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. Press buttons, move both sticks and operate the triggers or trackpads your controller provides. A response in this test confirms that the Deck and Steam can receive input, even if a particular game later needs its own configuration.

If the test screen remains empty, return to the connection checks: Bluetooth visibility, firmware, a direct cable test and a restart. Do not troubleshoot a game profile until this screen responds.
Legacy 2015 Steam Controller detection
For the 2015 Steam Controller support flow, enter Big Picture Mode and open Settings > Controller > Controller settings. Look under Detected Controllers. The list is the relevant checkpoint for this legacy device.
If the controller is absent from Detected Controllers, verify the receiver or wired connection, test another USB port, restart Steam and remove possible USB contention. If it appears in the list, the hardware is reaching Steam; move to the per-game checks below.
2026 Steam Controller details
When the 2026 controller is connected, open Steam’s controller details or input-test view and check whether its Puck signal indicator is stable. A weak or fluctuating indicator points toward placement or interference rather than a missing game layout. Use the USB-C test to establish a baseline before judging wireless performance.
Steam’s labels and exact locations can change between client releases. Use the device-specific paths above as the reference points, but do not assume that a menu shown for the 2015 controller exists unchanged on the Deck or on the 2026 model.

Step 4: When Steam detects it but a game does not respond
A responding Steam input test changes the diagnosis: this is no longer a basic device-discovery failure. Open the affected game’s Steam controller configuration and inspect whether Steam Input is enabled for that title and whether the selected input style matches what the game supports. Save the configuration, close the game fully and launch it again after Steam has loaded the profile.
Check the Steam Overlay for the legacy controller
Valve’s 2015 Steam Controller guidance describes the Steam Overlay as vital to Steam Controller functionality and directs users to enable it when it is unavailable. Apply that instruction to the legacy Steam Controller support path; it is not a universal requirement for every third-party controller or every modern Steam Input setup.
Launch the game from Steam rather than a separate shortcut, then use the in-game overlay shortcut to verify that the overlay opens. If it does not, check the game’s Steam properties and overlay setting, close conflicting overlays or input remappers, restart Steam and test again. A game that blocks the overlay can prevent the controller configuration from being applied even though Steam’s global test works.
Separate a single-game problem from a global problem
Test the same controller in another Steam title that supports controller input. If the second title responds while the first does not, keep the investigation inside the first game’s controller configuration and input compatibility. If no title responds despite a successful Steam input test, inspect the profile, overlay and input style before returning to hardware checks.

Step 5: Isolate USB contention and wireless interference
Try another USB port
If a receiver or Puck works in one port but not another, disconnect unnecessary USB devices and test again. Valve describes USB scheduling and contention issues that can appear as intermittent disconnections, unreliable connections or performance changes after another USB device is attached. A different port is therefore a diagnostic, not merely a convenience.

- Disconnect storage devices, hubs and other accessories that are not needed for the test.
- Move the receiver or Puck to a different USB port, preferably directly on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Restart Steam and repeat the controller detection test.
- Reconnect accessories one at a time if the controller becomes stable, so you can identify a combination that causes the interruption.
Improve the 2026 Puck’s radio path
Use the signal-strength indicator in Steam’s controller details. Give the Puck a clear line of sight to the controller and move likely interference sources away from it, including Wi-Fi access points and high-speed USB devices. Test with the Puck positioned where the computer’s chassis, a monitor or a pile of cables does not obstruct it.
Docked Steam Deck Bluetooth
When a Deck is docked and the controller uses Bluetooth, keep a clear line of sight, move the Deck or controller away from nearby 2.4 GHz devices and separate high-bandwidth USB 3 accessories from the Deck. These changes matter most when input is intermittent rather than completely absent.
Do not interpret one successful button press as proof that the wireless path is healthy. Run the complete Steam input test for several seconds, move both sticks and press the triggers repeatedly. Intermittent failures often become visible only during sustained input.
Device-specific recovery paths
Steam Deck controller not detected
- Install SteamOS and controller firmware updates, then restart the Deck.
- Check Settings > Bluetooth; enable Show all devices if necessary.
- Forget and re-pair the controller if its saved entry fails.
- Use Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs.
- If docked, improve Bluetooth line of sight and separate 2.4 GHz and USB 3 interference sources.
If the Deck’s test responds, troubleshoot the individual game rather than pairing again.
2026 Steam Controller not detected
- Update Steam, the host operating system and the controller or Puck firmware, then restart.
- Connect the powered-off controller directly by USB-C with a data-capable cable. A green LED indicates USB-C mode for this model.
- If wired input works, inspect Puck pairing, signal strength, line of sight and nearby Wi-Fi or high-speed USB devices.
- If wired input fails, test another data cable and USB port, then check whether the operating system lists the controller.
- Use Steam’s controller details or input-test view before opening a game.
2015 Steam Controller not detected
- Restart Steam and the computer after installing updates.
- Verify the legacy receiver or supported wired connection and test a different USB port.
- In Big Picture Mode, open Settings > Controller > Controller settings and check Detected Controllers.
- If it is detected, verify the game’s Steam controller configuration and Steam Overlay.
- If it is not detected, continue with USB contention and receiver-placement checks rather than changing the game layout.
When to escalate to Steam Support
Escalate after you have recorded the model, connection method, host platform, operating-system recognition and the result of Steam’s test or detection screen. Include whether wired input works, whether wireless is intermittent or absent, which USB ports you tried and whether the problem affects every game or only one.
For current Steam Controller service concerns, Valve directs users to contact Steam Support through its Steam Controller (2026) feature and troubleshooting guide. Steam Deck users should use the Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide. Avoid disassembling the controller or buying replacement parts solely because Steam does not list it. First establish whether the host recognizes it and whether a supported wired test works. Those results provide the evidence needed to distinguish a connection failure from Steam Input or game configuration.
