When a Steam Deck game will not start, first determine whether the problem is a compatibility limitation, damaged game files, a Proton configuration, a network-dependent Steam error, or a wider SteamOS problem. Check the title’s Deck rating and requirements, install SteamOS updates, restart, isolate Desktop Mode applications, verify files, and test Proton one change at a time. Keep SteamOS repair or re-imaging for the end: those options can remove local data, installed games, applications, or the entire operating system.
This order follows Valve’s current troubleshooting guidance, but no rating or Proton change guarantees that a particular title will work. Proton behavior depends on the game, its updates, and the selected compatibility-tool version.

Start with a quick diagnosis
Before changing settings, establish the scope of the failure. A title that crashes while other games run calls for a different path from a Deck that cannot connect to Steam or has unstable menus everywhere.
| What you observe | Most useful first checks | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| One game fails; other games launch | Deck compatibility details, that game’s files and requirements, then its per-game Proton setting | An immediate crash alone does not prove the game is Unsupported |
| Several games or Steam itself are unstable | SteamOS update, restart, and isolation of third-party Desktop Mode applications | A single game setting is unlikely to explain every failure |
| Login, download, or connection error | Steam’s service status and another available Wi-Fi band | Network checks will not explain an offline graphics crash |
| “Game is not available on your current platform” | Supported operating systems and hardware on the Store page | This is a platform-support message, not an ordinary launch crash |
| Game reaches a launcher but performs poorly | Lower the graphics preset or individual settings after launch checks | A performance problem is not automatically a compatibility-rating problem |
Write down the exact error, when it appears, whether a launcher opens, whether the failure began after an update, and the title’s Store-page compatibility label. That record prevents several settings from being changed at once and makes a later support request more useful.

What the four Deck compatibility ratings mean
Valve uses four labels in the Steam Deck Compatibility program. They describe the state of Valve’s testing and expected configuration, not a promise that every installation will behave identically.
| Rating | Valve’s meaning | How to use it while troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Works great on Deck by default. | Start with updates, restart, file integrity, and requirements if it fails; do not treat Verified as proof that local files or a later game update are healthy. |
| Playable | Works, but may require manual configuration. | Open the Store page’s Steam Deck Compatibility section and read the listed unmet criteria before experimenting. |
| Unsupported | Not currently considered playable on Deck. | Read the unmet criteria. A Proton experiment can be informative, but it is not a promised fix. |
| Unknown | Valve does not yet have testing information for the title. | Treat the label as missing information, not as proof that the game fails. |
For a Playable or Unsupported title, select the compatibility information on the Store page and inspect which Verified requirements are not met. The details may identify text-entry, controller, launcher, graphics, or other conditions that explain why manual work is expected. An Unknown label tells you only that testing information is absent.

Step 1: apply the low-risk Deck-wide fixes
Do these checks before switching Proton versions or adding launch options. They are reversible and address problems caused by an outdated operating system or a conflicting background application.
- Install available SteamOS updates. In Gaming Mode, open the Steam menu, choose Settings, then System, and install any offered update. Allow the Deck to finish restarting if the update requests it.
- Restart the Deck. Use the Steam menu’s power controls rather than merely closing the game. A restart clears a stuck Steam process and ensures that an update is fully loaded.
- Temporarily exit third-party Desktop Mode applications. Switch to Desktop Mode and close or disable non-essential tools installed there, including overlays, input remappers, performance utilities, or compatibility managers. Retest the game with the smallest practical software setup.
- Change one variable at a time. Record the original setting, the change, and the result. If several tools and Proton versions are changed together, you cannot tell which change helped or introduced a new failure.
Valve’s general Deck instructions cover updating, restarting, and disabling third-party Desktop Mode applications in its Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

Step 2: check the game’s files and requirements
Verify the installed files
For a game in your Steam library, open Library, highlight the title, open its menu, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares the local installation with the expected files and replaces missing or damaged content. Let the process complete before launching again.
Verification can resolve a failed update or incomplete download, but it does not change an unsupported operating-system requirement or make incompatible hardware meet a game’s specification.
Read the operating-system and hardware requirements
Open the game’s Store page and read its system requirements. If Steam displays Game is not available on your current platform, Steam’s support explanation is that the title does not support the current operating system. Check the supported OS and hardware listed by the publisher instead of treating the message as a normal crash. The relevant guidance is in Steam’s “Game is not available on your current platform” support page.
Requirements are also relevant when a title reaches its launcher but closes, renders incorrectly, or performs far below expectations. A Deck compatibility label does not override a game’s own minimum requirements, and a game update can alter behavior after the original compatibility information was published.
Step 3: test Proton for a Steam library game
Proton is Steam’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games on SteamOS. The result is title- and version-dependent, so selecting a different tool is a diagnostic experiment rather than a guarantee.

The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
- Open Library and highlight the affected game.
- Open the game’s menu and choose Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest Proton version available in the list, then close the Properties window and launch the game.
Valve’s wording is direct: “Try choosing the latest version of Proton.” You can find that instruction in the Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide. Steam may download the Windows build of a game when only the Linux build is installed, so allow the download to finish before judging the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the latest Proton choice does not help, return to the previous setting and test only another available tool when you have a specific reason to do so, such as a game update that changed compatibility. Keep notes about which version was used and whether the symptom changed. Do not infer a general success rate from one title or from another owner’s result: Proton compatibility can differ between games, patches, launchers, anti-cheat systems, and tool versions.
Follow the symptom instead of changing everything
The game remains at “Preparing to Launch”
First install SteamOS updates and restart, then verify the game files. Close non-essential applications and confirm the title’s operating-system and hardware requirements. If it is a Windows title or its current configuration is suspect, test the per-game Proton setting described above. These are general Steam support steps, not a diagnosis of every Deck launch failure. Valve’s checklist is documented under “Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’”.
The title crashes immediately
Record whether any launcher or anti-cheat message appears. Check the Store-page compatibility details and requirements, verify files, and test Proton one version at a time. If other games work, prioritize this title’s files, requirements, and per-game configuration; that is a practical way to narrow the fault, not a guaranteed causal rule.
The game launches but performance is poor
After confirming that the title starts correctly, lower the global graphics preset or individual settings such as resolution, shadows, textures, or effects. Valve specifically suggests lowering the graphics preset or individual settings for performance symptoms. Change one setting group at a time so you can identify which adjustment matters.

Steam reports that the game is unavailable on the current platform
Read the supported operating systems and hardware on the Store page. The message means the title does not support the current operating system according to Steam’s explanation. A Proton change may not address a hard platform restriction, and repeatedly reinstalling the same files will not alter the publisher’s stated requirements.
Login, download, or connection errors appear
Use network checks only when the symptom depends on Steam connectivity. Check Steam’s service status, then try another available Wi-Fi band on your router or access point. A service outage or a problem with one band can block login or downloads while leaving locally installed offline games unaffected. Valve’s network instructions are in Steam Hardware – Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting.
Do not use a network diagnosis to explain a game that crashes before it reaches online services, and do not interpret a successful connection test as proof that local files or Proton are correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. One game versus a system-wide problem
| Scope | Order of attention | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| One title only | Compatibility details → requirements → file verification → per-game Proton test | These controls are specific to the title and are less disruptive than system recovery. |
| Many titles fail, Steam menus misbehave, or Desktop Mode is unstable | SteamOS update → restart → third-party application isolation → SteamOS support and recovery options | A shared system component or background application is more plausible than one game’s files. |
| Only online actions fail | Steam status → another Wi-Fi band → local network troubleshooting | The symptom depends on connectivity rather than the game’s local rendering path. |
This scope-based approach is a diagnostic inference from Valve’s separate per-game and Deck-wide guidance. It helps choose the next low-risk test, but it does not prove the cause.
Non-Steam applications need a different path
The Proton selector described above applies to games installed through your Steam library. A non-Steam application may use a compatibility tool configured elsewhere, or may not be designed for SteamOS at all. Start by confirming how the application was installed, whether its publisher lists Linux or SteamOS support, and whether the failure is local or network-dependent. Avoid applying a Steam-library fix blindly to a shortcut that does not use the same installation and compatibility settings.

- Protect your private files with included SanDisk SecureAccess software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Mac OS X v10.6+ (Software download required for Mac, see official SanDisk Secure Access website for more details.))
- Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)
If the Deck itself is unstable regardless of application, return to the Deck-wide update, restart, and third-party-app isolation steps. Keep system recovery separate from an experiment on one non-Steam program.
When to use SteamOS repair or re-imaging
Recovery is appropriate only after ordinary updates, restart, application isolation, file checks, requirements checks, and game-level compatibility tests have failed—or when several parts of SteamOS are demonstrably unstable. It is not a routine fix for one title marked Unsupported.
| Recovery choice | Effect on data | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| SteamOS rollback | Returns to an earlier SteamOS state; the exact effect depends on the rollback path shown by Steam. | A recent SteamOS change appears to have introduced a system-wide regression and rollback is offered. |
| Repair SteamOS | Reinstalls the operating system while attempting to preserve games and personal content. | SteamOS components appear damaged, but preserving local content is important. |
| Factory reset / erase local data | Clears local data. | You have backed up important files and need a clean local state. |
| Re-image | Wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems on the device. | A full rebuild is justified after less destructive options fail. |
Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair guide explains the available choices and their effects. Creating recovery media requires a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Back up saves, screenshots, documents, configuration files, and any other local data before using a destructive option; cloud synchronization is not a substitute for checking that every important file has actually uploaded.
- Confirm that a game-specific problem is not being mistaken for a SteamOS problem.
- Back up local data and record your current SteamOS and game settings.
- Read the recovery option’s stated data effect before selecting it.
- Use Repair SteamOS first when the goal is to preserve games and personal content and the option is available.
- Use factory reset or re-imaging only when you accept the stated data loss and have recovery media ready.
If symptoms point to a separate physical fault rather than software, use Steam’s Steam Deck support wizard to reach the appropriate support path. Hardware repair is a different problem from a single game’s compatibility rating.
How to keep troubleshooting reversible
- Photograph or write down the original compatibility and graphics settings.
- Change one setting, launch once, and record the exact result.
- Return to the prior Proton tool before testing another, unless the first test clearly changed the failure.
- Keep network tests tied to login, download, or connection symptoms.
- Do not delete local data until backups are verified and the recovery choice is understood.
- Stop treating a rating as a diagnosis: Verified can still encounter damaged files, Playable can need configuration, Unsupported can change after updates, and Unknown means untested information.
What official evidence does—and does not—say
Valve’s support pages provide troubleshooting actions and compatibility definitions, but they do not provide a named, dated statistic for the percentage of Steam Deck games that launch successfully or the frequency of launch failures. There is therefore no defensible universal success rate to use when deciding whether your title “should” work.
The practical answer is narrower and more useful: identify the failure, read the rating details, update and restart, isolate third-party applications, check files and requirements, test Proton for a Steam library game, follow the network branch only for network symptoms, and reserve recovery actions for system-wide problems or failed software repair.
