Start by protecting a known-good save, recording what changed, and testing Creations one at a time. An update may be the trigger, but Bethesda’s Starfield guidance does not establish that a particular patch made a specific Creation incompatible. Treat the timing as a hypothesis. Isolate the Creation or load-order change first, then use the repair path for your platform.
Bethesda Support says Creations can cause in-game issues and recommends disabling or removing them when crashes persist. The safest recovery sequence moves from reversible changes—disabling one Creation—to broader actions such as repairing files, reinstalling, or clearing downloaded content.

What an update can—and cannot—prove
A crash that appears immediately after a Starfield update has several possible explanations: a Creation changed, a load order was altered, a game file became damaged, the Creations service is unavailable, or a save already contains a problem that the new game build exposes. The date of the update alone does not identify the cause.

Bethesda has a separate support statement for Skyrim explaining that a game update may require mod creators to release updates. That is a general possibility, not proof that any Starfield Creation is incompatible with a particular Starfield patch. For Starfield, identify the Creation name and installed version before saying that its author needs to update it.

This distinction matters because removing the wrong item can make a save harder to load, while blaming the game update can hide a duplicate file, a damaged installation, or a platform-specific problem.
Protect your save and document the failure
- Keep a recovery copy. Preserve an unmodded or earlier save if one exists. Do not overwrite your only working save while testing. Bethesda Support warns that a corrupted save cannot be repaired, so treat the original as evidence and a fallback, not as a disposable test file.
- Write down the environment. Record whether you play on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation; the Starfield version shown by the game or platform; and whether the game is installed on an SSD when using PC. Note graphics-driver changes, a recent reinstall, and any platform update.
- List the last changes. Record every Creation installed, removed, updated, or moved since the last successful session. Include the exact displayed filename where the interface shows one. This is especially useful when two entries have similar names.
- Describe the trigger precisely. Mark whether the crash occurs at startup, while loading a save, when entering a particular area, when opening Creations, after changing load order, or only after playing for a while. A repeatable trigger is more valuable than a general report that “mods broke.”
Do not begin by deleting every Creation or clearing storage. Those actions can remove downloaded content and erase the information needed to identify the offending change.
Classify the symptom before changing the game

Change one variable whenever practical. If you disable five Creations and the crash disappears, you know only that one of those five—or their interaction—was involved. A one-at-a-time test takes longer but produces an actionable result.

1. Use the in-game Creations or Load Order menu
If Starfield reaches its menus, open the Creations or Load Order interface and disable the Creation most recently installed or changed. Save the order if the interface allows it, restart the game, and reproduce the same action that previously crashed. Disabling is preferable to deleting because it preserves the installed entry for later comparison.
If the suspected item cannot be disabled, remove it from the Library only after confirming that you have a recovery save. Record its name and displayed version first. Do not remove a core dependency while leaving a dependent Creation active; if the interface identifies dependencies, note them before making the change.

2. Test a controlled sequence
- Start with all recently changed Creations disabled.
- Launch the game and test the same save or location.
- If the crash stops, re-enable one Creation at a time and restart between tests.
- When the crash returns, disable the last item again and repeat the test to confirm the result.
- If no single item reproduces the problem, test combinations that share a function, such as interface, world, quest, or settlement changes. Record the order and result.
This procedure is editorial troubleshooting practice rather than a universal Bethesda conflict-resolution rule. Some conflicts are interactions between otherwise functional Creations, so a clean result with each item alone does not prove that the full set is compatible.
3. Compare a new game with the affected save
If a new game reaches play normally while one existing save crashes, the diagnosis is different from a startup failure. The save may contain a damaged state or reference content that is no longer available. Keep the original save untouched, test the new game only as a diagnostic, and do not assume that reinstalling will repair corrupted save data.

Bethesda’s load-order guidance specifically calls out duplicate Creation filenames and outdated versions when changes cannot be saved. Inspect the installed list for two entries that expose the same filename, including entries that look different in the menu but use an identical file name.
When the interface presents file types, Bethesda specifies this order from higher to lower priority: ESM, then ESL, then ESP. Apply that documented ordering when arranging the list, but do not treat it as proof that any particular pair of Creations is compatible. The rule describes file-type placement; it does not resolve every record conflict, dependency problem, or script interaction.
- Update a Creation when the author has published a newer version for your installed Starfield build.
- Remove or disable a duplicate filename only after recording which entry your save used.
- Save the order, restart Starfield, and verify that the order persisted.
- If the order still will not save, stop changing entries randomly and move to the platform repair steps below.
There is no single official sequence that resolves every Starfield mod list. A load order that saves successfully can still contain a gameplay conflict, so continue with a controlled reproduction test.

Platform-specific recovery paths

PC: repair without losing the diagnostic trail
- Confirm that the computer meets Starfield’s current minimum requirements and that the game is installed on an SSD, as Bethesda’s crash guidance recommends.
- Review the graphics processor, driver state, and overlays. Temporarily disable overlays that inject into the game while testing, then retest the same failure.
- Disable or remove Creations and any other added mods. Keep your written list so you can restore items one at a time.
- Use your PC storefront’s file-repair or verify function. The goal is to replace missing or damaged base files without changing your test conditions unnecessarily.
- If Bethesda’s mod-removal procedure applies, uninstall and reinstall Starfield after removing the mods, then repair the files again. Reinstalling is a broad intervention; use it after the reversible isolation steps unless the installation itself is clearly damaged.
Do not delete a local catalog file as a first response to an ordinary gameplay crash. That file is part of the separate Creations-menu recovery procedure described below.

First remove or disable the suspected Creations through the available interface and test again. If crashes continue, Bethesda’s Xbox guidance includes clearing reserved space. This operation removes downloaded Creations from the console’s reserved storage; it is not the same as disabling one item. Confirm that you can redownload the content and that you have preserved any save you need before proceeding.
PlayStation: do not substitute another platform’s file steps
PlayStation recovery follows a different path from PC and Xbox. If the Creations menu cannot be restored through the normal interface, Bethesda’s cited guidance uses a reinstall step. Do not look for a PC ContentCatalog.txt path or an Xbox reserved-space setting on PlayStation; those instructions do not transfer between platforms.
When the Creations menu hangs
A frozen or endlessly loading Creations menu is a distinct problem from a Creation that crashes gameplay. Bethesda advises waiting several minutes first in case the service or connection is slow. If the menu becomes available, disable the most recently changed Creations and test again.
PC catalog recovery
- Before deleting anything, make a copy of
ContentCatalog.txtif you want to retain a record of the current catalog. - Follow Bethesda’s PC instruction to delete the catalog file.
- Restart Starfield and allow the Creations catalog to rebuild or resynchronize.
- Reinstall or re-enable Creations cautiously, testing the game after each meaningful change.
Keeping the copy is optional for recovery, but it preserves a record that may help you identify what changed. Deleting the file is intended for the stuck-menu case, not as a general fix for every crash.

Console menu recovery
Xbox and PlayStation use different recovery actions. Xbox steps can include removing downloaded content through reserved-space management; PlayStation guidance can require reinstalling the game when the normal menu cannot be recovered. Because these operations differ in both procedure and data impact, use the instructions for the console you actually own.

If only one save crashes, test another character or a new game. If every save fails at startup, concentrate on Creations, installation files, drivers, overlays, and platform recovery. If one save fails while others work, preserve it and avoid repeatedly saving over it.
Bethesda’s save-troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the game, power cycling the platform, removing Creations, reinstalling, and launching offline. Use these in increasing order of disruption:
- Restart Starfield and retry the same save.
- Power cycle the PC or console, then test without changing several other variables.
- Remove or disable Creations and try the save again.
- Launch offline when connection-dependent menu behavior is suspected.
- Reinstall only after the less destructive steps have failed.
Offline launching can help distinguish a connection or catalog problem from a local gameplay failure, but it does not repair a corrupted save. Bethesda states that a corrupted save cannot be repaired.
Read the result of each test

Keep a short log with the Creation state, save used, location, and outcome. It prevents circular testing and gives a creator or platform support team a reproducible report without claiming a cause that has not been demonstrated.
How to handle a suspected post-update incompatibility
Use precise language in your notes: “The crash began after the update and stopped when Creation X was disabled.” That is a useful observation. “The update broke Creation X” is a stronger claim that requires a source identifying the Starfield build, the Creation version, and the incompatibility.
Check the Creation’s displayed version and the creator’s current release information before reinstalling it. If no Starfield-specific compatibility notice exists, leave the item disabled while you test the rest of the list. Do not substitute a Skyrim compatibility warning for Starfield evidence.
If several Creations were updated at once, restore them individually. A broad rollback may hide which component caused the failure and can create new missing-content references in a save.

- Keep at least one recent save made with Creations disabled or with a known-good set.
- Record Creation names, filenames, versions, and load order before a major game update.
- After an update, launch with the smallest practical set and verify a test save before loading your primary character.
- Change one Creation at a time and keep a backup of the previous working order.
- Do not clear reserved space or delete catalog files unless the symptom matches the documented recovery case.
- When reporting a crash, include platform, game version, Creation versions, trigger, save behavior, and the result of disabling each recent change.
These habits do not guarantee that every Creation will remain compatible, but they preserve a path back to a working game and make the actual trigger easier to identify.
What Bethesda’s guidance establishes
Bethesda Support explicitly states that “Creations can cause in-game issues, in some cases.” Its Starfield instructions support disabling or removing Creations, repairing PC files, and using platform-specific recovery actions. The same material identifies duplicate filenames and outdated Creations as load-order concerns and warns that clearing Xbox reserved space removes downloaded content.
It does not publish a universal conflict-resolution order for every mod list, a Starfield-wide list of Creations broken by a named update, a crash-rate statistic, or a guarantee that reinstalling will rescue a corrupted save. Keep those limits in mind when interpreting both your own tests and reports from other players.
