What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your OpenWrt Wi-Fi is slow or keeps dropping, first work out whether the problem is the wireless link, the router’s path to the internet, or latency that appears only when the network is busy. Compare repeatable tests before changing settings: a wider channel or a factory reset can make diagnosis harder without fixing the cause.
Identify what is actually failing
“Slow Wi-Fi” can describe several different problems. Note what happens during a slowdown or drop:

- The client disconnects from the SSID: investigate the wireless link, signal conditions, client behavior, and router logs.
- The client stays connected but loses access to the router or other local devices: focus on the local Wi-Fi or network configuration.
- Local access works, but internet access slows or disappears: check the WAN connection and any upstream router as well as Wi-Fi.
- Everything still works, but responsiveness worsens during uploads or downloads: test for latency under load before considering SQM.
Record the affected client, band, location, time, and whether someone is using the connection heavily. Repeat the test with one client near the access point and a second device. A Wi-Fi link rate is not the same as usable throughput: devices share airtime, and distance, walls, interference, and other network users affect performance. OpenWrt’s overview of network components explains these factors.
Compare Wi-Fi, wired, quiet, and busy conditions
Use the same measurement method and, where possible, the same test service for comparisons. Run a speed and latency test while the network is quiet, then repeat during the slowdown. If practical, compare a wired client with Wi-Fi at the same time. A single speed-test result cannot by itself tell you whether the bottleneck is the radio, router CPU, WAN, or test server; OpenWrt’s SQM guidance recommends establishing baseline speed and latency and suggests trying more than one speed-test application when appropriate.

| Comparison | What it can help isolate |
|---|---|
| Wired versus Wi-Fi, at the same time and location | The wireless path versus a router or WAN bottleneck |
| Quiet network versus heavy traffic | Latency or throughput problems associated with saturation |
| 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz, on the same client near the access point | Band-specific interference or a range-related trade-off |
| One client versus several | A client-specific issue versus a problem affecting multiple devices |
| OpenWrt path versus a direct upstream test | The OpenWrt Wi-Fi segment versus upstream equipment |
If OpenWrt is operating as an access point, extender, repeater, or bridge, test the upstream router separately. The OpenWrt connectivity troubleshooting guidance distinguishes local connectivity from internet access and discusses checking upstream equipment in these setups.
Check signal and channel settings before increasing channel width
Test near the access point, then at the usual problem location. Walls, distance, neighboring networks, and multiple clients sharing a radio can all affect usable speed and reliability. If you change a setting, change one at a time and repeat the same comparison.

Start with a stable 2.4 GHz channel width
On 2.4 GHz, start with a 20 MHz channel width rather than assuming 40 MHz will be faster. Wider channels may offer more theoretical throughput but occupy more spectrum and are more exposed to interference. OpenWrt generally advises against HT40 on 2.4 GHz; see its wireless configuration guidance. Test a less congested channel only if it is permitted by the device and the regulatory rules for your location.

Use the correct country and allow for 5 GHz startup checks
Set the country code to the router’s actual location and choose only channels permitted there. Incorrect regulatory settings can violate local rules; OpenWrt covers this in its Wi-Fi security and setup guidance. On 5 GHz, the radio may take time to become available while it performs radar or weather-channel checks. OpenWrt’s connectivity troubleshooting guide notes that this wait can be 1–10 minutes in applicable cases.

Test for specific sources of interference and client-side problems
USB 3.0 storage connected to the router
If a USB 3.0 storage device is attached to the OpenWrt router and affected clients use 2.4 GHz, disconnect the storage device temporarily and repeat the test. OpenWrt documents USB-related interference that can cause timeouts, stalls, or interrupted transfers, along with workarounds such as using 5 GHz for affected clients or a USB 2.0 drive enclosure: USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi problems. These steps are relevant to this specific setup, not general Wi-Fi upgrades.
Periodic drops or slowdowns on one desktop
If the symptom is periodic and appears on a desktop but not other devices, compare clients before changing access-point settings. OpenWrt’s wireless throughput FAQ identifies background network scanning by a desktop network manager as one possible cause of periodic throughput dips. Check the affected computer’s network-manager settings and logs as appropriate.

Use logs and configuration checks for intermittent failures
When a connection fails intermittently, inspect OpenWrt’s system log with logread around the time of the failure, then check wireless status and configuration. Confirm that the Wi-Fi network is attached to the intended network interface. OpenWrt’s connectivity troubleshooting guide provides a starting point for local and internet connectivity checks. Avoid a factory reset as the first diagnostic step: it removes configuration without identifying whether the fault is the radio, client, WAN, or upstream router.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If web pages, calls, or games become sluggish mainly while uploads or downloads are saturating the connection, compare latency when idle with latency during that traffic. That pattern can indicate bufferbloat: excess queuing delay when a router buffers too much data. OpenWrt describes SQM as a way to mitigate it: “OpenWrt supports SQM for mitigating bufferbloat, the undesirable latency that arises when your router buffers too much data.” (OpenWrt Wiki, SQM.)

SQM shapes and schedules traffic, but it is not a general fix for weak signal, radio interference, a client driver problem, or a failing radio. It requires enough router CPU and can reduce peak throughput. OpenWrt states that SQM is incompatible with hardware flow offloading, so check the firewall offload configuration if you enable SQM.
Handle roaming as a separate multi-access-point problem
If the network has multiple access points, a client that clings to a distant AP or roams poorly calls for a roaming and network-design review, not a generic speed tweak. OpenWrt documents DAWN for decentralized band steering and describes 802.11k/v prerequisites in its DAWN and band-steering guide. Those options are relevant to multi-AP deployments; they are not a default fix for a single access point.
