Run a provider-app speed test that separates device-to-router performance from router-to-internet performance if available, then check service alerts, plan data, weather, and equipment in that order. This prevents a Wi-Fi adjustment from being mistaken for a fix to an outage or dish problem.
First, work out whether the fault is Wi-Fi or the satellite link
A single slow test on one device cannot identify the cause. If your provider app offers separate results for the connection between your device and router and between the router and internet, use both. Starlink recommends its app’s Advanced Speed Test for this distinction (Starlink: Slow Speeds).

- Device-to-router performance is weak: Start with the home Wi-Fi, the device, and its distance from the router.
- Router-to-internet performance is weak: Look for service alerts, account or plan limits, weather, obstructions, or equipment issues.
- Only one device is affected: Compare it with another device in the same location before changing the satellite equipment.
For a useful comparison, pause other household internet use and run the test again. Viasat notes that multiple users, device updates, router placement, congestion, malware, and equipment restarts can all affect observed performance (Viasat: Slow Internet). Test at different times if the issue comes and goes.
Check for outages and account limits
Look for provider alerts first
Check your provider’s app, account page, or outage resources before changing settings. A provider outage can resemble a home equipment failure, and restarting or reconfiguring equipment will not resolve a network-side issue. Viasat lists outages and home equipment problems among possible causes of no connection and directs customers to outage information (Viasat: No Connection).

Review your data allowance and plan conditions
Sign in to your account and check whether your plan’s high-speed data allowance has been used. Viasat advises checking allowance status when speeds are slow. Hughesnet says that after plan data is exceeded, a customer may stay connected but experience slower speeds during high-traffic periods until the next billing cycle (Hughesnet: Internet Troubleshooting). The effect depends on the provider and plan; do not assume that every satellite plan slows in the same way or by the same amount.
Compare the problem with weather and time of day
Severe thunderstorms and heavy snow or ice can temporarily disrupt a satellite connection. Weather near a distant satellite gateway can also matter, even when the sky above your home is clear. Viasat says weather-related outages typically restore without customer action (Viasat: No Connection; Viasat: Weather and Internet Service).

Note when interruptions begin and end, what the weather is like locally, and whether your provider app reports an issue. If the connection returns as conditions improve, avoid realigning or replacing equipment based only on that temporary event. If poor performance also occurs in clear weather or persists well beyond the weather event, continue through the equipment and support checks.

Check the dish, power, and connections safely
- Read the provider app’s alerts and status messages. Follow provider-specific installation and obstruction guidance; Starlink’s intermittent-service checklist includes app alerts, installation, obstructions, and environmental conditions (Starlink: Intermittent Service).
- Look for changes to the dish’s view of the sky. Trees and other objects can interrupt line of sight, according to Hughesnet (Hughesnet: Internet Troubleshooting).
- Confirm power and accessible cable connections. Check that equipment is powered and that connections you can safely reach are seated. Starlink includes physical cable checks in its intermittent-service guidance (Starlink: Intermittent Service).
Do not climb onto a roof or move an installed dish if doing so is unsafe. For installation questions or equipment that cannot be safely inspected, contact your provider or a qualified technician.

Improve Wi-Fi only if the satellite connection is healthy
If the router-to-internet result is acceptable but device-to-router performance is weak, focus on wireless coverage. Starlink recommends placing the router centrally in an open location, away from walls, metal, and sources of interference; it also suggests distributing devices across Wi-Fi bands and disconnecting devices that are not in use (Starlink: Slow Speeds).
In a large home or one with thick walls, mesh nodes or an extender may help reach rooms with weak Wi-Fi. That is a conditional remedy for in-home wireless coverage, not for a blocked dish view, bad weather, an account slowdown, or a provider outage. Check compatibility and setup guidance for your own router and service before adding equipment.

Keep a short record, then contact support if the fault persists
If the checks do not identify or resolve the issue, gather details before opening a support request. Starlink advises monitoring patterns such as time of day, weather, and Wi-Fi setup and recording them for support (Starlink: Intermittent Service; Starlink: Slow Speeds).

- Relevant weather and any alerts shown in the provider app.
- Whether other household internet use was paused during testing.
- Checks already made to Wi-Fi placement, power, and accessible connections.
Use your provider’s current support route and account instructions. Procedures can differ by provider, equipment generation, plan, and location.
