How to Troubleshoot Slow or Dropping Starlink Internet

Start in the Starlink app, not by buying new hardware. Check alerts and outage history, then determine whether the problem affects one device or every device. A single-device problem usually points to Wi‑Fi, a VPN, the device itself, or an Ethernet link; an all-device problem calls for checks of the dish view, Starlink cables, router, weather, congestion, and any added network equipment.

Work through the comparisons in this guide in order. They isolate the failing part without treating an obstruction, weak Wi‑Fi signal, peak-period congestion, and a service outage as the same problem.

1. Check Starlink alerts and record the pattern

Open the Starlink app and review its current alerts and outage history before changing settings. Follow any instruction attached to an alert. Write down when the slowdown or drop occurs, how long it lasts, and what is happening at the time. Useful observations include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the issue is continuous or appears as short interruptions.
  • The approximate time of day and whether it repeats during busy periods.
  • Whether rain, snow, heavy cloud, or another weather event is present.
  • Whether one device, several devices, or every device loses service.
  • Whether the problem occurs only in one room or only when a VPN or other network service is active.

Patterns matter because a single speed test can coincide with a temporary outage, weather event, or congested period. Keep the app’s outage history alongside your notes so you can distinguish a recurring local problem from a Starlink-side event.

2. Separate a one-device fault from an all-device fault

Use two or more devices to make the first important split. For example, compare a phone near the router with a laptop in its normal location. If every device is slow or drops at the same time, continue with the Starlink, dish, router, cable, and network-equipment checks below. If only one device is affected, begin with that device’s connection rather than relocating the dish.

When only one device is slow

  • Move the device close to the Starlink router and test again.
  • Check whether it is using Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
  • Note the Wi‑Fi band and compare it with another device in the same place.
  • Temporarily turn off its VPN for a comparison, if that is practical and safe for your use.
  • Restart the device and retest before changing the Starlink installation.

When every device is slow or dropping

Reboot the Starlink router as directed by the app or the hardware guide, then test again. If the symptom remains on multiple devices, use the app’s obstruction scan, inspect the dish and cables, isolate third-party equipment, and account for weather and network demand.

3. Reboot correctly and read the router indicator

Use the Starlink app’s reboot instruction for your hardware rather than repeatedly unplugging equipment at random. A controlled reboot gives the dish and router time to reconnect and leaves a clear point in your notes. After it finishes, test the same device in the same location so the comparison is meaningful.

Router lights are model-specific. In Starlink’s Gen 3 Router Setup Guide (Standard Actuated), a red light means the router is not connected to the internet, a solid white light means it is connected, and no light means the router has no power. Do not apply those meanings to another generation or model without checking its guide. Confirm that the power supply and connections match the hardware you actually own.

4. Troubleshoot one slow Wi‑Fi device

Test close to the router

Stand near the Starlink router and run the same test that was slow in the usual location. A large improvement near the router indicates a local Wi‑Fi coverage or interference issue rather than proof that the satellite link is slow. If performance is still poor beside the router while other devices also struggle, return to the all-device path.

Compare the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands

Starlink describes 2.4 GHz as the longer-range band and 5 GHz as the faster band at short range. Near the router, test the device on 5 GHz. At a greater distance, 2.4 GHz may remain connected where 5 GHz does not, but its lower throughput can make a speed test look slower.

If your router presents a single combined network name, use the Starlink app’s Wi‑Fi settings to split the bands when that option is available. Connect the test device to 5 GHz near the router, reboot the router if the app requests it, and repeat the test. Record the band used with each result; otherwise you may compare two different radio links without realizing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check VPN and device-specific software

Turn off the device’s VPN briefly for a comparison if your security policy permits it. A VPN can add a separate path and encryption overhead, so a result that improves only when the VPN is off points to that path or its endpoint, not automatically to Starlink. If you cannot disable the VPN, compare with another device that has no VPN enabled.

Also compare the same service on another browser or application and restart the affected device. These checks do not prove a Starlink fault; they establish whether the symptom follows the device or the internet connection.

5. Troubleshoot an Ethernet-connected device

Find the category printed on the Ethernet cable. Starlink recommends Cat5e or higher; a cable below Cat5e may limit speeds. A Cat5e cable is relevant only when the slow device is actually wired, and replacing it cannot fix congestion, an obstructed dish, weak Wi‑Fi, or a Starlink outage.

With the equipment powered down as directed, reseat the cable at both ends and inspect it for cuts, crushed sections, sharply bent areas, or loose plugs. Test a known-good Cat5e-or-higher cable if you have one, then repeat the same speed test. If the wired device is fast while Wi‑Fi devices are slow, investigate wireless placement and bands rather than the satellite service.

6. Use the Starlink app’s Advanced Speed Test

Where the feature is available, open the Starlink app and run Advanced Speed Test. It compares three paths:

Result What it measures How to use it
Router → Internet The connection from the Starlink router toward the internet. A low result here with a good device-to-router result points toward the Starlink connection, congestion, an outage, or another upstream condition.
Device → Router The local link between the test device and the Starlink router. A low result here points toward Wi‑Fi range or band, interference, the device, or a local Ethernet cable.
Device → Internet The end-to-end result experienced by the device. Compare it with the two component results instead of treating it as a diagnosis by itself.

Run comparable tests from the same location and, when possible, at different times. With a third-party router connected, Starlink advises connecting a computer by Ethernet directly to the Starlink power supply or bypassing the added router for a more accurate test. That bypass is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent requirement.

7. Check the dish’s sky view for obstructions

In the Starlink app, open Check for Obstructions and scan the dish’s view of the sky. Trees, buildings, poles, debris, material buildup, and snow can interrupt visibility and produce repeated drops. The app’s result is more useful than guessing from the dish’s apparent position from the ground.

What to do when an obstruction is confirmed

  1. Use the obstruction result to identify a location with a clearer view.
  2. Consider relocating the dish only when the proposed location is suitable for the hardware and cable route.
  3. If raising the dish is necessary, use an appropriate mount that fits the model.
  4. Clear snow, debris, or vegetation only when you can do so safely without climbing or working near electrical hazards.
  5. After any change, run the obstruction tool again and monitor whether the interruptions follow the same pattern.

Starlink’s obstruction guidance says the simplest fix is to use the app’s tool to find an unobstructed location and relocate the Starlink. Do not attempt an unsafe roof, pole, or tree installation. If clearing or relocation cannot be done safely, use a qualified professional.

They provide the necessary bandwidth and reliability for transmitting high-quality video feeds over long distances.
  • Cat5e 1000-foot (305-meter) bulk easy pull box, color white

8. Inspect cables, ports, and power connections

Unplug the equipment before inspecting or reseating connections. Look for nicks, cuts, exposed conductors, crushed or hard-bent sections, weather damage, and loose plugs. Check both ends of every cable, the power supply, adapters, and any extension or coupler. Inspect ports for dirt or debris and do not force a connector.

Starlink recommends official cables for compatibility. If a cable is visibly damaged or a connection remains unreliable after reseating, document the model and cable arrangement and contact support about the correct replacement. Do not assume a replacement intended for another Starlink model will fit; instructions can differ for Starlink Mini, so follow the guidance for your exact equipment.

9. Remove third-party routers, mesh nodes, and switches temporarily

Added networking equipment can introduce a bad cable, an overloaded node, a configuration conflict, or a weak wireless hop. Temporarily disconnect third-party routers, mesh nodes, and switches, then retest with the Starlink equipment in its basic configuration. Keep the test location and device constant.

Comparison Result Next step
Starlink equipment alone is still slow The added equipment is unlikely to be the only cause. Continue with obstruction, cable, weather, congestion, and support checks.
Starlink equipment alone improves The added router, mesh, switch, cable, or its settings is implicated. Reconnect one item at a time and test each change; review its placement, firmware, and configuration.

For a third-party router setup, use the Advanced Speed Test and, where practical, the direct Ethernet comparison described earlier. Do not draw a conclusion from a test taken through several wireless hops.

10. Account for weather, time of day, and plan conditions

Weather can coincide with brief drops, and Starlink says speeds may temporarily decrease during peak network periods. Starlink also notes that Roam service may be slower in congested areas. These are conditions to compare, not automatic explanations for every slow result.

Make a useful time comparison

  1. Run the same test near the router and, if possible, over Ethernet.
  2. Repeat it during the busy period when the issue normally appears.
  3. Repeat it during a quieter period and note the weather.
  4. Compare the app’s outage history with your timestamps.

If only peak-period tests are low while local device-to-router results remain strong, local demand or plan priority is more plausible than a damaged cable. If drops occur during particular weather and the obstruction scan is clear, include that pattern in your support ticket rather than changing hardware immediately.

11. Use a symptom-to-check decision table

Observed symptom First comparison Likely branch
Only one device is slow Move it beside the router; compare VPN on/off and Wi‑Fi band. Device, Wi‑Fi, VPN, or local Ethernet.
All devices slow at once Check alerts, outage history, and router status. Starlink service, dish, router, cable, weather, congestion, or added equipment.
Wi‑Fi slow but wired device is good Compare 5 GHz near the router with the normal location. Coverage, band, interference, or mesh placement.
Wired device is slow Check the cable marking and test Cat5e or higher. Ethernet cable, port, third-party gear, or upstream connection.
Drops match an obstruction alert Run Check for Obstructions and inspect the view. Dish location, mount, or environmental blockage.
Performance improves when added gear is removed Reconnect equipment one piece at a time. Third-party router, mesh node, switch, cable, or configuration.
Only busy periods are slow Compare off-peak results and check plan conditions. Congestion or plan priority rather than a local hardware fault.

12. Avoid unsafe or premature hardware changes

Do not climb, cut vegetation, move a roof-mounted dish, or work around power connections merely because a speed test is low. First confirm the obstruction or cable fault with the app and a physical inspection. A compatible mount is relevant only after the obstruction tool identifies a blocked view and the installation can be completed safely. A replacement cable is relevant only when the existing cable is visibly damaged or a cable fault has been isolated; match the cable to the hardware model.

Likewise, a faster Ethernet cable cannot cure a satellite outage, peak congestion, or poor Wi‑Fi coverage. Keep each purchase tied to a confirmed branch of the diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Escalate to Starlink support with evidence

If alerts, controlled rebooting, device comparisons, speed-test paths, obstruction checks, cable inspection, and third-party isolation do not resolve the issue, submit a support ticket through the Starlink app. Give support a reproducible description rather than only saying “slow internet.” Include:

  • The dates and times of drops or slow periods, including weather and whether the pattern is peak-time only.
  • Whether one device or all devices are affected.
  • Whether the test used Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, the Wi‑Fi band, and whether a VPN was enabled.
  • Relevant Advanced Speed Test results for Router → Internet, Device → Router, and Device → Internet.
  • Whether performance changed when third-party routers, mesh nodes, or switches were disconnected.
  • The obstruction-tool result and any dish-location observations.
  • The Starlink hardware model, cable type or markings, and any visible damage.
  • Clear photos of the installation, cable routing, connections, and router placement.

Keep the ticket focused on one symptom pattern and attach the comparisons that demonstrate it. This gives support enough context to distinguish a service condition from a local installation or networking fault.

14. A compact troubleshooting checklist

  1. Open the Starlink app; read alerts and outage history.
  2. Record when the issue occurs and whether weather or busy periods are involved.
  3. Compare one device with another and decide whether the issue is local or universal.
  4. Reboot using the app or the correct hardware guide.
  5. For one Wi‑Fi device, test beside the router on 5 GHz and compare VPN status.
  6. For Ethernet, check the cable marking and use Cat5e or higher.
  7. Run Advanced Speed Test and compare the three paths when available.
  8. Run Check for Obstructions and inspect the dish view.
  9. With equipment unplugged, inspect cables, ports, adapters, and power connections.
  10. Disconnect third-party network equipment and retest.
  11. Compare peak and off-peak or clear-weather and bad-weather results.
  12. Send a support ticket with timestamps, results, and installation photos if the fault remains.
