If Skyrim DLC will not download or is missing on PS5, do not reinstall the game first. Confirm the PlayStation account and transaction, inspect the download queue, restore the license, and update Skyrim. Only then consider reinstalling—and only for the Creations or Anniversary-content situations Bethesda documents.
The symptom usually identifies the branch: a download that never starts points to the queue, storage, service, or account; a padlock or upgrade prompt points to ownership or license recognition; and a freeze at “Checking for add-ons” points to a missing title update.

These are different failure modes. An official add-on bought on the PlayStation Store is handled through the account, license, store download, and game update systems. A Creation activated from Skyrim’s in-game Creations menu follows a different path.

Identify exactly what you are trying to install
Write down the name shown in the Store or in Skyrim before troubleshooting. “Skyrim DLC” can mean one of the three official add-ons, the Anniversary Upgrade, the bundled Anniversary Edition, or a Creation downloaded from inside the game.
Official add-ons and Anniversary content
- Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn are the three named official add-ons associated with Skyrim’s Anniversary Edition listing.
- The US PlayStation Store lists Skyrim Special Edition for PS4 and PS5. Its US Anniversary Edition listing includes those three add-ons plus Creation Club content; the exact products and availability can differ by market and can change. Check your own region’s listing rather than assuming the US catalog applies to you. View the US PlayStation Store Skyrim listing.
- The Anniversary Upgrade is an add-on entitlement, not a separate full game. Bethesda says it cannot be uninstalled separately on PlayStation; removing selected Anniversary content can require uninstalling and reinstalling Skyrim, then choosing what to use. Bethesda’s Anniversary-content guidance explains that limitation.
Creations
Creations are downloaded through Skyrim Special Edition’s in-game Creations menu, not necessarily as a separate item you start from the console’s Store page. Bethesda’s installation instructions cover that in-game workflow. Open Bethesda’s Creations installation instructions.
If you activated a Creation and then the game became stuck, treat it as a Creations problem. Do not use the Creations-specific reinstall instruction merely because a Store add-on is absent.
The game edition matters
Look at the product name in Game Library and the Store. A profile that owns only the base Special Edition will not automatically grant another profile’s Anniversary Upgrade. Bethesda documents that a PlayStation profile can be prompted to upgrade when a different profile on the same console owns the Anniversary Edition. Read Bethesda’s explanation of the Anniversary prompt.
Bethesda also describes the next-generation game upgrade as free in its support documentation, but that statement does not replace ownership of an individually purchased add-on. Compare the content before troubleshooting

This comparison prevents a common mistake: searching the Store for a Creation as though it were Dawnguard, or expecting a profile that owns the base game to inherit a different profile’s upgrade. Take a screenshot of the product name and the account currently signed in before contacting support.
Check the purchasing account and transaction first
A missing download is often a recognition problem rather than a broken game installation. On PS5:

- Open the account currently signed in and confirm it is the PlayStation account that bought or claimed the game or add-on.
- Open the account’s transaction history and verify that the transaction completed. A pending, canceled, or failed transaction does not create a usable entitlement.
- If several profiles use the console, repeat the check on each profile that might have made the purchase. Ownership on one profile does not necessarily make an Anniversary prompt disappear on another profile.
- Return to the Store or Game Library while signed in to the verified purchasing account and look for a download option rather than a price or upgrade prompt.
PlayStation’s download troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking the purchasing account and transaction history before retrying a download. Use PlayStation’s download troubleshooting page.
Do not buy the same content again while the original transaction is still being investigated. A second purchase will not repair a stalled queue or a license that the console has failed to recognize.
Retry a stalled PS5 download safely
Use the queue controls before deleting the game. This sequence changes the download job, not your Skyrim save data.
- Press the PS button to open Control Center, then select Downloads/Uploads.
- Find the Skyrim add-on. If it is paused, select it and choose Resume. If it is actively stuck, pause it, wait briefly for the state to change, and resume it.
- If the entry remains stuck, select the download and choose the option to cancel and delete that queue item.
- Open Game Library, select Skyrim, and start the add-on download again from the game’s available add-ons or Store listing.
- Watch the queue for an error code or a change from queued to downloading. Record any code instead of repeatedly retrying without checking the cause.
While the queue is open, check three conditions PlayStation identifies as relevant: the service status page, current PS5 system software, and available storage. A full drive or an unavailable Store service can look like a DLC failure even when the entitlement is valid. Storage and system checks
Check free space before assuming the download is corrupted. If the console reports insufficient storage, remove or move another game only after confirming which content is safe to remove, then retry the Skyrim add-on. An interrupted queue can also be caused by a temporary PlayStation service problem, so check the service-status page before making repeated changes.
Install any pending PS5 system-software update as well. Store downloads depend on the console software and the account services communicating correctly; an outdated system can create a queue failure that is unrelated to Skyrim files. Retry after the update completes rather than launching Skyrim while the console is still applying it.
What to do when the download option is missing
If the Store shows a price, a padlock, or an upgrade prompt instead of a download button, stop queue troubleshooting and return to the account-and-transaction check. If the transaction is complete on the correct account, proceed to license restoration. If the transaction is absent, contact PlayStation about the purchase rather than reinstalling Skyrim.

Restore the Skyrim license on PS5
Restoring licenses makes the console recheck purchased games and add-ons. PlayStation lists a missing game or add-on as a reason to try it and states that restoring licenses does not affect your data.

- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose the relevant license and confirm.
After the process completes, return to Skyrim in Game Library and check the add-on again. If the content was purchased by another profile, restoring licenses while signed in to the wrong profile will not transfer ownership. Use the buying account for this check. Update Skyrim when it freezes while checking add-ons
A game that reaches “Checking for add-ons” or “Checking for Downloadable Content” is not exhibiting the same symptom as a Store download that never begins. Bethesda says this freeze can occur when DLC is installed on the console but Skyrim does not have its most recent title update. The guidance is written for consoles generally, not as a PS5-only defect. Read Bethesda’s support article about the add-on-check freeze.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet.
- Highlight Skyrim on the home screen or in Game Library and press the Options button.
- Choose Check for Update, if that option is available, and allow the title update to download and install.
- Start Skyrim only after the update has finished. If the game displays an update prompt, accept it rather than launching an older installed version.
- Test the game again and note whether it passes the add-on check.
Updating the title is the targeted remedy for this loading symptom. It is not a substitute for confirming that the add-on belongs to the signed-in account.
Handle Creations as a separate troubleshooting branch
Open Skyrim’s in-game Creations menu when the item was obtained there. The console Store’s download queue may not show every Creation in the same way it shows a purchased official add-on.

Bethesda documents a specific PS5/console scenario: Skyrim becomes stuck or will not start after many Creations have been activated. For that situation, Bethesda’s remedy is to uninstall and reinstall the entire game. Follow Bethesda’s stuck-after-Creations guidance.
This is an escalation, not the first response to an ordinary missing Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, or Anniversary download. Complete the account, transaction, queue, license, and update checks first. If the problem began immediately after enabling a large set of Creations, document which ones were active before removing the game.

If one Creation is missing but Skyrim still starts
Return to the Creations menu, verify that you are signed in to the account required by the Creation, and check whether it is downloaded or merely enabled in the menu. Avoid deleting the whole installation for a single missing item unless the game has entered the stuck-startup scenario Bethesda describes.
Keep official DLC and Creations separate in your notes. Write down whether the missing item has a Store transaction, appears in the in-game Creations list, or was part of the Anniversary content selection. That distinction tells support whether to investigate a PlayStation entitlement or a Bethesda game-content problem.

Reinstalling is disruptive and does not repair a missing purchase entitlement. Reserve it for the cases Bethesda ties to reinstalling:
- Skyrim is stuck or will not start after activating many Creations.
- You need to remove or change Anniversary content on PlayStation, because the Anniversary Upgrade cannot be uninstalled as an independent package.
- Support has directed you to reinstall after the account, license, queue, storage, service, and update checks have been completed.
- Before uninstalling, confirm the correct purchasing account and that the transaction is present.
- Note which edition and add-ons you own, and whether the problem involves official DLC or Creations.
- Uninstall Skyrim from the PS5 storage menu.
- Reinstall the base game from Game Library using the verified account.
- Install the current game update before testing add-ons.
- When Skyrim or the installation flow offers content choices, select the Anniversary content or Creations you actually intend to use.
Do not interpret a successful reinstall as proof that the original license was missing. If the same account or entitlement problem remains, the download can fail again after a clean installation.

Escalate with details support can use
If the add-on still will not download or appear, contact PlayStation Support after completing the checks above. Include:
- The exact add-on or Creation name and the Skyrim edition shown in Game Library.
- The PlayStation account that made the purchase and the transaction date or transaction entry.
- Whether the failure is a missing download button, a stalled queue, a padlock, an upgrade prompt, missing in-game content, or an add-on-check freeze.
- The exact error code or on-screen wording.
- The steps that reproduce the problem and the time it occurred.
- A screenshot or video if the behavior is visible.
PlayStation’s download support guidance asks for the error, reproduction steps, timing, and screenshot or video when escalating. Review the official escalation guidance.
If the evidence shows a Bethesda account, Creation, or game-startup issue rather than a Store transaction problem, use the relevant Bethesda support article linked above and describe the same symptom precisely. Separating the platform, edition, and content type gives support a much better chance of identifying the failed entitlement or installation stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Skyrim show an Anniversary Edition upgrade prompt when another profile bought it?
Bethesda says the prompt can appear when the signed-in PlayStation profile does not own the Anniversary Edition, even if another profile on the same console does. Sign in with the purchasing profile and verify its transaction before buying anything again.
Will restoring licenses delete my Skyrim saves?
No. PlayStation Support says restoring licenses does not affect your data. On PS5, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
What should I do if the Skyrim DLC download is stuck in the PS5 queue?
Open Downloads/Uploads, pause and resume the entry, then cancel and delete that queue item if it remains stuck. Retry from Game Library, and check PlayStation service status, system software, and free storage.

Are Creations downloaded the same way as Dawnguard or Dragonborn?
