If RimWorld became slow or started crashing after an update, first identify the exact branch and version, then separate an unmodded failure from a mod or save problem. In Ludeon Studios’ October 12, 2026 announcement, RimWorld 1.7 was on the unstable beta branch while the main branch remained on 1.6. That distinction matters: a problem on 1.7 unstable is not evidence that every 1.6 installation has the same regression.
Reproduce the problem once, save the resulting Player.log before launching again, and record a named mod list plus the exact steps that trigger the failure. Those details are more useful than saying only that the game is “broken after the update.”

Start by identifying the build you actually installed
Open Steam and check whether RimWorld is on the main branch or an unstable beta branch. Record the complete version number shown by the game or Steam, your operating system, and whether the issue appeared immediately after switching branches, after a normal update, or after changing mods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLudeon’s October 12, 2026 announcement describes version 1.7 as available through Steam’s unstable beta branch. At that time, the main branch used by most players was still version 1.6. Branch availability can change, so treat this as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent rule.

| What to record | Why it changes the diagnosis |
|---|---|
| Exact RimWorld version | A fix or regression may exist only in one patch. |
| Main or unstable beta branch | Unstable builds are intended for testing and can behave differently from the main release. |
| Operating system | Log locations and startup failures differ between Windows, macOS and Linux. |
| Modded or unmodded launch | A crash that disappears without mods requires a different investigation from a vanilla crash. |
| Save origin | A save created on another version or with another mod set may fail at loading even when a new game works. |
Do not infer a cause from timing alone
An update, a mod update and a save change can happen on the same day. That coincidence does not identify the culprit. Keep the original state, record what changed, and test one variable at a time where practical.
Classify the failure before changing anything
Write down the stage at which the problem occurs. This gives support volunteers a reproducible case instead of a general performance complaint.
| Failure stage | Useful observations | Evidence to capture |
|---|---|---|
| Startup or black screen | Does the process close, hang, or remain on a black window? Does it happen with a new launch every time? | Version, operating system, launch state and the log from that attempt. |
| Save loading | Does a new colony load while one existing save fails? Was the save created on another branch? | Save origin, mod list at save creation and current log. |
| Map or world generation | Does generation stop at a repeatable percentage or seed? Does a different seed work? | Seed, map settings, branch, mods and the log. |
| In-game crash | What action occurred immediately before the crash, and does it happen on the same pawn, bill, map or interface? | Save, exact reproduction steps, mod list and log after reproducing. |
| Late-game slowdown | Is the problem low ticks-per-second, long pauses, slow rendering, or delayed input? Does it occur in a new colony? | Colony age or population, map count, mod list, version and whether the slowdown is repeatable. |
Preserve Player.log and the circumstances
Reproduce the crash or slowdown once, close the game only if it has not already closed, and copy the log before launching RimWorld again. A later launch can overwrite the evidence from the failed run.

What to write down with the log
- The exact version and branch.
- Your operating system.
- Whether the installation is vanilla or modded.
- The save name or a description of a new-game test.
- What you were doing, what happened, and what you expected to happen.
- Whether the issue happens every time or only intermittently.
- The complete mod list, using readable names rather than only Workshop IDs.
Ludeon’s mod-bug guidance specifically asks for the circumstances, the observed result, the expected result, the log and a mod list. Workshop IDs in a log may not tell another reader which mod you mean, so include the names and load order separately.
Separate vanilla and modded troubleshooting
For an unmodded installation
- Confirm that every mod is disabled and that the game is on the branch you intend to test.
- Start a new game or use a clean test case that does not depend on a modded save.
- Reproduce the failure with the smallest number of actions possible.
- Copy
Player.logimmediately after the failure. - Report the version, platform, reproduction steps and log through the current official channel named by Ludeon. The October 12, 2026 announcement directs unmodded bug reports to the official RimWorld development Discord; Ludeon’s support page also lists a Support forum and email support, and its startup guidance points black-screen users to a solutions thread.
Check the current announcement or support page before submitting because destinations and labels can change.
For a modded installation
- Preserve the current save, log and complete mod list before changing the load order.
- Note which mods updated, were added, removed or reordered at the same time as the RimWorld update.
- Reproduce the problem using the same save and the same steps.
- For a controlled comparison, create a separate test profile or copy of the save and change one factor at a time where practical.
- Test whether a new, unmodded game shows the same failure. Treat this as a comparison, not as permission to continue a modded save without its required mods.
- Record the result of every comparison and collect a fresh log for the failing configuration.
Disabling every mod can show whether the failure is related to the modded environment, but it does not repair a save that depends on those mods. Do not overwrite your only save while experimenting.
How to interpret a yellow unsupported warning
Ludeon says most mods should work on 1.7 without author changes. A yellow “potentially unsupported” label can appear simply because the game version number changed. It is a warning to check the author’s current notes, not proof that the mod caused your crash. Test the specific behavior and report the reproducible evidence instead of treating the label as a diagnosis.

Understand what the 1.7 performance claims mean
Ludeon says the Waylith Engine build in 1.7 produced “2-4x” improved performance in its own tests compared with 1.6. The announcement gives two more specific results: a late-game colony measured 2.2 times better performance, and a 1,500-mod pack loaded in six minutes instead of 14 minutes on 1.6.
| Ludeon test | Reported result | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Late-game colony | 2.2x better performance than 1.6 | A developer test result, not a guarantee for your colony. |
| 1,500-mod pack loading | 6 minutes on 1.7 versus 14 minutes on 1.6 | Useful context for loading expectations, but your hardware and mods can produce different times. |
| Overall 1.7 testing | “2-4x” improved performance compared with 1.6 | A broad range from Ludeon’s tests; it is not an independent benchmark. |
Ludeon explicitly cautions that individual improvements vary with the specific PC and mods. If your installation is slower after updating, compare the same save, branch and mod set before concluding that the engine change caused the result. No independent benchmark or case-specific log establishes why a particular player is slow.
Work through performance symptoms without destroying evidence
Slow startup or mod loading
Record the time from launching the game to the main menu and from selecting a save to entering the map. Note whether the delay occurs only with a large mod list. Check the exact branch and compare a controlled launch with the same list after allowing Steam to finish updating every item. Keep the original log and mod list if the load fails.

Write down the seed and map settings, then test a separate seed without changing several settings at once. If only one configuration fails, include that seed and configuration in the report. If every configuration is slow on the same branch, capture the log from a fresh attempt rather than relying on a general statement that generation “takes forever.”

Late-game ticks-per-second slowdown
Record colony size, number of maps, major ongoing jobs and the point at which the slowdown begins. Test whether a new colony on the same version and mod list behaves normally. A comparison can show whether the symptom is tied to one save, but it cannot identify a mod without further controlled testing.
Do not make unsupported system changes first
The available official material does not establish that buying hardware, changing drivers, deleting configuration files or reinstalling fixes an unknown post-update problem. Check the patch notes for your exact build first. Consider platform-specific system changes only when the symptom and the official instructions support them, and preserve the log before making changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the failure stage to choose the next branch
Startup crash or black screen
Confirm the branch and version, launch once, and preserve the log. Ludeon’s support page directs startup and black-screen cases to a solutions thread. Follow the current instructions there and include the log if the problem persists. Do not classify a black screen as a mod issue until you have recorded whether mods were enabled.
Crash while loading a save
Test whether a new game reaches the map. If it does, note the save’s originating version and mod list. Ludeon states that 1.6 saves load on 1.7 and that 1.7 saves work again on 1.6, but this is an announced compatibility position, not a guarantee for every modded save. A save that depends on a changed or missing mod can still require separate investigation.
Best Value
Crash during play
Identify the smallest repeatable action: opening a particular tab, selecting a pawn, starting a bill, entering a map or waiting a fixed number of hours. Reproduce it once, copy the log, and report the exact action. Avoid repeatedly loading the only copy of a save while experimenting.
Failure during generation
Capture the seed, map settings and point at which generation stops. Compare a new seed only after preserving the failing case. This distinguishes a single reproducible configuration from a branch-wide problem without claiming a cause prematurely.
Save and branch compatibility: what is established
Ludeon’s 1.7 announcement says, “Your 1.6 savegames will load on 1.7, and 1.7 saves also work if you go back to 1.6.” Treat that as the developer’s stated cross-version behavior. Make a backup before switching branches, especially when a save contains mods, because the announcement does not prove compatibility for every mod and every save combination.
If a yellow mod warning appears after moving to 1.7, check the mod author’s notes and test a reproducible action. The warning may reflect only the changed game version. A crash, missing content or failed load requires the log and mod list rather than an assumption based on the warning color.
Prepare a report that can be acted on
Include these facts
- RimWorld version and branch.
- Operating system and whether the installation is vanilla or modded.
- Save origin and whether a new game reproduces the issue.
- Exact reproduction steps, including seed or map settings when relevant.
- What you expected and what actually happened.
- A copy of
Player.logtaken immediately after reproducing the issue. - A readable mod list, including recent changes and load order.
Choose the current official channel
For unmodded bugs, use the official RimWorld development Discord link named in Ludeon’s current update announcement. Ludeon’s support page separately lists a Support forum and email support, and its bug guidance may direct users to a Bugs forum. Because these destinations can change, open the current Ludeon announcement or support page and follow the channel it names for your case.
Ludeon’s older mod-bug guidance says official support is not provided for mod-related bugs unless an underlying vanilla issue can be confirmed; mod authors and community volunteers may still help. Phrase a mod report as a reproducible technical case and provide the requested evidence rather than demanding a vanilla fix for an unisolated mod interaction.
Quick Recap
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Calling every post-update problem a regression: first identify the branch and exact version.
- Launching again before copying the log: the next run can replace the useful evidence.
- Posting only Workshop IDs: add readable mod names and load order.
- Disabling mods on the only save: use a copy or separate test profile.
- Changing several variables at once: one-factor comparisons produce clearer evidence.
- Treating a warning label as proof: a changed version number can trigger the yellow label.
- Quoting developer performance figures as a promise: Ludeon’s results vary with hardware and mods and are not independent benchmarks.
- Buying hardware or reinstalling immediately: the cited official material does not establish those actions as universal fixes.
A concise diagnostic checklist
- Write down the exact version, branch, operating system and symptom stage.
- Record whether the issue is vanilla or modded and whether the save came from another version.
- Reproduce the problem once with the smallest clear set of steps.
- Copy
Player.logbefore launching RimWorld again. - Save the complete named mod list and note recent changes.
- Use a separate test profile or save copy for controlled comparisons.
- Check patch notes for the matching build before making broad system changes.
- Submit the log, circumstances, expected result, observed result and mod list through the current Ludeon channel.
