On a jailbroken PS5, a separate homebrew application called PS5SX2 can handle physical PS2 discs, but its developer describes that function as experimental, disabled by default and dependent on the specific build and game.
Therefore, a rejected PS2 disc does not by itself prove that your optical drive is broken. Use a supported PS5 or PS4 game, Blu-ray or DVD to test the drive, then follow Sony’s troubleshooting procedure. Only troubleshoot PS2 launching inside PS5SX2 if you have deliberately installed and configured that unofficial software.

What a PS5 officially supports
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide for model CFI-1115A states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That is the decisive explanation for an unmodified PS5 that refuses an original PS2 game disc. The console’s normal operating system does not provide backward compatibility for PS2 software from physical media.

The drive can still read other supported formats. Sony’s documented list includes PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and AVCHD, subject to the qualifications in the safety guide. PS2 software discs are specifically outside that list.

That distinction matters because “the console will not read this disc” can describe two very different situations. A PS2 disc may be rejected because its format is unsupported, while a supported game or movie disc may fail because of dirt, damage, a software problem or a defective mechanism. The first is expected behavior on a standard PS5; the second deserves troubleshooting.
Because the PS2 format is unsupported, cleaning a disc, rebuilding the database or reinstalling system software cannot add official PS2 compatibility. Those steps are useful only for diagnosing a problem with media the console is designed to read.

PS5SX2’s developer release information available on October 13, 2026 describes physical-disc handling as experimental and off by default. A menu or option may therefore be missing in an older build, disabled in the current configuration or changed in a later release. Do not treat the feature as a normal PS5 capability, a Sony-supported feature or a guarantee that every PS2 title will boot.
Test the PS5 drive with supported media
Before blaming the drive, test a format Sony supports. Use a known-good PS5 or compatible PS4 game disc, a commercial Blu-ray or a DVD. Ideally, use more than one type of supported media. A single PS2 disc is not a valid drive test because the format is excluded from standard PS5 playback.
- Insert the supported disc in the correct orientation. On a vertical console, the label side faces toward the left when the disc slot is viewed from the front; on a horizontal console, the label faces upward. If you are uncertain, remove the disc and check the orientation diagram on the console or in its manual.
- Reinsert the disc after each check. Sony’s troubleshooting flow expects you to test the drive again after correcting orientation or cleaning the media.
- Clean the disc gently. Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Wipe from the center toward the outer edge rather than rubbing in a circular path. A basic microfiber disc-cleaning cloth is a reasonable low-cost accessory for this step. Cleaning can remove fingerprints or dirt; it cannot make a PS2-format disc officially compatible.
- Try another supported game, Blu-ray or DVD. One damaged disc can fail while the drive remains healthy. Several supported discs failing in the same way is more significant.
Do not use a scratched PS2 disc as the comparison disc and then conclude that the drive is faulty. For a useful comparison, choose media known to work in another compatible console or player, or a disc with no visible contamination or damage.
If supported media reads normally but the PS2 disc does not, the evidence points first to the official format limitation—or, on a jailbroken console, to PS5SX2 configuration or title compatibility. That is an inference from Sony’s supported-format list, not a formal hardware diagnosis.

Run Sony’s software troubleshooting steps
Use these steps only to investigate failures with supported discs. They do not enable PS2 playback. Reinsert and retest after each step so you know which change, if any, affected supported-media reading.
Clear cache and rebuild the database
- Turn off the PS5 completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then select the rebuild option when prompted.
- After the console restarts, test the same supported disc and one other supported disc.
Rebuilding the database reorganizes system data; it does not install a PS2 emulator, mount a PS2 image or change the list of supported disc formats. If you are using a jailbroken system, also consider that system updates or configuration changes can affect homebrew separately from Sony’s standard database process. Do not assume that a Safe Mode operation will restore a homebrew feature.
Do not reset casually
Sony’s procedure also lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) if earlier measures fail. This is a destructive step: it deletes console information and reinstalls the system software. Back up anything you need before selecting it, and do not use it merely because a PS2 disc is rejected. A reset cannot overcome Sony’s PS2 format exclusion and may remove a jailbreak or homebrew configuration.
When to use PlayStation Repairs
If multiple supported PS5 or PS4 game discs, Blu-rays and DVDs fail after the orientation, cleaning and Safe Mode checks, follow Sony’s direction to use PlayStation Repairs. That is the appropriate escalation for a possible general drive or console problem. There is no basis to promise a particular repair price from the available guidance; the service assessment determines what is needed.
Do not open the console as a first response, and never forcibly pull out a stuck disc. Sony specifically warns against forcing a disc from the mechanism. If the drive will not ingest or eject supported media normally, stop experimenting and use the official repair channel.
Troubleshoot PS2 discs in PS5SX2
These checks apply only when you are intentionally running PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5. The application is unofficial, its requirements can change and its physical-disc feature was documented as experimental and off by default on October 13, 2026. A standard PS5 dashboard will not expose the same controls.

Confirm the prerequisites
- The PS5 must be running a jailbreak that supports the PS5SX2 build you installed.
- Install the project’s named helper and mounting components required by that build. A missing component can prevent the disc path from appearing or prevent a dump from mounting.
- Supply a compatible PS2 BIOS yourself. The project states that BIOS files and games are not bundled.
- Use game media and files that your setup is intended to process; do not assume that an ordinary PS5 system menu will launch a PS2 disc.
- Check that the PS5SX2 release, jailbreak environment and helper versions are intended to work together. A feature documented for one combination may be unavailable in another.
Because the project evolves, check the release information that accompanies the exact PS5SX2 version on your console. A guide written for one build may describe a menu or helper that has moved or been replaced in another. Avoid copying a configuration from an unrelated firmware or release and treating it as a universal recipe.
Enable the physical-disc option
- Launch PS5SX2 from the jailbroken PS5 environment, not from the standard PS5 game library.
- Open its settings or media options and look for the experimental physical-disc or disc-dumping function. It may be disabled by default.
- Enable the option, save the configuration and restart the application if the build requests it.
- Insert the PS2 disc only after PS5SX2 is ready to handle it. Wait for the application to detect the disc rather than expecting the PS5 dashboard to recognize it.
- If the software needs an image, allow it to dump the disc according to the application’s instructions. Keep the console powered and do not eject the disc during the dump.
- After the dump or detection completes, select the discovered game inside PS5SX2 and attempt to launch it.
The exact labels and sequence can vary by release. If there is no physical-disc setting, do not infer that the drive is defective: the build may not include the feature, the required helper may be absent, or the option may remain unavailable on your firmware and jailbreak combination.

Separate media problems from format problems
Signs of dirt or physical damage
- A supported disc works intermittently and improves after careful cleaning.
- The same disc fails in another compatible console or player.
- The disc has visible fingerprints, heavy scratches or contamination.
- Other supported discs load normally while one particular disc repeatedly fails.
Use a soft clean cloth for surface dirt. Cleaning is a low-risk first step, but it cannot repair deep damage and cannot convert a PS2 disc into a supported PS5 format. Do not use abrasive materials or force the disc against the slot while trying to make it read.

- The console is otherwise operating normally and reads supported games, Blu-rays or DVDs.
- The only rejected media is PS2-format software in the standard PS5 interface.
- The PS5 displays no PS2 launch option because Sony does not provide one.
- There is no corresponding failure with supported discs or movie media.
In this situation, repeated resets or database rebuilds are unlikely to change the result. The limitation is software support, not a setting that ordinary troubleshooting can unlock.
Signs that warrant repair guidance
- Multiple known-good supported discs fail.
- The drive cannot ingest or eject supported media normally.
- Safe Mode cache/database procedures do not restore supported-disc reading.
- The console shows a broader pattern of disc errors rather than rejecting only PS2 software.
Follow Sony’s repair channel for those symptoms. Do not force a disc out or dismantle the console to test the mechanism. A PS2 disc that fails alone is not enough evidence to justify replacing the drive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a PS2 disc as the only drive test: its failure is expected on a standard PS5.
- Assuming “modded” means every feature is enabled: PS5SX2’s physical-disc path is experimental and off by default in the documented release information.
- Expecting universal game compatibility: the emulator project says compatibility work continues, so one title’s failure does not establish a hardware fault.
- Resetting before establishing the format: reinstalling system software deletes console information and still will not add official PS2 support.
- Forcing an eject: Sony warns against forcibly pulling a disc from the console.
- Confusing the dashboard with homebrew: a PS2 disc may be usable only through PS5SX2’s experimental workflow, not through the regular PS5 game screen.
- Mixing instructions from different releases: helper names, menu locations and disc behavior can change as PS5SX2 develops.
- Assuming a BIOS is included: the project says users must supply a compatible BIOS, and it does not bundle BIOS files or games.
- Leaving the console unattended during a dump: a dump may require the disc to remain inserted; do not eject it or interrupt power while the application is reading it.
What result should you expect?
For a normal PS5, the expected result is that an original PS2 game disc will not launch. Verify the drive with supported media, and seek repair help only if that supported media also fails. No cleaning routine or Sony system reset changes the official format policy.

For a jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2, success depends on the exact application release, jailbreak environment, helper and mounting components, user-supplied BIOS, disc-handling option and individual game. If the option is absent or a title fails, classify the issue as a configuration or compatibility question until supported discs have also been tested.

Can a regular PS5 play an original PS2 disc?

Will rebuilding the PS5 database make a PS2 disc work?
No. Sony’s Safe Mode cache and database procedure can help with supported-disc problems, but it cannot add PS2 compatibility to the official PS5 system.
