First identify which software is running. A standard PS5 does not officially play PlayStation 2 game discs, so failure on an unmodified console is expected rather than proof of a bad disc drive. Sony’s safety guide lists supported DVD media but separately excludes PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 software from disc playback: PS5 Disc Web Safety Guide.
A jailbroken PS5 is a different troubleshooting case. Community software such as PS5SX2 supplies a PS2-emulation path, but it has its own payload, BIOS, game-file, model and firmware requirements. Its documented tests are not a guarantee that every game, disc or firmware combination will work: PS5SX2 project repository. Use the sequence below to separate an unsupported format, an incomplete homebrew setup, a dirty or damaged disc, and a possible optical-drive fault.

Why won’t my PS2 disc work on a jailbroken PS5?
“Jailbroken” does not mean that the PS5’s normal system software has gained official PS2-disc support. If the console has booted into stock Sony software, the normal interface will reject a PS2 game disc even though the optical drive can read some DVDs. Sony’s documentation treats those as separate issues: DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW are listed among supported media, while PlayStation-format, PlayStation 2-format and PlayStation 3-format software are not playable from disc on the standard PS5.

Homebrew changes the software context, not Sony’s published compatibility list. A PS2 emulator may need to access a BIOS and game files through a particular payload chain. Therefore, a disc that appears as “unsupported” can indicate that the console is in stock mode, that the emulator is not fully loaded, or that the project does not support that physical-disc path. It is not safe to diagnose the drive from that message alone.

Confirm the console is actually in the intended homebrew setup
Before cleaning media or changing system settings, establish whether the PS5 is running the environment you expect. A console can remain physically jailbroken while currently booted into stock software, and the stock interface will still follow Sony’s limitations.
Check the launch state
- Confirm that the jailbreak has been activated for the current boot session, if your setup requires activation after every restart.
- Launch the PS2 emulator from the homebrew environment rather than relying on the standard disc notification.
- Verify that the helper payloads required by your release are loaded and that the emulator reports access to its configured files.
- Record the PS5 model and firmware before changing anything. The PS5SX2 repository lists tested examples for specified PS5 and PS5 Pro models and firmware versions; an unlisted combination has not been tried in that documented table.
PS5SX2’s documented setup includes the PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, a user-supplied PS2 BIOS and user-supplied game files. The project says that BIOS files, games and keys are not included. Consult the repository’s current instructions because payload names and procedures can change as the project is updated: PS5SX2 setup and release notes.
Do not assume that the emulator reads a physical disc
The project documentation identifies BIOS and game files as requirements, but the material available for this guide does not establish a complete, current matrix of physical PS2-disc support or external optical-drive compatibility. A disc being inserted into the PS5 therefore does not prove that PS5SX2 can use it directly. If the release instructions specify an image or other game-file format, follow those instructions and use files you are entitled to use. Do not infer a CD/DVD limitation, external-drive workaround or model-specific trick unless the project’s current documentation confirms it.

Can a PS5 read DVDs and still reject a PS2 game?
Yes. The optical mechanism’s ability to recognize a supported DVD media type is different from the operating system’s ability to execute software recorded in the PS2 format. Sony lists DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW among supported media, but separately says that PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from disc. A successful DVD movie test therefore cannot demonstrate official PS2-game compatibility.
Sony also states that PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. That guidance applies when you are testing the console as a normal PS5; it should not be converted into a claim about every homebrew build or every physical-media route. For a homebrew diagnosis, the relevant question is whether the current emulator release documents that media and setup as supported.
Inspect and clean the PS2 disc safely
Physical condition matters for media that the console or emulator is supposed to read. Sony notes that dirt, scratches, recording quality and manufacturing variation can affect playback of supported discs. Cleaning can remove a read obstacle; it cannot add PS2 support to stock software and cannot make an unsupported homebrew configuration compatible.

Inspection checklist
- Hold the disc by its edge and center hole. Look for fingerprints, dust, radial scratches, cracks, warping or a deformed edge.
- Do not insert a cracked, repaired, stickered, non-circular or 8 cm disc. Sony specifically warns against those types of media.
- If the label is lifting or the disc is visibly delaminating, stop testing it in the console; another supported disc is a safer diagnostic.
Cleaning procedure
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth intended for optical discs.
- Wipe from the center hole straight toward the outer edge. Do not scrub in a circular track around the disc.
- Remove fingerprints and loose dirt, then allow any moisture from the cleaning process to evaporate before reinserting.
- Retry the disc once. If the same disc still fails, move to a known-supported test disc rather than repeatedly polishing it.
Sony’s general instructions for disc problems are available at How to troubleshoot disc issues on PS5 consoles. A lint-free disc cloth is useful only for cleaning supported DVD or Blu-ray media; it cannot change the console’s software compatibility.
Test another supported disc to isolate the drive
One PS2 disc is a poor test of the optical drive because format support, emulator compatibility and disc condition are all unknown at once. Sony recommends trying another game, Blu-ray Disc or DVD. Choose media that Sony lists as supported and that is known to work in another compatible player if possible.
Interpret the comparison
- Another supported disc works: the drive can at least read that class of media. Concentrate on stock-versus-homebrew state, PS5SX2 requirements, the PS2 disc’s condition and whether physical-disc use is documented for your release.
- No supported disc works: investigate insertion orientation, cleaning, Safe Mode maintenance and possible hardware service. A PS2 disc alone cannot distinguish an unsupported format from a general drive fault.
- DVD works but Blu-ray does not, or the reverse: record the exact results and continue with Sony’s support sequence. Different supported media results are more useful than repeatedly trying the same PS2 disc.
Do not use an audio CD or a burned disc as the control test: Sony says those are not playable on PS5. The control must be a supported game, DVD or Blu-ray Disc.

Follow Sony’s troubleshooting sequence for supported media
These steps apply to a supported disc or to checking whether the console has a general read problem. They do not turn a stock PS5 into a PS2 emulator.
- Reinsert the disc. Remove it completely, wait briefly and insert it again. If the console is vertical on its stand, Sony says the labeled side faces left as you insert the disc.
- Clean and inspect it. Use the center-to-edge method above and reject cracked, deformed, repaired, stickered, non-circular or 8 cm media.
- Try a different supported disc. Use a game, DVD or Blu-ray Disc that the PS5 is designed to play. Note whether the console recognizes it consistently.
- Use Safe Mode’s “Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.” Start the PS5 in Safe Mode and select that maintenance option. Follow the on-screen prompts and allow the process to finish before testing again.
- Consider system-software reinstallation only as a later step. Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all information on the console. Back up data and read the current instructions before selecting it; do not use this destructive step merely because a PS2 disc is unsupported.
- Contact PlayStation Repairs if supported media still fails. Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs when the problem persists after the listed checks: PlayStation disc troubleshooting.
What PS5SX2’s compatibility notes do—and do not—prove
PS5SX2 is described by its repository as a PS2 emulator port for PS5. Its setup depends on a jailbroken console and additional payloads, and it requires the user’s own BIOS and game files. The project’s tested-game section warns that results can change and that listed tests are not a compatibility guarantee.

Use the documented matrix as a boundary
- If your model and firmware appear in the project’s tested examples, that means the combination has been tried in the circumstances recorded by the project; it does not guarantee your disc, dump, BIOS revision or payload state.
- If your firmware is not listed, treat compatibility as unestablished rather than assuming it is supported or unsupported.
- If a game is absent from the tested-games section, do not interpret the omission as a definitive failure. The project itself says its results can change.
- Recheck the repository after updates. Homebrew payloads, helper components and setup steps may change.
Because the available project documentation does not provide a complete current table for physical PS2 discs and external optical drives, avoid claims such as “this particular PS2 disc type always works” or “that external drive fixes it” unless a current project release explicitly documents the combination.

Diagnose the “unsupported disc” message by branch
The message appears in the normal PS5 home screen
This is consistent with Sony’s official behavior for PS2 software from disc. Verify that the jailbreak and emulator are active, then check the homebrew requirements. Do not spend time rebuilding the database to make stock software launch an unsupported PS2 format.
The emulator launches but reports missing files
Return to the PS5SX2 setup documentation. Confirm the helper payload chain, ShadowMountPlus, kstuff and the user-supplied BIOS and game files required by your release. The repository states that those files and keys are not bundled with the project.
The emulator sees the disc but a particular game does not boot
Record the exact model, firmware, emulator release and game result. Compare that combination with the project’s tested examples, while remembering that the project’s tests are not guarantees. Check the disc for damage and use a known-supported optical disc to rule out a general read problem.

Test a supported DVD, Blu-ray Disc or game, reinsert it in the correct orientation, clean it and perform the Safe Mode cache/database step. If several supported discs fail, follow Sony’s repair guidance rather than attributing every failure to PS2 emulation.
When is the PS5 disc drive probably faulty?
A drive fault becomes more plausible when multiple discs that Sony supports fail after correct insertion, cleaning and the Safe Mode maintenance step. The strongest evidence is a repeatable failure across different supported media, not a single PS2 disc rejected by stock software. Keep notes of each test: media type, whether the disc is commercially produced, the on-screen message and whether the console makes repeated spin-up attempts.
Do not open the console or force a disc while troubleshooting. If supported media continues to fail, use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs route or a qualified repair service. The official support page, rather than the PS2 emulator project, is the appropriate source for hardware-service instructions.
