Start by identifying which layer is failing. A “Failure to Save” message on Windows has a documented local cause: Planet Zoo 2 cannot find the default Saved Games folder. A zoo that crashes, loops on loading, or returns to the main menu needs a different sequence: protect the local Saves folder, verify the installation, and try an earlier autosave. Franchise data that appears to vanish while the game is connecting may be server-side; current authoritative guidance does not establish a recovery procedure for that data.
The safest order is therefore: record the exact symptom, make a copy of local saves, repair the Windows folder if the error is a save failure, verify the game and PC baseline, test an earlier autosave, and then contact Frontier with reproducible details. Do not repeatedly overwrite or delete files before making the backup.

Also note the scope: one zoo versus every zoo, local save error versus loading crash, whether the behavior repeats, and whether an earlier autosave opens. Those four observations determine whether to prioritize folder repair, file verification, rollback, or escalation.

Protect your saves before troubleshooting
A repair attempt can change timestamps or create new files. Make a separate copy first, especially if the zoo still appears in the list.
Copy the local Saves directory
- Exit Planet Zoo 2 completely. Close the launcher as well if it is still synchronizing or updating.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to
C:Users<UserName>Saved GamesFrontier DevelopmentsPlanet Zoo<SomeSortOfIDNo>Saves. Replace the two angle-bracketed names with the folders that exist on your PC; they are not literal folder names. - Copy the entire
Savesfolder to a different location, such as an external drive or a separate folder that will not be synchronized over the original. - Give the copy a date and a short note about the symptom, for example, “before loading crash.” Do not edit the backup.
This copy protects local autosaves while you test. It cannot restore data that exists only on Frontier’s online services, and it does not prove that a particular file is healthy.
Fix the documented Windows “Failure to Save” error
Frontier Developments’ support article dated October 14, 2026 states: “The ‘Failure to Save’ error message in Planet Zoo 2 appears when it cannot locate your default Windows ‘Saved Games’ folder.” Check that path before reinstalling the game or deleting a zoo.

Check whether Windows exposes the default folder
- Open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar, type
shell:SavedGames, and press Enter. - Confirm that Windows opens the Saved Games location and that its path is
C:Users%username%Saved Games. The percent-delimited name is filled in by Windows for the signed-in account. - Try saving in Planet Zoo 2 again. If the folder opens normally and the error remains, continue with the broader PC and installation checks below.
Restore a missing default location
If shell:SavedGames cannot open the location, or the expected folder is absent, use Frontier’s supplied batch file, Restore_Saved_Games_Default_Location.bat.
- Download the batch file from Frontier’s official Save/Load Error in Planet Zoo 2 support article. Use the browser’s Save Link As command so the file is saved locally rather than opened as text.
- Run the restoration procedure described by Frontier’s article. Windows may ask for confirmation because a batch file changes a known-folder setting; read the prompt and allow it only if the file came from Frontier’s support page.
- Close and reopen File Explorer, then run
shell:SavedGamesagain. - Launch the game and test a save. Use a small, non-critical test if possible before returning to the affected zoo.
If you intentionally moved Saved Games to another drive, first restore the default location so the game can find it. Then right-click the restored Saved Games folder, open its location properties, and set the intended path using the procedure in Frontier’s support article. Do not simply create a similarly named folder in an arbitrary directory; Windows must recognize it as the account’s Saved Games location.
Check the PC baseline and installation
When the folder exists but saves or loads still fail, eliminate basic compatibility and file-integrity problems before assuming that the zoo is corrupted. Frontier’s current PC guidance lists the following baseline. Minimum specifications can change during development, so meeting them is not a guarantee that every zoo or graphics setting will run smoothly.

Verify the game files
- Open the launcher or platform where Planet Zoo 2 is installed.
- Select the game’s management or properties screen.
- Run its file-integrity command, usually labeled Verify, Verify files, or Repair. The exact label depends on the platform.
- Allow the process to finish and download replacements if it reports damaged or missing files.
- Restart the launcher and test the affected zoo again.
While testing, note whether another program or another game is also crashing. A pattern across multiple applications makes a storage, driver, memory, or operating-system problem more plausible and gives support a useful lead. Keep adequate free space beyond the 40 GB installation figure so Windows and the game can create temporary data.

For a crash, an infinite-looking loading screen, or a return to the main menu that affects one Franchise zoo, work from the backup you made rather than deleting files.
Try an earlier autosave in My Zoos
- Open Planet Zoo 2 and go to My Zoos.
- Select the affected Franchise zoo and look for an earlier autosave entry rather than the newest attempt.
- Open the earlier entry. If it loads, immediately save it under a new name so the original sequence remains available for comparison.
- Play only long enough to confirm that the zoo is stable, then exit normally and make another backup of the working save.
A responder in a Frontier forum discussion begun March 13, 2025 recommended this rollback approach for a Franchise zoo that crashed during loading and advised keeping backups. It is community guidance, not a guarantee: an earlier autosave may also be damaged, may lose recent construction, or may not exist.

Test the scope without overwriting the problem
- Open a different local or Franchise zoo. If other zoos work, the failing save is the narrower suspect.
- Start a small test zoo only if you have already backed up the affected files. A successful test separates a general installation failure from a single-save failure.
- Do not delete the newest autosave to “force” an older one. Keep the original in the backup so support can inspect the sequence if needed.
Understand Franchise’s online symptoms
Franchise mode depends on online services in addition to local files. Players have reported loading loops, stalled saving, returns to the main menu, and suspected server overload, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a root cause or a guaranteed recovery method.
Signs that the problem may be online
- The game reaches an online or connecting state and never completes, while local content opens normally.
- More than one Franchise zoo or online feature is affected at the same time.
- The account appears signed in but the expected online data, including a zoo or Conservation Credits, is absent.
- The behavior changes with the time of day or resolves without any local file change.
For these cases, record the platform, account symptoms, local time and time zone, exact wording on screen, and whether local zoos still open. Current authoritative sources do not establish server-side recovery for Franchise saves or Conservation Credits. A local folder repair cannot recreate data that never existed on the PC.

What not to assume
- Do not treat a loading loop as proof that the local save is corrupt.
- Do not promise that reinstalling the game will restore online data.
- Do not spend or transfer any remaining online currency while the account state is unclear; document what is displayed first.
Use a decision path for repeated failures
When the first attempt does not work, classify the result instead of repeating the same step.

Prepare a support or bug report that can be acted on
Frontier’s support guidance asks players to describe the behavior and provides a support contact route. Include enough detail for an agent to distinguish a missing Windows path, a damaged installation, a single-save problem, and an online account issue.
Include these facts
- Platform and launcher, plus the exact Windows version and whether it is 64-bit.
- Whether the problem affects one zoo, every zoo, or only Franchise features.
- The complete error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
- When the problem began and what happened immediately before it: an update, crash, disconnect, hardware change, or file move.
- Whether
shell:SavedGamesopens and the path it shows. - Whether file verification completed and whether it replaced anything.
- Whether an earlier autosave appears in My Zoos and what happens when you open it.
- Crash symptoms, account or online symptoms, and the approximate time of each attempt.
Keep the untouched backup until support has finished troubleshooting. If a support agent requests files, provide copies rather than moving or renaming the originals.
Update-related context and prevention
Frontier’s update notes list a save-corruption fix in version 1.16.1, published May 6, 2025. That note is evidence that a prior release addressed a save-related defect; it does not mean every current loading failure is fixed by that version or that an affected zoo can always be repaired. Keep the game and launcher updated, then retest after updates using a backup.

Habits that reduce the cost of a failure
- Keep periodic copies of the entire local Saves directory, not just the newest file.
- Before a major update or large building session, make a dated backup.
- Maintain free storage and avoid shutting down Windows while the game is writing.
- Do not move the Saved Games folder without updating its recognized Windows location.
- When a save fails, stop repeated attempts long enough to capture the error and protect the files.
- Record which autosave opened successfully so you can return to a known-good point.
These practices protect local progress. They do not create a backup of Franchise information held only by online services, so online symptoms still require accurate escalation details.
