Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf an AI assistant gives an answer based on an old preference, an unrelated conversation, a connected account, or a phone integration, treat the problem as a context-source problem rather than a mysterious device failure. First identify which assistant produced the reply and how you opened it. Then inspect its memory, chat-history, custom-instruction, file, connected-app, and device-integration controls; correct or remove the stale source; and repeat the same prompt in a temporary or otherwise unpersonalized chat.
A clean comparison can show whether personalization contributed, but it cannot prove that one hidden memory caused the answer. Assistants can vary their responses between runs, and their visible memory summaries or source lists may not reveal every influence. Use the workflow below to isolate the route, clean the relevant source, and verify important information independently.

Why an AI assistant can use the wrong context
Personal AI products can assemble a response from more than the words in your latest prompt. Depending on the product and features enabled, possible inputs include saved memories, previous chats, custom instructions, uploaded files, connected services, and a phone or operating-system integration. Gemini describes considering a prompt together with custom instructions, past chats, and connected Google apps when relevant. ChatGPT documents saved memories, chat history, custom instructions, files, and connected apps as possible context sources. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guidance and Google’s Personal Intelligence overview.

An old detail may therefore be correct information that is no longer applicable: a former job, a previous city, an obsolete dietary preference, an old project file, or an account that is still connected. An apparently irrelevant detail can also come from the route you used. A request sent through a phone assistant may include limited device and request metadata even when you did not type those details into the conversation.

Do not assume that a visible memory panel is a complete audit log. OpenAI says its memory summary is high-level, and that the Sources shown beneath an answer may not expose every factor that shaped the response. A missing source entry does not establish that no personalization occurred.
Start by identifying the assistant and entry route
Write down the exact response, the account you were signed into, and the path that produced it. The same wording can be handled by different systems when you use a web app, a mobile app, a voice assistant, or an operating-system extension.
- Name the assistant. Determine whether the response came from ChatGPT, Gemini, or an Apple Intelligence feature that invoked ChatGPT.
- Record where you started. Note the website or app, the device, and whether another assistant or integration forwarded the request.
- Check the account. Confirm the profile, workspace, and sign-in state. Personalization settings can differ between personal and managed accounts.
- Capture the prompt and answer. Save the wording before changing settings so you can run a fair comparison later.
Menu names and controls vary by plan, geography, platform, account type, and staged rollout. If a label below is different in your app, use the current settings page and the product’s official help documentation rather than assuming a control has been removed.
Map every place the stale detail could live
| Potential source | What it can contain | First place to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Saved memory | Useful personal details retained for later conversations | Personalization or memory settings and any available memory summary |
| Past chats or chat history | Earlier statements that the assistant may reference when relevant | Chat history, archived chats, and the conversation where the detail appeared |
| Custom instructions | Direct guidance you supplied about how the assistant should respond | Custom-instruction or personalization settings |
| Files | Uploaded documents, including files kept in a library or attached to a prior task | File or Library area and chats that used the document |
| Connected apps | Information retrieved from enabled email, storage, calendar, browser, or other services | Connected-app permissions inside the assistant and the linked service |
| Device integration | Request content, attachments, and limited metadata supplied by an operating-system extension | Integration settings on the device and the account used by the extension |
These sources are independent in important ways. Deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a separately stored memory. Removing a memory does not remove the sentence in the original chat, an uploaded file, or data still available through a connected service. Handle each applicable source instead of relying on one global delete button.

ChatGPT: find, correct, and remove outdated context
Inspect memory and the answer’s Sources
- Open Settings → Personalization → Memory. Review the memory summary and any saved-memory controls available to your account.
- Inspect the answer for a Sources area. It may identify a past chat, saved memory, custom instruction, file, or connected app that contributed to the response.
- Compare the displayed information with the exact answer. A source list is useful evidence, not a complete explanation; OpenAI says it may not show every factor.
ChatGPT’s documented behavior is to look for relevant context when it is likely to improve a response, rather than search your entire history for every prompt. That relevance judgment can still be wrong when a fact has changed or when a connected source contains an outdated record.
Tell ChatGPT that a remembered fact is wrong
When a saved detail is incorrect, state the correction plainly in a conversation, for example: That information is outdated. My current location is [current location]; forget the old location. You can also ask the system not to use a particular detail. Where the interface provides an editable memory summary, change or remove the entry there as well.
“Don’t mention this again” changes how personalization is used, but it is not the same as deleting the original source. If your goal is complete removal, continue with the source-cleanup steps below.
Remove the memory and the original source
- Delete the stale entry from the saved-memory controls or memory summary.
- Delete the chat in which the detail was introduced, including an archived or regular chat if it remains available.
- Remove the detail from any custom instructions that still state it.
- Check the Library or file area and delete documents containing the old information, then review chats that attached those files.
- Review connected apps and remove, correct, or disconnect the record that keeps supplying the outdated detail.
- Allow for propagation time. A deletion may not change every surface immediately.
Turning off memory does not delete past chats. OpenAI also distinguishes the setting that references chat history from deletion of the original conversations: turning off Reference chat history is described as scheduling derived information for deletion within 30 days, while the source chats remain unless you delete them separately. Saved memories are stored separately from chat history. The current product controls and retention explanations are documented in OpenAI’s ChatGPT data-controls guide.

Do not confuse memory with model-training controls
The Improve the model for everyone setting concerns whether eligible content is used to improve OpenAI models. It does not hide saved memories or erase chats. Change it only when your goal is model-training control; use Personalization, memory, chat, file, and connected-app controls to address an unwanted context source.
Gemini: check past-chat personalization and connected Google apps
Review personalization settings
Gemini’s Personal Intelligence feature is described as analyzing your prompt alongside instructions, past chats, and connected Google apps when relevant. In Gemini, inspect the current personalization controls, custom instructions, past-chat personalization option, and the list of enabled connected apps. Google says users choose which apps to connect, and Gemini may reference or explain information from those sources; you can ask for more information about a connected-source reference when it appears.
Google’s Personal Intelligence page currently describes the feature as an eligible-user beta. The page states that it is for people aged 18 or older, personal accounts rather than Workspace business, enterprise, or education accounts, and supported web, Android, and iOS platforms. It also states that availability excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria. These are the page’s current conditions and can change as the rollout changes; your account may therefore show different controls. See Google’s Personal Intelligence information and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Correct the underlying Google source
- Open Gemini’s personalization and connected-app settings and note which features are enabled.
- Review custom instructions for former preferences, roles, locations, or formatting requirements.
- Check the past-chat personalization control and the specific conversation that contains the stale detail.
- Inspect each connected Google app for an old document, email, calendar entry, contact, or profile field.
- Correct or delete the source in the originating service, then revisit Gemini’s activity and privacy controls.
Do not promise yourself that one Gemini toggle erases every underlying copy. Google describes several information categories in its privacy materials, including prompts, information from apps, browsers, devices and connected apps, supplemental features, and location. Match the deletion or correction action to the category that supplied the answer.

Apple Intelligence and Siri: isolate the ChatGPT extension
If the response appeared after asking Siri or another Apple Intelligence feature, inspect the extension rather than only the ChatGPT app. On an iPhone using the documented iOS 26 path, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → ChatGPT and review the Use ChatGPT control. Apple documents this path in its iPhone user guide. Disabling the extension prevents its use in supported Apple Intelligence features.
Check whether you were signed in to a ChatGPT account when the request was sent. Apple says account privacy settings apply when you are signed in, while the no-account path has different data handling. For the extension, Apple documents that request content and attachments may be sent along with limited metadata such as time zone, country, device type, language, and the feature used. Apple says the IP address is obscured from ChatGPT while general location is provided for purposes including fraud prevention and legal compliance. The details are in Apple’s ChatGPT Extension and Privacy notice.
Disabling the extension is a forward-looking route change. It should not be described as retroactively deleting a request that was already sent or removing account history created through another service.
Run a clean comparison before drawing a conclusion
ChatGPT Temporary Chat
- Choose the unpersonalized or temporary-chat option before starting the conversation.
- Ask the same question without repeating the old personal detail.
- Compare the answer with the original wording, model, and account route.
ChatGPT Temporary Chat does not create or update memories. OpenAI says temporary chats may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. The unpersonalized choice is made before the conversation begins and cannot be changed after it starts. Temporary Chat is separate from the setting that controls model training.
Best Value
Gemini Temporary Chat
- Start a Gemini Temporary Chat using the current control in the app or website.
- Repeat the prompt without supplying the stale fact.
- Check whether the conversation appears in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity.
Google says Gemini Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and are not used for future personalization or model training. Google also says they may be kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. That is a service handling period, not a promise of instantaneous erasure.
Interpret the comparison carefully
If the answer changes in a clean chat, personalization is a plausible contributor, but the result is not proof of one particular hidden memory. Language models can produce different outputs across runs, and official source displays can be incomplete. If the answer does not change, the stale source may still be present in the prompt, a connected service, a file, the integration route, or the model’s ordinary uncertainty.
Use symptom-based troubleshooting branches
The assistant repeats one obsolete personal fact
- Search saved memories and custom instructions for the exact wording or a close paraphrase.
- Delete the memory and the chat where it originated.
- Check files and connected apps for another copy.
- Wait for deletion propagation, then run a temporary-chat comparison.
The answer changes only when you use a phone assistant
- Repeat the request directly in the assistant’s web or mobile app.
- Compare the signed-in account and enabled extensions.
- For Apple’s route, inspect the ChatGPT extension and the request metadata described in Apple’s privacy notice.
- Disable the extension and repeat the request through the direct app.
The Sources area names a chat you already deleted
Check whether a separate saved memory, file, connected-app record, or cached account surface still contains the detail. Deleting one visible conversation does not necessarily remove independently stored data. Allow time for changes to propagate, then test again rather than assuming the first deletion failed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The source list is empty or unhelpful
Do not treat an empty list as proof that no context was used. OpenAI states that Sources may not show every factor. Compare a direct, temporary conversation with the original route, and provide the current facts explicitly in the prompt while you verify the result.
The clean test is still wrong
- Check that you used the same assistant, model, account type, language, and prompt route.
- State the current facts and ask the assistant to rely only on them for that response.
- Inspect whether a file or connected app is automatically attached.
- Verify important claims against an authoritative source instead of treating a changed answer as proof of correctness.
Keep personalization, retention, and training controls separate
| Control or mode | What it changes | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Saved-memory controls | Whether a separately stored personal detail is used for personalization | Deletion of the original chat, file, or connected-service record |
| Chat-history reference | Whether derived information from prior chats is available for future personalization | Removal of the source conversations |
| Custom instructions | Direct guidance supplied by you for responses | Deletion of other memories or files |
| Model-training setting | Whether eligible content is used to improve the provider’s models | Hiding or deleting saved chats and memories |
| ChatGPT Temporary Chat | No creation or updating of memories during the temporary conversation | Immediate deletion; OpenAI states retention of up to 30 days for safety |
| Gemini Temporary Chat | No appearance in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and no future personalization or model training | Immediate deletion; Google states retention of up to 72 hours for responding and feedback |
| Apple ChatGPT extension toggle | Whether supported Apple Intelligence features can invoke ChatGPT | Retroactive deletion of a request already sent through the extension |
Retention windows are statements from the respective services, not measurements of AI accuracy or general statistics about how assistants remember information. Account, region, plan, and policy changes can alter the controls shown to you.
Prevent outdated context from returning
- Review custom instructions after major changes. Update role, location, household, health, work, and formatting preferences when they change.
- Use temporary chats for one-off or sensitive questions. Start the temporary mode before entering the prompt.
- Prune connected apps. Disconnect services you no longer use and correct records at their source.
- Maintain file hygiene. Remove superseded documents from libraries and avoid leaving conflicting versions attached to active chats.
- Separate accounts where appropriate. Confirm whether a personal or managed workspace account is active before troubleshooting personalization.
- Label tests clearly. Use a fresh, unpersonalized conversation when you need to know whether an answer depends on prior context.
- Verify consequential answers. Personalization controls can change relevance, not factual authority; independently check medical, legal, financial, security, and technical claims.
When to stop troubleshooting and report the issue
Escalate through the assistant’s official support channel when you have recorded the prompt, account route, enabled context sources, deletion steps, and results from both an ordinary and a temporary conversation. Include timestamps and screenshots that do not expose secrets. Report the exact setting labels shown in your account, because rollout and eligibility differences can explain why another user sees a control you do not.
Before reporting, remove sensitive data from the test prompt and confirm that the behavior is not caused by a connected document, browser session, or device integration. If the answer affects a real decision, use an authoritative source or qualified professional rather than waiting for personalization controls to resolve the discrepancy.
