An intelligent PDU that shuts down is a protection event, not a routine reset. Keep the equipment closed, preserve its alarm and event history, identify whether a branch breaker, the PDU main input, an upstream UPS, or an external emergency-power-off (EPO) circuit opened, and only then correct the electrical condition. Remove or defer nonessential load, verify ratings and phase balance, and restart in the sequence specified for the model. If the cause is unclear, the trip repeats, a short circuit or persistent EPO is suspected, or energized testing is required, stop and use qualified electrical personnel.
What an unexpected PDU shutdown is telling you
An intelligent power distribution system monitors voltage, current, apparent power, breaker state, temperature and external control inputs. A shutdown means one of its protective or control functions operated. The display may show an overload, but the same loss of output can also result from a short circuit, an EPO or shunt-trip command, an upstream UPS failure, abnormal voltage, loss of input power or a control-power fault.

The first objective is not to restore power quickly. It is to preserve evidence and determine exactly which protective device opened. A branch trip and a main-input trip have different likely causes and different safe recovery procedures. Treating every event as an overload can hide a dangerous fault.
Safety boundary before any diagnosis
Keep the enclosure closed
Do not remove covers, reach into a PDU, or probe energized parts as an operator. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.333 requires exposed live parts to be de-energized unless a documented exception applies. A qualified person must apply lockout/tagout where required, verify the absence of voltage with suitable test equipment, and control re-energization.

Never “test” a breaker by repeatedly closing it
OSHA’s interpretation of 29 CFR 1910.334(b)(2) prohibits repetitive manual reclosing of circuit breakers or re-energizing circuits through replaced fuses after a protective-device operation. One unexplained trip is a diagnostic event. A second trip is a reason to stop, isolate the equipment and escalate—not an invitation to try again.
Protect critical loads while investigating
- Notify the operations owner and identify equipment that must remain on an alternate feed.
- Keep doors and barriers in place and prevent unauthorized reset attempts.
- Record who is responsible for the PDU, the UPS and the building EPO or alarm circuit.
- Use the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model, voltage, phase arrangement and breaker layout.
Capture evidence before resetting anything
Alarm history is often lost or overwritten after a reset. Photograph or transcribe the display and management interface first. Capture the event time and the state of every relevant device.
- Active alarm text and event-history entries, including timestamps.
- Which branch position, output breaker, main-input breaker or switch changed state.
- Input and output voltage, current and apparent-power readings, with phase identification where available.
- UPS operating mode, battery or bypass indication, and any upstream source alarm.
- EPO, fire-alarm, building-management or external shunt-trip indications.
- Recent additions, removals or starts of high-power equipment.
Schneider Electric’s Galaxy PDU troubleshooting procedure directs operators to record active alarms, reset alarms and clear external signals, then inspect alarm history for the trip cause. Follow that sequence only when the manual permits an operator reset and the scene is safe.

Locate the device that opened
| Observed opening point | Most useful first hypothesis | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Single branch breaker | Local overload, short circuit or phase imbalance on that branch | Branch current or apparent power, connected equipment and recent changes |
| PDU main-input breaker or switch | EPO or shunt trip, output overload, internal short circuit, source problem or failed breaker | Alarm history, external trip signal, UPS/source state and qualified inspection |
| Upstream UPS output or input | UPS overload, bypass or fault, source interruption, or downstream inrush | UPS event log, bypass availability, total PDU demand and restart sequence |
| No breaker indication but no PDU input | Source loss, open disconnect, wiring problem or upstream protection | Source status and continuity checks by a qualified person |
A displayed “overload” with a branch breaker open points toward a local load or imbalance. A main-input opening without a matching branch event broadens the investigation to EPO, automatic shunt trip, source voltage, internal faults and the breaker itself.
Separate overload from other shutdown causes
Overload or phase imbalance
Compare measured current and apparent power with the nameplate rating, breaker rating and the installation design for each phase. A total kW value can look acceptable while one phase exceeds its conductor or breaker limit. Where the design permits, move noncritical single-phase loads to a less-loaded phase using the approved switching procedure; do not rearrange conductors or breakers casually.
For a confirmed overload, disconnect or defer nonessential equipment first. APC Smart-UPS guidance likewise instructs operators to remove unnecessary equipment and reduce load before resetting a tripped input breaker. Keep a record of which loads were removed so they can be restored in a controlled order.

Short circuit
A short circuit generally produces an abrupt protective-device operation rather than a gradually rising demand. Burning odor, arcing evidence, damaged cords, a failed power supply or an immediate repeat trip are stop conditions. Do not reconnect the suspected device or substitute a larger breaker. Isolate the branch and have qualified personnel test the circuit and equipment.
EPO or external shunt trip
An EPO button, fire-alarm interface or building-management contact can open the PDU independently of load current. Check the event log and the physical or supervisory indication. Clear the external signal only after the responsible safety or facilities team confirms that it is safe; a PDU reset cannot override an active emergency input.
UPS overload, bypass or source failure
If the PDU is supplied by a UPS, inspect the UPS alarm and operating mode before touching PDU breakers. A UPS may have transferred to bypass, opened its output, entered a fault state or lost its input source. A PDU can therefore appear to have failed even when its own branch load is normal.
Overvoltage, undervoltage and voltage drop
Verify input and output voltage against the model’s specified range. Schneider Galaxy PDU troubleshooting identifies upstream UPS or power-conditioner problems as possible causes of overvoltage and undervoltage. Excessive distance or high output load can also produce voltage drop. Voltage measurements and continuity testing on energized or de-energized conductors belong to qualified personnel.
Control-power or communications fault
A display, controller or network alarm does not by itself prove that the power path is open. Conversely, a dark controller can indicate loss of control power even when an upstream source is present. Compare the controller indication with breaker positions, local metering and source status. Persistent control alarms require the manufacturer’s service procedure rather than repeated resets.

- Make the scene safe. Keep the enclosure closed, restrict access and apply the site’s lockout/tagout process if energized exposure is possible.
- Preserve the record. Photograph alarms, event timestamps, breaker positions, voltage, current, apparent power, UPS mode and EPO indications before clearing anything.
- Identify the opened protective device. Determine whether the event is on one branch, several branches, the PDU main input, the UPS or the source disconnect.
- Check external controls. Confirm whether EPO, fire alarm, shunt trip or building-management contacts are active. Do not bypass a safety circuit.
- Check the source and voltage path. Review UPS alarms and bypass state. Have a qualified person verify wiring continuity and voltage where the manual requires measurements.
- Compare demand with ratings. Use measured current or apparent power for each phase and branch; compare with nameplate, breaker and conductor ratings under the actual operating conditions.
- Reduce a confirmed overload. Disconnect or defer nonessential loads and rebalance phases only within the approved design and switching procedure.
- Investigate abnormal trips. A suspected short circuit, repeated trip, persistent EPO or unexplained main-input opening requires qualified diagnosis and, when appropriate, manufacturer service.
- Plan the restart. Follow the model-specific sequence, control inrush and restore loads gradually while monitoring readings and alarms.
Correcting an overload without creating a second fault
Remove load in a controlled order
Start with equipment that is nonessential, redundant or scheduled for maintenance. Use the equipment manufacturer’s shutdown command rather than pulling a plug under load. For servers and storage, coordinate with the application owner so an orderly shutdown does not create data corruption or a clustered-service failure.

Check both current and apparent power
Current is the conductor and breaker stress indicator; apparent power (VA or kVA) reflects the combined effect of real and reactive power. Intelligent PDUs may alarm on either value. Record the phase and branch associated with the highest reading, not only the facility total.
Respect phase and breaker limits
Rebalancing can lower a heavily loaded phase without reducing total facility demand, but only if the PDU and distribution design allow that operation. Do not move a plug to an outlet on another circuit unless the circuit identity, receptacle rating and transfer procedure are confirmed. Never replace a breaker with a higher rating to mask an overload.
Account for operating conditions
Cooling changes, fan speed, battery charging, motor starts and large switched-mode power supplies can alter demand. Compare the reading at steady state with the peak during startup. A load that is below its nominal value during normal operation can still trigger protection during a start or recovery event.
UPS interaction and inrush current
Inrush is the short-duration input current drawn when power supplies, transformers, filters or motors energize. Several downstream devices starting together can exceed the UPS’s instantaneous capability even when their steady-state load fits the PDU rating. The result may be a UPS overload, bypass transfer or output trip that looks like a PDU shutdown.
Eaton’s PDU installation and operation manual states: “If the PDU is supplied by a UPS, it is recommended that the UPS be placed in bypass mode before starting the PDU because of the possibility of high inrush current creating an UPS overload condition.” Use bypass only when the site procedure and UPS manual permit it; bypass may remove conditioning or battery protection.
For a planned shutdown, Eaton procedures call for shutting down connected equipment using the manufacturer’s sequence, opening output breakers, and then opening the main input breaker. For an unscheduled shutdown, identify and clear the cause before restarting. Do not infer that a bypass start is safe for every model or installation.

Controlled restart after the cause is cleared
- Confirm the alarm or external trip has been cleared by the responsible team and that no short-circuit evidence remains.
- Verify that the source and UPS are in the state required by the PDU manual, including approved bypass conditions when applicable.
- Ensure output breakers are open or loads are otherwise isolated as the manufacturer specifies.
- Close the PDU main input using the prescribed procedure and watch for voltage, phase and control-power alarms.
- Close output or branch breakers in a deliberate sequence, allowing readings to stabilize between groups.
- Start connected equipment according to each manufacturer’s sequence, prioritizing critical systems and observing inrush.
- Record post-start current, apparent power, voltage, UPS mode and any new event-history entries.
Eaton’s manual gives the essential rule plainly: “Do not attempt to restart the PDU until the cause of the shutdown has been identified and cleared.” If a protective device opens again, stop the sequence and escalate.

- The breaker trips immediately or repeatedly after a controlled, single reset permitted by the manual.
- A short circuit, arcing, smoke, heat damage or burning odor is suspected.
- An EPO, fire-alarm or shunt-trip input remains active or cannot be explained.
- The main input opens while branch loads appear normal.
- Voltage, continuity, insulation or phase measurements require access to exposed conductors.
- The PDU, UPS or breaker shows a fault code not covered by the operator procedure.
- The installation’s model, phase, voltage or breaker arrangement does not match the available documentation.
Provide the service team with the alarm export or photographs, event times, breaker positions, measured values, UPS state, load changes and the exact restart attempts. That information shortens diagnosis and reduces the temptation to repeat unsafe resets.
Preventing repeat shutdowns
Trend demand instead of waiting for an alarm
Use the PDU’s monitoring system to trend branch current, apparent power, voltage and phase balance. Establish an operating margin below the protective-device rating that matches the site’s engineering standard. Review trends after adding servers, storage, network equipment, cooling equipment or battery chargers.
Document the electrical path
Keep a current one-line diagram, breaker directory, phase map, UPS bypass procedure and EPO ownership list at the operations desk. Label branch positions consistently with the load inventory. A correct label can distinguish a local branch problem from a main-input event in minutes.
Test alarms and procedures during maintenance windows
Verify that alarm notifications identify the affected branch and timestamp. Exercise the approved shutdown and bypass procedure under controlled conditions, with facilities, electrical and application owners present. Do not test by opening a live protective device without an authorized switching plan.

Review every event
After service restores the system, compare the event history with UPS and building-management logs. Record the initiating condition, the protective device, load changes, corrective action and measured values. Repeated events at the same branch suggest a load or circuit issue; repeated main-input events suggest source, control or PDU-level investigation.

Key limits of generic troubleshooting
Enterprise PDUs and UPS systems are model-, voltage-, phase- and installation-specific. Eaton documentation covers PDU families in the 100–400 kVA and 300–500 kVA ranges; Schneider documentation includes Galaxy PDU variants rated at 400–500 kVA and 1000 kVA. Those are product ratings, not universal operating limits or failure statistics. Apply the nameplate and installation manual for the actual unit, and use qualified personnel whenever the procedure crosses the operator boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reset an intelligent PDU immediately after an alarm shutdown?
Only when the model’s operator procedure permits it, the alarm and any external trip signal are cleared, and the shutdown cause has been identified. A repeated trip requires qualified service rather than another reset.
How can I tell whether the UPS or the PDU caused the outage?
Compare timestamps and event logs. A UPS overload, bypass transfer or output fault points upstream; a branch breaker event with high branch demand points to the PDU load. A main-input trip requires checking both systems and any EPO circuit.
Why can a load below its normal rating still trip the system?
Startup inrush from power supplies, transformers, motors or simultaneous equipment starts can briefly exceed UPS or breaker capability even when steady-state current is acceptable.
Should I replace a tripped breaker with a larger one?
No. Breaker size is part of the conductor and equipment design. A larger breaker can defeat protection and requires an engineered change, not a troubleshooting shortcut.
What information should I give the manufacturer’s service team?
Send the model and ratings, alarm text and timestamps, breaker positions, branch and phase readings, UPS mode, EPO status, recent load changes and every restart attempt.
