How to Troubleshoot Network Incidents Across Multiple Monitoring Tools

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

The fastest way to troubleshoot a network incident spread across several monitoring tools is to follow one evidence loop: define the affected service and time window, choose the signal that answers the next question, correlate records with stable identifiers, narrow the fault domain, and verify recovery with an independent check.

No single dashboard proves root cause. Metrics show scale and trend, logs explain decisions, live-flow tools show what is happening now, and path tests assess whether a connection should be allowed. Treat each as an answer to a different question rather than as competing versions of the truth.

Start with a precise incident statement

Before opening another dashboard, write a one-sentence description that another operator could test. Include the service, users or locations affected, source and destination, protocol and port if known, start time, and whether the failure is continuous or intermittent.

  • Service: name the API, website, database, cluster workload, or hybrid connection that users cannot reach.
  • Impact: identify which users, regions, accounts, namespaces, or workloads are affected.
  • Path: record the source, destination, intermediate gateway or load balancer, and the expected route.
  • Traffic details: capture source and destination IP addresses, ports, and protocol when available.
  • Time window: use an explicit start and end time with a stated time zone. Extend the window slightly before the first alert to capture leading indicators.
  • Behavior: classify the symptom as timeout, reset, refusal, packet drop, name-resolution failure, high latency, or an authorization error.

This prevents a common failure mode: comparing graphs that overlap visually but represent different traffic, resources, or time zones.

Use the triage loop in this order

  1. Detect and scope. Start with the alert or user report. Record the affected service, users, path, protocol, port, incident window, and symptom. Examples include rising TCP resets, DNS concurrent-limit rejections, or packet drops.
  2. Isolate the tier. Decide whether the problem is inside the workload or cluster, in the surrounding virtual network, or at the service/application layer.
  3. Inspect the matching evidence. Use near-real-time metrics and live flows during an active event; use policy logs and flow logs for historical or intermittent events.
  4. Test the recovery. Run a reachability simulation or path test, then confirm that the operational metric returned to its normal state. A passing simulation does not prove that live traffic is healthy, and a healthy graph does not prove that every path is permitted.

This sequence follows the practical approach in Google Cloud’s GKE networking guidance and generalizes it to other platforms. It also reflects the distinction in AWS’s Incident Detection and Response monitoring and observability guide: “Monitoring tells you that something is wrong. Observability uses data collection to tell you what is wrong and why it happened.”

Which monitoring tool should you check first?

Choose the first tool by the question you need answered, not by which dashboard is most familiar.

Question Best first signal What it can establish What it cannot establish alone
How large is the impact and when did it begin? Service and infrastructure metrics Rate, trend, affected scope, and change timing The exact rule, route, or process that caused it
Was a connection blocked by policy? NetworkPolicy, firewall, or security-group logs Allow, deny, alert, rule-group, and sometimes the decision point Whether every affected request followed the same path
What traffic is crossing a network boundary? VPC or equivalent flow logs IP exchanges, ports, protocol, direction, interface or subnet context, and accept/reject status Application identity or request-level response details
What is happening right now on a node? Hubble CLI or another live-flow view Current flows and drop reasons at the node or cluster layer Historical events outside its retention or observation window
Should this path be reachable? Connectivity or path simulation Static reachability and the point where a configured firewall, route, or node would drop traffic Actual packet loss, saturation, or an application that is unhealthy despite an allowed path
Is the user-facing path degraded? Synthetic probes or service-level telemetry Latency, packet loss, and availability from defined probe locations The internal rule or resource responsible without infrastructure correlation

In AWS, Network Flow Monitor visualizes packet loss and latency for monitored flows; Internet Monitor analyzes internet-facing traffic and reports health events; Network Synthetic Monitor measures latency and packet loss for hybrid connections with probes. These are AWS capabilities, not universal names for equivalent services elsewhere.

How to tell whether the problem is inside a cluster or in the cloud network

For a Kubernetes incident, first compare a workload path with a baseline path outside the cluster. Google’s GKE guidance recommends a Google Compute Engine virtual-machine baseline test for this diagnosis.

Signs that point inside the cluster

  • Only pods or namespaces fail while a baseline virtual machine using the same destination succeeds.
  • Live flow data shows drops at a node or workload boundary.
  • NetworkPolicy decisions, container-network-interface behavior, or IP masquerading differs from the expected configuration.
  • GKE Dataplane V2 metrics show a rise in drops or resets at the same time as the service symptom.

Signs that point to the surrounding VPC

  • The baseline virtual machine and cluster workloads fail to reach the same destination.
  • VPC Flow Logs show rejected traffic, an unexpected route, or a missing return path.
  • Firewall rules, Cloud NAT, subnet routes, or gateway capacity changed during the incident.

Run the comparison without changing the path

  1. Record the workload’s source address, destination address, destination port, protocol, and namespace.
  2. Run the same connection test from a controlled GCE virtual machine in the relevant network or region.
  3. Compare the two attempts over the same short time window.
  4. If only the workload fails, inspect CNI behavior, NetworkPolicy, and masquerading. If both fail, inspect VPC firewall rules, routes, NAT, and the destination service.

The comparison narrows the fault domain; it does not by itself identify the exact rule. Use the corresponding logs and path test for attribution.

Inspect live evidence during an active incident

Stream current flows

In GKE environments using Dataplane V2, Hubble CLI’s hubble observe command can stream current flows and expose drop reasons. Filter the output to the affected namespace, pod, node, destination, or port so that unrelated traffic does not hide the event. Capture a bounded interval around the symptom and save the output with its time zone.

Use metrics to quantify the event

GKE Dataplane V2 metrics answer what is happening and at what scale. Compare the affected workload with a healthy workload, and compare the incident interval with the preceding baseline. Look for a matching change in drops, resets, rejected connections, or latency rather than treating a single spike as proof of cause.

Use policy logs to explain an in-cluster block

NetworkPolicy logs are useful when the question is why a connection was blocked inside GKE. Confirm the policy, namespace, source identity, destination, and action. A policy log can explain a deny, but it does not describe traffic that never reached the policy layer.

Investigate historical or intermittent failures

Live-flow output is easy to miss when the incident is intermittent. For retrospective analysis, query NetworkPolicy logs and VPC Flow Logs in Cloud Logging or the equivalent central log system. Start with the exact incident window, then widen it only when necessary.

Flow records are especially useful for checking whether a connection was accepted or rejected, which interface or subnet handled it, and whether the observed path matches the intended design. They are not application access logs: they normally cannot tell you which authenticated user made a request or what response body the application returned.

Capture enough context for later correlation

  • Keep the original alert ID and incident timestamp.
  • Record resource, interface, subnet, cluster, node, and account or project identifiers.
  • Preserve the source and destination addresses, ports, protocol, direction, and policy or firewall action.
  • Note deployment, route, firewall, NAT, and policy changes made near the start time.

AWS Networking Best Practices describes VPC Flow Logs as supporting more than 40 custom log-format fields. The page does not state a publication year. Fields described there include source and destination, ports, protocols, TCP flags, traffic path, and direction; actual field names and availability depend on the platform and configuration.

How to correlate network alerts and flow logs

Normalize time first

Convert all timestamps to one time zone, preferably UTC, and account for ingestion delay. Use the same incident window in every query. A graph timestamp may represent event time, collection time, or display-bucket time, so inspect the raw record when precision matters.

Use a stable traffic key

AWS’s documented example for correlating Network Firewall logs with VPC Flow Logs uses the timestamp and the five-tuple:

  • source IP address
  • destination IP address
  • source port
  • destination port
  • transport protocol

Add resource or interface identifiers, direction, path, and the policy or firewall action when available. Do not join records solely because their charts overlap or because they share a destination port.

Interpret the two records together

Network Firewall logs can show whether traffic was allowed, denied, or alerted and identify the relevant rule group. VPC Flow Logs add VPC context such as subnet, instance, or network interface. Together they can show which resource initiated a flow, the path it took, and the firewall decision.

Keep application and network layers separate

AWS VPC Lattice access logs describe service-level requests, identities, latency, response codes, and authorization decisions. Flow Logs describe network-level IP exchanges and whether traffic was accepted or rejected by security groups. A successful TCP exchange can still produce an application authorization failure, and an application error can occur after the network path is healthy. Correlate both layers instead of substituting one for the other.

Centralize without losing local coverage

For broad AWS multi-account visibility, deliver logs to a centralized archive and query them centrally. Transit Gateway Flow Logs provide a view of traffic crossing that gateway, but they do not capture traffic that remains inside a single VPC. Keep VPC-level flow logging for intra-VPC coverage.

Validate that the fix actually worked

  1. Reproduce the original path. Use the same source class, destination, protocol, and port that generated the incident.
  2. Run a simulated Connectivity Test. In GKE and VPC investigations, use the test to check whether the configured path is statically allowed and to identify a firewall, route, or node drop point.
  3. Perform a real transaction. A simulation does not generate application traffic. Make a controlled request or connection attempt and record its result.
  4. Check the service metric. Confirm that the relevant drop, reset, error, latency, or success-rate metric returned to its expected range.
  5. Watch for recurrence. Keep the same queries open for at least one normal observation interval and verify that the old symptom does not return.

Use both simulation and live metrics where applicable: the simulation answers whether the configured path should work, while telemetry answers whether real traffic is working now.

Reduce alert noise without hiding evidence

Begin with the business outcome that users experience, then connect it to infrastructure alarms. AWS gives call-setup success for a mobile calling application and page speed for a website as examples of outcome metrics. Supporting infrastructure metrics can explain degradation, but they should not replace the user-facing signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Associate selected alarms with the affected application and its runbook so that an on-call operator receives context and an approved next action. Document suppression rules, their duration, and the evidence required to reopen a suppressed alert.

Correlation is not automatic across products. Palo Alto Networks documents a product-specific Prisma SD-WAN event engine that can correlate, suppress, and escalate events according to administrator-configured policies. Its example groups related VPN-down events into a Secure Fabric Link incident and suppresses the original list. Treat that as an example of explicit event policy, not as a guarantee that unrelated monitoring tools will deduplicate symptoms.

Choose tools by operational coverage

When evaluating a monitoring stack, compare the following dimensions rather than counting dashboards:

Decision axis Questions to ask
Operational question Does the tool show scale and trend, a policy decision, a traffic path, a live flow, or synthetic reachability?
Signal timing Is data near-real-time, delayed, or historical? What is the collection and ingestion interval?
Scope Does it cover a host, cluster, VPC, transit gateway, hybrid link, or application layer?
Correlation keys Can records be joined with timestamps, five-tuples, resource IDs, request IDs, identities, or trace IDs?
Attribution Does it identify a rule, route, interface, workload, account, or only a symptom?
Coverage boundaries Does it include cross-account and cross-cloud traffic, or only one administrative domain?
Retention and cost How long are records retained, at what detail, and what charges apply to collection, storage, and queries?
Recovery validation Can it run a path test, synthetic check, or service-level confirmation after remediation?

A tool with broad dashboard coverage is not necessarily better if its records cannot be correlated or retained for the incident window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for cloud-specific lifecycle changes

Log names, fields, availability, retention, pricing, and migration paths are vendor-specific and can change. Microsoft’s current Azure Network Watcher documentation states that NSG Flow Logs retire on September 30, 2027, that creating new NSG Flow Logs is no longer supported, and that users should migrate to virtual network flow logs. The same documentation describes collection at one-minute intervals. Recheck Microsoft’s live migration guidance before implementing or updating an Azure runbook because lifecycle status can change.

Do not assume that a field or interval documented for one cloud exists in another. Record the platform, region, edition, and configuration alongside every operational claim in your runbook.

Worked troubleshooting paths

TCP resets reported by users

  1. Scope the service, source populations, destination port, and first-reset time.
  2. Use the service metric to determine whether resets are isolated to one region, workload, or deployment.
  3. Stream live flows with hubble observe if the affected path is in GKE; inspect reset or drop reasons.
  4. Query VPC or equivalent flow logs using the five-tuple and compare firewall decisions.
  5. Run a path simulation and a controlled request after remediation, then confirm reset and success-rate metrics.

DNS concurrent-limit rejections

  1. Identify which clients and resolver endpoint report the rejection and whether it is continuous.
  2. Compare cluster workloads with the GCE virtual-machine baseline.
  3. Check cluster DNS metrics and policy logs for an internal restriction; check VPC, NAT, and resolver-path logs for an external limit.
  4. Correlate records by time, source, destination, port, and protocol before changing limits.
  5. Validate with a real name-resolution request and the service’s success metric.

Intermittent packet drops

  1. Extend the query window around each occurrence and account for log ingestion delay.
  2. Use historical NetworkPolicy and VPC Flow Logs rather than relying only on a live stream.
  3. Compare accepted and rejected records for the same five-tuple and resource path.
  4. Check whether the drops remain inside one VPC, cross a transit gateway, or occur at a firewall or route.
  5. After the change, run a synthetic or controlled probe repeatedly and watch the drop-rate metric.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Opening every dashboard at once: write the next question first, then choose one signal that can answer it.
  • Joining by timestamp alone: add the five-tuple and resource identifiers.
  • Mixing event and ingestion time: normalize time zones and inspect raw timestamps.
  • Assuming a passing path test proves service health: perform a real transaction and check the service metric.
  • Assuming flow logs explain application behavior: add application access logs or service telemetry.
  • Assuming transit logs cover every path: retain VPC-level logs for traffic that never crosses the transit gateway.
  • Suppressing alerts without policy: document the correlation condition, suppression duration, and recovery signal.
  • Copying a vendor field or lifecycle date into a universal runbook: label the platform and verify current documentation before each major change.

Incident checklist

  • Service, users, source, destination, protocol, port, symptom, and UTC time window recorded
  • Cluster, VPC, transit, hybrid, and application tiers considered
  • Baseline test performed where a cluster-versus-network comparison is needed
  • Correct signal selected for live, historical, policy, path, or application evidence
  • Records correlated with timestamps, five-tuple, resource IDs, and action
  • Cross-layer differences between network flow and application access records documented
  • Path simulation and real transaction completed after remediation
  • Recovery metric watched for recurrence
  • Vendor-specific retention, fields, collection interval, and lifecycle status verified
