First determine which telemetry you expected: a span emitted by the Claude SDK, a server span delivered by the Claude platform, or both. Then inspect registration order, tracing flags, destination health, context propagation, and duplicate instrumentation. The fastest way to separate causes is to compare each span’s service.name, span kind, instrumentation scope, trace ID, and span ID before changing application code.
Why Claude spans can be missing or duplicated
Claude OpenTelemetry data can come from two independent layers. The SDK creates spans inside your application process. API tracing creates spans on the Claude platform and sends them to destinations configured for your workspace. When both are enabled, one request can legitimately produce two records with the same operation name. That is not automatically an exporter bug.

Missing data has several different meanings:
- The SDK never emitted a span because the tracer provider was registered too late, tracing was disabled, or the SDK instrumentation was unavailable.
- The SDK emitted a span, but an exporter, collector, or backend dropped it.
- The Claude platform created an API span, but its destination is unhealthy or outside the configured workspace scope.
- The request happened without the parent context, so the span exists but appears as a separate root trace.
- A span was delivered more than once because delivery is at least once and retries are possible.
Anthropic describes export as best effort: exported spans are not guaranteed to be a complete record of API usage. For complete API-key usage accounting, use the Usage API rather than treating your tracing backend as an invoice or request ledger.

Understand the two emission layers
| Layer | Where the span is created | Typical identity | What it proves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude SDK | Your application process | Span kind CLIENT; instrumentation scope such as com.anthropic.sdk.<language>; operation commonly anthropic.messages.create |
Your instrumented process initiated an SDK request and attempted to export its telemetry. |
| Claude API | Claude’s platform | service.name = claude-platform; span kind SERVER; instrumentation scope com.anthropic.claude-platform |
The platform received and processed an API request, subject to destination delivery. |
Both layers can describe the same request. Their operation names may match, while their span IDs, kinds, scopes, and services differ. Treat the identity fields as the source of truth; a matching name alone cannot establish duplication.

Read span identity before changing configuration
Open one suspected record in your backend and capture these fields:
- Trace ID: identifies the distributed trace.
- Span ID: identifies one span within that trace.
- Parent span ID: shows whether the Claude operation is nested under your application work.
service.name: separates your application or SDK-side service fromclaude-platform.- Span kind: SDK request spans are
CLIENT; API request spans areSERVER. - Instrumentation scope: look for
com.anthropic.sdk.<language>orcom.anthropic.claude-platform. - Start and end timestamps: help reveal retries, delayed delivery, and whether two records overlap.
Use this classification:
| Observed records | Most likely explanation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Same trace ID and same span ID appear more than once | Repeated delivery or backend-side duplication | Inspect collector and destination retry handling; deduplicate on both IDs. |
Different IDs, one CLIENT SDK scope and one SERVER Claude-platform scope |
SDK and API tracing are both enabled | Keep both only if you need both views; otherwise disable one path. |
| Different IDs from the same SDK scope | Duplicate SDK instrumentation, an application retry, or two actual calls | Search initialization code and request logs; check whether another library instruments the SDK. |
| One span exists but has no expected parent | Context was not active when the SDK call ran | Repair parent-span scope and W3C propagation. |
Run a controlled diagnostic sequence
Use one deliberately triggered request rather than a busy production stream. Record the request time, application trace ID (if known), SDK version, OpenTelemetry dependency versions, and the destination being tested. This gives every subsequent search a bounded window.
- Define the expected record. Decide whether you are looking for an SDK client span, an API server span, a tool span, or the parent application span. Write down whether SDK tracing, API tracing, or both are enabled.
- Check identity fields. Search for the operation name, then verify service, kind, scope, trace ID, and span ID. Do not label records as duplicates from the operation name alone.
- Prove local SDK emission. Temporarily route a test run to a console exporter, register the tracer provider before the first call that should be traced, and make one request. Look for
anthropic.messages.create. - Prove platform delivery. In the Claude Console, confirm that the destination covers the relevant workspace and reports Healthy. Send another controlled request and search the backend for
service.name=claude-platform. - Repair context. Execute the SDK call inside the intended parent span and ensure a W3C trace-context propagator is registered.
- Check transport behavior. Verify that the collector or exporter accepts the payload, supports gzip when configured, and returns promptly. Save any timeout, TLS, DNS, HTTP 408, 429, or 5xx error.
- Freeze versions. Pin the Claude SDK and OpenTelemetry dependencies while diagnosing, and capture the instrumentation scope and version with an example span.
Fix missing SDK spans
Register the tracer provider early enough
The SDK uses the tracer provider your application registers. Registration must happen before the first call that should be traced. Put provider setup in application startup code, before request handling or any initialization path that can invoke the Claude client. Registering after a request has already occurred cannot retroactively create that span.

For a smoke test, use a temporary console exporter. A console record proves that the SDK emitted a span locally; it does not prove that your production collector or backend is healthy. Remove or restrict the console exporter after the test so sensitive request metadata is not written to application logs.
Check the SDK installation and tracing flag
- Confirm that the Claude SDK version in the running process is the version you believe you installed.
- Verify that
ANTHROPIC_OPEN_TELEMETRYis not set tofalse. Check the effective environment inside the process or container, not only the shell used to launch it. - Ensure the instrumented SDK is the one your code actually calls; multiple environments can load different package versions.
- Make one request after setup and search for the expected operation name, commonly
anthropic.messages.create.
Interpret the console test
| Console test result | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No span appears | Emission is failing before the exporter path. | Recheck provider registration order, SDK version, and ANTHROPIC_OPEN_TELEMETRY. |
| Span appears locally but not in the backend | SDK instrumentation works; export or ingestion is failing. | Inspect exporter configuration, collector logs, network policy, payload encoding, and backend acceptance. |
| Span appears with an unexpected scope | A different instrumentation library or SDK version produced it. | Inspect dependency resolution and disable competing instrumentation. |
Fix missing API spans
API spans are delivered from the Claude platform, so application-side console output cannot prove that API tracing is configured. Open the Claude Console and inspect the destination’s delivery status. Confirm that the destination covers the workspace where the request was made and that its status is Healthy. A failing destination exposes an error in the Console; preserve that error text and timestamp before changing settings.
After correcting the destination, send one controlled request and query your backend for service.name = claude-platform. Search by a narrow time range and, where available, the trace context associated with the request. If the platform span arrives later than the application span, account for delivery latency before concluding it is absent.

A platform span that never appears does not prove that the API request did not happen. Export is best effort, and a destination can fail after the platform has processed the request. Use the Usage API when you need authoritative API-key usage accounting.
Separate real duplicates from repeated delivery
Same trace ID and span ID
Identical trace and span IDs represent the same logical span delivered more than once. Anthropic’s API tracing delivery is at least once: retries or repeated delivery can cause a destination to receive the same span more than once. Configure your backend’s span identity handling to treat the pair (trace_id, span_id) as the deduplication key. Do not deduplicate by operation name or timestamp; two legitimate requests can share both.
Different IDs from SDK and API layers
An SDK CLIENT span and a Claude-platform SERVER span can both be correct. Their scopes identify the producing layer. Keep both when you need client latency, local retries, and platform-side processing in one investigation. If your dashboards require one request row, join the records by trace context and retain the layer fields rather than deleting one blindly.

Different IDs from the same layer
Inspect application logs and initialization code. A second library may instrument the Claude SDK, or the application may have issued a retry that created a new span. Ensure the SDK is instrumented through one path only. If an auto-instrumentation package and manual instrumentation both wrap the same client, disable one of them. If the IDs correspond to separate attempts, retain both and mark the retry relationship in your backend instead of treating it as exporter duplication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reconnect Claude spans to the parent trace
Keep the SDK call inside the parent span’s scope
Start the intended application span, make the Claude SDK call while that span is active, and end the parent only after the call has completed. Calling the SDK from a detached task, a background queue without context transfer, or a newly created root context produces a valid span that is not nested under the trace you expected.
Register W3C trace-context propagation
Register a W3C trace-context propagator so the SDK can write traceparent headers. Without propagation, the platform may create a server span with no relationship to your application trace. Verify in an exported record that the SDK span has the intended parent and that the outbound request carries the propagated context where your stack permits inspection.
Best Value
Pass context through tool runners
For Go tools, create tool spans from the context supplied by the tool runner. Do not replace that context with a fresh background context. The runner’s context carries the active trace; using it keeps tool work and the Claude call in the same distributed trace.
Check exporters, collectors, and destination retries
Once a local console exporter proves emission, inspect the path between the SDK or Claude platform and your backend:
- Confirm the collector or exporter endpoint, port, and protocol match the running configuration.
- Verify that the receiver accepts the payload format and gzip encoding if compression is enabled.
- Check that the collector acknowledges promptly. A timeout can cause the sender to retry even if the first attempt eventually arrived.
- Look for connection, TLS, DNS, HTTP 408, HTTP 429, and HTTP 5xx errors. Anthropic documents retries after these conditions for API-tracing destinations.
- Inspect queue limits, memory pressure, shutdown behavior, and backend ingestion errors at the request’s timestamp.
- Compare accepted and rejected counts in the collector with records visible in the backend.
Retries explain why a destination can receive the same span more than once. They also explain why a span can appear late. Preserve transport logs before rotating them; the status code and elapsed time often distinguish a destination problem from an instrumentation problem.
Use a compact decision table during incidents
| Symptom | Evidence to collect | Likely fault domain | Remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| No SDK span anywhere | Provider registration point, SDK version, effective environment flag | Application instrumentation | Register earlier, verify installation, and ensure ANTHROPIC_OPEN_TELEMETRY is not false. |
| SDK span in console, absent in backend | Exporter response, collector logs, network and TLS errors | Export or ingestion | Fix endpoint or receiver, then repeat a controlled request. |
No claude-platform span |
Claude Console destination scope and health; delivery error | API destination configuration | Correct workspace coverage or destination failure, then retest. |
| Two records with identical trace and span IDs | Raw IDs, delivery attempts, backend ingest logs | At-least-once delivery | Deduplicate on trace ID plus span ID and retain one canonical record. |
| Two records with SDK and platform identities | service.name, kind, scope, parent IDs |
Two enabled tracing layers | Keep or disable one layer according to the observability goal. |
| Span is a separate root | Parent span ID, active context, propagated traceparent |
Context propagation | Call the SDK within the parent scope and register W3C propagation. |
| Unexpected second SDK span | Initialization paths, auto-instrumentation list, request/retry logs | Duplicate instrumentation or application retry | Disable one instrumentation path or annotate genuine attempts as retries. |
Keep upgrades from breaking your diagnosis
Anthropic’s OpenTelemetry export and schema are beta. SDK versions can rename spans, attributes, options, or environment variables. Pin the Claude SDK and OpenTelemetry dependencies while investigating. When upgrading, treat the change as a telemetry migration: capture a known-good span before the upgrade, compare its operation name, scope, kind, attributes, and parent relationship afterward, and update dashboards and queries deliberately.
Prefer queries based on stable identity fields where possible. For example, use service.name, span kind, and instrumentation scope to classify records, then use operation names for detail. Record the SDK version and scope alongside saved examples so a future schema change is visible rather than mistaken for data loss.
A repeatable production runbook
- Choose one request and record its UTC timestamp, application trace ID, workspace, SDK version, and enabled tracing layers.
- Search the backend for the operation name and classify every result by service, kind, scope, trace ID, and span ID.
- If no SDK record exists, run the console-exporter smoke test and verify registration order and the environment flag.
- If no platform record exists, check Claude Console destination coverage and health, then capture any delivery error.
- If records are duplicated, compare IDs first; apply trace-plus-span deduplication only when both IDs match.
- If records are detached, inspect parent IDs and propagation, then move the call into the active parent context.
- Review collector and destination responses for timeout, connection, TLS, DNS, 408, 429, or 5xx retries.
- Pin versions, save a representative span from each layer, and update queries only after confirming the beta schema’s current names.
This sequence distinguishes missing emission, exporter loss, destination failure, context detachment, legitimate two-layer visibility, and repeated delivery without relying on a span name alone.
