How to troubleshoot missing Dolby Atmos or surround sound on a Sony system

When a Sony TV, soundbar, or receiver does not show Dolby Atmos or surround sound, the failure is usually somewhere in the signal chain: the title or source may not contain the format, a player may not output it, the HDMI route may be limited to ARC, or a TV/receiver setting may be reducing it to stereo or ordinary Dolby Audio. Trace the exact route from content to speakers, verify each device and port, then test one change at a time.

What must be true for Atmos or surround sound to arrive

A Dolby Atmos logo on a Sony product means the hardware can decode or reproduce a supported Atmos signal; it does not mean every app, title, disc, USB file, or HDMI route will provide one. Sony says supported formats differ by audio device. A complete chain has to support the selected content and the way that content is connected.

Signal stage What to verify Typical failure
Content The exact title, disc, file, or broadcast includes Atmos or a multichannel mix. The system correctly reports ordinary Dolby Audio or stereo because that is what the source supplied.
Playback device The player, console, set-top box, or app can output the format on its selected output. An Atmos-capable player delivers a lower format from a particular app or route.
HDMI path Ports, cable rating, ARC/eARC capability, and direct connections match the desired signal. The TV return link cannot carry the source codec, or a cable is connected to a non-ARC port.
Television BRAVIA speakers are set to Audio System and eARC, pass-through, and digital-output options are appropriate. The TV decodes, downmixes, or otherwise changes the audio before sending it onward.
Soundbar or receiver The input accepts the codec and the receiver’s speaker pattern and decoding mode match the installed speakers. The unit receives a signal but does not engage Atmos or the expected surround channels.

Diagnose the route you actually use. A TV-to-soundbar eARC connection, a TV-to-soundbar ARC connection, and a source connected directly to a soundbar or receiver are different paths with different limits.

Start by documenting the exact setup

Before changing settings, write down the Sony TV model, soundbar or receiver model, source device, app or disc, title, and every HDMI connection. Note which HDMI sockets are labelled ARC or eARC and whether the audio unit’s front display or control app identifies the incoming format. This prevents a menu instruction for one model from being applied to another.

Use a known, compatible test

Replay the same title after every change. If you have a file whose format is available only through eARC, Sony suggests using Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio and checking the audio system’s display. A successful display of that test format confirms that the eARC link carried that file; it does not prove that a streaming title or another source route carries Atmos.

Do not assume an Atmos-capable player supports every service

Sony states that its Blu-ray Disc players do not support network streaming services in Dolby Atmos. A player can therefore handle an Atmos disc while delivering a different format from an integrated streaming service. Test the same title from the source you intend to use rather than using the player’s product logo as evidence.

Choose and verify the HDMI route

Route Use it when Limits and checks
TV HDMI eARC/ARC to audio-system HDMI OUT eARC/ARC The TV is the hub for built-in apps, broadcasts, and devices connected to the TV. Both endpoints must support the required feature. An ARC-only soundbar remains limited to ARC specifications even when the TV has eARC.
Source HDMI directly to soundbar or receiver HDMI input The audio system accepts the source codec and has a suitable HDMI input, especially when the TV lacks eARC or cannot pass the format. Check the audio unit’s codec support and video pass-through capability; the source must be connected to an input that accepts its signal.
TV ARC to an ARC-only audio device Only ARC-level return audio is required and both products support the format within ARC’s limits. This route cannot gain eARC bandwidth by adding an eARC TV. Replacing a cable alone cannot change an ARC endpoint into an eARC endpoint.

Confirm the eARC capability at both ends

Sony describes enhanced Audio Return Channel as an HDMI return path for high-quality sound to receivers and soundbars. Its eARC support article, modified August 31, 2026, lists bandwidth of up to 37 Mbps and identifies formats such as Dolby Atmos with Dolby TrueHD and uncompressed multichannel audio as eARC use cases. Both connected devices must support eARC to use those capabilities.

Connect the TV socket marked eARC/ARC to the audio system socket marked HDMI OUT eARC/ARC. If either socket is a normal HDMI input or output, the return path will not work as intended. Read the model manuals for the exact port labels and eARC switch.

Use an appropriate HDMI cable

Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC data transfer. In a BRAVIA guide for a high-quality external-source connection, Sony recommends a Premium High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 48 Gbps. Those ratings describe the cited connection guidance; they do not guarantee Atmos when the source codec, endpoint, or settings are unsupported.

Set the BRAVIA television to pass audio correctly

Menu names vary by BRAVIA generation and software. Use the television’s Help Guide for the model-specific path, then check these labels:

  1. Set the TV speakers or audio output to Audio System when a soundbar or receiver is handling sound.
  2. Set the eARC option to Auto when both devices support eARC and the model provides that choice.
  3. Review Pass-through mode and Digital audio output. Choose the pass-through or highest compatible option rather than a setting that intentionally converts the signal, while following the TV manual’s description.
  4. Save the change, power-cycle the TV and audio system if the connection does not renegotiate, and replay the identical test source.

If sound disappeared after a soundbar or receiver update, verify that the TV itself supports eARC. Sony advises turning eARC off on the soundbar or receiver when the TV is not eARC-compatible; the switch location differs by product.

Check what the source is really sending

Verify the title, app, and output setting

Look at the title’s audio-language or format information and the playback device’s audio-output setting. A source may offer several tracks, and selecting a standard track will not produce Atmos. Confirm that the source device is not set to PCM stereo or another deliberate downmix when a bitstream or automatic option is required by its manual.

Keep Sony’s BRAVIA codec limitation in context

Sony says BRAVIA TVs do not support Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio from USB files, video streaming services, or broadcasts. That statement applies to those codecs and routes; it does not establish that every form of Atmos streaming is unsupported. If a file uses one of those codecs, connect a compatible playback device directly to the soundbar or receiver, or use a route and format the model supports.

Inspect the audio-system indication

The receiver or soundbar’s front panel, information screen, or control app is more useful than the TV’s generic “Dolby” label. Record exactly what it reports while the known test is playing. “Dolby Audio” can be a valid lower-format signal, a result of the title’s available track, or evidence that a device changed the stream; the indication alone does not identify which stage caused the change.

Configure a Sony multichannel receiver

Tell the receiver what speakers are physically installed. In the speaker-pattern or speaker-configuration menu, select the actual layout, not the layout printed on the box. Sony’s Atmos examples include a 5.1.2 pattern with top-middle speakers or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. That is an example, not a requirement for every room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the receiver’s automatic format decoder

For the Atmos setup example, Sony directs users to select A.F.D. (Auto Format Decoding). Other models may use different names or provide additional modes. Follow the receiver’s manual for the model-specific decoding choices, then replay the same source and check the input-format display.

Match the reported layout to the wiring

If the receiver reports a compatible signal but height or rear speakers remain silent, verify that the speaker pattern matches the terminals and speakers connected. A receiver cannot route top or surround channels to speakers it has been told are absent. Recheck polarity and secure connections only after confirming the software configuration.

A controlled troubleshooting procedure

  1. Freeze the test case. Choose one title or file known to contain the target format, note the source device and input, and keep it unchanged during diagnosis.
  2. Record the current indication. Write down the exact format shown by the soundbar or receiver, not merely whether the TV displays a Dolby logo.
  3. Trace the cables. Verify the TV’s eARC/ARC port, the audio unit’s HDMI OUT eARC/ARC port, and any direct source-to-audio connection. Remove accidental connections to ordinary HDMI sockets.
  4. Confirm capabilities. Check the manuals for eARC, ARC, codec support, HDMI inputs, and video pass-through on every device in the route.
  5. Set the TV output. Select Audio System, review eARC Auto, pass-through, and digital-audio-output options, and apply the model’s recommended settings.
  6. Test the source output. Make sure the title’s Atmos or multichannel track is selected and the source device is not forcing stereo or an incompatible conversion.
  7. Test an alternate route. If the TV cannot pass the source format, connect the playback device directly to a soundbar or receiver HDMI input that supports it. If the direct route works, the limitation is in the TV return path or its settings rather than the speakers.
  8. Check receiver configuration. Set the installed speaker pattern and, where applicable, A.F.D. Auto Format Decoding. Replay the frozen test.
  9. Change one variable at a time. After each adjustment, replay the same source and record the new indication. This identifies the stage that restored or lost the format.
  10. Update and retest. If even ordinary audio fails, check physical connections, Audio System selection, and current TV and audio-system software. Sony notes that menus vary by model and recommends updating the TV and audio system during troubleshooting.

Symptoms and the most useful next check

Symptom Next diagnostic action
The soundbar says “Dolby Audio” instead of Atmos. Verify the selected title’s track and the source output, then check whether the route is ARC-only or whether the TV is converting the signal.
There is no sound after enabling eARC. Confirm Audio System output, use the correct eARC/ARC sockets, power-cycle both devices, and turn eARC off on the audio unit if the TV does not support it.
A disc works but a streaming app does not. Check that the specific player and service support Atmos; Sony says its Blu-ray Disc players do not support network streaming services in Dolby Atmos.
A USB file or broadcast loses its high-resolution track. Check the codec. Sony specifically excludes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio from BRAVIA USB, streaming-service, and broadcast playback.
Atmos appears but height or rear speakers are quiet. Match the receiver’s speaker pattern to the installed layout and verify the source is actually multichannel.
Everything became stereo after a firmware update. Recheck Audio System, pass-through, digital-output, eARC, and source-output settings; then update both devices and retest the same title.

When a direct source connection is the better solution

Use the source-to-soundbar or source-to-receiver route when the TV lacks eARC, the TV cannot pass the source’s codec, or the audio system has an HDMI input that accepts the source directly. Confirm that the audio device also passes the required video format to the TV. This route avoids relying on the television’s return-audio implementation, but it does not bypass codec limits inside the source or audio unit.

Keep the TV-to-audio eARC route when the TV’s built-in apps are central to your setup and both endpoints support the formats you need. The choice is determined by endpoint capabilities, codec support, HDMI inputs, video pass-through, and cable/port requirements—not by the presence of an Atmos badge alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to seek model-specific support

Stop changing settings and gather the exact model numbers when the same known-compatible source fails on both the eARC and direct routes, or when ordinary audio remains absent after checking connections and Audio System output. Sony’s menus and supported formats vary by model and region. Provide support with the source title, app or disc, codec shown by the source, HDMI port labels, cable type, firmware versions, and the format displayed by the audio system. That information lets the manual or support team distinguish an unsupported route from a defective port or device.

Bottom line

Find where the format disappears instead of replacing equipment at random. Confirm the content and source first, use eARC only when both endpoints support it, connect the correct HDMI ports with an appropriate cable, set the BRAVIA to Audio System with compatible pass-through options, and configure the receiver for the speakers actually installed. A direct HDMI input on the soundbar or receiver is the practical fallback when the TV cannot pass the required codec.
