To troubleshoot low FPS and stuttering, reproduce the problem in the same game scene, record frame-rate and frame-time clues, then test one relevant change at a time. Check that Windows is using the intended GPU, verify display settings, and adjust game graphics settings methodically. A hitch can have several causes; the symptom alone is not enough to identify a faulty component.
Start with a repeatable baseline
Choose a scene where the problem reliably occurs and use it for each test. Record the game, resolution, graphics preset, display mode, approximate average FPS, when the stutter happens, and whether it began after a game, Windows, or graphics-driver update. Keep other settings unchanged while comparing results.

Use an available performance overlay to gather clues. AMD’s overlay can report FPS, CPU and GPU utilization, clocks, temperature, power, VRAM, and system RAM. NVIDIA documents an overlay with FPS, clock speeds, and GPU temperature. These readings can help describe what happens, but no single reading diagnoses every PC.
FPS is only part of the picture: a game can report a reasonable average while delivering frames unevenly. AMD Game Advisor can show average FPS, 95th-percentile FPS, and frame-time graphs, and provide recommendations. AMD says it supports most DirectX 9, 11, and 12 and Vulkan titles on Radeon RX 400-series and newer, subject to configuration requirements. See AMD’s Game Advisor documentation for availability and details.

Check which GPU the game is using
On a Windows 11 PC with more than one GPU, confirm the game is assigned to the intended graphics processor. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, and inspect its graphics preference. Windows lists “Let Windows decide,” “Power saving,” and “High performance.” Save a per-app change and restart the game. Menu wording may vary by Windows version. Microsoft’s instructions are at Change graphics performance preferences in Windows 11.
Separate game FPS from display refresh rate
FPS is how quickly the game renders frames; refresh rate is how often the display updates. Check that Windows and the game are set to a supported refresh rate for your monitor rather than assuming one value represents the other.
Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. Microsoft recommends turning DRR off if a favorite game appears to run at a lower refresh rate. This is a display-behavior check, not a universal fix for low rendered FPS. See Microsoft’s DRR guidance.
Match windowed-game optimizations to the game
Windows 11’s “Optimizations for windowed games” is intended for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles running windowed or borderless. Microsoft says the feature can improve performance for compatible games by moving them to a newer presentation model; it can also be disabled per app. It is not a general performance switch for full-screen games or other APIs.

- NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors: The all-new Ampere SM brings 2X the FP32 throughput and improved power efficiency.
- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.
- OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)
If your game and display mode fit those conditions, test the setting for that app and restart the game after changing it. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions explain the option and its scope: Optimizations for windowed games.
Test graphics settings one at a time
If the same scene shows weak or uneven performance under the current rendering load, try one lower-cost graphics setting, then repeat the scene and compare. AMD’s examples include lowering the overall quality preset, antialiasing, ambient occlusion, render scale, or resolution. For instance, test High instead of Ultra, or reduce render scale while leaving other options alone. These are diagnostic experiments, not guaranteed fixes.
Note whether average FPS improves, frame-time behavior becomes steadier, or both change. If several settings are altered together, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered. AMD describes its tool and example recommendations in its Game Advisor support page.
Investigate updates and shader-cache behavior without assuming a fix
If the stutter is new, check the game maker’s release notes and the graphics vendor’s supported driver channel for relevant changes. A driver update is not a guaranteed remedy for general stuttering. NVIDIA notes that shader compilation can cause gameplay stutter and that installing a new driver deletes the shader cache; first-run stutters after an update may therefore occur while shaders are compiled again. This is one possible explanation in applicable cases, not a diagnosis for every hitch. See NVIDIA’s shader-cache reference.

For a game’s DirectX compatibility or stated requirement, check the installed version with DxDiag. Microsoft says DirectX is included with Windows 10 and 11, and the latest version for those Windows releases is delivered through Windows Update. A game can still have its own compatibility requirements. Do not download an unofficial standalone “DirectX updater.” Microsoft’s DirectX guidance is at How to install the latest version of DirectX.
Microsoft’s driver update and rollback instructions concern flickering or scrambled display behavior, not a general low-FPS or stutter fix. Use them for that limited display-symptom context rather than treating them as a universal performance remedy: Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows.

If the problem persists, gather the game name, Windows version, CPU and GPU models, RAM amount, resolution, game settings, graphics-driver version, and a short description of the repeatable scene and observed metrics. Note whether the issue affects one game or several and whether it followed a specific change.
There is no universal GPU-utilization, temperature, RAM, or FPS threshold that identifies the cause on every system. Seek game-specific support or qualified repair advice if you see crashes, visual artifacts, device errors, or persistent symptoms that the measurements do not explain. Do not buy a GPU, RAM, SSD, cooling part, or monitor on the symptom alone; first establish a bottleneck and confirm that any replacement is compatible with the PC and the game.
