Try Amazon’s documented forced restart first: hold the power button until a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank, then keep holding it for 40 seconds before releasing. If the Kindle responds, check brightness, dark mode, font and layout controls. Treat a factory reset as a later troubleshooting step because it erases personal data and unsynced downloads. For persistent blank screens, frozen pages or lines, check the warranty for your exact model and contact Amazon support before buying a replacement or attempting any repair.
Identify what kind of display problem you have
The next step depends on whether the Kindle is actually unresponsive or is displaying content that is merely difficult to read. Describe the symptom precisely when you contact support; “the screen is broken” does not tell an agent whether the problem is intermittent software behavior, a setting, or a physical fault.

Frozen or unresponsive screen
A page that will not turn, a menu that will not open, or a screen that appears stuck can be an intermittent performance problem. Amazon says restarting can resolve intermittent issues such as a frozen screen or slow performance. A single freeze therefore does not, by itself, establish that the display needs replacement.
Recommended Free Tools
Note whether the Kindle became responsive again on its own, whether the problem occurs on one book or everywhere, and whether the power button produces any visible change. Those observations do not diagnose the cause, but they help support distinguish a one-time interruption from a persistent fault.

Blank or apparently dead screen
Record whether the Kindle shows any response when you press the power button, whether a power dialog appears, and whether the screen changes after the documented restart. Do not infer a definite cause from blankness alone. The official guidance provides a restart procedure and a support route, not a symptom chart that can reliably distinguish a software fault from physical screen damage.
A blank-looking page can also be confused with an extremely low brightness setting or an altered page background. If the device responds to taps or buttons, check the controls before concluding that the panel has failed. If it does not respond, move to the restart procedure rather than repeatedly pressing the screen.
Text that is too dim, too small or otherwise hard to read
If menus and pages still respond, first check the available display and reading controls. Brightness, dark mode, font size, spacing, margins, orientation and page background can all affect how a page looks. The controls and exact names differ by Kindle model, so use the options presented on your device.
Lines, blotches or persistent visual artifacts
Lines that remain in the same place, ink-like blotches or other artifacts should be documented with a description and, if support requests it, photographs. Their appearance alone does not prove a particular cause. Because Amazon does not publish an official symptom-to-cause chart for these patterns, ask support to assess the device rather than pressing, bending or opening the screen.
Describe whether an artifact appears on every page, whether it moves with the content, and whether it remains after a restart. These are useful observations, not a reason to assign a diagnosis yourself. A fixed line may look different from a rendering problem, but only Amazon can determine the applicable service path.
Perform Amazon’s low-risk forced restart
A restart does not deregister the Kindle or remove your books and account information. It is the appropriate first action for a frozen or slow device and is materially different from a factory reset.
- Press and hold the Kindle’s power button.
- Continue holding until either a power dialog appears or the screen goes blank.
- Keep holding the button for a full 40 seconds, even if the screen changes earlier.
- Release the button and wait for the Kindle to reboot.
Amazon’s documented wording is: “Restart your Kindle to resolve intermittent issues such as a frozen screen or slow performance.” Allow the reboot to finish before trying to turn pages or open menus. If the Kindle works normally afterward, observe whether the same symptom returns; an intermittent recurrence is useful information for support.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not release the button as soon as the screen goes dark. The documented instruction is to continue holding for 40 seconds, then release and wait. Conversely, do not escalate to pressing harder, repeatedly tapping the panel or trying to pry the device open if the restart does not work.
If the device remains unresponsive after the 40-second procedure, do not repeat increasingly forceful actions or attempt to open it. Move to the model and purchase checks below and contact Amazon Customer Service. Tell the agent exactly what happened during the restart, including whether the power dialog appeared or the screen stayed blank.
Correct display settings when the Kindle still responds
Brightness and dark mode
Open the reading toolbar or quick-settings area available on your model and check brightness. A very low light level can look like a dim or blank display in a dark room. If your model offers dark mode, switch it off temporarily to determine whether the page background and text contrast are what you expect.

Make one change at a time and look at a familiar page after each change. That makes it easier to report which setting affected the appearance. If ordinary brightness and the standard background restore readability, the issue was a configuration problem rather than evidence that a replacement panel is needed.
Font and layout controls
Use the text-display controls to test font size, spacing and margins. A large font or wide spacing can make a page appear to contain unusually little text, while a small font can be difficult to read even when the screen is functioning normally. Orientation controls can also change the page arrangement on compatible models.
Return the font, spacing and margins to a comfortable ordinary setting while troubleshooting. If only one book looks unusual, compare it with another title before describing the problem as a Kindle-wide display failure. Keep in mind that layout controls change the way content is arranged; they do not correct a line or blotch that stays fixed on the panel.
Page background and model differences
Some Kindles provide a page-background or color option. Return to the standard background while troubleshooting so that you are comparing the display with its normal configuration. Amazon’s available controls vary by model; do not assume that a setting shown in instructions for one Kindle exists on another.
Settings can correct contrast, readability and layout problems, but they cannot repair a physical panel fault. If a line or blotch remains fixed after you restore ordinary brightness and layout settings, record that result and seek support.
Understand why a factory reset comes later
A restart simply reboots the operating system. A factory reset returns the Kindle to its original settings and removes information from the device. Amazon’s About Amazon guidance distinguishes these actions and advises considering Kindle support before a hard reset.
What a reset removes
- Personal data stored on the Kindle.
- Downloaded content on the device.
- Items that have not synchronized to your account.
- The device’s registration, so it must be registered again after the reset.
Prepare before accepting a reset
Sync the Kindle wherever possible and make sure important purchases or documents are available in your account or original source. Note the exact symptom and the restart and settings checks you have already completed. If the screen is too unstable to sync, tell support that before following a reset instruction.
A reset can be disruptive even when it is technically successful. You will need to register the Kindle again and restore content after it returns to its original settings. Do not treat the reset as a harmless longer restart, and do not use it simply to test whether a visible line disappears.
When to use it
Use the reset command shown in your Kindle’s own settings only when Amazon support or further troubleshooting indicates that it is appropriate. Model-specific menu labels can change, and a reset is not a remedy for a cracked or physically damaged display. Do not perform it merely because a replacement might be available; once deregistered, the device still requires setup and re-registration.

Warranty eligibility depends on the exact model, country, purchase details and circumstances of the fault. The figures below come from Amazon’s US Kindle warranty page, which showed an update date of October 1, 2026; they are not a promise that any particular display complaint will be covered.

| Product category in Amazon’s US warranty table | Published coverage | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Many Kindle e-reader models | One-year limited warranty | The exact device and purchase circumstances determine eligibility. |
| Specified Kindle Kids products | Two-year Worry-Free Guarantee | Applies to the listed Kids products, not automatically to every Kindle. |
| Certain separately sold accessories | 90-day limited coverage | Only the accessories included in the applicable warranty listing qualify. |
Check the warranty terms for the country where you bought the device rather than applying the US periods to another market. Keep your order information and identify the exact Kindle model before opening a support case. Amazon can then determine whether the reported symptom and its cause fall within the applicable terms.
The warranty period is only one part of the decision. A display problem associated with ordinary use may be evaluated differently from one associated with a drop or other impact. Do not promise yourself a free repair or replacement based solely on the age of the Kindle or the number in the table; ask Amazon to assess the specific device.
Contact support before attempting service
Amazon’s safety guidance directs owners to Customer Support when a device needs service. It also warns: “Faulty service may void the warranty.” That warning is especially important when the Kindle may have been dropped or otherwise impacted.

- The exact Kindle model and the country of purchase.
- When the display problem began and whether it is constant or intermittent.
- What appears on screen: a frozen page, blank display, dim text, lines or other artifacts.
- Whether the 40-second restart changed the behavior.
- Which brightness, dark-mode, font or layout settings you checked.
- Whether the device was dropped or otherwise physically damaged.
- Your order or purchase details so the applicable warranty can be checked.
Describe what you can still do: for example, whether the power dialog appears, whether menus respond, and whether the artifact remains in the same location. This gives support useful evidence without requiring you to diagnose the underlying cause.
Do not perform self-repair
Do not press hard on the panel, bend the Kindle, heat it, pry it open or replace internal parts yourself. Amazon specifically directs customers to support for service and cautions that faulty service may void the warranty. If impact damage is suspected, state that fact and wait for the service instructions.
Keep the device in its current condition while you wait for instructions. Avoid actions that could create a new cause of damage and make the original symptom harder to evaluate. If support asks for a photograph, show the whole device and the affected area clearly, but do not dismantle anything to expose the panel.

Replacement through Your Orders
Amazon’s general guidance for damaged, defective or broken items is to open Your Orders and check whether a replacement option is offered for that order. Availability, return instructions and timing depend on the order and current stock. The guidance does not establish a universal Kindle screen-replacement entitlement or a universal replacement price.

If no replacement button appears, that does not prove that no help is available. Contact support with the order information and let Amazon explain whether troubleshooting, warranty service, return handling or another option applies. Conversely, an option displayed in an order is not a reason to skip the data-synchronization and warranty checks.
Repair in the United Kingdom
Amazon UK describes mail-in repair and spare-parts service for select out-of-warranty Amazon devices. It recommends contacting customer service for troubleshooting before seeking repair. This is UK-specific information: it does not establish that every Kindle model, every screen fault or every other country has the same service.
Because repair availability is selective, ask which model and fault are included before sending a device. Do not assume that a spare-parts listing means a complete screen replacement is available for your Kindle or that the same process exists outside the United Kingdom.

When a replacement is reasonable
Consider another device only after support has checked eligibility and explained the available remedy. Compare the offered repair or replacement with the value of your current Kindle, its remaining warranty and any data that still needs to be synchronized. No single replacement model is appropriate for every reader because the current model, budget and desired features are unknown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no universal replacement price established for Kindle display faults. The relevant comparison is the actual option Amazon offers for your order or region versus the cost of another device you would choose. Include the practical consequence of losing unsynchronized content before deciding.
Choose the next step with this decision table
| Option | Use it when | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | The Kindle is frozen, slow or temporarily unresponsive. | Low-risk; hold the power button for the documented 40 seconds. |
| Adjust settings | The device responds but brightness, font, layout or background looks wrong. | Controls vary by model and cannot repair a physical display fault. |
| Factory reset | Later software troubleshooting, after syncing and support consideration. | Removes personal data and unsynced downloads and deregisters the Kindle. |
| Warranty or support request | The problem persists or a defect is suspected. | Terms depend on model, country, purchase and cause of damage. |
| Repair or replacement | Support says service is needed or Your Orders shows eligibility. | Choices are selective and can be regional or order-specific. |
Common mistakes that make the situation worse
- Resetting too early: A factory reset can erase unsynchronized work and downloaded content. Try the restart and responsive-device settings checks first.
- Assuming lines prove a broken panel: The visible pattern alone is not an official diagnosis. Report the symptom and let support assess it.
- Applying the wrong warranty period: One year, two years and 90 days refer to different categories in Amazon’s US table, and other countries can use different terms.
- Opening the Kindle after a drop: Unqualified service can create additional damage and may void warranty coverage.
- Buying a replacement before checking the order: Amazon may show a replacement or return route in Your Orders, but availability is not universal.
- Repeating forceful button or screen actions: The documented restart uses one sustained 40-second hold; pressing the panel or bending the device is not an approved diagnostic step.
- Mixing regional policies: UK repair guidance and US warranty periods should not be treated as one worldwide program.
What to expect after troubleshooting
A Kindle that returns to normal after the forced restart may have experienced an intermittent software issue; continue to note any recurrence. A device that remains blank, frozen or visibly damaged needs an assessment rather than a guessed repair. Keep the model, purchase details and symptom record available, and let Amazon determine whether the next step is further troubleshooting, warranty service, a regional repair option or a replacement offer.
If the problem returns, record when it happened and what the Kindle was doing. A short, factual history—symptom, restart result, settings checked and any impact damage—helps support work efficiently and avoids an unnecessary reset. If the device remains usable, sync important content before any later service step.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I hold the Kindle’s power button?
Amazon’s documented restart procedure says to continue holding the button for 40 seconds after the power dialog appears or the screen goes blank. Release it after the full hold and wait for the reboot.
Will a restart delete my books?
A restart reboots the device; it is not the same as a factory reset. Amazon describes a factory reset as the action that removes personal data, downloaded content and unsynchronized items and deregisters the Kindle.
Should I factory-reset a Kindle with lines on the screen?
Not as a first response. Lines and other artifacts do not have a published official symptom-to-cause chart. Try the low-risk restart, note whether the artifact persists, and contact Amazon before resetting or attempting service.
Can brightness or dark mode fix a blank display?
They can correct a display that only appears too dim or has unexpected contrast when the Kindle still responds. Settings cannot repair a physical panel fault. Controls differ by model, so use the options available on your device.
Is every Kindle covered for one year?
No. Amazon’s US warranty table updated October 1, 2026 lists one-year limited coverage for many Kindle e-readers, a two-year Worry-Free Guarantee for specified Kids products and 90-day coverage for certain separately sold accessories. Your model, country, purchase and circumstances control eligibility.

Can I repair the display myself after a drop?
Amazon directs owners to Customer Support for service and warns that faulty service may void the warranty. Do not press, bend, heat, open or replace parts yourself, especially when impact damage is suspected.
Does Amazon repair Kindles outside the United States?
Amazon UK describes mail-in repair and spare-parts service for select out-of-warranty Amazon devices. That information is regional and does not establish the same service for every Kindle model or every country. Ask local Amazon support what applies to your device.
What if no replacement option appears in Your Orders?
Amazon’s replacement guidance is order-specific. If no option is shown, contact Customer Support with the order and model details. Support can explain whether troubleshooting, warranty service, repair or another route is available.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest first step for a frozen Kindle?
Use Amazon’s forced restart: hold the power button until a dialog appears or the screen goes blank, continue holding for 40 seconds, release, and wait for the reboot.
Does a factory reset erase unsynced Kindle content?
Yes. Amazon says a factory reset removes personal data, downloaded content and items that have not synchronized, then deregisters the device.
Are Kindle display lines automatically covered by warranty?
No. Lines do not establish eligibility or cause. Warranty terms depend on the exact model, country, purchase details and circumstances, so contact Amazon for an assessment.
Can I open my Kindle to fix a damaged screen?
Amazon directs customers to support for service and warns that faulty service may void the warranty. Do not attempt unqualified self-repair.

The Bottom Line
Restart first, using Amazon’s full 40-second hold. If the Kindle responds, restore ordinary brightness and text settings. Do not factory-reset or open the device until you have synced what matters and spoken with Amazon support. Warranty, repair and replacement choices depend on the exact model, country, order and damage circumstances.
