To troubleshoot inconsistent tactile sensor readings, log the raw output with no contact, then during a repeatable load and after unloading. Use that record to distinguish noise, drift, hysteresis, saturation, and uneven sensor-element response before changing filters or recalibrating. The checks below are a general workflow: a capacitive touch button, force-sensitive resistor (FSR), tactile array, and force/torque transducer do not share the same wiring, limits, or calibration procedure. For those details, use the manual for your exact sensor and readout system.
What kind of inconsistency are you seeing?
Use raw readings where possible rather than relying only on a displayed force or touch indicator. Record the sensor output and relevant conditions over time with nothing touching it; then apply and remove a repeatable contact or load and record the response. This helps separate distinct symptoms that can look alike in an application.
- Noise: brief peaks or fluctuations while the sensor is untouched and conditions are stable.
- Drift: the baseline or output continues to change over time, including after a load is applied or removed.
- Hysteresis: the output does not return quickly or completely to its original value after loading and unloading.
- Saturation: the signal or applied load exceeds the device’s measurement range, so the output cannot represent further change.
- Element mismatch: one or more taxels in an array respond differently from nearby elements under comparable contact.
These distinctions follow the troubleshooting descriptions in Bota Systems’ sensor manual and SCHUNK’s FTD commissioning instructions. Check the manual for your own device’s indicators and allowable range; those descriptions are not universal fault codes.
Check range and operating conditions first
Confirm that the applied force, signal, and supply conditions are within the model’s stated operating limits. If an out-of-range or saturation indication appears, stop applying force and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions. SCHUNK notes that a persistent error after force application is paused can indicate overload or a disconnected supply; do not assume every saturated reading has the same cause.

Allow the sensor and surrounding system to stabilize after temperature changes when its manual calls for it. Rapid temperature shifts can move readings, and capacitive-touch systems can also respond to temperature and humidity because their controller tracks capacitance against a reference. Do not change thresholds or recalibrate merely to hide an unstable environment.
Inspect electrical noise, connections, and vibration
- Check that the supply is stable and that connectors are fully seated and undamaged.
- Look for cable strain, intermittent movement, or routing near sources of electrical interference.
- Verify grounding and isolation as specified by the sensor and controller manuals.
- Check whether vibration or mechanical movement coincides with the apparent signal noise.
SCHUNK identifies vibration and electrical interference as possible noise sources and recommends proper grounding and isolation. Bota Systems also points to electrical disturbance and poor grounding, while noting that component failure can be responsible. If these checks do not resolve the behavior, preserve the raw logs and consult the manufacturer rather than assuming filtering will fix a hardware fault.

Check mounting, contact, and force transmission
A sensor can produce inconsistent readings even when its electronics are working if the contact or mounting changes how force reaches the sensing area. Inspect the mounting surface for flatness and contamination; check alignment, adhesive uniformity, overlays, and whether a surrounding structure restricts movement or coupling. SCHUNK recommends operating components separately where appropriate and cleaning the sensor body and adapter plate.
For FSRs, Sensitronics identifies irregular mounting surfaces, edge point-loading, and nonuniform actuation as causes of unreliable readings. An overlay and its mounting affect force transmission, so a calibration or test performed on a bare film may not represent the installed assembly. Tactile-array behavior can also change with mounted geometry: a peer-reviewed 2015 study found that calibration on a flat fixture may not match performance on a curved surface, and that contact compliance matters.

Apply checks specific to the sensor technology
Force-sensitive resistors and resistive tactile arrays
FSRs are proportional sensors, not precision instruments. Sensitronics gives ±2–5% as typical FSR repeatability guidance on its application-notes page, accessed in 2026; this is not a guaranteed specification for every FSR or installed system. Resistive arrays can also show nonlinear response, drift, hysteresis, taxel-to-taxel variation, or crosstalk. In passive resistive matrices, ghost readings may arise from the scanning/readout arrangement; Sensitronics discusses scanning approaches and software correction as possible mitigations.
Capacitive touch sensors
Capacitive controllers detect a change relative to a reference, so environmental shifts can affect the baseline. Threshold, hysteresis, and drift handling are controller-level settings; consult the controller’s documentation rather than applying FSR force-calibration practices to a touch button. Microchip cautions that an occasional negative noise spike alone should not trigger recalibration.

Force/torque transducers and other equipment
Follow the exact model’s commissioning, overload, and service instructions. SCHUNK’s FTD instructions, for example, prohibit opening or disassembling the product and call for authorized repair or calibration. That restriction applies to the specified equipment, not automatically to every tactile sensor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calibrate only after basic faults are ruled out
For quantitative FSR force measurement, calibrate the complete installed assembly at several known loads across the intended range. Keep the actual mounting, overlay, contact geometry, and actuation method in place: Sensitronics’ guidance is to “Calibrate at the system level, not the bare sensor level.” Select known masses that suit the sensor’s range and contact setup; a weight set alone is not a fixture, traceability guarantee, or universal troubleshooting fix.

Do not transfer one manufacturer’s recalibration or repair procedure to another sensor. Some devices require authorized service, and the model manual governs whether user calibration is allowed and how it is performed. If an application needs substantially tighter accuracy than an FSR can provide, Sensitronics uses ±0.1% as an example requirement for considering a strain gauge or load cell instead; it is an example, not a universal comparison specification.
Filter or tune detection after diagnosis
Filtering can reduce harmless fluctuation, but it cannot correct overload, poor grounding, bad mounting, or a failing component. For FSR human-interface applications, Sensitronics suggests a single-pole RC filter cutoff of 10–50 Hz for many touch applications; it says fast impacts may require 100–500 Hz. These are application suggestions from its notes accessed in 2026, not universal settings for tactile sensors. Software moving-average, exponential-smoothing, or median filters may be easier to tune. For capacitive touch, adjust controller thresholds and hysteresis according to the controller documentation.
Choose filtering against the response the application needs: stronger smoothing suppresses short fluctuations but can also delay or soften detection of real contact changes. Keep the unfiltered data available during diagnosis so a filter does not conceal spikes, drift, or saturation.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek model-specific help
If readings remain unstable after range, environment, electrical, and mechanical checks—or the sensor shows persistent overload, a damaged cable, or suspected component failure—stop using it outside its stated limits and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Exact wiring, recalibration commands, maintenance limits, and compatible parts depend on the sensor model and readout system; the sensor type alone is not enough to establish them.
