When the Home app shows “No Response”, first determine whether the problem affects one manufacturer’s accessories or devices from several manufacturers. Then check whether the accessory works in its own app, confirm Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi conditions, restart devices in the order Apple recommends, and only then consider removing and resetting the accessory. If you are trying to pair a new device, use Apple’s separate “Unable to add to home” checks instead of treating it like a previously working accessory.

Record the exact alert, the accessory type (Wi‑Fi, Thread, or bridge-connected), whether you are home or away, and whether every affected product comes from the same maker. Those details determine which troubleshooting branch is appropriate and help support staff avoid repeating steps that could erase your setup.

Start by identifying the failure

HomeKit troubleshooting depends on where and when the failure occurs. Write down the exact message shown in Home, such as “No Response”, “Unable to add to home” or “Home Hub Required.” Also note whether the accessory is Wi‑Fi, Thread or connected through a manufacturer’s bridge. A device that worked yesterday and a device that has never paired are different problems, even if both appear as connection errors.

What you observe Best starting path
Only one manufacturer’s accessories show “No Response” Check that manufacturer’s app, firmware, bridge and accessories first.
Accessories from several manufacturers show “No Response” Check the iPhone, iPad or Mac, shared Wi‑Fi, router, hubs and network software.
An accessory worked before but now is unavailable Use the response troubleshooting sequence; do not begin with a factory reset.
A new accessory cannot be paired Verify Apple Home/HomeKit/Matter compatibility and follow the “Unable to add to home” sequence.
Local control works but remote control does not Check the home hub and remote-access setup. A hub is required for remote control.
Home cannot remove an accessory Use the manufacturer’s app if it provides a removal option, then follow the maker’s reset procedure.

This pattern does not prove the root cause. It simply selects the safest diagnostic branch and prevents you from resetting every accessory when the fault is actually in a shared network or hub. Test from the same room and Wi‑Fi conditions each time so you can tell whether a change made a difference.

Before changing anything, test the manufacturer’s app

Open the app supplied by the accessory maker and try the same control there. This single check separates an accessory-level problem from a Home app or HomeKit path problem. If the maker’s app has a device-status or firmware page, note what it reports before making changes.

  • It also fails in the manufacturer’s app: the accessory, its power, firmware, bridge or the maker’s service needs attention. A reset may eventually be necessary, but use the maker’s reset and re-add instructions.
  • It works in the manufacturer’s app: leave the accessory paired for now. Check Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, firmware, bridges, hubs and the Home app path before removing it.

Working in the maker’s app does not prove that Apple Home is configured correctly, and failure in the maker’s app does not prove that Home is at fault. It is a diagnostic split, not a final diagnosis.

After every troubleshooting step, open Home and test the affected accessory. Stop as soon as it responds; unnecessary resets erase configuration and automations. If several people use the home, ask another resident to test as well, but keep the controlling device on the same Wi‑Fi network while you compare results.

One manufacturer’s accessories show “No Response”

Use this sequence when the failure is limited to one brand or one maker’s bridge. Perform the steps in order and check Home after each one. If only a single accessory is affected, begin with that accessory rather than restarting the entire network.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth. On the iPhone, iPad or Mac used for Home control, open the device’s Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth. Bluetooth is also commonly required during nearby setup, so leave it enabled while diagnosing a pairing or response issue.
  2. Restart the affected accessories. Disconnect mains-powered devices and reconnect them. For a battery-powered accessory, remove and replace the batteries if that is the maker’s recommended restart method. Do not interrupt a device that is actively installing firmware.
  3. Check firmware in the manufacturer’s app. Install any available accessory or bridge update. If the accessory is also unavailable in that app, follow the maker’s reset guidance rather than improvising a reset sequence. An update can correct Home support, but it cannot make an inherently incompatible product compatible.
  4. Restart the bridge and home hubs. Unplug each third-party bridge and every home hub, wait briefly, reconnect them, and allow them to finish starting before testing Home again. A bridge-based accessory may appear unavailable even when the individual accessory has power because the bridge is the shared path to Home.
  5. Apply the Thread-specific recovery only when appropriate. For a third-party Thread accessory, disconnect its power for five minutes, reconnect it, then wait ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize. These timings are not a general fix for Wi‑Fi or non-Thread products. Test only after the full stabilization period.
  6. Remove and re-add only as a later step. If the device remains unresponsive, remove it from Home. If Home does not offer removal, use the manufacturer’s app. Reset the accessory using the maker’s documented procedure, then add it again. Be prepared to recreate room placement, scenes or automations.
  7. Escalate to the manufacturer. Contact the maker if its accessory still fails after its documented reset and re-add process. Include the model, firmware version, connection type and exact Home status.

Several manufacturers’ accessories show “No Response”

When unrelated makers fail at the same time, investigate shared equipment and software. The pattern points toward a common dependency, but it does not by itself prove that the router is at fault. A phone update, hub state, Wi‑Fi change, VPN or security filter can affect multiple brands without any accessory being defective.

  1. Update the controlling device. Install available software updates on the iPhone, iPad or Mac, then close and reopen the Home app.
  2. Use the same Wi‑Fi network. Connect the controlling device to the home Wi‑Fi used by the accessories. Remote control has an additional requirement: Apple states, “To control your accessories remotely, you must set up a home hub.” Being able to browse the internet on the phone is not proof that it can reach local accessories.
  3. Enable Bluetooth and restart accessories. Turn on Bluetooth, restart affected accessories, and check each manufacturer’s app for firmware updates and basic control.
  4. Allow Thread time to recover. For third-party Thread accessories only, remove power for five minutes, reconnect, and wait ten minutes before testing.
  5. Restart the shared infrastructure. Restart the modem and router, third-party bridges, all home hubs, affected accessories and the iPhone, iPad or Mac. Bring devices back online before moving to the next test. If the router has separate network names, verify that the controlling device is on the intended home network rather than a guest network.
  6. Check network-intercepting software. Temporarily review VPN and third-party security software for settings that could interfere with local-network connectivity. Re-enable protections after testing and change only settings you understand. Do not leave a security control disabled as a permanent workaround.
  7. Contact Apple Support. If several manufacturers’ accessories remain unavailable after this sequence, Apple is the appropriate next support path. Tell support whether the maker apps work, whether the issue is local or remote, and which hubs and network devices were restarted.

When the accessory works locally but remote control fails

A home hub has a specific job: it provides remote control when you are away from the home network. It is not presented as a universal cure for every local “No Response” condition. If accessories respond while your phone is on home Wi‑Fi but not when you are away, verify that a supported home hub is set up, powered and connected.

If setup displays “Home Hub Required,” follow the hub setup requirements shown by Apple and the accessory maker. Buying a hub is relevant when you need remote control or the setup flow requires one; it is not a reason to purchase hardware solely to cure a local response failure. Apple’s current Matter guidance is version-dependent: the setup page says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a hub, while also recommending a hub for the best experience. Check Apple’s current requirements for your software version before relying on hub-free operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the distinction clear: local control tests the phone’s connection to the home network and accessory path, while remote control depends on the home hub and its connection. A hub can therefore be healthy even when one local accessory has lost power, and a local network can be healthy even when remote access is unavailable.

How to fix an accessory that cannot be added

Pairing a new accessory is a different problem from reconnecting one that previously worked. Start with compatibility and setup conditions before attempting a reset. An accessory can have internet access through its own app and still lack Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter support.

Confirm compatibility and preparation

  • Verify that the product supports Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter. A product that works in its own app is not automatically compatible with Home.
  • Update the iPhone or iPad used for setup.
  • Turn on Bluetooth.
  • Read the accessory manual for required hardware, firmware updates or a manufacturer-app setup step.
  • Connect the iPhone or iPad and the accessory’s relevant network equipment to the same Wi‑Fi network.
  • Check whether the product requires a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network. Some accessories do not support 5.0 GHz.

“Unable to add to home”

  1. Make sure the accessory is powered on and in its pairing state.
  2. Move it closer to the router during setup. This is a setup test; once pairing succeeds, place the accessory according to the maker’s range guidance.
  3. Restart any third-party bridge and all home hubs.
  4. Reset the accessory only if its instructions require it, then repeat the maker’s pairing procedure. A reset may remove an existing pairing, so do not perform it casually on a device that already works elsewhere.

Incompatible-network alert

Connect the iPhone or iPad to a Wi‑Fi network that supports 2.4 GHz when the accessory requires it. A 5.0 GHz-only connection can prevent setup even when the phone has internet access. Check the router’s network names and band settings rather than assuming that a dual-band router exposes both bands to every device.

Unsupported-accessory alert

Check the manufacturer’s firmware and compatibility information. Firmware can add or correct Home support, but do not assume an update will make an inherently incompatible product work. If the maker lists extra hardware or a bridge, complete that requirement before retrying the Home code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matter-specific setup

Matter accessories have their own hub and software requirements. Apple’s setup guidance recommends a home hub for the best Matter experience and describes circumstances in which iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without one. Because this behavior depends on current software and accessory support, verify the requirements shown by Apple and the maker for your exact version. If the setup screen says a hub is required, treat that message as a requirement for that setup path rather than as evidence that every HomeKit device needs a hub.

Restarting the right equipment without losing configuration

A restart is reversible; removal and reset are not. Use this order when the issue appears to involve multiple devices:

  1. Close and reopen Home.
  2. Restart the iPhone, iPad or Mac used for control.
  3. Restart affected accessories.
  4. Restart third-party bridges.
  5. Restart home hubs.
  6. Restart the modem and router.
  7. Wait for Wi‑Fi, bridges and hubs to finish reconnecting, then test Home.

Bring one layer back online before testing the next. This makes it easier to identify whether the phone, accessory, bridge, hub or router changed the result. Do not repeatedly power-cycle a battery device in a way the manufacturer does not support, and do not interrupt a firmware update.

When to remove and reset an accessory

Removal belongs near the end of the one-manufacturer troubleshooting path because it can delete Home assignments, room placement, scenes or automations associated with the accessory. Before proceeding, record any settings you will need to recreate and confirm that the maker’s app also has a documented re-add process.

  • Use the manufacturer’s documented factory-reset method; button timing differs by product.
  • If Home cannot remove the accessory, remove it through the manufacturer’s app when that option is provided.
  • After reset, update firmware in the maker’s app if required.
  • Add the accessory again using the maker’s exact instructions, including any bridge or 2.4 GHz requirement.
  • If pairing still fails, stop repeating resets and contact the manufacturer with the model, firmware version and exact error text.

A practical decision tree

Question If yes If no
Does the accessory work in its manufacturer’s app? Check Home, Bluetooth, firmware, bridge and hub paths. Follow the maker’s power, firmware and reset guidance.
Do several manufacturers fail? Check the controlling device, shared Wi‑Fi, router, hubs and VPN/security software. Stay in the one-manufacturer branch.
Is this a new pairing? Verify compatibility, Bluetooth, same Wi‑Fi, 2.4 GHz needs and setup hardware. Use the response branch for a previously paired device.
Is the failure only remote? Check home-hub setup and status. Continue local accessory and network checks.
Is the product Thread-based? Use the five-minute power removal and ten-minute stabilization wait. Use the normal restart path; do not apply Thread timing.

What not to assume

  • A home hub is not a general fix for every local “No Response” message.
  • One failed accessory does not establish that the router is broken.
  • Working in a manufacturer’s app does not guarantee that Home is configured correctly.
  • The five-minute power removal and ten-minute wait apply to third-party Thread recovery, not every smart-home product.
  • A factory reset is not the first step and may erase configuration.
  • Internet access on the phone does not prove that local-network, Bluetooth or Matter requirements are satisfied.
  • A 5.0 GHz connection is not automatically suitable for an accessory that requires 2.4 GHz.
  • Remote failure and local failure are not interchangeable symptoms; remote control adds a home-hub dependency.

When support is the right next step

Contact the accessory manufacturer when its product also fails in its own app, when its reset and re-add procedure does not work, or when firmware and compatibility remain unclear. Contact Apple Support when accessories from several manufacturers remain unresponsive after device, Wi‑Fi, hub, router and VPN/security checks. Provide the exact status text, accessory model, connection type, software versions, whether the maker’s app works, and which steps already succeeded; this avoids repeating resets unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does HomeKit say “No Response” when the accessory works in its own app?

That result points you toward the Home app, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, firmware, bridge or home-hub path rather than immediately resetting the accessory. Leave it paired, check those dependencies, and test Home after each step.

Do I need a HomePod or another home hub to fix “No Response”?

Not necessarily. Apple identifies a home hub as required for remote control and recommends one for the best Matter experience, but it is not a universal cure for a local “No Response” problem. Set one up when you need remote access or the setup screen requires it.

How long should I wait after restarting a Thread accessory?

For a third-party Thread accessory, disconnect power for five minutes, reconnect it, and wait ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize. Do not apply that timing to ordinary Wi‑Fi or non-Thread products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I add an accessory on my Wi‑Fi network?

Confirm Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter compatibility, update the iPhone or iPad, enable Bluetooth, follow any maker-app setup step, and check the required Wi‑Fi band. Some accessories require 2.4 GHz and do not support 5.0 GHz.

Should I factory-reset a HomeKit accessory that stopped responding?

No, not as the first step. Test the maker’s app, check firmware, restart the accessory and shared equipment, and use the Thread recovery timing when applicable. Remove and reset only later, using the manufacturer’s documented procedure.

Who should I contact if troubleshooting fails?

Contact the manufacturer when its app also fails, its reset and re-add procedure does not work, or compatibility and firmware are unclear. Contact Apple Support when accessories from several manufacturers remain unresponsive after the shared device, network, hub and security checks.

The Bottom Line

Use the failure pattern to choose the branch: one manufacturer means start with its app, firmware, bridge and accessories; several manufacturers means inspect the controlling device, shared Wi‑Fi, router, hubs and network software. Keep Bluetooth enabled, use the Thread-specific five-minute and ten-minute recovery only when appropriate, and treat removal or factory reset as late steps. A home hub is for remote control and recommended Matter operation, not a blanket cure for every local “No Response.”
