To improve home Wi-Fi, first check what your device is connecting to, then test placement, frequency band and channel conditions before buying equipment. Your router and device negotiate the Wi-Fi connection automatically; you generally cannot select a protocol such as 802.11a, b, g or n directly. The connection they settle on depends on what both support and the radio conditions where you are using it.

1. Check which Wi-Fi connection your device is using

A router that supports several Wi-Fi standards does not mean every connected device uses the same one. The access point and client negotiate a compatible connection, and signal conditions can influence the result.

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:

netsh wlan show interfaces

Look for the connected interface’s radio type in the output. This can help establish what the computer is using, but it does not by itself identify the cause of slow or unreliable Wi-Fi.

2. Test the router and device positions

Wi-Fi travels by radio, so distance, walls and other obstructions, nearby electronics, large metal objects, and interference from other networks can affect performance. Start by testing the connection in the location where it causes trouble.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Move the router or access point toward a more central, open position if practical.
  • Temporarily move the affected device, if possible, to see whether its location is the main factor.
  • Try more than one router position. A geometric center is not automatically the best spot if walls, metal, or electronics interfere.

Change one thing at a time and retest in the problem area. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

3. Try the available frequency bands and check channel use

If your router exposes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, test both where the connection is weak. In general, 5 GHz can be faster but is more sensitive to distance and obstructions. Which band works better depends on the router, client, and location.

A Wi-Fi analyzer can show nearby visible networks, relative signal levels, and channel use. If you consider changing a channel, first confirm that your router and wireless adapter allow it; the available controls vary by equipment. Retest after a change rather than assuming one channel is best everywhere in the house.

4. Extend coverage if placement and band tests are not enough

If the weak area remains, choose an expansion method based on whether you can run Ethernet to a better access-point location. These options are not interchangeable: their wiring needs and reliance on wireless conditions differ.

Option Connection to the router Useful trade-off
Wired access point Ethernet Generally the strongest choice for extending coverage when a cable can reach the desired location.
Wireless repeater or range extender Wireless Avoids running a new cable, but depends on the quality of the wireless connection between the router and repeater.
Mesh system Multiple nodes extend coverage Another approach to whole-home coverage; check the specific system’s connection and compatibility details.

There is no universal house-size threshold or guaranteed coverage radius for these choices. The best fit depends on where coverage is poor, the layout, and whether Ethernet can reach the location that needs service.

5. Consider device-specific fixes—or use Ethernet

Check compatibility before replacing an antenna

A replacement antenna is an option only if your access point supports one, and the antenna must be designed for that specific equipment. Do not assume an antenna can be attached to every router or will solve interference caused by walls or placement.

Use a USB Wi-Fi adapter when it fits the device

A USB Wi-Fi adapter, including a model with an external antenna, may help a computer whose built-in wireless connection is inadequate. Check that the device supports the adapter and that it suits the computer’s connection needs.

Choose Ethernet for a stationary device when practical

If a stationary computer or other device supports Ethernet and you can route a cable to it, a wired connection is usually more reliable and faster than Wi-Fi. It also avoids relying on the wireless signal in that particular room.

A sensible troubleshooting order

  1. Check the connected radio type on Windows with netsh wlan show interfaces.
  2. Test router and device placement in the problem location, accounting for obstructions and nearby sources of interference.
  3. Compare the available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, then inspect channel use if your equipment permits it.
  4. If coverage is still poor, decide whether Ethernet can reach a wired access point; otherwise consider a repeater or mesh system after checking compatibility and specifications.
  5. For a single supported stationary device, consider Ethernet; for wireless-only use, check whether a compatible antenna or USB adapter is appropriate.
